Convention of Indian Geological Congress

The 16th and A three Day National Seminar on “Climate Changeand Role of Geoscientific Community to counter its impact”was inaugurated on Feb 22nd 2009 by Dr. Shailesh Nayak,Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences Government of India.

Morethan 200 delegates from India and abroad participatedin this seminar. Dr. R.K. Pachauri, Director General, TERI,delivered a keynote address on global climate change.Shri D.K. Pande, Director (Exploration) ONGC and Presidentof IGC presided over the Inaugural function. Dr. R.K. Chadha,Secretary, 16th IGC proposed the vote of thanks.

National Science DayNational Science Day Celebrations at NGRI On the occasionof the National Science Day, 2009 ,a lecture was deliveredby Shri P.K. Bhowmick, Group Leader and Group GeneralManager, K.D.M.I.P.E., ONGC, Dehradun on the topic“Search for New Hydrocarbons in Natural and Semi NaturalBasis”. In his lecture, Shri Bhowmick explained the presenttrends in Hydrocarbon Exploration and stressed the needfor alternative resources to meet the energy demand.On this occasion, the chief guest released the NGRI AnnualReport 2008-2009, Research Output 2008 and “Contributionsof Gravity and Magnetic Studies Group for the period1997-2006”.

NGRI Hosts the 40th SSBM Tournaments (Indoor) Final

The NGRI Staff Club hosted the Finals of Five Indoor eventsviz., TableTennis,Shuttle Badminton, Chess, Carroms andBridge. 180 participants from 26 CSIR laboratories participatedin various events held at NGRI from 20-22ndFeb.,2009. Theinaugural function was held on the lawns of NGRI with a colorfulmarchpast by all the sportspersons. Mrs., Gutta Jwala,National Badminton player was the Chief Guest and declaredthe games open.The President of sports promotionBoard,Dr.PG.Rao, Director–NEIST, Dr. V.P Dimri, Director-NGRI, Dr. P. Koteswara Rao, Vice President -NGRI Staff Cluband Dr A.S.S.S.R.S. Prasad, Secretary - NGRI Staff Club wereamong those present in the inaugural function.

Prof. Mrs. Vani Brahmachari was the Chief Guest for theValedictory function which was organized on 22nd Feb ,2009at the NGRI Open Air Auditorium. The Chief Guest praisedthe efforts of the organizers and distributed awards to thewinning sports persons. A number of staff members of NGRIhave received awards in different events. Groundwater WorkshopA workshop was organized from March 12-14, 2009 onIntegrated Water Management. The workshop was attendedby delegates from French Institute for Research in Agriculture(INRA), Indo-French Centre for Groundwater Research, jointcentre of BRGM and NGRI (IFCGR), Indo-French Cell forWater Sciences, joint centre of IRD and IISC (IFCWS), Centrede Sciences Humaines de New Delhi (CSH), Institut Françaisde Pondichéry (IFP) The workshop ended with a paneldiscussion leading to a number of suggestions to beimplemented in due course of time

Workshop on Gold Metallogeny

National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), Hyderabad,and the Department of Geology, University of Delhi, jointlyorganized an International Field Workshop on ‘GoldMetallogeny in India’ from December 3-13, 2008. A total of40 research scientists and students representing 11 academicand research institutions, two geological organizations(GSI and USGS), and six exploration companies activelyparticipated in the Conference-cum-Field-Workshop. TheWorkshop format featured a two-day Opening Conferenceat NGRI, Hyderabad, followed by field trips to the Precambriangreenstone belt and to the Proterozoic sedimentary rock-hosted Bhukia Gold Prospect in Rajasthan. The Workshopended with a one-day Concluding Session at the Universityof Delhi, New Delhi. Dr. V.Balaram was the Convener fromNGRI and Prof. Mihir Deb was the Convener from DelhiUniversity
