As Rosemont School enters its 67th year of “Meeting the Wants of the Age,” we are amidst a new phase of self-

examination as we continue to position the School as a prime

destination for Catholic, coeducational, independent education in

a very competitive Philadelphia-area market.

Last spring the Board of Trustees authorized the administration

to enter into a partnership with Cognitive Marketing, a brand

development and strategic marketing firm that specializes in

independent schools. During the spring and summer, the firm

interviewed all members of Rosemont School’s

faculty and staff; more than 100 current

families and alumni;

and many families

that for one reason

or another chose to

send their children

elsewhere. Cognitive’s

market study will help

Rosemont School to create

a brand and positioning plan

that will more effectively target

families and raise awareness of

this great school.

This partnership with

Cognitive Marketing is a result

of our 2012 Strategic Plan, where Rosemont School was charged

to “articulate clearly and boldly the benefits and blessings of a

Catholic, coeducational, independent school education in the

tradition of Cornelia Connelly,” as part of our

goal to “Amplify Our Voice.”

Concurrently, Rosemont School has

welcomed a longtime parent, Megan

McHugh P’15’16’18, as our new Director of

Admissions. Megan and her husband T.J.

have been associated with RSHC for 13 years.

In addition, Megan was Parents’ Liaison for

five years, and looks forward to “sharing my

love of this School with others.”

“We have a phenomenal community, and I

really do believe that the School nurtured our

children in an age-appropriate way from the

time they were 3 years old in

all aspects of their education,”

Megan said. “Rosemont School

really enables each child to

achieve excellence and provides

them opportunities that you

don’t find at most schools.”

The feedback that she has

received from alumni and

their parents, Megan said,

demonstrates “overwhelmingly

how pleased they are with how

their children perform in high

school, how well their children

were prepared by Rosemont

School. We provide great educational opportunities but

also morals, values, and a love of God. To get all of these

things in a loving and caring environment is what makes

Rosemont School such a special experience.” d

Spirit of Community ServiCe thriveS at rShC

Tom LengeL’s message

Dear Rosemont School Parents, Alums, and Friends,In addition to the “deep and wide”

coverage of events and happenings in

our School community as reflected in

this edition of Cachet, you will note that

our feature article focuses on our robust

Service Learning program.

As a Holy Child School, we are charged

“to work for Christian principles of justice,

peace and compassion in every facet of

life” and among the criteria supporting

that goal are the following:

• Programs are provided for all

constituencies that facilitate

reflection leading to action for

peace and justice in our neighborhoods, nation, and global community.

• The School has a dynamic community service program which requires student participation. The adults in

the School community, by their involvement, model the habit of service.

• The program instills in students a life commitment to social responsibility and environmental stewardship

realized in the “Actions Not Words.”

For many years, Rosemont School of the Holy Child has emphasized community service, and our older alums can

easily recall “Mission Parties.” I am pleased to report that that spirit is alive and well at Rosemont School in 2015.

We continue to believe that we are educating the leaders of tomorrow’s businesses, government, church, and

society. Even at an early age, we want Rosemont School children to understand the challenges of the world they will

inherit, and more importantly, the responsibility they will have as leaders to promote justice and peace in all that

they do.

In the last few years we have added service opportunities to many of our faculty-staff in-service days; served meals

to families at the Ronald McDonald House; launched a morning of service on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day for all

members of our community; and provided more opportunities for children to reflect on the service they have done.

In all these intentional ways, we have tried to “meet the wants of the age” with respect to our obligation to serve

and take care of the less fortunate in our communities.

Thank you for supporting these endeavors, and for your overall support of Rosemont School! d

Sincerely,

Thomas G. Lengel P’12

In the heart of spring, according to the Class of 2015, it was the perfect season to give thanks for a Rosemont

School education during the Commencement Mass at St.

Thomas of Villanova Rosemont Chapel last May.

In his presentation of the Graduates’ Theme, Gratitude,

Co-President Tommy McHugh said there were many people to

thank for the Rosemont School experience.

On behalf of his classmates, Tommy said, “Sending children

to private school is a big sacrifice, and our parents have worked

hard to give us the gift of a great education. They are the

reasons we are here.”

Teachers, he said, provided “life lessons that we will carry

with us forever … advice, encouragement, and comfort we

have received from these teachers is beyond words. They ALL

believed in us.” To his fellow graduates, Tommy said, “I have

loved being your classmate. I know that we will all go on to

achieve great things.”

In her Reflection, Co-President Kayla Brown recounted the

highlights of her years at RSHC, “where teachers encourage us

to work to our fullest potential, where friendships can last a

lifetime, and where we’re prepared for the future. Rosemont has

been a second family to us.”

To her classmates, she advised, “Let’s take the lessons

learned at Rosemont and use them throughout our lives, to be

leaders in our high schools and colleges, and to be the future

leaders of our country, through Actions Not Words.”

Twenty-three students received diplomas during the Mass.

Seven students were recognized during the evening for receiving

a total of nine academic scholarships to area private schools. d

We Are enriched by GivinG to others By Elizabeth McNulty ’15

At Rosemont School, I learned how to care for others. Through the years we learned many ways to benefit the greater community, and to be thankful not only to have been given so much but also how enriched we can become by helping others.

Students at a young age are taught through service projects, such as Alex’s Lemonade Stand, which raises money for cancer research. Every year afterward, our grade took on a special community service project.

A memorable opportunity came in 5th grade when we packed Jared Boxes with toys for children in the hospital, customized for a specific gender and age. As I went to the store to purchase what I thought a little boy would want, I realized how hard it must be for him. This was a great way to get our whole class involved, and it gave us more responsibility for completing a community service project.

Rosemont School also promotes service projects that involve the whole community. This year we collected cans for the Patrician Society Food Cupboard and bought presents for other children at Christmas. We donated $5 for charities on a free dress day, and packed lunches and toiletries for the needy on the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.

This is true Service Learning; not only can you give back, but you also develop a greater understanding about your community.

In 5th grade I became part of a wider school community service effort. I was asked by an older friend to be the RSHC

representative and initiate the CandyCare collection. The goal of this project is to collect excess Halloween candy from grade school kids in the area and distribute it to homeless shelters so that it can be given out during the Thanksgiving holiday.

I approached Mrs. Lynn Gosnell with my idea, and she offered her full support. I began broadcasting for donations on the morning announcements, and the response from students, faculty, and staff was amazing!

I felt so accomplished doing it on my own and enjoyed making a difference. Little kids would bring in ziplock bags with three or four treats, and parents would hand over shopping bags of extra candy. Boxes and boxes of treats surrounded Mrs. Kit Tosti’s Academic Center desk. I continued the CandyCare project through 8th grade, and the donations grew larger each year. Students told me they enjoyed going house to house to get candy for others who needed it more than they did.

That is why I think this service project is special, and it will be with me always.

Elizabeth McNulty ’15 was this year’s co-recipient of the Wankmiller Award for Community Service. d

Turn around some day, and you will find Rosemont School

children there, connecting, providing, and giving of themselves.

It is a function of the Service Learning program at Rosemont

School, which couples knowledge about a community need with

initiatives to address it. Community service also is a core principle

of the Holy Child Network of Schools, to “work for Christian

principles of justice, peace and compassion in every facet of life.”

(Goal 4)

An example: on April 26, about 40 students, faculty, parents,

and alums joined the Sweet Carolyn team for the Multiple Sclerosis

Walk in Devon, PA in honor of Carolyn Weber P’12’16. The

Rosemont School community also made contributions to the team.

“My wife Carolyn has been battling the unforgiving and

devastating effects of Multiple Sclerosis for almost 20 years,”

said Brad Weber P’12’16. “When we joined the RSHC community

almost 15 years ago, suddenly our support network grew

exponentially. We now have what seems like an army fighting

shoulder to shoulder with us against MS.”

The walk typifies the School’s spontaneous approach to service

above self, in addition to a school calendar that is flush with

service projects.

“Service coordinators at other schools are surprised by how

much we do here,” said Deb

Borden, Associate Head of

School and Director of the

Middle School. “It’s not a

‘look at me’ program, it’s

what we do. It’s subtle, and

it’s a thread that weaves

through everything. At the

Sweet Carolyn walk, tons

of Rosemont School alums,

faculty, kids, and parents

showed up just because a

community member was in

need.”

“Like most other aspects

of the School curriculum,

our Service Learning Program

enriches our children and is

an example of how we make our overall program relevant in the

21st century,” Head

of School Tom Lengel

P’12 said.

“Over the years

we’ve added projects

like Empty Bowls and

Dr. Martin Luther King,

Jr. Morning of Service,

where families come

together to help less-

privileged families.

The response that we

have received from our

families illustrates how

valuable they consider

these projects to be.”

Invariably, these

projects generally

come to fruition well

after the School day has ended. Families eagerly volunteered to

travel to Philadelphia and Delaware on weekends to prepare meals

for families of desperately ill children at regional Ronald McDonald

Houses. Families donated days off for the Dr. Martin Luther

King, Jr. Morning of Service, and evenings for Empty Bowls and

the SChool that

Rosemont School volunteers were part of the Sweet Carolyn Team for RSHC parent Carolyn Weber P’12’16 during the MS Walk in Devon last April. “It was the largest team at the event over two years running. What a testimonial for the importance of the event and the love from our RSHC community,” said Brad Weber P’12’16.

“It is so wonderful to see everyone interact,” said Lynn Gosnell

P’00’02’05’06, RSHC’s Community Service Coordinator, recalling

the evening at The Village. “Our parents have to tear their children

away from their community tables when they pick up at the end of

the evening. It is beautiful to watch!”

The students, even as young as Early Childhood, are eager to

cross generational boundaries, such as visiting the Sisters at New

Sharon for Masses, parties, and meals.

“It’s mutually beneficial experience,” said Mrs. Borden. “Most

things, like drives, are parent-driven, but we look for student-

directed service, which I think is always the way to go. That way

they feel empowered and can make a difference.”

Even children in the Three Years program, Mrs. Borden said,

“certainly understand kindness. They know when people are in

need of help. Kids of all ages do that naturally.”

“Service Learning is a thread of our leadership program, a very

important thread. It becomes part of who you are. Giving back is a

tangible thing we want to teach our children.” d

4th GrAders “dive” into cushions to help needy

You can pardon Rosemont School’s 4th graders for walking with their heads down around campus. They merely are trying to help people. For five years, 4th graders aided the less fortunate by collecting “found” change for a Diving Jar. The students scarfed up precious metals from cushions, auto mats, sidewalks, playgrounds, even dryers, recalled retired teacher Ann James. She “coined” the concept “Diving Into Cushions,” organized to raise money for a sister school, St. Rose of Lima in Philadelphia. “Children used to get so excited just to find a penny or nickel on the playground,” Mrs. James said with a laugh. “More importantly, the children took ownership of the projects because they voted on which organizations to support, which made it special to them.” These found funds have purchased a wall map and Time

for Kids subscriptions for St. Rose of Lima, as well as donations for the Peace Corps. This year the children decided on three new projects – and two of them gained wide attention. The children raised $290.82 for the St. Joseph’s University Kinney Center for Autistic Children, which was co-founded by the grandparents of 4th grader Max Barton. After the donation, three students

attended a St. Joseph’s University basketball game, where they were called onto the court during a break to present their donation and be recognized. “Of course the whole place erupted in applause,” said Mrs. James. “The children went off the court with their arms in the air.” In addition, the students’ $162.21 donation to the Make A Wish Foundation was cited on Comcast Sports Net. A chosen young boy attended a Flyers’ practice, where he received hockey gear and tickets to a game. “The network said this was made possible by kids at Rosemont School of the Holy Child,” Mrs. James recalled. The children also donated more than $109 to Project Hope, an international health care organization. Max Barton said he enjoys coin hunting while returning to School from Masses at Rosemont College: “It really is fun to collect coins so that we can help the less-fortunate people. It makes me feel good to help children in a special way.” Classmate Tess Cosgrave – who said she found $5 just by kicking mulch - agreed: “It makes me feel happy to know I am helping others with their lives.” Mariel O’Leary donated 20 quarters that she found scattered on the grass after a community baseball game.

“You can’t have a better feeling than helping someone,” she said. d

It seems this school has always been part of my being. I came here in 1st grade, and I remember how Head of School

Mother Mary Elizabeth kissed each child on the cheek the first day

of school at the Great Hall entrance. In our room I was greeted by

Mother Mary Constance, whom I absolutely loved. The impression

she made lasted a lifetime, and it was because of her that I wanted

to teach; my dream was to be the inspiration she was and to treat

people the way she did – and to teach here.

When I graduated from Immaculata College in 1967, I was asked

by Head of School Sr. Helena Mayer if I wanted to teach at Rosemont

School and I said,

“absolutely yes.” My

dream had come

true!

School is so

di f ferent now,

largely because of

how we incorporate

technology in our

curriculum; it has

enhanced what we

do and has given our

children a broader

view of the world.

Yet, so many things

remain the same.

The most important

thing to me is that all

children are treated

with respect and leave with a lot of good memories.

Cornelia Connelly said, “Confidence begets confidence.” We

want children to become confident and to do that, we have to be

confident of them.

I have taught 2nd grade for all but two years, and I have

especially enjoyed teaching children the sacraments. It is so

meaningful to help children to develop their faith and to hear the

children express that faith.

This year each child wrote a memory of something they learned

in religion class. All of them are so precious, but here are a few:

“I learned to get to Heaven, you need to walk humbly, love

tenderly, and do justice.”

“I learned to stay on the path to Heaven and if I go the wrong

way, turn back.”

I certainly feel at this point in their little lives that they got

something out of this. I pray it stays with them.

(Husband) Denny and I are so happy that we were able to send

four children here and to see them experience the things that I

experienced. I am so thankful that I get to experience them still. d

FAMILY PROFILE

It’s a typical late-day mealtime for the D’Elias, snacking around the island in their Newtown Square kitchen. The

D’Elias rarely sit still, it seems, even for dinner, with activities

within and without Rosemont School frequenting the family

calendar.

The D’Elias - including parents Steve and Chrissy, sons Stephen

’13, Joey ’14, and Tristan ’17, and daughter Thalia ’18 - have been

a Rosemont School family since 2005, when Stephen entered 1st

grade. They were encouraged to visit by a neighbor, Maria Latran

P’08’10’12, said Steve, and the family immediately felt a connection.

Steve and Chrissy liked the size of the school, the small classes,

and the Catholic affiliation. Both of them had graduated from

Archdiocesan schools in Philadelphia.

“We think it’s important being in a school that has a religious

background.” said Steve. “Rosemont School also has its own chapel,

and that’s a good thing to have.”

“It felt like a family-oriented school, and a very safe

environment,” said Chrissy, “with children that were very well-

taken care of. The children always seem happy to see the teachers,

and that shows this is a special place.”

Chrissy was involved for many years in the Parents’ Auxiliary,

serving as president in 2012-2013 and chairing the Spring Auction

in 2011. She also creates several photo galleries each year for

Rosemont School, including the Commencement video.

The D’Elias are a family that clearly love sports. Fall and winter

pursuits outside of Rosemont School include competitive ice

hockey, with all four children playing in leagues that often take

them through the friendly skies. In the spring, the focus turns to

roller hockey. Tristan (football, basketball) and Thalia (field hockey,

basketball) also fit Rosemont School sports into their schedules.

Stephen appreciated the value of his education when he moved

on to Malvern Preparatory School after graduation.

“The first year I felt I was over-prepared compared with other

students,” he said. “All of the teachers prepared us well.”

Joey, now a sophomore at Malvern Prep, says that he enjoyed

the close-knit classes and relationships with his peers, and claimed

“you never lose touch with them.”

“The other day I was on the phone and I was asked, ‘who are

you texting now?’ I said it was someone from Rosemont,” he

added with a laugh.

The Rosemont School model of Young Falcons to 8th grade

is particularly helpful for the children’s advancement, Steve said.

“If it were Kindergarten through 12, you just would be seeing

the same kids for all those years,” he said. “Transferring into

high school helps the kids get the experience of transitioning into

college.”

“And the 8th grade graduation is something Rosemont School

does so well. It really makes for a special feeling for the kids and

their parents.” d

“ The students always seem happy to see the teachers, and that shows this is a special place.”Chrissy D’Elia

Talk to John R. McConnell ’66 about his second career, and be

prepared to do a lot of listening.

His passion is both genuine and

unchecked.

John retired recently as partner

at Deloitte Consulting after 27 years,

and decided it was time to give

back to disadvantaged children in

Philadelphia.

“I’m a native Philadelphian and I

love this community, but we have a

crisis in education that is destroying

the city,” John said.

“I received an excellent education

from an excellent school at Rosemont

School of the Holy Child. I didn’t do

anything to deserve or earn the great

education that I received at Rosemont School, St. Joseph’s Prep,

and Georgetown. I felt like I hit the lottery three times. It was

given to me by the accident of my birth. It enabled a purposeful

and happy life.”

So wouldn’t it be interesting, post-Deloitte, to create a similar

education model to help transform people from a life of poverty

to a life of dignity?

Thus was born Cristo Rey Philadelphia High School in North

Philadelphia in 2012.

The school is exclusively for low-income children. Applicants

are extensively interviewed and are required to take an academic

test. They also understand that the reward of a first-class

education requires a major commitment.

The academic day begins at 7:55 a.m. and ends at 4:30 p.m.,

from the second Monday in August through the last Friday in June.

Cristo Rey’s curriculum combines formidable academics with

work internships in businesses where the students are mentored

by college-educated adults. The work program accelerates the

students’ development, and the wages they earn help pay for the

cost of their education.

By any measure, Cristo Rey is a major success. This year’s

enrollment is a building-busting 450 students. Cristo Rey looks

forward to its first

graduation in June

2016, with a class

of 95 - all of them

expected to attend college.

“When we opened the school, part of the objective was to

expose these good kids to a bigger world,” John said. “Businesses,

too, have the opportunity to work with lower income people that

constitute one-third of the population of Philadelphia. Cristo Rey

opens the real world to all of us!”

“It’s such a wonderful feeling at the end of a day. I know kids

who came here three years ago thinking they weren’t going to

amount to anything. Now they come back from working at a law

firm – certain that they will be a lawyer!”

John said that the Rosemont School motto of “Actions Not

Words” is a guiding principle.

“A lot of people can talk about this problem in the city, but my

job is to corral other like-minded people to make this happen,” he

said. “These kids might not have started at the same place as I did

in life, but they will finish at the same place.” d

ST. DAVIDS, PA

“ I received an excellent education from an excellent school at Rosemont School of the Holy Child. That is what I wanted for the children at Cristo Rey.”

Anne Kaier ’59 has alove of language. It has

been the foundation of her

extended education, from

Rosemont School of the Holy

Child, to Oxford, England, to

Harvard University, where

she gained her doctorate. It

was the basis of her career

as a corporate copywriter

for Shared Medical Systems

and is now to her second

career as an award-winning

author and professor of

literature and creative writing

at Rosemont College and

Arcadia University.

Where she once

wrote for her livelihood,

Anne Kaier now creates

for her soul.

Recently, she published a brief memoir, Home with Henry,

about her trials and tribulations with a skittish cat that she

rescued from a highway. The tidy 102-page book (check out Anne’s

introduction at http://www.annekaier.com/content/home-henry-

memoir) earned glowing praise from John Grogan, author of the

New York Times bestseller, Marley & Me: “Pet lovers will lap up

every word.”

For the Philadelphia Stories website, the reviewer, Jeanne,

said, “It’s not maudlin, it’s not strident, and it’s not a cry in the

wilderness. It’s about relationships, trust, and being comfortable

in your own skin. She writes cleanly and well.”

“Writing comes naturally to me,” said Anne during an interview

last spring. “We were encouraged by the Sisters at Rosemont School

to write reasonably sophisticated sentences and diagram them.

Rosemont School was very, very good to me. I was surrounded by

loving people, and it was a place that I felt accepted and respected.”

Anne still speaks warmly of her Rosemont School classmates,

such as Kris Flick Strid ’59 P’83’86’88’89 GP’15’17’21’21’22’23,

Judy Wankmiller Cassidy ’59 P’85’86’90’93, and Helen Meeks

Horstmann ’59. Trust and companionship were vital to young

Anne – as they were for Henry the stray. She was born with a rare

skin condition that she discussed candidly in her essay, “River

Creature.”

“People with this condition might have been scorned and had

difficult childhoods,” said Anne. “I didn’t experience that at all,

and that has much to do with the ethos of Rosemont School.

Teachers were protective of children who were vulnerable in many

different ways.”

Outside of teaching and writing, Anne also is a supporter

of Philadelphia poetry organizations and frequently performs

readings of her work.

“For my readers,” Anne said, “I hope they feel that they are not

alone, that other people have had experiences similar to theirs. For

my students, I hope that they will learn to think for themselves.” d

Annual Fund Annual Fund

Annual FundThe Annual Fund is an ongoing annual fundraising initiative that touches every member of our community. Every student that has attended Rosemont School both past and present has benefitted from the Annual Fund, as it bridges the gap between tuition and the actual operating expenses of the School.
