WHAT IS 911?The entire premise behind 911 is to ensure the public has

access to the correct 911 center regardless of where you are located. The system is designed to automatically route your number to the correct 911 center based on your geographic location. This system gives you fast and easy access to a Public Safety Answering Point.

911 is a three‑digit phone number that you can use when you need the assistance of an emergency responder. Whether you need to reach emergency medical services, law enforcement, or the fire department, 9‑1‑1 is the number to know. One number is all you need to report a crime, report a fire, or save a life.

When you call 911, a Washington County 911 call taker answers the phone and determines what type of incident you are reporting, Police, Fire, or Ambulance. As they take your information, the notes are typed into the computer system and the appropriate dispatcher is made aware of the situation and the details of the call.

This process is followed for every call from a parking complaint to the smell of something burning to medical emergencies.

POLICE – WHEN TO CALL 911If you need to see a police officer to report a lost or stolen

credit card, call 911; to report a minor vehicle crash, call 911; to report a burglary of your home, call 911; if you wish to report damage to your property, call 911; to file a report just for insurance purposes, call 991; or to report an assault, call 911. Regardless of the reason, if you need to speak with a police officer, you should call 911.

FIRE – WHEN TO CALL 911Although the fire department is staffed 24/7/365, it’s

important to remember that the crews spend much of their day out in the community on emergency incidents, fire prevention activities, training, and planning for future emergencies. If you’re experiencing an issue important enough to call the fire station, please call 911.

AMBULANCE – WHEN TO CALL 911If you have a medical concern, no matter how big or small

your medical concern might be, make sure you call 911 so that the Ambulance Service can be reached wherever we are in the community. We want to come serve you, right at your doorstep, whenever you may possibly need us.

WASHINGTON COUNTY 911All Washington County 911 call takers are trained professionals

with the required training and experience to take your call, ask questions, gather specific information, and to evaluate the nature of your emergency. The call‑taker will confirm your location and telephone number right away. When you remain calm, answer all questions, and stay on the line, you will help the call‑taker better understand the situation and the help you need.

While on the phone with you, call takers enter the information you provide into the computer aided dispatch system. This system is then used to notify the proper emergency services personnel.

IF YOU NEED ASSISTANCE, CALL 911

We are all familiar with 911 from movies, television, and media. Unfortunately, we have been conditioned to believe we should only call 911 in an extreme emergency. However, that is NOT the case! You call 9‑1‑1 in many situations. From reporting a stolen credit card, minor accident, or crime in progress to a medical emergency or fire. If you need the assistance of an emergency responder, call 911.

WHEN TOWHEN TOCALLCALL911911

Peters Township Community Television produced a video on When to Call 911. We encourage everyone to watch the video. The video is available on the Township website under News or simply go to peterstownship.com/whentocall911. The video will also be shown on the public access channels, as well as posted on social media channels.

WINTER SALT USAGEAs a homeowner, keeping ice and snow off your driveway

and walkways is important for safety and convenience. When using deicing products such as rock salt (sodium chloride) or calcium chloride, please keep in mind that these compounds are extremely soluble in water and, as the snow melts, will eventually end up in our local streams. Chloride can be harmful to aquatic and plant life as concentration levels rise. There are ways to reduce the impact of salt usage by following these guidelines:

SHOVEL EARLY AND OFTENDeicers are most effective when there is only a thin layer of

snow or ice that must be removed. Shoveling or sweeping a few times during a storm may not only save your back, but, will also make a final application of deicer work more effectively.

APPLY SALT SPARINGLYThe recommended application rate for rock salt is about one

(1) handful per square yard. For calcium chloride, one (1) handful per every three (3) square yards is recommended.

CALCIUM CHLORIDE VS. ROCK SALTIf you have the choice, calcium chloride is better deicer

because it is effective to a much lower temperature than rock salt and can be spread at a much lower application rate.

SENSITIVE PLANTSIf you have any salt‑sensitive trees, shrubbery, or grass within

10 feet of your sidewalk or driveway, you should avoid both rock salt and calcium chloride or use in very small doses.

COMMON PLANTS SUSCEPTIBLE TO SALT ARE:

Deciduous Trees Tulip Poplar, Green Ash, Hickory, Red Maple, Sugar Maple

Conifers Balsam Fir, White Pine, Hemlock, Norway Spruce

Shrubs Dogwood, Redbud, Hawthorn, Rose, Spirea

Grasses Kentucky Bluegrass, Red Fescue

Snow RemovalPeters Township performs snow removal on 137 miles of

roads, 21 of those by contract with PennDOT. The township has a Council‑endorsed policy that states from the time that the Public Works Department is first notified of hazardous road conditions, all roads within its jurisdiction will be treated with salt within 3 hours. If snow plowing is required, the policy states that all roads have been plowed at least once within 6 hours. The Public Works Department’s vehicle inventory has 13 fully equipped trucks plus 3 additional vehicles equipped only with snowplows.

Snow EmergenciesWhen a significant snowfall occurs, it is sometimes necessary

for the Township to declare a snow emergency. During a snow emergency, on‑street parking is prohibited, and the police department can issue tickets or even have vehicles towed away. Citations can be issued to operators of vehicles not equipped with snow tires or chains. When a snow emergency is declared, it is broadcasted on Peters Township Comcast Cable Channels 7 and 17 and Verizon Channels 38 and 40. This information is also distributed to a number of local radio, television stations, and available on the township’s website, www.peterstownship.com, and social media pages.

fear. Let’s ditch the untrue and switch to a focus on choosing foods that work for you. Leslie J. Dec. 8: Amelia: A Life of the Aviation Legend by Donald M. Goldstein and Katherine V. DillonBestselling authors Donald Goldstein and Katherine Dillon provide new insights into a mystery that has confounded searchers for over sixty years. Much more than an investigation of Amelia Earhart’s disappearance, however, this intimate biography describes a compelling young woman who rejected society’s traditional female role to pursue an exciting, path‑breaking career and who overcame the stigma such independence brought her. Amelia Earhart inspired many to reach for the skies. Her indefatigable spirit was, and still is, an inspiration to millions.

But careless talk causes trouble, and soon Maria’s life takes a far darker turn. Disbelieved and dismissed,

Jan. 19: The Overstory by Richard PowersThe Overstory is a sweeping, impassioned work of activism and resistance that is also a stunning evocation of ‑ and paean to ‑ the natural world. From the roots to the crown and back to the seeds, Richard Powers’s twelfth novel unfolds in concentric rings of interlocking fables that range from antebellum New York to the late twentieth‑century Timber Wars of the Pacific Northwest and beyond. There is a

world alongside ours—vast, slow, interconnected, resourceful, magnificently inventive, and almost invisible to us. This is the story of a handful of people who learn how to see that world and who are drawn up into its unfolding catastrophe.

Jan 25: The Killings at Kingfisher Hill by Sophie HannahThe world’s greatest detective, Hercule Poirot—the legendary star of Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile—returns to solve a fiendish new mystery. Hercule Poirot is traveling by luxury passenger coach from London to the exclusive Kingfisher Hill estate, where Richard Devonport has summoned him to prove that his fiancée, Helen, is innocent of the murder

of his brother, Frank. But there is a strange condition attached to this request: Poirot must conceal his true reason for being there. The coach is forced to stop when a distressed woman demands to get off, insisting that if she stays in her seat, she will be murdered. Although the rest of the journey passes without anyone being harmed, Poirot’s curiosity is aroused, and his fears are later confirmed when a body is discovered with a macabre note attached. Could this new murder and the peculiar incident on the coach be clues to solving the mystery of who killed Frank Devonport? And if Helen is innocent, can Poirot find the true culprit in time to save her from the gallows?
