Connecting Global Competence

Organized and presented by:

World‘s Leading Trade Fair for Architecture, Materials and Systems

When the Long Night of Architecture was launched in 2011, I think everybody was sur-prised at the tremendous response. After all Munich isn´t exactly well known as a hot-spot for architecture. Yet, as the last three editions of the “Long Night” have shown, the City of Munich does indeed have much to offer also as regards its architecture. Beyond the old town center and the Olympic Park, there are many architectural jewels to disco-ver and delight in. And that´s precisely what the Long Night of Architecture is all about.

As Mayor of Munich, I am of course especially pleased that so many local people are showing such interest in the city´s architecture. At the last Long Night of Architecture over 30,000 people turned out to experience Munich´s most beautiful and interesting buildings lit up against the night sky. And I am confident that just as many will come along on the night of January 20, 2017. Because it is a rare opportunity to get an unusual inside perspective of our built environment and to learn about the design and functio-nality of these buildings.

Architecture is about more than the actual buildings themselves. It is also about identity and meaning, which is why it is much and often hotly debated. In the best case architec-ture gives character to a city, it expresses something about the people of that city and how they live. What would Munich be without the towers of the Frauenkirche, without the Olympic Park, without its blend of historic and modern buildings?

The Long Night of Architecture turns the spotlight – for one night – on the best of Munich´s architecture. And for that reason I am proud to again act as patron of this event. I wish the organizers every success in their efforts and I hope all the visitors will have an uplifting and enjoyable night-time encounter with Munich´s most exciting buildings!

The Long Night of Architecture is a successful project. Within only four years, it has devel-oped into a recognized brand in the events program of the City of Munich. Every two years, it is a highlight in the calendar of events.

When we started with the first Long Night in 2011, our expectations were limited. Whether it would be possible to enthuse the citizens of Munich with the subject of our trade fair BAU, well no one really knew. But when thousands of people were thronging into Munich’s most interesting buildings on a frosty night in January, it was very clear: this project has the makings of a hit!

Architects frequently regard themselves as artists. And architecture is indeed a discipline of the visual arts. But whether or not you’re an expert, you can talk passionately and argue about art, you can find it good or bad. Architecture is like art — it’s always emotional. It leaves no one cold, everyone can have a say.

We producers of fairs are proud to have succeeded in connecting BAU—the world’s most important trade fair for planners and architects — with the city. And emotionally too, not just physically. The Long Night of Architecture brings BAU straight to the hearts of the people.

I am confident that this will again be the case in 2017. The success of the Long Night is our obligation and inducement to develop the event further, without taking away from its own particular charm.

I would like to thank the persons responsible from the City of Munich and the Free State of Bavaria for their excellent cooperation and I am sure that this Long Night too will entice thousands out onto the streets.

DIETER REITERLord Mayor of the City of Munich

DESCRIPTION: A unique sports and restaurant concept opened in autumn 2016.BOX-KITCHEN is a unique combination of fitness, boxing and restaurant facilities all in one. The facilities are spread over two levels: the gym and boxing area are on the third floor, which features over 2,500 m² of training space with high-quality equipment, and a very stylish, purist interior design. On the ground floor is the culinary part of the BOX-KITCHEN concept: a restaurant, the idea being that those who train hard, need good food. In line with this philosophy, the restaurant offers healthy food.

PROGRAM: Free guided tours of the third floor. The interior designer Julia Schneider (iam) is giving a talk about the concept behind the interior design and the construction.

DESCRIPTION: The concept of the Otto-Steidle-Ateliers has succeeded in making sensible use of the mostly unexploited waste land beneath bridge structures. With no land being required, it was thus possible to create nine sponsored studios of approx. 30 m² for artists. This intrinsically obvious concept ventures into a challenging gray area beyond any regulatory processes. The “left-over area” under the bridge could be made use of. The FONDARA Group constructed the studios and operates them, thus offering affordable workplaces to up-and-coming artists.PROGRAM: Art exhibition + accompanying program of music20:00: Guided tour + conceptual idea, Prof. Dr. Rudolf Hierl, BDA, architect 21:00: Guided tour + explanation of the studio operation, Philipp Hlousek

DESCRIPTION: The ADAC´s new headquarters, in the west of Munich, was dedicated in March 2012, five years after the start of construction. This building is unique in Munich´s architectural landscape: The architects, Sauerbruch Hutton, strove not only for functionality, but also to reflect the “variety in unity” that is characteristic of this automobile club. PROGRAM: On January 20, 2017 the new ADAC headquarters on Hansastrasse will be presented in the foyer of the building, starting at 19:00. The story behind the design and construction of this architectural highlight will be outlined. DESCRIPTION: A small public square with benches mediates between the church and its surroundings, which includes a listed housing complex. The cube-shaped volume of the church is separated from the public space by a small pond in which stands a high cross. The façade, finished with light-colored render, has “light perforations” in the upper part, which in combination with the color and material concept, expresses in built form the “journey into the light”. This simple, sacred space has an inviting, pleasant air, thanks to the incident light and the light oak fittings. The church was designed as a zero-emissions building.

DESCRIPTION: The customer´s plan was to move its truck logistics operations, a space-intensive function in just-in-time deliveries, out of its main plant and use the space thus freed up for other production-related activities. The trucks now wait in an area two kilometers north of the plant. Work desks for 16 office staff are arranged within an open-plan office space. A gatekeeper controls access to the site from a separate cabin. Wet rooms are available for the use of waiting truck drivers. An axial grid of 2.50 m deliberately left scope for building in concrete or wood, or a module or hybrid cons-truction. Following a tender for the functions, the way was clear to build a combined timber-framed and timber-paneled structure.

DESCRIPTION: In October 2015, the redesigned central office of this association of the Bavarian building trade was inaugurated after three years of planning and construction. The building was originally constructed by Ackermann und Partner in the year 1976. After the alteration, the structure retained a certain independence as to its outward appearance in the surrounding area; at the same time, however, its new facade struc-ture of spatially folded precast concrete elements blends in much more strongly with its surroundings, which comprise large-scale, listed urban villas from the Wilhelminian period. The entrance storey, formerly employed as a store, was redeveloped into a spa-cious conference area.PROGRAM: Guided tours.

DESCRIPTION: The large volume of the MK5 office building blends well into its surroun-dings, its contemporary idiom making a confident statement in this area of new deve-lopment at Theresienhöhe. The overall cuboid form is accentuated by the acute-angled glass corner on the south side. The façade features solar shading in varying shades of green, which wraps around the building and adds a distinctive design note. The bathrooms and stone facade were designed and implemented directly by the firm Steininger-Steinmetz. inDESCRIPTION: The new Casa Don Bosco building is an outstanding example of contextual construction in Munich’s historic Haidhausen quarter. Inspired by the Neo-Romanesque facade of a former hospital on Auerfeldstrasse, Casa Don Bosco was built this year as a highly modern new construction. With experimental use of aerated concrete, the architects succeeded in constructing a trendsetting low-energy building that blends in harmoniously with the cityscape. On 6,500 m², it houses day nurseries, schoolrooms, apartments and a cafe. The interior design and garden landscaping are just as lively and imaginative as the outward appearance. The house is geared to the needs and preferences of the resident children and young people. The Casa contains and enlivens the formerly almost unnoticed Schwester-Eubolina-Platz; the citizens of the quarter are enthused by this sensitive approach to the area and regard the new construction as a model of careful redensification in the city center. PROGRAM: Experience Casa Don Bosco with the architects. Guided tours begin every 30 minutes; until then, you can warm up and fortify yourself in the cafe, which is opened for fans of architecture during the Long Night.

DESCRIPTION: In the basement of a building from the 1970s were a small bar and an unused garage. In an extensive process taking several months, the underground garage under the existing building was deepened by 1.5 m, thus producing a ceiling height of 4 m. A room-in-room construction was then created within the concrete structure; this ensured the necessary soundproofing. DESCRIPTION: The Dominik-Brunner-Haus of the Johanniter is a children’s center with nursery, kindergarten and three after-school groups for about 75 children. As principal, the foundation Dominik-Brunner-Stiftung financed the new building largely from dona-tions. The three levels make for intensive care that’s geared to the needs of the children. To create optimum conditions for learning, a differentiated sequence of rooms was de-veloped in close consultation with the users. A room for exercise and sports activities in the basement rounds off the range on offer. This newly occupied building is the first of two construction phases.PROGRAM: Guided tours of the building with explanations of the educational concept. Please take off your outdoor shoes.

DESCRIPTION: On 800 m2 of exhibition space in his showroom, lighting designer Ingo Maurer presents a selection of the latest design ideas from lighting projects in Germany and abroad, and gives insights into his work with light. In recent years, for example, he and his team designed lighting for the subway in Munich (at “Münchner Freiheit” sta-tion and for the mezzanine level at “Marienplatz” station) and did the exterior lighting at Esch-Belval (Luxembourg). Also in his showroom are familiar and new prototypes, individual pieces and models from his lighting collection. The showroom is in the redesi-gned premises of a former commercial laundry in the inner courtyard of a city block in Schwabing, in the north of Munich.

From 1891 onwards they served as maintenance and storage sheds for the steam engines of the Isar Valley Railway in Thalkirchen. In the space of just 18 months this entire site, with its five dilapidated but listed brick buildings, was redesigned and redeveloped, and construction work completed. Now a range of businesses is accommodated here. Glass, steel and concrete were used to upgrade the visual impression of the ensemble and energy-efficiency was improved.

What should families that build be thinking of so that they can feel good in their own new home for many years? There’s a wonderful instrument for looking into the future: megatrends. For instance, the “silver society” megatrend shows you why you should already be thinking of wheelchair accessibility when planning a home of your own. Ursula Geismann, trend analyst at the Bundesver-band Deutscher Fertigbau and the Verband der deutschen Möbelindustrie—the German associations for prefabricated construction and for the furniture industry—talks about the megatrends of globalization, connectivity, mobility, neo-ecology, health and urba-nization etc. and will be pleased to take your questions afterwards in conference room K1. DESCRIPTION: The idea was to create a building in the shape of a gold bar—quasi as an instantly recognizable business card for the company. The shape is thus self-explanatory and it lends a strong identity. The above-ground dimensions are precisely defined: 42 meters long, 23 meters wide and 8 meters high. This derives from the vo-lume of gold so far extracted around the world. The large-format, gold-colored panels on the façade were made from recycled old coins and are thus a further clever play on the main activity of pro aurum. Gold for preservation of value, concrete and basalt for solidarity and continuity.

DESCRIPTION: St. Lukas was constructed in the late 19th century as an architectural statement of Protestantism in the then predominantly Catholic city of Munich. Today the building—which houses one of the most important romantic organs in southern Germany—presents itself in an area of tension between public life and church com-munity. The tradition of the Protestant conception of space engages in dialog with the experimental and innovative ideas of a contemporary city church.

PROGRAM: An interplay of space, light and sound unfolds. The program is supplemen-ted by information on the architecture of times past and ideas for a new interior design. The respective units begin on the hour.

gDESCRIPTION: A “Meeting Box” in wood, inside an architectural practice-cum-shop overlooking the banks of the River Isar.As part of the re-organization of the staircase leading down to the lower ground floor, there was an opportunity to create a quiet, sound-insulated space for meetings and as somewhere to retreat to. Via an awning integrated into the acoustic ceiling, the Box can be entirely cut off from outside view, and the light levels reduced. PROGRAM: During the event we present an architectural location where architecture is made. Visitors to the practice-cum-shop of goldbrunner + hrycyk architekten und stadtplaner PartmbB, on the banks of the Isar, can find out about the work of these architects and town planners.

DESCRIPTION: This building is exceptional in several respects. The solid wood const-ruction is made completely of fir. Wood is employed for the supporting structures, it characterizes the atmosphere of this day nursery with its untreated, exposed wooden walls and gives the facade a warm character. Interesting too is the glue-free construc-tion method with wooden dowels, which is perceptible in the interior.

PROGRAM: See fir in a completely different way and learn more about the advantages of this type of wood. The architects show visitors through the building. Enjoy the special atmosphere of this wooden construction.
