Message from the Council Chairman

It is with great pride and pleasure

that I congratulate the Class of 2007.

Pride because you chose to complete you

degree here at The College, soon to be

"University of The Bahamas". Pleasure,

because through your persistence and

achievement, you have convincingly

demonstrated that we Bahamians have

the intelligence, the will and the support

of the Almighty to achieve our just goals.

I congratulate you for having made

the sacrifices, which have yielded the fruit Commencement celebrates today.

Equally, I congratulate your families and friends who shared your sacrifices and

supported you generously through it all.

Today your formal education at The College comes to an end. Tomorrow you

will be called upon by the wider community to live the promise that The College

saw and nurtured in you . You have set the pace for those who will step, with high

hopes and grand dreams, through the doors of the University of The Bahamas

in the coming years. As COB alumn i, you will be called upon to exemplify the

special educational experience that The College has afforded you to reach this

newest rung on the ladder of success. Your COB experience will help to identify

and support you as leaders of the future. Your COB education, used wisely, has

given you much to support you as citizens of merit and quality, of whom our

Bahamas will be the beneficiary.

I challenge you to maintain that promise as you enter into a larger and

more demanding world . I encourage you to set ever higher goals that reflect

the highest values of godliness and good citizenship . Know that you, the 2007

graduates of The College of The Bahamas, will be the major architects of the

future for us all. You will be the entrepreneurs, the workforce, the people of

ideas and inventions who will construct the foundation of a productive society

to nurture future generations of Bahamians and, perhaps, others beyond our

shores.

With your new status as graduates of The College of The Bahamas, you

will be presented with many paths to explore . Whatever the directions you

choose, keep in mind the need to be of real service to this community, which

has nurtured you . You have ample evidence that your community and world

have need of your selfless service more than ever before . Together, we must

afford every single member of our society the chance to be most fully alive, to

make the most of their own lives. This is our sacred trust. It is now for you, the

Graduates of 2007, to move into the future with excitement, a sense of hope, and

a degree of anticipation that better things are yet to come, for you, your families,

your friends and our beloved country. May God 's peace be with you as you begin

your journey into the future .

Message from the President

Dear Graduates, Today is your day. Enjoy every moment. Today is the day that we celebrate you and your successes. There have

undoubtedly been times along your journey when your spirit and confidence faltered, times when you were not sure you would make it to the end of this journey and times when you felt what was being asked of you was too much. We know also that, for many of you who have studied on a part-time basis, it has been a long road requiring extraordinary discipline and commitment. Whether you came to us directly from high school or whether you came back a few years later, whether you studied on a full-time basis or on a part-time basis, all of you have conquered the challenges in your lives and met the requirements of the degree we will be conferring upon you today. We are enormously proud of you and offer you our very warmest wishes of continued challenges and successes throughout life.

We hope that over the years you have spent with us, you have had the opportunity to grow in knowledge, skill and wisdom . We know you have been taught by excellent faculty and we hope you will come back frequently to let your favourite professors know what is happening in your life . We hope you have made strong friends who will stand by you throughout your life and we hope you take with you the values, skills and knowledge that will allow you to live a deep and fulfill ing life and contribute to the health and prosperity of your family, community and country.

As we celebrate you today, we give thanks for your families and your friends who have been your source of support and who are here to rejoice with you today. We thank also those whose generosity facilitated your journey. We are very pleased to welcome all of these today.

While some of you may be leaving us today, today is also the day when we welcome you into your new family - that of College alumni . We invite you to stay connected.

May your journey be joyful.

Message from the Executive Vice President, Academic Affairs

For 30 years, The College has graduated hundreds of students each year. Yet each graduation is unique in its own way. This group of graduates will have the distinction of being one of the last classes to graduate before The College transitions to the University of The Bahamas. I offer heartiest congratulations to you on the successful completion of your various degrees and programmes. You have worked hard and have surmounted all obstacles in order to achieve your goals. We thank you for choosing The College and giving us the opportunity to play an integral role in your professional development.

Your theme "The wait is over: Walk into your season " is very interesting and appropriate. For some of you, the wait has been long, eight or ten years. For others it has been rather short, four or five years. Whatever the t ime period, I trust that your accomplishment has made the wait worthwhile . You can now walk into your season, a new phase in life and write the chapters as you see fit - taking on a new job, continuing an old one with renewed vigour or pursuing advanced studies, etc. Whatever you do, strive to abide by principles of The College 's motto, "Knowledge, Truth, Integrity".

As you walk into your season, I also implore you to be ambassadors for The College and to make tangible contributions to the ongoing development of your alma mater, the future University of The Bahamas.

I wish you success in all of your future pursuits.

Warmest congratulations Rhonda Chi pman-Johnson, PhD

The College of The Bahamas ... 13

ABOUT THE COLLEGE OF THE BAHAMAS Established in 1974, The College of The Bahamas was founded to be a source of academic and intellectual leadership in The Commonwealth of The Bahamas and to educate and train Bahamians for the purposes of self- fulfillment, productive work and nation building .

For the first twenty years of its existence, The College offered two-year associate degrees in addition to a number of undergraduate diplomas and certificates. Many of our graduates of the two-year programmes immediately or eventually went on to attend some of the very best universities in the Caribbean, the United States, Canada and the Un ited Kingdom and have enjoyed great success.

In 1991, The College began to offer a number of baccalaureate programmes, starting with the Bachelor of Business Administration. Throughout the years, the qualifications of faculty also increased and more and more of faculty began to have terminal degrees, usually doctorates. This was in large part due to enlightened policies supporting the professional development of fa culty. We also built a strong support staff team in areas ranging from security services to information technology. Through the years, The College has had the benefit of thoughtful lea dership in both the administration and on Council.

We also began to build our Alumni programmes whose flagship activity is, of course, our Hall of Fame induction. We have now iinducted Bishop Neil C Ellis in 2001 , financial expert La rry Gi bson in 2002, pharmacist Laura PrattCharlton in 2003, attorney-at-law Tanya McCartney in 2004, Vern ice Walkine, Director General of Tou r ism in 2005, and Police Superintendent Keith Bell in 2006. Fu rther, a full18% of the curre nt elected Members of Parl iament are alumni of The Co llege.

THE COLLEGE OF THE BAHAMAS TODAY Today, The College operates from three campuses: Oakes Field and Grosvenor Close in New Providence and Northern Bahamas Campus in Freeport, Grand Bahama and College Cent res run by resident coord inators in several other islands, including Abaca, Exuma and Andros. Two research centres, Bahamas Environmental Resea rch Centre and Gerace Research Centre, are located in Andros and San Salvador, respectively.

Instructional programmes are administered through : Three 131 faculties: Liberal and Fine Arts, Pure and Applied Sciences, Social and Educational Studies. Six 161 schools : Communication and Creative Arts, English Stud ies, Education, Nursing & Allied Health Professions, Sciences & Technology, Social Sciences, Business and the Culinary & Hospitality Management Institute const itute the remaining academic units. COB launched its Marine and Environmental Studies Institute in 2005 and In ternational Languages & Cultures Institute and has foreshadowed the launch of additional institutes. Through its outreach programmes, the Centre for Continuing Education and Extension Services ICEESI offers co urses in personal and pro fessional development and academic upgrading. COB operates on a semester system, August to December and Ja nuary to April, with two summer sessions, May to June and June to July. Tui tion is $100 per credit hour for Bahamians for courses at the 100 and 200 level and $150 per credit hour for courses at th e 300 and 400 level. Fees for non-Bahamians are double. Today, we offer on a free-stand ing basis, six 161 baccalaureate degrees wi th fifty-n ine !59] majors and three 131 associate degrees We also offer th e UWilaw programme, which we expect to make our own by 2009, as well as 4 graduate degrees in collaboration with universit ies such as Kent State. The Colleg e"s enrolment in January 2007 was 5,409, 622 of wh ich were at the Northern Bahamas Campus.

TOWARDS UNIVERSITY STATUS The College of The Bahamas Act, created in 1974, was revised in 1995. This revision allowed The College greater financ ial autonomy, opened up its organisational structure , gave the institution authority to grant degrees and empowered it to seek and receive private funding.

In any given semester, the proportion of students enrolled part - time hovers around 40%.

14 ... 30th Commencement Exercises

As of January 2007, th ere we re 224 regular full- time faculty. In add ition, The College utilizes about 70 part-time faculty. Around 24% of these faculty hold doctoral degrees or other termi na l degrees in their field. As of January 2007, The College em ployed 373 staff in support and administrative roles. The operating budget of The College for the year 2006-2007 is $41,396,400. Between 2005 and 2007, The College invested $12,395,541 in infrastructure improvement. We have signed agreements to collaborate with two universities in the past year. one with The University of Rhode Island in which two Bahamian students from The College participated and one with The University of Johannesburg where we hope to start exchanges in Fall 2008. We also have a new exchange programme with Monroe College in NYC in the area of tourism and hospitality. We are building The University of The Bahamas block by block.

THE ROLE OF THE COLLEGE- SOON TO BE UNIVERSITY OF THE BAHAMAS- IN NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT The role of The University of The Bahamas is to support and drive national development through education, research and in novat ion . National development is taken in its largest sense as economic, socia l and cultural development. The University of the Bahamas must build on the successes of The College to offer high quality programmes and to develop high standards of qua l ity assurance. It must also develop new programmes and, in so doing, make sure that it takes into account needs across the archipelago.

ACADEMIC SYMBOLISM

THE COLLEGE MACE The Academic Ceremonia l Mace represents the author ity of the Chief Exec utive Offi cer of The Col lege. The Mace of The College of The Bahamas measures just over three feet in length and is made from an indigenous Bahamian wood. It is topped by a sphere flanked by three blue marlins, a noted game fish of Bahamian waters. The College Crest is carved on the sphere and is framed by the marlins. The Mace was designed by Joann Behagg, Assistant Professor in Art in the School of Commun icat ion and Creative Arts. The carving and production were carried out by the Hopedale Centre, New Providence.

ACADEMIC DRESS The wearing of caps, gowns and hoods at college and university functions dates back to the earliest days of the oldest universities. Modern academic regalia evolved from the kinds of apparel worn by monks and students in the eleventh and twelfth centuries to keep wa rm in medieval castles and ha lls in which they studied.

THE GOWN· The gown has become sym bolic of the democracy of scholarshi p, for it completely covers any dress or rank or socia l stand ing. The sleeves of the gown ind icate the level of the degree held by the wearer. A long, pointed sleeve ind icates the bachelor degree. The master"s gown has an oblong sleeve cut in an arc with a sl it at eith er the upper arm or wr ist. Th e Doctor"s gown has bell-shaped sleeves and may also have velvet fa ci ng and three sleeve ba rs or chevrons. The sleeves of a college/un iversi ty presidenfs gown bear fou r chevrons. The tr imming may be black or it may match the degree colour on the gown"s edg ing.

THE CAP The academic cap is a sign of the freedom of scholarship and responsibility and dign ity with whi ch scholarship endows the wearer. Old poetry records the cap of scholarship as square, symbolizing the book, although other authorities claim tha t it is a mortarboard, the symbol of the masons, a privileged guild . Council members wear a six-sided cap, wh ile the Presidenfs is eight-s ided. The colour of the tassel on the cap denotes the discipline. The tassels on the mortarboards worn by the faculty may be black or a colour indicating the degree. Those who hold a doctoral degree may wear a gold tassel.

Tassel colours worn by graduates can include:

Accounting -Drab Agriculture- Maize Architecture - Blue Violet Arts- White Business Studies- Drab Economics - Copper Education- Light Blue Engineering- Orange Finance - Drab General Studies -White Geography- White History- White Journalism - Crimson Language & Literature -White Law/Criminal Justice- Purple Library Science - Lemon Marketing - Drab Mathematics - Gold Nursing- Apricot Psychology - Gold Public Administration - Peacock Sciences- Gold Secretarial Studies - Drab Social Studies- Citron Sociology - Citron Technology- Gold

THE HOOD The hood is the most prominent feature of the academic costume and is lined with the official colours of the institution conferring the degree. It is edged and bound with velvet or the colour appropriate to the degree. At The College of The Bahamas, the lining of the hood is orange and yellow representing The College 's colours.

THE CORD The gold cord is worn by candidates graduating with distinction. The cumulative grade point average required for the award of distinction is 3.51 - 4.00, effective Fall 1998. ·

ACADEMIC HONOURS Three levels of pass are awarded in each programme:
