THANK YOU MADIBA

“While I watched fl ags being lowered and people crying, the thankfulness in my heart was incomparable to any other moment in my life.Madiba did not give black South Africans their country back, he gave South Africans their South Africa back. My South Africa is not one of hatred and segregation. My South Africa is one of unity. My South Africa is not one where human dignity is overlooked. My South Africa is a place of love, compassion and humility. My South Africa is the place that Madiba dreamed of. My South Africa is the place that Madiba fought for. I am so thankful that I have been given the opportunity to live in a country where compassion, love and unity are celebrated, not without problems but despite problems. I am so very thankful that my memory of South Africa is one of a rainbow nation founded on the forgiveness of a man who today we can all look up to, remember and love. I am so very thankful that my memory of South Africa is one where colour is celebrated and not condemned. My South Africa is the heart of a dream that Madiba gave his life for.”

Year-end party honours domestic workersGUGU ZWANE [email protected]

DOMESTIC workers were honoured at the Domestic Police Forum held at the Bordeaux Scout Hall.

The forum consists of domestic workers from Bordeaux South and Willow Wild/Hurlingham Five.

Leigh Driemel, who heads the Bordeaux South section of the forum said, “These women are the eyes and ears of the community and they work with the Randburg police and security companies to report and stop crime in the area.”

Throughout the year the women have received fi rst aid training, fi re prevention awareness, and they have learnt how to handle a crime-related incident. They work closely with the Randburg police as well

as the security companies operating in the area.

The women were awarded certifi cates and gifts for their hard work and commitment to curbing crime.

The Randburg police and security companies operating in the area were also acknowledged for their assistance and support of the forum.

“The Bryanston KFC, Pick n Pay, as well as Fruit and Veg City were kind enough to sponsor us with lunch for our year-end party,” said Pauline Dickson, who heads the Willow Wild/Hurlingham Five section of the forum.

Both Driemel and Dickson organised the celebration and handed out gifts to the special guests. “Everybody has worked well together as a team – let us continue to do so next year,” said Dickson.

COMPLAINTS have been made about trees being chopped down to build new developments in the business precinct of Sandton.

Sandton resident Greg Davies was concerned about the actions of developers and construction companies chopping the trees down.

He claimed there was a collection of trees on the pavement on Fifth Street, between Alice Lane and Fredman Drive, that had disappeared from the area due to construction sites being erected.

“It took 20 years for the trees to grow like that, it is not like we can just plant more,” said Davies.

According to Davies, the trees were cut down on public property, and he wanted the people responsible to plant more trees.

Trees were also removed on an island on Rivonia Road in Illovo, between Melville Road and Eton Road, to make space for a new Bakos Brothers store.

However, co-founder of Bakos Brothers, Dennis Bakos, said the trees were cut down according to the council’s regulations.

“There was nothing done illegally; we plan to replant the trees on the island in early January after approval from the city council and City Parks,” said Bakos.

When approached about the issue, Jenny Moodley, spokesperson of City Parks, said street trees are managed through the City

of Johannesburg’s street tree bylaws.Moodley added that all businesses and

residents must subscribe to this set of laws which reinforces that “no individual or entity, besides Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo, has the authority to lop, prune, maintain, fell or plant trees on public sidewalks without the written authority from the entity”.

Commemoration trees with heritage value are of a rare species, or are over 60 years old, and are protected by various environmental acts governed by the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Conservation and policed by the Green Scorpions.

Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo reports transgressions to the unit, who have access to geographical information systems that can determine the age, height, species and location of all trees and are well-positioned to issue fi nes to non-complying organisations and individuals.

Transgressors may be fi ned for illegal felling and the cost-recovery of planting trees of equivalent value.

“Trees are critical to combat environmental degradation and landowners are urged to absorb existing trees into their renovation plans as a tree has the potential to signifi cantly increase property values,”added Moodley.

Illegal street tree felling or pruning in the City of Johannesburg should be reported to the Park Rangers.

MOTORISTS travelling on Jan Smuts Avenue near Bompas Road, Dunkeld were brought to a halt when a pipe along the road burst during morning peak hour on December 4.

Thousands of litres of water shot metres into the air from the pipe burst earlier that morning, forcing some motorists to fi nd alternate routes. One of the lanes had been closed due to road construction.

The same pipe burst on 30 November, but according to Joburg Water spokesperson, Millicent Kabwe, it was a different

section of the pipe that burst.Kabwe said, “We are still

investigating the cause of the burst, and the pipe is being repaired. We are not going to have road closures while we are repairing the pipe.”

She encouraged the public to report burst pipes to the relevant authority when they see them.

“We only became aware of this burst pipe on the radio this morning, but there were motorists driving past it,” she explained.

In May this year it was announced the City of Johannesburg lost 39 percent of Gauteng’s water in the 2011/2012 fi nancial year.

Team work gets bollardsGUGU [email protected]

BOLLARDS have been erected around George Lea South Park.

Ward 90 councillor Gordon Mackay said residents of the area were responsible for the development.

“I was initially alone in the fi ght to get bollards around this park and as soon as the residents joined me, action was taken. I hope residents know the power that they possess.

Without the support of the residents this would have not happened,” he said.

Mackay primarily wanted the bollards around the park to stop cars from driving through and endangering the safety of visitors. “The bollards will now also stop illegal dumpers from easily accessing the park,” he added.

Mackay said City Parks was a major contributor to the development.

“City Parks answered the

residents’ call and came on board to fi nd the money for the bollards,” he said.

City Parks spokesperson Jenny Moodley added that Eskom was funding the contractor for the bollards as well as the removal of the rubbish at the park.

“The bollards will act as a deterrent for illegal dumping. We hope that this initiative will contribute towards stopping the illegal dumping that occurs at the park,” added Moodley.

School principal exoneratedTAMARA [email protected],za

THE Gauteng Education MEC Ms Barbara Creecy has upheld the appeal of the principal of Rivonia Primary School and has set aside all charges against her.

The charges were brought against the principal in an admissions-related matter which went through the courts and was eventually heard in the Constitutional Court. The Constitutional Court ruled in favour of the department, affi rming the role of the head of department in school admissions.

The MEC has done this in the interest of rebuilding the relationship with the school.

“We have applied our minds to the Constitutional Court decision and have decided

not to pursue the disciplinary process. We believe that a good relationship with the school is in the best interest of the children,” MEC Creecy said.

In making this decision the MEC paid particular attention to the statement of the Constitutional Court, in paragraph 79 of its judgement, where it held as follows:

“An application for the review of the disciplinary proceedings instituted by the department against the principal is not before us.

On this issue it is worth reiterating that, in the light of this judgement, there is an expectation that all relevant parties will take heed of this Court’s approach to school-based disputes and will resolve them in as co-operative a manner as possible.”

FOLLOWING the article Terrifying incident, week ending 29 November, Clara Nthodi has come forward with a similar account.

She said the incident occurred in the same way as Esther Kekana’s had in Hyde Park. She was on her way to work on Fifth Street in Sandton, when a man approached her to show her that she had a black stain on her.

“Just as we were trying to fi gure out where it came from, a white Polo stopped next to us and the people inside said they were the police,” explained Nthodi.

Like Kekana, Nthodi was also pushed into the car by the man she was standing with who also got inside after her.

“The men inside the car said they saw the person who put the black stain on me and they drove to him and told him to get into the car,” said Nthodi.

She said the man took out a container with a black

substance and said he uses it as muti to steal people’s money.

“The other man who pushed me into the car then said he had R5 000 with him and it disappeared after the man applied the muti on him,” said Nthodi.

They kept asking Nthodi if she had money on her or a bank card and said they could take her to the bank to check if her money was still there.

She said the men drove her back to where they picked her up and told her to get out. “I was very traumatised by the whole thing. I even needed counselling afterwards. I want people in Sandton to know that this is not only happening in Hyde Park but also in Sandton,” she said.

Captain Kym Cloete, spokesperson for the Sandton police said no incidents have been reported at the police station. “[However] we are aware of such a crime trend and we urge the community to remain alert this festive season,” she said.

Tax breaks for energy effi cient businessesSIMONE SAMUELS [email protected]

TAX incentives are being introduced for businesses that make measurable energy saving improvements, the Department of Energy said.

Companies are required to register with the South African National Energy Development Institute (Sanedi), which will measure and verify their energy saving to establish if they qualify for the incentives, Department of Energy director-general, Nelisiwe Magubane said.

Magubane announced the Regulations on the Allowance for Energy Saving in terms of the amended section 12L of the Income Tax Act, 1962, which came into operation in November.

“This legislation makes provision for the minister of fi nance, in consultation with the ministers of energy and trade and industry, to develop and publish energy effi ciency regulations,” Magubane said.

Chief Director at National Treasury, Cecil Marden said the incentive works on the basis of measurable energy saved, expressed per kilowatt hour.

According to Marden, businesses will receive a 45c tax deduction on their taxable income per kilowatt hour of energy saved.

“... We’re not just saying [to companies] reduce your energy use by simply switching off machines. We are saying run your machines in an energy-saving way,” said Magubane.

The Department of Energy, National Treasury, Sanedi and the South African Revenue Service will host workshops from January to March 2014 to help businesses familiarise themselves with the registration process and the implementation of the regulations.

The Private Sector Energy Effi ciency Project, a collaboration between the Department of Energy and the National Business Initiative, was launched recently, and according to Magubane formed a strong basis for the implementation of the regulations.

The project aims to assist about 60 large companies, 1 000 medium-sized companies, and 2 500 small businesses to become more energy effi cient.

The project is funded by the United Kingdom’s Foreign International Development Department.

Magubane said government had recently reviewed the National Energy Effi ciency Strategy to submit to cabinet.

According to Magubane, the strategy sets a national target of energy intensity reduction of 12 percent by 2015.

IN A BID to curb the spread of HIV, the government is calling on men to undergo medical circumcision.

The government aims to medically circumcise one million men in the next year through its Medical Male Circumcision campaign, Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe said.

Speaking on World Aids Day, Motlanthe said that medical male circumcision had proven effective in the fi ght against HIV – which is said to reduce the risk of infection by 60 percent.

According to Motlanthe, once 80 percent of men had been medically circumcised, 500 000 new HIV infections and 100 000 deaths over the next decade would be prevented.

As part of the government’s HIV prevention campaign, it also re-launched the HIV counselling and testing programme. Since the programme was initially launched in 2010, 20 million South Africans had been tested for HIV and know their status.

Motlanthe noted that in 2012, President

Jacob Zuma announced that all HIV positive pregnant women and all HIV and TB co-infected patients would begin ARV treatment at a CD4 count of 350 and less.

In addition, all infants who were HIV positive would started ARV treatment.

As a result, more than 200 000 new patients had begun ARV treatment since April 2012.

According to Motlanthe, the campaigns had also yielded a signifi cant reduction in the rate of HIV transmission from mother to child.

He added that between April and September, 20 000 pregnant women began ARV treatment – 5 000 more than the number of pregnant women during the same period in 2012.

According to Statistics SA’s 2013 statistical release, South Africa has the highest number of people living with HIV and AIDS, estimated to be about 5.4 million.

South Africa also has one of the largest HIV and Aids treatment programmes with 2.4 million people on treatment, according to the presidency.

PRESIDENT Jacob Zuma should be prosecuted for the multimillion rand development on his private residence, activist Zackie Achmat said.

This follows the leaking of two provisional reports compiled by the public protector, which revealed that Zuma personally benefi ted from the security upgrades at his Nkandla home.

According to Public Protector Thulisile Madonsela’s report, the president should account for violating the executive ethics code for failing to protect state resources and misleading parliament.

Achmat has signed an online petition calling for the impeachment of the president and the “prosecution of everyone else involved in criminal action in the Nkandla corruption scandal”. According to the petition, Madonsela’s report on Nkandla “proves that President Zuma lied to parliament and personally benefi ted from over R200 million of public money.”

The group, calling themselves the Committee for the Impeachment of the President, called for a public demonstration outside parliament if the prosecuting authorities and parliament fail to take action against Zuma.

Achmat took to Twitter saying, “Impeach the gangster of #Nkandla – 12 100 people have signed petition & support mass protest on #13February.”

E-toll exemptions for taxisSIMONE [email protected]

ONLY public transport operators who have valid permits and operating licences will be exempt from paying e-tolls.

“Those who qualify for this exemption are public transport operators in possession of valid permits and operating licences and whose vehicles are registered on the eNatis system,” spokeswoman Octavia Mamabolo said in a statement.

According to the Department of Transport, 45 700 public transport operators have been exempt from e-toll charges.

However, delays in the issuing of taxi operator licences has left many Gauteng taxi drivers at a disadvantage.

Philip Taaibosch, South African National Taxi Association Council secretary-general said that taxi operators had to register with the South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) to qualify for the exemption and required an operating licence to prove that they were legal taxi operators.

Taaibosch said thousands of Gauteng’s taxi drivers had not received their licences.

SOUTH Africa has lost a friend, a father and a hero.

The country, and the world, will forever remember Nelson Mandela − our great ‘Tata’, the man who managed to bring South Africans together. A man who put his country before his own life, a man who inspired and loved, a man who saw a country on its knees, and created a nation we can all be proud of.

When news of Mandela’s death broke, people from around the world went into mourning. Petrol attendants, journalists, builders, school children and

business people found themselves united in their tears. South Africa has lost a gem, but Mandela’s legacy will never be forgotten.

Mandela had the ability to change the way South Africans of all races, genders and ages thought. Because of him, we are a united, forgiving and loving nation.

Watching the news and reading the articles that have surfaced as a result of Madiba’s death, one cannot help but feel patriotic. Mandela is South Africa’s hero and no one can take that away from us. He will

remain a man who, even in his death, makes people want to strive for greatness.

Mandela said in his autobiography, A Long Walk to Freedom, “A leader... is like a shepherd. He stays behind the fl ock, letting the most nimble go out ahead, whereupon the others follow, not realising that all along they are being directed from behind.” This is what our Tata did for us. He has led and guided us − even after he stepped down as President of South Africa and retired from public life; and he continues to do so, even in death.

THE Sewing Sisters held their year-end party at the Wendywood Clinic.

Premi Roopan and Nthabiseng Tom have found a way to empower women through sewing. They teach a group of 30 women how to sew at a small centre based at the clinic. The centre has been in operation for fi ve years. Attendance certifi cates were handed out on the day of the year-end party and the women modelled the outfi ts that they had made.

“Some of these women are

from impoverished backgrounds in Alexandra, some are patients at the clinic, many of them don’t work and others are pensioners,” said Roopan.

“We have given them a place to acquire a new skill and many of them use it to generate money for themselves and their families.”

She added that the centre had produced a number of qualifi ed women who now teach others to sew and they make money from it.

The Gambling Board has also assisted the centre by donating sewing machines for the students. “Because of the Gambling Board, many of our students have done very well,” she said.

“We need all the help that we can get to keep this centre going.”

Hilda Mvulane of the Health Information System Innovation Campaign said, “Nothing like this has been initiated at any other clinic,” she said.

“It’s a fi rst of its kind and the City of Johannesburg intends to enter this initiative into a competition that acknowledges entrepreneurs because this truly is an act of entrepreneurship at its best.”

She congratulated Roopan and Tom for their efforts and a lunch followed to end off the celebration.

CHILDREN from around Johannesburg came together in celebration of Nelson Mandela.

Children of all ages fl ocked to Nelson Mandela Square to pay tribute to a man who had a particularly soft for the younger generation.

They laid fl owers, poems, letters and fl ags at the foot of the statue and in a designated area of the square.

One little girl, Grace Petersen thanked Madiba for ensuring that her and her mommy and sister could be a family.

Zuma gives tribute speech at Bryanston TAMARA [email protected]

PRESIDENT Jacob Zuma attended a service on 8 December at the Bryanston Methodist Church to mark the National Day of Prayer and Refl ection called to remember former President Nelson Mandela.

President Zuma arrived at the church with Mandela’s grandson Mandla Mandela and was joined by Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, who was escorted by Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyana. Oprah Winfrey’s partner Stedman Graham arrived at the church to show support for Mandela’s family, as did Dali and Rachel Tambo.

Joined by the Archbishop of the Methodist Church Ziphozihle Siwa, the Bryanston congregation attended the service and rejoiced in prayer, celebrating Madiba’s contribution to the liberation of South Africa and the establishment of a democratic society.

Babies were baptised and Christmas poems were recited at the beginning of the service, which was then followed by an honourary tribute speech on Mandela’s long life by

President Zuma.“We should, while

mourning, also sing at the top of our voices, dance and do whatever we want to do, to celebrate the life of this outstanding revolutionary who kept the spirit of freedom alive and led us to a new society. As South Africans, we sing when we are happy and we also sing when we are sad to make ourselves feel better. Let us celebrate Madiba in this way, which we know best. Let us sing for Madiba,” said President Zuma.

Archbishop Siwa reminded the congregation about coming together through the spirit of selfl essness, and spoke of justice, love and the end of violence for the nation.

He highlighted Madiba’s years of suffering, and explained how it shaped his character, even though it was unwanted.

“As he closes his eyes, we open ours and go forward,” said Siwa.

“Mandela has fi nished the race. His day for departure had come.

“This is the beginning of the end. We must be prepared to run the race for ourselves and this nation, as there is a fi nishing line for all of us.”

Song and dance... TV personality Bassie Kumalo celebrates Madiba’s life with vigour.

Welcome... Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, escorted by Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyana, is welcomed to the prayer service by the Bryanston Methodist Church.

SAN Salvador Home has expressed their gratitude to the community who support their home and workshop.

According to Margy Langschmidt, the home has survived with the help of a few generous and caring sponsors from corporate companies and friends, as “government subsidies and disability grants are negligible and there is always a shortfall each and every month”.

Currently, the home has 60 intellectually disabled persons who reside at San Salvador and 50 disabled men and women who come to the home daily to work at Sally’s Workshop.

With 19 non-paying residents from previously disadvantaged backgrounds and other persons who have outlived their families, they cannot afford to pay for their fees.

After their morning chapel sessions, the residents are broken up into groups and interact while weaving, knitting and bead making. Creating role models out of learnership benefi ciariesCHRONICLE [email protected]

THE FedGroup Iteke learnership programme wants to create role models out of benefi ciaries.

Following the success of Brinny Mphogo, the fi rst graduate of FedGroup’s Benefi ciary Care Education Trust Programme, FedGroup has launched an adjacent Learnership Programme, Iteke − Sepedi for challenging yourself. The programme will look to challenge benefi ciaries to shape a future for themselves, and in doing so build them up as role models. Mphogo will head up the programme as a mentor to the benefi ciaries. He hopes to inspire the selected benefi ciaries and mentor them in the same way he was mentored.

He said, “In 2005, FedGroup invested in me, my education and my future. I would like to extend this investment to benefi ciaries. Iteke is not a programme for benefi ciaries who are looking to entertain a gap year, but for those looking to build a strong foundation for future success.

“Through Iteke, we are giving our benefi ciaries access to the tools that they require for optimal development. We are presenting

them with an opportunity to unlock their full potential. They will graduate from Iteke with a sense of independence and an understanding of interpersonal and corporate communication.”

Selected benefi ciaries will be chosen in November and the programme will start in January next year. Over the course of that year, the selected benefi ciaries will rotate through FedGroup’s various departments, gaining important skills and hands-on experience. Benefi ciaries will be remunerated and taught how to save and invest their money.

Bra Hugh takes to stage for Legacy LiveTAMARA [email protected]

LEGENDARY jazz musician Hugh Masekela and American jazz pianist Larry Willis performed at the second Legacy Live at Room Five in Rivonia.

Legacy Live is an intimate music encounter sponsored by Glenlivet, where like-minded individuals come together and enjoy an interactive and personal music experience with an artist.

Having celebrated the musical journeys of South African music greats such as Judith Sephuma and Selaelo Selota in the past to acclaimed success, the next instalment of Legacy Live allowed guests to be serenaded by Masekela, Africa’s ‘father of jazz’.

Masekela shared the stage with lifelong friend and equally celebrated musician Willis, and shared anecdotes of his experiences with music greats such as Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Paul Simon and Billie Holiday.

“A legend is described as having single-minded determination and an irrepressible spirit. Both artists have been nominated for and won a variety of awards, and even with more than 70 years of age behind both of them, their signature sounds are still traversing the globe, leaving a legacy behind for generations to come,” said Glenlivet brand manager Mandla Holomisa.

“Hugh Masekela and Larry Willis embody everything we celebrate,” he added.

TURNER Classic Movies screened the original fi lm version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for free at Nu Metro cinemas on 8 December nationwide.

Their extensive library of movies range from the ‘20s to the 21st century, presenting them in a contemporary style that reinterprets their place in history and their relevance to people’s lives today.

To introduce the fi lm, Nu Metro Hyde Park invited the media and DSTv subscribers to enjoy a Willy-Wonka-themed gathering

and encouraged children to watch the original movie, and enjoy various activities on arrival.

Guests had the pleasure of indulging in chocolate fountains and sweet treats, choose golden eggs and eat Wonka Bars.

The fi lm tells the much-loved story of Charlie Bucket whose parents saved up to buy him his favourite chocolate, a Wonka Bar. By a stroke of luck he fi nds one containing a golden ticket granting him access to Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory, with four other children from around the world.

However, Mr Wonka only approved of children with the highest behavioural qualities and Charlie’s modest upbringing ends up serving him well.

Tal Hewitt, vice president and general manager of Turner Broadcasting Systems for Turkey, the Middle East and Africa said, “The Chocolate Factory is a wonderful fi lm full of hilarity, colour and joy.

“Turner Classic Movies is proud to offer a rare opportunity for this generation of children to see it on the big screen this holiday season.”

Miss South Africa gets a make-overTAMARA [email protected]

THE 33 Miss South Africa semi-fi nalists and panel of judges for the new 2014 Miss South Africa competition were revealed by Sun International at The Maslow Hotel.

Radio and television personality Anele Mdoda returns for a second time as a judge and will be joined by international DJ and recording artist Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumelo, better known as Black Coffee, and magazine editor and style icon Pnina Fenster.

They will be judging contestants on intelligence, leadership, talent, physical fi tness and a dedication to community service.

The 12 fi nalists will be revealed on 2 February on Mzansi Magic as part of the Miss South Africa reality show which debuts on the channel on 26 January.

Fenster was delighted in her new role and said it was an honour to be involved in an event that had such a long and illustrious history.

“The Miss South Africa pageant has inspired and delighted South Africans for decades and it continues to do so,” said Fenster.

“It is glamorous and stylish, it involves meaningful charity work and it’s fun. What is not to love about that?”

Suzette van der Merwe of Cell C and the 1990 Miss South Africa explained why the company decided to come on board as a headline sponsor.

“Sun International has repositioned the brand to make it more relevant in today’s society and aligns with their strategy to empower women,” said Van der Merwe.

“Like Sun International and the Miss South Africa brand, Cell C’s goal is to support bold, confi dent and beautiful young women who have the power to inspire a nation and make a difference.”

Alison McKie of Sun International said their aim was to take the pageant to new heights and believed they were on their way to achieving this.

“We are delighted that Cell C is sponsoring the competition as we all have the same vision when it comes to helping young women fulfi l their dreams,” she said. “We also believe that our judges will bring something new to the competition, thanks to their wide-ranging experience and expertise.”

The fi nals will be held at Sun City on 30 March next year.

FOOD and Trees for Africa celebrated 23 years of greening the poorest areas of South Africa this year.

The organisation has planted more than 4.2 million trees and has developed thousands of permaculture food gardens, bamboo plantations and assisted organic farmers. Lindsey Tainton of the non-profi t organisation said they received applications from communities across the country requesting trees, food gardens, bamboo or farming help. She said 50 percent of the country's population lacked access to suffi cient food and 40 percent of school-going children in Africa were chronically malnourished.

With support from many conscious

individuals and companies, the organisation responds to as many applications as possible.

For the upcoming holiday season, they hope to provide 1 000 more trees and 10 more food gardens to needy communities.

They have asked the community to support the growth of Africa's environment by purchasing a tree. "Plant a tree in honour, gratitude, celebration, or in memory of a loved one, friend, relative, client or business associate, and give a growing gift to someone less fortunate in a barren and dusty settlement," said Tainton.

The organisation aims to plant about 50 000 trees, 60 new school food gardens and develop four new organic farms next year.

VILLAGE Safe Haven in Buccleuch has experienced good fortune in the past year.

According to committee member Wendy Ruiter, there have been many highlights that have stood out for the orphanage, and the haven wanted to share their gratitude with the different organisations, individuals, families and volunteers who have supported the orphanage.

One of this year's highlights was the opening of the pre-school and learning centre, where each space was equipped with learning materials and tools with the help of donors in the area.

Ruiter shared how being part of a child’s safety during a time of distress is so positive and explained that a three-year-old boy was reunited with his family after spending time at Village Safe

Haven while his parents sorted out their issues.

Their oldest resident, who arrived at the haven when he was seven years old, is now 16 and has just received his fi rst ID book and opened his own bank account.

The haven's donated greenhouse also produced an abundant amount of spinach, which is being bartered for bread at the closest grocery store.

For the festive season, Village Safe Haven has asked the community to sponsor their wish list with events, meals, movies and outings for the children over the December holidays.

Village Safe Haven also appreciates stationery and contributions toward school clothes, as well as groceries, non-perishable food items and a small bar fridge for the pre-school.

Father Christmas joins swimmersTAMARA [email protected]

THE Brescia House School grades 2 and 3 Christmas gala arrived with ominous clouds in the sky and the threat of rain hung in the air.

But, according to marketing spokesperson

of Brescia House School Helga Bishop, the girls’ excitement and enthusiasm banished any dark cloud and the gala went ahead “without any glitches”.

Bishop said all the girls took part and swam in a variety of races to show off their swimming skills.

The fi nal relays truly showed the

Christmas spirit with decorative ribbons and reindeer red noses being passed from one team member to another.

And to end the day off, Father Christmas made an appearance in his raft, together with his Grade 6 reindeer to deliver sweets to all the deserving girls.

Joburg Zoo is lit up by Sacred HeartSIPHO [email protected]

THE school year has come to an end and Sacred Heart College pupils celebrated the start of the festive season at the Johannesburg Zoo, participating in the merriment of the Tree of Light, which was hosted by HospiceWits and the Star Seaside Fund.

The Seaside Fund takes children from disadvantaged backgrounds on a nine-day seaside holiday.

Families attended with picnic blankets, baskets and candles, awaiting an evening of choirs, carols and thousands of sparkling lights. The Sacred Heart College marimbas opened the evening.

Later, the Sacred Heart College Primary School Choir, led by Grade 11 pianist Francis Ovenden, sang with the acclaimed Welsh Male Choir. After the singing, the Christmas tree was lit in memory of loved ones battling cancer. Each globe carried a message of love, hope and good wishes.

It was an unforgettable event that raised a substantial amount of money for individuals diagnosed with terminal illnesses, who are cared for by HospiceWits, as well as the children who benefi t from the Seaside Fund.

Meet the man behind Sleeping Beauty on IceVARUSHKA [email protected]

SLEEPING Beauty on Ice has just opened at the Teatro at Montecasino and the man behind the magic, Tony Mercer has perfected the production.

Mercer is the artistic director of the Imperial Ice Stars, and has a background in theatre production as well as having been a lighting specialist and tour manager for recording artists.

However Mercer always had a great love for fi gure skating, and while watching a fi gure skating show in 1989 he hit on the idea of theatre on ice.

“The show I was watching had incredibly talented dancers but the peformance lost its magic for me because of the freezing cold arena, uncomfortable plastic chairs and bad lighting.”

It took 14 years for Mercer’s dream to eventually be realised, but in 2003 the Imperial Ice Stars was offi cially formed.

Mercer’s greatest challenge in staging theatre on ice has been to change the audience’s mindset.

“It’s the [belief] that fi gure skating is performed on a 60m rink so it is [thought] the

skaters can’t perform elements properly on a stage because the space is too small, but you must remember that fi gure skating is done on an icerink designed for playing ice-hockey. [Figure skaters] don’t really need that much space,” he said.

Mercer explained that when he creates a production he always aims to give the audience a different perspective.

“I like to make the stories more real and human rather than fairytales. I never want to go too far because the productions are for everyone, young and old – but I don’t believe in doing something the same way just because it’s always been done that way,” he explained.

Mercer said that he especially loved South African audiences. “South Africa doesn’t have a history of ice-dancing but I think this gives the audiences an open mind. I don’t like it when people call ice-dancing ‘ballet on ice’. It is a totally separate dance form and I think South African audiences judge our performances with that in mind,” he concluded.

Cost will be changed accordingly and advertisers will be advised.12 Space is sold to the advertiser for the purpose of making announcements concerning his own business and also may not be used for attacking or making comparisons with other advertisers, firms, institutions or persons.13 Until cancelled (T.C.) orders may be discontinued on a week’s notice prior to print date by either party except in the case of guaranteed or special positions when one month’s notice is required.14 Should the advertiser not meet his frequency or volume commitment, the publisher shall be entitled to charge the top rate. This also applies when a contract is cancelled prior to completion.15 Should the advertiser exceed his monthly commitment, no reduction shall be rebated for advertising which has already appeared. However, the contract may be revised at the request of the advertiser where after the lower rate shall apply.16 On the announcement of new tariff rates, the balance of the order will be subject to the new rate.17 Any advertiser or advertising practitioner placing an advertisement in any Caxton publications indemnifies that . newspaper against any liability whether in respect of damages, cost or otherwise that it may incur as a result of the publication of that advertisement.18 All rates are nett except the rate for Auction and commission bearing advertisements. No queries will be dealt with if this reference number is not quoted.30 Credit will not be given for typographical errors which do not lessen the effectiveness of the advert.31 Response to advertising is not guaranteed.32 Please note that the practice of using the letter A to gain access to the top of a particular column is against the policy of this newspaper. Thrill-seeker’s granted superbike coloursTAMARA [email protected]

SUPERBIKE rider and ex-Atholl resident Bjorn Estment (26) has received national colours which recognise his level of achievement in adventure sports.

A South African colours blazer

was presented to him at a South African Sports and Olympic committee awards dinner.

Estment has been riding professionally since 2009, and offi cially jumped into his fi rst season last year in England.

He said superbiking was a natural step for him as his father’s

side of the family were active riders and had him pose for pictures on bikes way before he could even walk. “I am a petrol-head, and love anything that goes fast. That is why I am attracted to adventure sports,” said Estment.

He is based in Wimbledon, England during the superbike

season so he can train for the competitions he enters.

His team consists of sponsors, team mates and trainers who ensure he gets the correct training for the sport, routine services for his bike and protection against any injuries. He returns to South Africa once a year for the “local

fl avour” to check-in with his family and friends, and heads back to England to participate in the British Superbike Championships.

He thinks any thrill seeker would enjoy the sport as it focuses on natural competition and pushing one’s limit. You can follow him on Twitter @bjornestment27

Sibling Murder Forgiven“HEADING out of the gates of the prison, I’m a

Serial Bride To Sex WorkerSERIAL bride Julie, 55, kissed tens of frogs... andmarried five of them. She even wed the same manthree times. After five weddings – and five charityshop wedding dresses – Julie’s confidence was at anall-time low.
