Teams of teachers and support staff have spent a great deal of time and effort analyzing and triangulating individual student data to determine an impactful course of action to help students grow in both reading and mathe- matics. While we started this school year with a variety of intervention groups already up and running, several students were added to groups and new groups were created to provide further support for both math and reading dur- ing grade level intervention times. I applaud our staff for their continued dedi- cation to doing the difficult work of data analysis to help our students academi- cally, and I look forward to watching students make progress as a result of these plans for instruction. Students will receive a letter home in their back- packs if they are currently slated to partake in a pull out intervention with a literacy or math support teacher. Students will also be receiving interventions delivered by their classroom teachers throughout the year as well during this intervention time. Please contact your child’s teacher if you have any ques- tions. Next Friday, October 10 th , students in 2 nd through 5 th grades will be sent home with MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) reports and students in 4 th and 5 th grade will also receive ISAT (Illinois Standards Achievement Test) reports. Please take time to review these reports to look at current student progress. When looking at MAP data, it is important to look at progress over time. Each individual data point measures one moment in time, but our goal is to see growth over time for each student. In terms of ISAT data, please note that the cut scores to qualify for each category (exceeds, meets, below, and warning) were significantly changed two years ago. The change made it more difficult to reach the meets and exceeds categories. Prior to the change in cut scores, Fairview would typically have about 90-95% of students meeting or exceeding standards. For the last two years this number has dropped to around 80% meeting or exceeding standards. This same trend has been noted in sur- rounding school districts as well. Last year was the final year for the ISAT. The PARCC test will be implemented this year and in the years to come in- stead of the ISAT. Teachers and staff are happy to help you understand the data more fully, so please notify us if you have questions. Next week, we will be having our annual “safety week” at Fairview. All stu- dents will be practicing one safety drill each day throughout the week. This includes two evacuation drills, a shelter-in-place drill, a hard lock down drill, and bus evacuation drills. Please take a moment to talk with your child about the importance of practicing these drills. It might even be a good time to re- view your plans at home regarding what you would do in the event of an emer- gency. I will not surprise students with emergency drills next week and plan to make an announcement before each drill explaining what the drill is called and why we take the time to practice. We thank the Mount Prospect Police and Fire Departments for their assistance with these drills. One further note about next week: Friday, October 10 th is a half-day of student attendance. Dismissal will be at 11:50 a.m. for all students. There will be no Kids Corner after school on October 10 th . Please plan accordingly! HALLOWEEN COSTUMES We would like to remind par-ents that look-alike guns, knives, and other violent ob-jects which may be included with a Halloween costume are not permitted in the school building. If your child’s cos-tume includes items of this nature, please leave them at home for trick-or-treat activi-ties or other family excursions. We must provide the children a consistent message regarding objects which are considered dangerous and it is confusing to allow these items in school for any reason. Students’ cos-tumes should always be age appropriate.

October is National Breast

Cancer Awareness Month

Be in the know...District shares information from local organizations District 57 families are fortunate to live in a community that offers so many opportunities for children! Please see the flyer in this week's packet that provides links to information about upcoming registration deadlines and events. The District admini-stration office is pleased to share this information from local organizations.

FROM THE NURSE….

If your child has had a fever or

been vomiting they need to re-

main home until they are fever

free and/or not vomited for 24

hours.

If your child requires medication to be

given when he/she returns to school, you

must provide the following:

1. An order from the doctor,

2. Parent’s signature on medication form

(obtain from the school nurse), and

3. Medication in original container.

All medication, including cough drops,

needs to be kept in the Nurse’s office.

With this warm weather children are out-

side having fun, which I highly encourage.

There are many more injuries with flip

flops, sandals, and slip-on type shoes at

recess. Please consider leaving the flip

flops for the pool and wearing tennis shoes

to school.

tures will be Tuesday, October 14. Bright, color-

ful clothing looks best. See the attachment for more information.

The school yearbook will be offered for sale in March.

Picture retake/absentee day is sched-uled for Tuesday, November 11 .

Orange Ruler We are off to a great start! Keep registering your child/children online at http://www.orangeruler.com/ go to Login and New User Sign-Up.

The Orange Ruler is helping the PTA raise money, just like the Entertainment Books and Product Sales helped us in the past. The Orange Ruler is implementing health, well-ness, and positive reinforce-ment to the students during this two week time frame. We are not just helping the

PTA we are also taking on a charity, www.charitywater.org. This shows the stu-dents they can help others too! Please check your child's backpack for more information about this fundraiser.

Helpful Reminders for Drop-Off and Pick-Up in the North Parking Lot

1. Please pull forward as much as possible. The goal is to have 3 vehicles at a time drop-off or pick-up. 2. Please have children exit the vehicle only in the designated area and on the passenger side. 3. Please have your children ready to exit when you pull up. If you are in the midst of a conversation please park in the lot and finish, and then walk your child or pull around to the back of the line. 4. Please be patient and plan your time accordingly. Students enter the build-ing at the 8:45 a.m. bell and classes begin at the 8:50 a.m. bell. 5. Please be aware that there are many vehicles behind you and everyone is in a hurry. Your consideration is appreciated. 6. Please refrain from using your cell phone in the parking lot or around the building. Remember that Illinois State Law prohibits cell phone use in school zones and this includes the parking lot when picking up and dropping off. 7. Thank you for your help in making this a very safe and efficient area for your children.

Award Book Programs

Author Visit We are looking forward to having Candace Fleming visit on January 13th.

This is the first month of our Book It! reading incentive program. You are invited to read, fill in the reading log, and earn a free personal pan pizza coupon from Pizza Hut if you reach or exceed our October reading goal of 360 minutes. Your name will also go up on your grade’s Book It! poster in the LRC when you turn in your first completed reading log. Read all six months and you may win a special prize (see below.) Q - Who can participate in the Book It! reading program? A – All of the students at Fairview School are invited to participate. Q – How do I participate? A – Each day you read at home, fill in this reading log by recording the minutes you spend reading. Count up the total number of minutes you read during the month, fill in your first and last name, have an adult sign to verify the log and bring it to the LRC. Q – Do I have to wait to the end of the month to turn in my log? A – No, you can turn in your log as soon as you reach or exceed the monthly goal. Be sure you have met or exceeded the goal before you turn in

your log. Your log must be turned in by Friday, November 7. Q – Do I have to read and fill in minutes every day? A – No, you do not have to read every day. You will be able to exceed this month’s goal by reading 20 minutes a day five times each week. If you read more than 20 minutes a day, you may read way beyond our goal! Q – Some days my teacher gives me a homework assignment to read 15 or more minutes at night. Can I count that reading time when I fill in the Book It! reading log? A – Yes, you can count that time if you are reading outside of school hours. Any reading done at home counts. Q – I like to read comic books and graphic novels, or nonfiction books. Can I count the time I read them, too? A – Yes, you can count the time you read books, magazines, newspapers, or comic books. Any kind of reading counts. Q – Is there a special reward for reaching the reading goal for all six months? A – Yes, students who reach the goal and submit their logs for all six months (October – March) will be entered into a Fairview School Book It! readers’ drawing for a special prize. The grand prize is a Barnes and Noble gift certificate. Do you have other questions about Book It? Contact Mrs. Potratz in the LRC or at [email protected].
