Music, throughout history, has had the unique and mysterious power and ability to transcend time, space and all other types of boundaries. It can unite and change people

of all ages and cultural backgrounds whether it uses any language or none at all. Its very essence can reach in and speak directly to a person’s soul, like nothing else can

or ever could in our world, since the dawn of time and music itself.

As the world changes and the events everywhere are unfurling ever faster and becoming more demanding in our everyday lives, people everywhere are struggling daily as they confront life’s

challenges, whether naturally occurring or man-made, while still trying to move forward.

At the very heart and soul of this world, our shared world, and every one of us who lives upon it, we share the same basic hopes and dreams in life deep within us. Though our differing thoughts and ways of achieving it often give rise to great conflict, even when our words fail us and our emotions take hold

of us; this world’s music, our music, from time immemorial will continue to communicate, nurture, soothe and guide us, as it did for all those who came before us and for all those who will come after us.

Music is needed now, more than ever before. That is why the Festival of the Sound that provides these rare and unique opportunities for everyone to experience and enjoy is invaluable.

We here at the Bay Street Café are pleased to offer the Festival our continued support and encouragement as they continue to provide us all with the quality and variety of music

they have become so famously renowned for.

I am delighted to extend greetings to all those in attendance at the Festival of the Sound.

Music is a universal language that affects each of us differently. I find it tremendously satisfying to hear and see musicians of all ages discovering their passion with an intensity that is all their own. Each of them inspires me, because music has such power to delight us and also because of my respect for the great amount of work and effort needed to achieve musical excellence.

This prestigious festival represents a wonderful opportunity not only for wonderful concert experiences, but also for

growth and learning. I wish you all a most enchanting experience.

Author Berthold Auerbach wrote that “music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” I can think of no better place to refresh and renew the spirit than the Festival of the Sound. Since 1979, hundreds of musicians have participated in this celebration of classical music in Ontario. Now in its 37th season, the festival is a top destination for music lovers of both classical and contemporary art music. The Festival is to be applauded for commissioning new works, and for its musical education programs. All this creativity – and in a spectacular setting to boot!

I congratulate the Board of Directors, Artistic Director, staff, and volunteers for enriching us all through the joys

of music. I wish everyone another wonderful season at the Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts on the waterfront.

Know that your work has helped to make this Festival a popular destination for music lovers from Ontario and around the globe.

To all visitors who have come to experience this classical music Festival: welcome! Ontario is ready to offer the very

best in hospitality for all those who are visiting for the first time or making a return trip.

As musicians, performing artists and music lovers from all corners of the world gather together to share and celebrate their love of classical music and related genres, let me applaud everyone who has helped to make this event possible. Please accept my best wishes for another memorable festival and many more years of success.

It is my honour once again this year to extend congratulations to the organizers of the Festival of the Sound, which continues to welcome people to the shores of Georgian Bay each summer for an exceptional series of great performances.

As always there is great anticipation for opening weekend and the varied lineup which follows, and this year is no exception. The Stockey Centre will once again be center stage to an incredible array of talent to suit every taste.

The Festival, now in its 37th season, has grown into a Canadian and international showcase of talent, inspiring

young performers and attracting visitors from far and wide. It is a cultural institution with many loyal friends and patrons, and it reinforces why our region is such a great place to call home.

I send Artistic Director James Campbell and all those who work on the Festival a resounding ‘bravo.’ All the best for a wonderful and enriching experience this summer.

Warm regards,

Dear Friends and Fellow Music Lovers,

I am very pleased to welcome you to the 2016 edition of the Festival of the Sound.

Thank you for joining us as we celebrate its 37th year on the beautiful shores of Georgian Bay. This year is especially exciting as for the first time the Festival of the Sound has been included as one of the top 100 Festivals and Events in Ontario for 2016. This designation is well deserved and can be accredited to the dedicated volunteer base that has sustained this festival since its inception. I would like to take this moment to commend their efforts; their actions have put their

community on the map. I would also like to acknowledge the contributions of the many talented musicians and directors who make the Festival possible.

It is my belief that one of the things that make this festival so special is its location in Parry Sound. The Festival of the Sound successfully juxtaposes the elegance of classical music against the rugged, Canadian landscape, creating a highly unique experience. It leaves a very special impression that draws patrons back to the area year after year.

It has become a staple in my summers and I am avidly looking forward to seeing the talent lined up this season. I hope you enjoy your Festival of the Sound experience, and wish you a very happy summer season.

Sincerely,

Norman A. MillerMember of Provincial Parliament, Parry Sound – Muskoka

Jamie McGarvey2016 brings in the 37th season of the Festival of the Sound. On behalf of Council, it is my pleasure to welcome the musicians and patrons to Parry Sound.

Please take time to explore Parry Sound and take in the unequalled beauty of Georgian Bay, the 30,000 Islands and enjoy as many incredible sunsets as you possibly can. Our fitness trail skirts the shore of Georgian Bay, our Museum holds the history of our past, our shops are waiting to be explored and our restaurants will amaze your palates.

Congratulations to everyone involved with the production of the Festival, including Artistic Director James Campbell,

President Bonnie Ramsay and the Festival Board and staff, the many volunteers and all of the guest musicians who again will present an exceptional showcase of wonderful music.

To the many patrons, thank you for your continued support of the Festival of the Sound, deservedly designated this year as one of Ontario’s Top 100 Festivals and Events.

My very best wishes to all for an outstanding and enjoyable Festival experience.

Sincerely,

Jamie McGarveyMayor Town of Parry Sound

It is with great enthusiasm and excitement that I welcome you on behalf of the Festival Board of Directors to our 37th season.

For many years we have enjoyed classical music, jazz weekends, evening cruises on beautiful Georgian Bay, opera, films, and lectures. The beginning of the Festival is like a family reunion. We see old friends, get re-acquainted and make new friends who are experiencing their first Festival.

Our Artistic Director, James Campbell has again compiled a list of world class musicians to perform during the three-week Festival. Some highlights this year are Anagnoson

and Kinton celebrating 40 years as a piano duo, Jim Mason’s 36th year of coming to the Festival, our Classics by Candlelight dinner and concert, and the Elmer Iseler Singers on the opening night.

Great thanks go out to our benefactors, patrons, donors, concert sponsors and volunteers. Without your support each and every year we would not be able to continue. Thank you.

Special thanks to our Festival staff: Alison Scarrow, Executive Director; Tim Brazeau, Operations Manager; Robert Vincent, Marketing Officer; and Ruth Ostrom, Bookkeeper. This group has worked very hard all year to ensure our Festival comes together for July 15th.

I would especially like to thank our Past President Susan Héder who led our Board for the past two years before stepping down in May. We now invite you to sit back and relax and enjoy the music.

A R T I S T I C D I R E C T O R ’ S M E S S A G E

I extend a warm welcome to all of you who come regularly to the Festival of the Sound. We are glad you have returned to your summer musical home. If this is your first visit we offer you a special welcome and hope you will return for many more.

The Festival of the Sound lasts a continuous 23 days and this year is presenting 60 events divided into a number of mini-festivals: each Tuesday to Friday we feature three “teams” of musicians in 30 concerts that go to the heart of chamber music; the Monday night cruises focus on folk music and traditional jazz; and Friday nights are piano nights, featuring three great virtuosi playing the repertoire they love.

Each weekend has it own special flavour: the opening weekend is filled with song, choral music and opera; the music of the great Duke Ellington takes the spotlight on July 26; and Jazz Canada has now expanded into a four day jazz festival on the long Civic Holiday weekend. Our closing weekend is a piano spectacular and the Stockey stage will be filled with pianos and piano music.

I want to thank my colleagues who have given their time and expertise to help with this summer’s programming. Glen Montgomery co-ordinated and will host many of the piano concerts found in week three; Jim Mason and Julie Baumgartel have once again planned a wonderful (and sold-out) concert at “Cafe Zimmerman” at the Seguin Valley Golf Club, and Dave Young is back for a wonderful Jazz Canada weekend.

This summer we are happy to celebrate some milestones: the 10th anniversary of Orford Six Pianos, the 30th of the Lafayette String Quartet, the 40th of Anagnoson and Kinton Piano Duo, and Janina Fialkowska’s 65th birthday.

As always, I wish you the joy, inspiration, and deeply felt emotion that great music can bring.

Strings Across the Sky

Each summer, the students of the Strings Across the Sky Fiddle and Music Camp are hosted by the Parry Sound Friendship Centre. Since 2006, the Festival of the Sound has partnered with Strings Across the Sky (SATS) to host a free family concert showcasing the achievements of the young fiddle students. Under the direction of a team led by Executive Director Debra Jones, SATS opens the door to a rich musical experience by introducing children and youth to violin, guitar and musical performance.

Since 1988, Strings Across the Sky has been working with youth in the High Arctic, First Nation and Metis communities throughout Canada, teaching them to play violin and how to fiddle. SATS has run programs in 17 High Arctic communities and transported over 450 donated violins to the north. Over the years, hundreds of children have benefitted from the music education provided by SATS and the cultural tradition of fiddle music, which once thrived in indigenous communities across Canada, is rekindled and sustained.

Founded by Andrea Hansen, Strings Across the Sky is a not-for-profit registered charity operating on the generosity of donors and funding organizations. Before, during and after today’s performance, we invite you to visit the SATS fundraising table set up in the lobby of the Stockey Centre.

FORM A LASTING LEGACY IN THE LAND THAT YOU LOVE

owes its very beginning to a legacy gift. In 1897, Dr. John R. Stone financed the opening and management of the Parry Sound General Hospital. From humble beginnings serving 70 patients many suffering from typhoid, we’ve grown to a 70-bed acute care hospital operating a 24-hour Emergency that annually serves approximately 20,000 patients in Emergency alone. Dr. Stone’s lasting legacy has made our Parry Sound world safer.

A donation to the Foundation through your will offers our generation the chance to contribute meaningfully to the next. It’s our final statement about ourselves, those we care about and the place that we love. It is enduring.

“In May 1937 a man in his early thirties waits by the lift of a Leningrad apartment block. He waits all through the night, expecting to be taken away to the Big House. Any celebrity he has known in the previous decade is no use to him now. And few who are taken to the Big House ever return.”

So begins Julian Barnes’s masterful novel dedicated to the Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich, from the bestselling, Booker Prize-winning author of The Sense of an Ending. A story about the collision of Art and Power, about human compromise, human cowardice and human courage, it is the work of a true master.

CANADA COUNCIL FOR THE ARTSMUSICAL INSTRUMENT BANK

Rachel Mercer

very 3 years, talented Canadian classical musicians compete for the chance to borrow fine stringed instruments from the Canada Council’s Musical Instrument Bank (MIB). The competition

is intense and is decided by a jury of professional musicians and peers. Musicians who win the competition are often invited to perform with their instruments on some of the world’s most celebrated stages.

The MIB includes close to 22 magnificent instruments worth a total of over $41 million. These historically-significant violins, cellos and bows, ranging in age from the late 1600s to the early 1900s, were crafted by the world’s finest luthiers such as Stradivari, Gagliano and Pressenda.

The Canada Council funds, administers and promotes the MIB collection and competition. It started the MIB in 1985 through the generous legacy of $100,000 from the Barwick family of Ottawa. Since then it has grown steadily thanks to generous donations, loans, and purchases made with donated funds.

www.instrumentbank.canadacouncil.ca

Winner in the 2015 Canada Council Musical Instrument Bank competition, Rachel Mercer is grateful to have been awarded the 1730 Newland Joannes Franciscus Celoniatus cello for a 3 year loan. The Canada Council for the Arts is proud to partner with the Festival of the Sound to present a performance by Rachel Mercer.

Adiamo molto. PensavoLento Passionata – Allegro con brio

“The origin of the name “Threnody” for my Second Quartet arose from the wish I always had to be able at sometimes in my life to write a musical requiem or an expression of sorrow for our war century. In this musical vision I have felt the suffering and tragedy mingled with an exquisite tenderness of the lost souls of our generation. But the music is also austere in some passages… the second movement, I feel, is essentially a song of sorrow, while the third movement has been described as the wind of war over the land.”
