Since its foundation in May 1980, the Korea Marine Equipment Association(KOMEA) has made significant contributions to the development of Koreanshipbuilding and marine equipment industries, so-called 'two sides of the samecoin.'

Korea's rise to be the world's No. 1 shipbuilding nation undoubtedly has beensupported by marine equipment enterprises, which have exerted full efforts indeveloping and supporting best-quality products and services at reasonable prices,while overcoming various difficult conditions.

There are more than 650 marine equipment manufacturers in Korea. Among them,KOMEA members number around 160. But the fact that KOMEA membercompanies account for about 80% of the total marine equipment trade volumereflects the value of KOMEA’s role.

Of particular note, KOMEA is leading the way in establishing a Global SupportCenter for Marine Equipment. This milestone KOMEA project will continue toprovide momentum to develop the marine equipment industry into a globalizedand future-oriented business, contributing to the prosperity of not only Korea butalso all partners and clients around the world.

The establishment of global after service (A/S) infrastructure for Korean marineequipment enterprises will enable them to maximize benefits from the combinationof technology, experience and know-how, energizing overseas marketing and jobcreation. Of course, the system will also provide all clients across the world withquick and quality services, vital to enhancing their competitiveness. With this andother initiatives, KOMEA remains at the forefront of international cooperation in themarine equipment field.

Korea-Japan Tie-ups in Marine Equipment

On April 10 last year, Korea and Japan held a roundtablemeeting of marine industry representatives at the LeMeridian Grand Pacific Hotel in Tokyo. A three-memberKorean delegation participated in the meeting andexchanged views of mutual interest with five counterpartofficials from Japan Marine Equipment Association (JSMEA).The participants from the Korean side - KOMEA ChairmanPark, Yoon-So, former KOMEA chairman Si, Myung-Sun andKOMEA Executive Director Kim Jung-Ho - also attended afriendly exchange meeting of marine equipment industriesbetween the two countries held on April 11.

Korea-Turkey MOU on Marine Equipment

KOMEA and GISBIR (Turkish Shipbuilders Association)signed an MOU in October 2008 in Turkey for mutualcooperation. Under the MOU, both sides expect to obtainreal momentum for expanded cooperation, leading tocommon benefit and prosperity not only for the twoorganizations but also for related industries and enterprisesof the two countries. The MOU signing ceremony tookplace amid the participation of KOMEA Chairman Park,KOMEA executives, GISBIR Chairman Bayrak and Secretary-General Demirates as well as related officials from theTurkish shipbuilding industry.

Korea-India MOU on Marine Equipment

In October 2008, KOMEA held an MOU signing ceremonywith the Shipyards Association of India (SAI) in India, aimingto expand mutual cooperation in the marine equipmentindustry for common benefit and prosperity between thetwo countries. The officials on hand at the MOU ceremonyincluded Chairman Park, Yoon-So and Managing DirectorKang, Jae-Jong from KOMEA and Chairman Nangia andSecretary-General Kuma from SAI. The main purpose of thistie-up is to share information on the Korean marineequipment industry and its products with Indian shipyardsand help them to take off toward a world-class shipbuildingpower through KOMEA-SAI cooperation.

Participation in POSIDONIA 2008

Together with major Korean shipbuilding companies as wellas KOSHIPA (Korea Shipbuilders Association), KOMEA tookpart in the 21st International Shipping Exhibition,POSIDONIA 2008, held June 2~6 at Hellenikon ExhibitionCenter in Greece, with the participation of 1,700 companiesfrom 80 countries, including Korea, Japan and China. Theexhibition contributed significantly to the promotion of theKorean marine equipment industry and to theenhancement of the global status of Korean marineequipment manufacturers. On June 5, Korea also sponsoreda reception, inviting world-renowned shipowners andrelated local VIPs.

Participation in Marine Tech Korea 2008

The International Exhibition for Korea Shipbuilding, MarineTechnology Industries (Marine Tech Korea) was held at theChangwon Exhibition Convention Center (CECO) inChangwon City November 11~14, 2008, and managed byKOMEA. The purpose of 'Marine Tech Korea' is to developmarine equipment, including the shipbuilding industry, withthe immense support of Gyeongsangnam-do provincialgovernment, Changwon City, Jinhae City, Tongyeong Cityand Geoje Island, where the main facilities of the two industriesare concentrated. Auxiliary events, including seminars,academic conferences and an overseas buyer invitationprogram, were held concurrently with the exhibition.

2008 KOMEA Forum

KOMEA hosted its second KOMEA Forum on November12, 2008, at the Changwon Exhibition Convention Center(CECO). The forum was launched under the aim todevelop marine equipment and shipbuilding industriesmore stably and actively and to provide a venue for in-depth discussions about measures to cope with pendingissues that the industries will have to resolve in the future.As it took place at the time of the global financial crisis, inparticular, the forum for 2008 drew keen interest fromshipbuilding-related experts.

Reliable Global Supply Base for Marine Equipment

Korea, on the strength of its position as the world's leading shipbuildingnation, aims to become a global supply base for marine equipment. In2015, the Korean marine equipment sales volume is expected to reachabout US$18 billion.

In a paradigm shift from the previous mid-tech and labor-intensivemodel, the Korean marine equipment industry is now focusing on thedevelopment and marketing of high-tech products and follow-upservice, developing as a next-generation growth engine.

About KOMEA


Business Mandate

1) Provide assistance to the marine equipment industry, specifically in its promotion and development

Expand the domestic marine equipment product base and improve the quality. Streamline the sub-contracting production system and strengthen cooperation between sub-contractors andcontract-order enterprises. Facilitate technical cooperation and joint venture operation. Collect information on foreign industries, conduct data research and produce relevant publications. Furnish data for industrial policy and recommend policies to the government.

2) Engage in public relations services to enhance export promotion

Assist export and import activity. Publish general catalogue & directory. Participate in international exhibitions and trade fairs. Cooperate with foreign ship equipment organizations.

3) Joint purchase and sales

Arrange joint purchase of raw materials. Facilitate funding of joint undertakings.


Marine Equipment Production Nearing 10-Billion-Won Mark

KOMEA member companies' marine equipment production reached 9.75 billion won in 2007, a 27.4% increase over theprevious year. By sector, engine & machinery recorded about 5.32 billion won in terms of production. Comparable figuresin other areas were 2.62 billion won in outfittings, 1.34 billion won in electric & electronics and 456 billion won in hulls.

The annual average production amount per company in the Korean marine equipment industry rose by 1.97 billionwon in a five-year period, from 2.88 billion won in 2002 to 4.85 billion won in 2006. Meanwhile, the average ratio ofproduction per company for the shipbuilding industry showed a slight year-on-year growth, from 12.5% in 2002 to13.3% in 2006.

Between 2002 and 2006, the annual average added value of a marine equipment company increased about 1.04billion won, from 1.59 billion to 2.62 billion won.

Marine Equipment Exports Hit US$1.24 Bil.

KOMEA member companies' marine equipment exports posted US$1.24 billion in 2008. China was the largestimporter of Korean marine equipment with US$596.5 million. Japan was second with US$163 million, followedclosely by the EU with US$141.2 million. Other countries imported a total of US$339.5 million worth of Koreanmarine equipment in the same year.

The nation's imports of marine equipment have been growing at an annual average of 13.8% in recent yearsowing to the brisk business performance of the shipbuilding industry. The ratio of exports to total sales is about12%.

In terms of exports by item and ratio, remarkable growth has been achieved centering mainly on marine enginesand related machinery since 2001, while the export ratios of other fields have shown a slight downward trend.

Production in the marine equipment industry is expected to expand steadily in the future, linked to the growthtrend of the shipbuilding industry, while both imports and exports also are likely to increase with enhancedlocalization rates.

Employment at KOMEA member companies reached 69,891 as of the end of2008.

The engine & machinery sector generated the largest number of jobs at 23,984,followed by electric & electronics at 19,339, outfitting at 18,042 and hulls at 8,526.

Technicians numbered 39,486 persons, accounting for 56.4% of the total, followedby engineers with 14,684 persons with 21.1%, office workers 13,444 persons with19.2% and others 2,277 persons with 3.3%.

The percentage of companies with 50~99 employees and that of companies with100~199 employees at the end of 2007 was 21.2% (179 firms) and 14.4% (122firms), respectively.

Meanwhile, the percentage of companies with more than 200 employees was just1.7% (14 firms). Of particular note, companies with less than 100 employees andthose with more than 100 employees accounted for 83.9% (709 firms) and 16.1%(136 firms), respectively.

Tech & Standards

Technology development is the fuel that energizes the competitiveness of the Korean marine equipment industry.Most of the key equipment and materials, such as auto pilot, radar and engine monitoring systems, are classified in thecutting-edge technology category and require highly advanced manufacturing technologies due to their characteristics-- high efficiency, reliability and special materials.

Due to production-to-order and multiple-lot, small-quantity production systems, the price of marine equipment ishigh, accounting for about 70% of total shipbuilding cost. Also, Korean marine equipment enterprises are developinghigh value-added products to meet the rigorous inspection criteria of registers of shipping as well as high qualityrequirements.

Recently, government policy associated with parts and materials-related industries has become more sophisticated.Meanwhile, externally, the demand for establishment and revision of international laws & regulations and relatedstandards is growing due to the development of next-generation products, such as equipment and materials for cruiseships and LNG carriers.

Accordingly, Korea is enhancing the level of standardization through the common use of parts and expansion ofinternational exchanges with reinforcement of the domestic marine equipment companies' standardizationcapabilities, integration of group standards, advancement of national standards, harmonization with internationalstandards, etc.

Furthermore, Korea is pursuing an ‘international standardization foundation establishment project for shipbuilding-related equipment & parts’ from 2005 until 2010 in order to take the lead in international standardization in marineequipment and to secure a competitive advantage in the market.
