Who needs ELF-aware TE?Teachers interested in:•learning more about ELF, WE, global English phenomenon•experimenting with alternative perspectives to EFL (in an increasingly “post-EFL” world)•promoting genuine intercultural competence in their learners

“ELF-aware teacher education” involves:
• informing Ts about the ELF construct and research
• helping Ts in different contexts to take ownership of ELF
• prompting Ts to develop/teach/evaluate appropriate successful ELF-aware lessons for their learners

Obstacles to ELF-aware TE
• EFL mentality• High-stakes examinations mentality• Course-book centred mentality• Own personal deeply held convictions about what should be taught to EFL learners
• Ts perceiving their roles in the classroom as custodians of Standard English

Profiling the ELF-TEd Project
• Sep 2012 – Jun 2017• 150+ pre- and in-service teachers involved
• Primary, secondary, tertiary, ESP contexts
• 2 training phases—teachers:a. read selected papers, answer reflective
questions on themb. design, teach, self-/peer- evaluate original
lessons/activities• Flexible syllabus
