INTEGRATING THE BEST AUDIO-VISUAL TECHNOLOGY FOR GEORGIA DOT

Unified Technology Systems has been providing audiovisual and communications systems to government entities, corporations, educators, and religious organizations for over 25 years.

We not only have the largest presence in our industry in the southeastern United States, we achieve a national and global reach through our network of AV Partnership firms.

At Unified Technology Systems, we focus on the tools of communication and collaboration to help our clients connect throughout their organizations, with their clients, and with partners.

4 Client: GDOT

6 Challenge: Keep on Rolling

9 Solution: A Video Wall for the 21st Century

10 Why Unified Technology Systems?

11 Bottom Line: Taxpayers Triumph

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) oversees more than 6,992 lane-miles of interstate highways crisscrossing the Peachtree state, routes like I-20, I-95, I-285, and I-475 from its Traffic Operations Center.

Add to its care and maintenance of those interstate arteries the nearly 18,000 miles of state highways, and over 87,193 miles of rural roads GDOT has to monitor. The job is enormous and requires constant vigilance.

The Operations Team at GDOT, anticipating the North Corridor/I-75 opening in November, 2018, requested the expertise of Unified Technology Systems to solve the challenge of keeping the eyes of the Traffic Operations Center on all those roads.

The Center needed maximum coverage, reliable video displays, and superb viewing capacity for monitoring interstate, state and rural roads throughout the state.

THE CLIENT: GDOT

THE CHALLENGE: KEEP ON ROLLING

7

Existing video walls at GDOT were old enough that they were no longer supported by vendors. The original 1994 system had received an upgrade once, some nine years ago, but no amount of tinkering would coax more capacity or better resolution from the old system.

Any upgrades to the video wall had to be designed to minimize interruption in GDOT’s mission to monitor and collect footage of all the roads it supervises, day and night, 365 days a year.

Add to that respect for the state’s taxpayers; the total price tag for the project had to show a sensible balance between increased surveillance capacity and reasonable cost.

Unified also had to provide GDOT with a solution that would work as well a decade from now as it will now. Solving the I-75 opening would be good; keeping Georgia’s wheels rolling through 2028 would be better.

THE SOLUTION: A VIDEO WALL FOR THE 21ST CENTURY

Planar, a leading name in fine pitch LED video walls, was the go-to provider Unified Technology Systems selected to satisfy GDOT’s rigorous demands. Unified Technology Systems went big and bold: 35 LED cabinets providing over 305 feet of display area in a video wall nearly 20 feet wide and 15.5 feet tall.

GDOT’s massive new video wall restored the Center’s original footprint and scope after the last “upgrade” trimmed screen size. Unified knew GDOT needed uniformity, flatness, and the highest possible (yet affordable) pixel density in order to deliver faithful, accurate video to Center personnel.

This called for only the best. The video wall Unified installed was designed to handle long duty cycles. Imagine GDOT’s eyes on the road going dark even for a short time. That is an unacceptable risk to the public’s safety and the smooth operating efficiency of Georgia’s roads. This new video wall will provide years of faithful, flawless service. Imagine Georgia’s taxpayers being hit with another expensive upgrade two or three years from now. Also unacceptable.

GDOT is not a typical customer for most AV and technology support firms. For Unified Technology Systems, though, government agencies and their unique demands are regular customers. GDOT knew that Unified had experience where it counted:

• Experience in installing Planar LCD and LED Video walls

• Experience in providing unparalleled support and service for all installations

• A long history of being an authorized, fully compliant State-of-Georgia AV contract vendor

Perhaps most important to GDOT, Unified Technology Systems was a known quantity at the Traffic Operations Center, having installed, serviced, and supported other projects at GDOT’s facility. GDOT knew it was partnering with a safe, reliable, trustworthy and local company.

WHY UNIFIED TECHNOLOGY SYSTEMS?

What did Georgia’s taxpayers get for their investment in GDOT’s video wall? An extensive upgrade, including modifications to structure, removing the old video wall components, installing the new Planar Direct View LED video wall, testing, and training. Unified Technology Systems not only upgraded the video wall with the new super-sharp Planar system, it restored the cosmetic appearance of the wall after installation. As with all Unified installations, GDOT receives superior service and maintenance as part of the total package. GDOT receives troubleshooting, repair or replacement of all Unified-installed equipment.

Even after the sale, after the installation, and after the training, Unified is still on the job, offering GDOT preventive maintenance, and an Unified Care three-year service agreement.

Once Unified Technology Systems goes down the road with a client, we just cannot stop until we know we have reached journey’s end: a completely satisfied customer.

THE BOTTOM LINE: TAXPAYERS TRIUMPH

Fast Lane

Hardware alone would not support GDOT’s mission. The engineers and technicians from Unified needed to find a fast, efficient way to remove the existing video wall cubes, store them safely, remove the existing mounting system (and store it safely), install the Planar Direct View 1.8 PP LED Video Wall, connect it, test it, commission it, and train GDOT personnel in its use.

GDOT needed every part of the solution to be up and running quickly and reliably. Unified put the Traffic Operations Center in the fast lane and got the job done.
