The City’s Centennial Year of Celebration is in full swing! We began with a spectacular Holiday Firework display in December, followed by the Village Mall Carnival in January and the Taste of MB in March. But there is so much more in store for the residents of Manhattan Beach as we continue to celebrate the City’s 100th Birthday!

May 19, 2012 promises to be another outstand-ing event honoring our City’s Centennial Year as the City hosts the Centen-nial Parade! Yes, everyone loves a parade and we have a spectacular display of community spirit and pride, past, present and fu-ture for all to enjoy! There are 100 entries in the pa-rade including; Grand Mar-shall Mike Dodd, Grand Dane Jean McMillan and a line-up of floats, bands, schools, equestrians, antique cars and of course clowns to amuse and delight all who come to watch!

The parade will begin at the corner of Pacific Avenue and Manhattan Beach Boulevard at 10:00 a.m. traveling east on Manhattan Beach Boulevard, past Sepulveda Boulevard, turning left on Redondo Avenue and ending at Polliwog Park. But we’re just getting started…the parade is just a warm up to the Centennial Old Fashion Picnic at Noon. So grab your blankets, chairs, and picnic baskets and join the City for part two of Centennial Fun in the Sun!

The City has a host of activities planned for the com-munity at the Centennial Picnic! There will be old time family games, Bounce Houses for the little ones and live entertainment that will take you back to the good old days of long boards, woodies, surfers and lazy after-

noons in the sand. Food will be available for purchase for those of you who don’t want to pack up that pic-

nic basket. This great day of celebration will wrap up with birthday cake and punch, provided by the City and baked especially for the Centennial Celebration.

The Historical Society will open their doors and show-case a “Walk through Time” photo essay. And if you haven’t toured the Little Red Bungalow at Polliwog Park this is the perfect time to check out all the historical artifacts collected over the years from our beach side community.

Nature will also be celebrating the Centennial as the Botanical Garden plans to offer a tour through their gar-den, highlighting a variety of native plants. It’s a lovely place to take a stroll.

Centennial Update!

Charge Your Electric Vehicle at Home—Are you ready??Have you started seeing more electric vehicles on the road? Are you thinking about purchasing or leasing your very own EV? Driving a plug-in electric car has benefits for the environment and for our community. Cars fueled with electricity from the grid can help improve air quality and reduce harmful greenhouse gas emis-sions that contribute to climate change. Here are a few pointers from Southern California Edison to help you get ready to charge your EV at home. Please visit www.sce.com/ev for more information.

Off-Peak Charging: Charge at NightElectricity grids are designed to meet the highest, peak demand for electricity, which usually occurs during the day. At night, when off-peak demand is low, the grid is underutilized. When you charge your electric car at night, you can take advantage of off-peak excess capacity and lower rates. Edison offers customers with electric cars a choice of two electric car rate plans that encourage charging during off-peak hours (or you can choose to stay on your current Residential rate plan.)

You can call an SCE Home Fuel Advisor™ who can provide you with a customized rate analysis that es-timates your future electric car charging usage and combines it with your current home electricity usage — so you can choose the rate plan that works best for you. To speak with a Home Fuel Advisor please call 1-800-4EV-INFO.

Vitality City Principle Number 1: Move NaturallyMAKE TIME TO MOVE! | To be a well-being super-star you don’t have to run marathons or compete in ultra-endurance events. In fact, Blue Zone’s researchers discovered that many of the world’s oldest and healthiest people engage in low-intensity activity on a daily basis. Shepherds in Sardinia hike many miles every day for most of their lives, while Okinawans garden for hours every day to grow food for their tables. Adventists in Loma Linda, California—another Blue Zone—take long walks. The key is to engage in low-intensity activity most days of the week.

Move Naturally—Your Prescription to Good HealthYou don’t have to run out and buy a gym membership to be more active. Instead, build activities that you like to do into your lifestyle, whether it’s riding your bike, chasing your kids, walking the dog, swimming or anything else. Remember when you were a kid constantly on the go? You didn’t have to think about it—you just moved for the sheer fun of it! Movement was part of everyday play, whether it was climbing trees, swimming at the beach, jumping in puddles, or just plain running to feel the wind on your face. Find what you enjoy and do it!

Top 5 Ways to Get Moving without Thinking about It1. Move…For the Fun of It! Make a list of activities that you enjoy. Instead of thinking of it as exercise, focus on making your lifestyle more active. Ride your bike instead of driving. Walk to the store. At work, take the stairs rather than the elevator, park at the far end of the parking lot and go for walking breaks. Build activity into your lifestyle by doing what you enjoy.

2. Strengthen Your Social Connections. Getting active is more fun when you have company. Establish a regular time to walk with your “moai”—a group of lifelong friends—and build social connections while you take steps to improve your health.

3. Inconvenience Yourself. Small things, like getting up to change the TV channel or taking the stairs, can add up to a more active lifestyle. So hide the remote, put away the power mower and get out your walking shoes!

4. Are You Ready Feet? Start Walking. Walking is easy to do and free to anyone! All you need is a comfortable pair of shoes, and you can go almost anywhere. Walking invites company and it can relieve stress after a hard day. Plus, it’s good for your ticker, if you walk quickly enough to get your heart pumping.

5. Grow a Garden. Gardening is a great way to be physically active every day, while reducing stress. It involves a wide range of movements that may improve flexibility, strength, endurance and balance. Plus, you reap the benefits of having plenty of fresh veggies!

Plugging In: Charging Stations To fuel your car at home, you’ll need access to at least a standard 120–volt outlet in a convenient location where you can park and charge. If you want to charge you will need a dedicated 240–volt circuit and an electric car charging station. Be sure to have a qualified electrician inspect your outlet, because charging an electric car may overload an existing household circuit, particularly if it serves other house-hold needs like lights and appliances. Your qualified electrician can advise whether you need a dedicated circuit breaker or an upgrade to your circuit breaker panel.

The Installation Process

Whether or not you plan to install a charging station, a call to Edison’s Home Fuel Advisors™ is where the process begins. Edison will help you consider your rate options because your choice will affect the upgrades needed for your electrical panel and meter. Next contact your Electrical Vehicle Service Equipment (EVSE) installer or qualified electrician to inspect your home. The City requires a building permit to install a charging station in your garage and these qualified professionals can assist you.

Neighborhood WatchEvery once in a while, we are asked how our crimes are reported to the community. More specifically, we get inquiries about why some crimes never get reported to Neighborhood Watch (NW). The NW

staff dedicates much of their time reading through crime reports and gathering information that pertains to the residential areas. However,

there are some reports that contain confidential information, involve minors, or pertain to an ongoing investigation that are not shared with NW. By release

of this information, it could potentially compromise an open investigation or violate the law. Although we strive to release information on a timely basis, the integrity of cases as well as the handling and releasing of information must follow proper guidelines and the law. It is the ultimate goal of the Manhattan Beach Police Department (MBPD) to solve cases and bring to justice, those responsible.

Speaking of crime, although we saw an increase in property crimes, most were 100% preventable. It is incum-bent upon our community to protect their “personal” property. Almost every theft from a vehicle is because folks leave valuables in plain view and/or in an unlocked car. Please take time to not only lock your car, but remove your valuables or at minimum hide them from plain view of passersby. We have had countless laptop computers, cameras, cell phones, MP3 players, purses and wallets stolen because owners left them visible to passersby. Regardless of how many police officers are patrolling, if folks don’t take responsibility for securing their homes and vehicles, theft will continue. Property crimes are taken very seriously, as they are the biggest issue we face. The NW program and all of our volunteers are vital in the fight against crime and MBPD depends on you to be our “eyes and ears” in your neighborhoods. We rely on our community to call us when something sus-picious is observed. Unfortunately, many of those calls are never made because people think they may be wrong or they are “bothering the police.” If something or someone makes you think twice or feel uneasy and suspicious, call MBPD dispatch at 911 or (310) 545-4566 and let our officers respond to investigate. You may be solving a crime or preventing one from occurring. If you are not involved in Neighborhood Watch or are unsure if your block has a representative, call the office: 310-802-5183.

Lastly, mark your calendars for the annual National Night Out event on Tuesday, August 7, 2012. America’s night out against crime will once again be celebrated throughout our community. Neighborhood Watch Block Captains should register their blocks with the NW office. Anyone interested in more information or how to participate, can call Neighborhood Watch, 310-802-5183 or MBPD Crime Prevention, 310-802-5186.

Be Safe,Officer Stephanie
