Movies can build bridges to other cultures. They can open our eyes, our ears and minds to other experiences, other points of view. They can blow our minds. They can inspire us. They make us laugh, cry and even shake a fist at the screen in anger. They are our constant companion regardless of where, how and when we see them. And for 33 years, the Chicago Latino Film Festival has been blowing and enriching the minds of hundreds of thousands of moviegoers who marvel, laugh, cry, and even shake a fist at the stories, ideas, sights and sounds produced by the Latino diaspora.
This year the Festival opens with the truly honest and touching relationship drama “One Night of Love” starring two of Argentina’s top TV stars –Sebastian Wainraich and Carla Peterson– and closes with the Chicago premiere of Elia Schneider’s powerful award-winning drama “Tamara” about Venezuela’s first transgender person elected to that country’s National Assembly. Other highlights include: two very different musicals, Peru’s “Crazy in Love” and Spain’s “At Your Doorstep”; three films set in Medellin, Colombia (“The Animal’s Wife,” Victor Gaviria’s brutal portrait of misogyny in that region; “The Nobodies” about punk life in that city; and the bittersweet romantic drama “That Thing Called Love”); Emilio Ruiz Barrachina’s modern day adaptation of Garcia Lorca’s classic play “Yerma”; and “Tales of Mexico,” an ambitious undertaking featuring eight of Mexico’s most daring filmmakers.
This is just the tip of the iceberg. We are showing films that have won major awards at such prestigious film festivals as Sundance, Rotterdam and Venice. We are welcoming the new films from past festival guests Ariel Winograd, Ari Maniel Cruz and Claudia Sainte-Luce, among others. Lastly, as customary, at least a third of our feature-length films were directed by first-time filmmakers (men and women), evidence of the continuing vitality of our cinema.
We are also celebrating the 100th anniversary of the birth of Pedro Infante, a legend of the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema, through a special concert at the National Museum of Mexican Arts on April 26 and 27. “Pedro, Mi Amor” is a program featuring some of Infante’s best loved songs performed by flutist Elena Duran and pianist Santiago Piñeirua with clips from his iconic movies.
With the Chicago Latino Film Festival we planted a seed in this city and from that seed a beautiful tree named the International Latino Cultural Center was born. This tree has many branches: the Latino Music Festival, now in its 12th season; Film in the Park, also in its 12th season; the monthly Reel Film Club series, already in its 8th year.
I am also delighted to announce the upcoming 1st International Latino Theater Festival presented by the newly created Chicago Latino Theater Alliance (CLATA), a consortium that includes the National Museum of Mexican Art, the Puerto Rican Arts Alliance, and the International Latino Cultural Center.
As always, I am grateful for the continued support we receive from volunteers, staffers, board members, foundations, the Ibero-American Consular Association and sponsors who strongly believe, like I do, on the need for events like this one in our City.

Presently, in its 22nd year, the Matinee Outreach Program is a fundamental educational platform that continues to channel the cultural significance of film to elementary and high school students. The program began as an event that attracted 1,000 students and has grown to nearly 5,000 Chicago area student attendees.
The Matinee Outreach Program provides students the opportunity to learn about the diversity of other cultures, the possibility to connect with their cultural heritage, and the prospect of meeting film directors/actors/producers to discuss viable career options in the arts.
The 2017 Matinee Outreach Program is supported by a FilmWatch Grant from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science.
The Student Film Segment of the Chicago Latino Film Festival will present short films made by student filmmakers from Mexico, Chile, Ecuador, DePaul University and high school students in the Chicago area. This segment will feature the finalists of the Mexican film competition, Haz Corto con la Corrupción/ Short Films Against Corruption and short films by Chicago’s own Gallery 37 Video Production Class. It will showcase the work being done at film schools, presenting the perspective of young people in this new era of globalization and technology.
The Student Film Segment of the Chicago Latino Film Festival is organized by the International Latino Cultural Center, The Latino Media and Communication, The College of Computing and Digital Media and The Latin America Initiatives at DePaul University.

It just takes one dinner, the news that their best friends are separating, and a rather eventful walk around their neighborhood to force them to confront their doubts. Director Guerschuny and Wainraich (who co-wrote the script) deliver an intimate, penetrating and bittersweet portrait of a marriage ata crossroads.

Elia Schneider’s latest film tells the remarkable real life story of Tamara Adrian, Venezuela’s first transgender person elected to that country’s National Assembly. Product of a conservative family, Adrian harbored strong feelings of identifying as female from a young age. When Tomas finally decides to become Tamara, she takes on a prejudiced state system that refuses to accept her new identity, making life virtually impossible to her. Undeterred, she fights back, becoming one of Venezuela’s top LGBTQ and women’s rights activists. “Tamara” is more than a traditional biopic; it confronts head-on a country’s trans-phobia as it celebrates the courage of a community unafraid to fight for its rights. Winner of the Nueva Vision Award for Spanish/Latin American Cinema at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.
La más reciente película del duo Elia Schneider (directora) y José Ramón Novoa (productor) narra la historia verídica de Tamara Adrián, la primera persona transgénero de Venezuela en ser elegida para la Asamblea Nacional de ese país. Producto de una familia conservadora, Adrián se identificó como mujer desde temprana edad. Cuando Tomás finalmente decide convertirse en Tamara, ella se enfrentará a un sistema estatal que se niega a aceptar su nueva identidad. A raíz de ello, Tamara se convierte en una de las principales activistas LGBTQ y por los derechos de las mujeres en Venezuela. “Tamara” es más que una película biográfica tradicional; enfrenta la transfobia de su país a la vez que celebra la valentía de una comunidad que lucha por sus derechos. Ganadora del Premio Nueva Visión al Cine Español / Latinoamericano en el Festival Internacional de Cine de Santa Bárbara.

Leonardo Sbaraglia (“Wild Tales”) stars in this tense and claustrophobic “Rear Window” like thriller as Joaquin, a paraplegic computer engineer still mourning the death of his wife and daughter who, while working in the basement of his house, hears voices coming through the wall. With the aid of a stethoscope and a camera, he discovers that a gang of thieves is digging a tunnel to rob the bank next door. He puts in motion a plan to rob the thieves without realizing that his new tenant and her daughter are part of the operation.

Marcos Carnevale has seen his box-offi ce hits “Elsa y Fred” and “Heart of a Lion” remade in the United States (the 2014 “Elsa & Fred” starring Christopher Plummer and Shirley MacLaine) and France (“Up for Love” starring Jean Dujardin). He returns this favor with this remake of the French box office hit “Intouchables”. Felipe (Oscar Martinez), a wealthy businessman who becomes quadriplegic after an accident hires Tito (Rodrigo de la Serna) as his therapeutic assistant even though he is not qualified. Tito adapts pretty quickly and helps Felipe enjoy life again.

Following her doctor’s orders, she begins to take her three-month old son to the neighborhood park where she meets the rather quirky and spontaneous Rosa (director Katz) who is taking care of a newborn as well. A dine-and-dash incident at a local restaurant, a meeting with Rosa’s equally abrasive sister, and the rumors about her family situation makes Liz wonder about her friend’s true intentions.

When is cheating on your partner not cheating? That’s the premise of Festival favorite Ariel Winograd’s (No Kids, My First Wedding) new, outrageous comedy. Camila and Mateo have lived happily together for eight years but that’s about to change when, over dinner with friends, they discuss the true meaning of cheating and come to the conclusion that one can be unfaithful as long as it is with an “unreachable” celebrity. Camila and Mateo choose their respective imaginary hook-ups without realizing that their “wishes” will soon be granted.

Tonchy Antezana’s latest feature sheds light on a, for many, unknown chapter of Latin American history: the battle fought between September 7 and 29, 1932 between the Bolivian and Paraguayan armies in and around the stronghold of Boquerón that led to a full-scale border war between both countries. Told from the perspective of four young Bolivian soldiers from different walks of life, Antezana recreates the conditions endured by the 619 Bolivian soldiers who fought and resisted an army of 12,000 Paraguayan soldiers, as well as hunger, thirst, and lack of medicine.
El director boliviano Tonchy Antezana arroja luz sobre un capítulo desconocido de la historia latinoamericana: la batalla entre el 7 y el 29 de septiembre de 1932 entre los ejércitos boliviano y paraguayo en y alrededor de la fortaleza de Boquerón que condujo a una guerra fronteriza entre ambos países. Contada desde la perspectiva de cuatro jóvenes bolivianos de diferentes clases sociales, Antezana recrea las condiciones de los 619 soldados bolivianos que lucharon y resistieron a un ejército de 12,000 soldados paraguayos a pesar del hambre, la sed y la falta de medicinas.
Winner of the Best Picture award at this year’s Cartagena de Indias International Film Festival and set among the tin mines of Huanuni in Bolivia’s Oruro region, Kiro Russo’s impressionistic, dreamlike feature film debut centers on Elder, a perpetual screw-up who moves in with his grandmother after his father dies. His godfather, Francisco, secures a job for him in the mining company his father worked for. His co-workers know a thing or two about Francisco’s relationship with Elder’s deceased father, setting the stage for a confrontation between both son and godfather.

Caco plans on surprising his girlfriend with a marriage proposal, but instead fi nds her in bed with another man. It’s no longer a secret that Chile has been producing some of the most exciting, adventurous and daring films Latin American cinema has seen in the last decade or so. Films produced by the likes of Fernando Lavanderos, Pablo Larrain and Sebastian Lelio (whose most recent film, “A Fantastic Woman,” won two major awards at this year’s Berlinale) have been critically acclaimed by critics, festival programmers and public alike. The six films showcased here thanks to the friendship and partnership that bind the Chicago Latino Film Festival, the Consulate General of Chile in Chicago and the Cultural Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, are just but a small sample of what this dynamic community produces year round.
Ya no es un secreto que Chile está produciendo algunas de las películas más electrizantes, atrevidas y temerarias del cine latinoamericano de la última década. Las películas producidas por Fernando Lavanderos, Pablo Larraín y Sebastián Lelio (cuya obra más reciente, “Una mujer fantástica”, ganó dos importantes premios en la Berlinale este año) han sido igualmente aclamadas por críticos, programadores de festivales y público en general. Las seis películas presentadas aquí, gracias a la alianza que unen al Festival de Cine Latino de Chicago, el Consulado General de Chile en Chicago y la División Cultural del Ministerio de Relaciones, son sólo una pequeña muestra de lo que esta comunidad dinámica produce todo el año.
Gero is a local politician dazzled by the chance to become state governor. But when his wife Lucia slaps an influential politician at a party after he takes some liberties with her and the photo lands on the front pages, Gero, following the advice of his closest associate, decides to send her to a mental asylum. Lucia flees to Rio de Janeiro where she runs into childhood sweetheart Raposo and soon the embers of that old romance are rekindled. Fearing another political scandal, Gero goes after Lucia hoping to win her back.

Using as a backdrop the ongoing violent conflict between Chile’s indigenous Mapuche communities and the forces who want to strip them of their lands, Claudia Huaiquimilla’s urgent and wrenching first feature-length film focuses on the burgeoning friendship between two teenagers. Rebellious Tano is sent to the small mountain community of Wallmapu under the care of his father after he is arrested for his participation in a violent robbery. There he befriends Cheo, a young Mapuche who is bullied at school. Their friendship deepens as the community around them explodes after the death of an influential Mapuche leader.
Para su primer largometraje, la realizadora Claudia Huaiquimilla usa como trasfondo el continuo conflicto entre las comunidades mapuches de Chile y las fuerzas que quieren desalojarlas de sus tierras para narrar esta historia sobre la amistad entre dos adolescentes. Tano es enviado a la pequeña comunidad montañosa de Wallmapu bajo el cuidado de su padre tras ser arrestado por su participación en un robo violento. Allí se hace amigo de Cheo, un joven Mapuche víctima de hostigamiento en la escuela. Su amistad crece a la vez que la comunidad a su alrededor entra en punto de ebullición tras la muerte de un influyente líder mapuche.
Tomas is spending his last weekend in Chile with his family in their cramped suburban house before travelling to London to study medicine. His young sister Catalina is pregnant, his mother suffers from severe back pain, and his father is participating in a labor strike. What should have been a happy day for the whole family is ruined when a problem with the plumbing floods parts of the house and the stink caused by it pushes this close-knit family to the brink. This claustrophobic debut paints a spot-on microscopic portrait of contemporary Chilean society.
Tomás pasa su último fin de semana en Chile con su familia en su apretada casa suburbana antes de viajar a Londres para estudiar medicina. Su joven hermana Catalina está embarazada, su madre sufre de severos dolores de espalda y su padre participa en una huelga laboral. Lo que pudo haber sido una ocasión feliz se arruina cuando un problema con la plomería inunda partes de la casa y el hedor causado por las aguas empuja a esta familia al borde de un precipicio. Vincent del Toro is a young entrepreneur who took a gamble by opening a company that specializes in refurbishing vintage cars and converting them into electric ones in sunny California. A problem with the licensing bureau places Vincent’s new business in jeopardy. He returns home to Michigan in search of a solution and, with an old friend, begins to grow marijuana at his father Juan Pablo’s (Sergio Hernandez, “Gloria”) farm. What seemed like a good idea at the time turns into a nightmare; as he sinks deeper into a life of crime, Vincent will have to rely on his predatory instincts to survive.

Andrés Centeno is stuck in an existential rut. He works long night shifts in a factory and complements his income by occasionally playing different roles as a test subject for a local medical school. He has trouble sleeping and enjoys a rather satisfactory sexual relationship with actress Karina. How far can you go before you hit rock bottom? Andres will find out after he almost screws up medical student Dominga’s chances of graduating and unearthing a box of photos, VHS tapes and other memorabilia from his mother’s house.

Fernando Lavanderos follows-up his critically acclaimed “Things the Way They Are” with this quirky road movie where the people you meet along the way are far more important than the trip itself. Esteban hops onto his car and drives north, towards the Chile-Bolivia border, in pursuit of his girlfriend Isabel who one day up and left him for no reason. His only road map: a tablet she left behind where she downloaded footage of her travels. Along the way, Esteban meets the same people Isabel met in past trips, her footage marking a sharp contrast with Esteban’s own experience.

Shot in the mountainous town of Neltume at the south of Chile, Tenorio’s feature debut taps into the region’s history –Neltume was the focus of a guerrilla movement against the Pinochet regime in the 70s and early 80s– to tell the spine-chilling story of the disappearance of seven women in the last decade and a half. Romance writer Claudia receives news that her boyfriend, a horror novelist, has committed suicide. Upon arriving in Neltume, she comes face to face with the town’s violent history when she joins police detective Benno’s investigation of the disappearances and her boyfriend’s possible involvement.

Victor Gaviria (“Rodrigo D: No Futuro”), delivers another stark, relentless portrait of life in Medellin, made all the more realistic by his use of non-professional actors. Amparo is a teenage girl who, after some trouble in a boarding school, seeks refuge in her sister’s house in a marginal neighborhood and is kidnapped and forced into marriage by the town’s bully, her cousin Libardo. Pregnant with his child, Amparo discovers that Libardo has been keeping another woman locked up in his ranch and decides that enough is enough. Winner of the Best Director award at last year’s International Festival of New Latin American Cinema in Havana.

Amparo es una adolescente que, tras encontrar refugio en la casa de su hermana en un barrio marginal a raíz de unos problemas en el internado, es secuestrada y obligada a casarse con el bravucón del barrio, Libardo. Embarazada con su hijo, Amparo descubre que Libardo mantiene a otra mujer prisionera en su rancho y decide ponerle un basta a tanto abuso. Love is not a many-splendored thing in this anthology set in Medellin on Mother’s Day. Colombian director Harold Trompetero joins forces once again with acclaimed actor John Leguizamo in this tough, documentary-like drama shot in a dilapidated prison in Facatativa (about 18 miles outside of Bogota) with former members of the guerrillas and paramilitaries as extras. Imprisoned for committing a “crime of passion,” Misael (Leguizamo) lands in an overcrowded jail where he is abused and humiliated by guards and fellow prisoners. His family won’t even visit him. He only finds solace in the prison’s dog, Sarna.

Product of a six-month artistic residency where rural youngsters from Azuay -a province in the south of the Ecuadorian Andes- produced their fi rst feature film based on the stories of their elders, “Here and There” centers on 22-year old Ismael who is raising funds to travel to the United States. Infl uenced by Richard Linklater’s “Before Trilogy,” “One Last Afternoon” delivers a sympathetic portrait of a couple still trying to come to terms with their past and the price they paid for their activism.

Giovanni travels from Lima to the Iquitos jungle in search of his missing girlfriend Milena, an environmentalist and teacher, one of many to have mysteriously disappeared from the area. The locals attribute the disappearances to a mythical figure. Convinced that there’s more to these disappearances than meets the eye, Giovanni, with the help of a local police captain and a radio journalist, begins to track down her whereabouts and uncovers a vast conspiracy. Fernandez-Moris (who’s also the executive producer of “Maligno”) delivers an immersive, atmospheric thriller where the jungle becomes a character.

Politics are considered a national sport in Puerto Rico. So, unavoidably, 2016 saw the release of not one but two political satires in the island. And we have them both! “I Am a Politician” follows Carlos, a former filmmaker recently released from jail, who with the help of cellmate Cangry, decides to run for governor of the island. But running for one party won’t be enough, so he approaches each of the island’s three main parties, pitching his candidacy to the highest bidder. This hilarious satire explores the most ridiculous and outrageous aspects of Puerto Rican politics.

The members of a commune, dressed in white and holding torches, throw themselves into the sea from a cliff in the Canary Islands. The police suspect that one of them could have been Gabriel’s sister Cordelia, whom he hasn’t seen in several years. Gabriel arrives to help with the police investigation. But as he and Helena, Cordelia’s best friend, begin to unearth the motives that led the commune to commit mass suicide, Gabriel begins to question his own relationship to his sister, wondering whether he pushed her away from him and into the arms of a cult.

2007: the housing bubble has already burst in Spain, a full year before it wreaks havoc in the rest of the world. Families are being evicted left and right, their self-esteem in tatters. Sonia, her husband, and their 10-year-old daughter are one of those families, forced to live in their parents’ apartment. They are not the only victims, however. The evictions are leaving a deep mark on the police officials ordered to enact them and on the one honest bank employee who feels guilty about the whole mess. Fourteen-year-old Miguel (Javier Mendo) has been evading the persistent pursuit of social services agents since he served time at a juvenile detention center. Santiago wakes up naked and beaten in the middle of a desert. A drought has devastated his family farm. When Santiago returns, he is welcomed by his father Ernesto at gunpoint while the family dog stands in between. Ernesto shoots the dog believing him to be infected by whatever has ailed the farm animals; the dog comes back from the grave to haunt a family that is slowly descending into madness. Ledesma’s opera prima offers a phantasmagoric, surreal spin to the old prodigal son fable.

Using classic tangos and boleros as an emotional counterpoint, “The Moderns” is a sharp and witty look at the circumstances that drive us to fall in and out of love.

Shot in the dilapidated house that used to belong to Thielen Armand’s great-grandparents and now inhabited by their lifelong maid and grandson (playing themselves in the fi lm), this poetic fusion of fact and fiction presents a human face to the economic crisis that’s tearing Venezuela apart. When José, a young handyman who spends a good portion of his days standing in long lines for food and medicine, learns that the house will be demolished, he begins a search for a cursed treasure that, legend has it, is buried somewhere in the house. That treasure could very well save him and his family from living in one of Caracas’ slums.
