Great Plains Athletic Conference Football Media Day 2011
2011 GPAC Preview by B. Lynn Fouts (Reprinted from NAIA Preview – The Magazine and the Victory Sports Network)
The face of college football has been rapidly changing the past 18 months. Some schools moved to new
conferences, others re-classified and still others shuttered their
doors. The Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) has not
been immune to these symptoms of the industry, but yet it is
poised for what might quite possibly be its most exciting, and
certainly most unpredictable season. The difference between
first and worst might not have been this close since the
inaugural year. Therefore, change will be the theme for the
GPAC’s twelfth season this fall. Change in scheduling as each
of the ten schools step out of the league at least once. Change in coaching as Hastings promotes Tony
Harper to the top spot and 35% of the league’s coordinators are new this fall. But maybe the most
important change of all is a guaranteed new conference champ, the first to wear the crown in six years.
Yes, life after Sioux Falls will be just fine.
When the NAIA’s Top 25 Spring Poll came out in April, three teams were ranked with aspirations to be the
new kings of the hill. #5 Morningside, #14 Northwestern and #17 Midland all have key returners and
sufficient talent to state their case for grabbing the title. Several others have designs to make up for
disappointing seasons last fall and emerge as dark-horses in 2011. And still others have the ability to trip
up the favorites on any given Saturday.
Morningside, after a sixth straight run to the quarterfinals, is the choice of many to be the heir apparent.
The Mustangs return most of their skill people and an offensive line that has the potential to be one of their
better ones. Quarterback Jordan Jacupke took over the starter’s role midway through 2010 and enters his
sophomore season with seniors at running back in Mike McNulty and at wide receive in Joel Nixon. The
names to remember on the O-line are Cole Albright, Tyler Winter and Tim Herman. All push 300 and
could be joined by a 4th
starter if health concerns are addressed. On defense, all-league defensive end John
Kirwan returns with linebacker Marshall Barney and all four secondary starters. Coach Steve Ryan has
gone 60-13 in the past 6 campaigns and shows no signs of letting up.
In Orange City, Coach Kyle Achterhoff has been placing his own touch on the proud tradition of Red
Raider football, going 15-5 in his first two years. Only the third coach at Northwestern in the past 43
seasons, he also has a group of players talented enough to grab the golden GPAC ring. Sophomore Jayme
Rozeboom returns at quarterback and has an all-league running back in workhorse Brandon Smith who
shared time with the departed Taylor Malm last fall when both ran for over a thousand yards. Tyler Walker
and Brice Byker look to be the wide receiver targets. Paul Lundgren anchors the middle of a strong
defense at 300 lb. Junior Aaron Jansen leads a big, fast array of linebackers. The motivation that an 8-2
mark wasn’t good enough in 2010 should help this group in seeking the Raiders first post season berth
since 2006. They’ve been close ever since, going 30-10 over the past 4 years with only one of those losses
to an unranked team.
Current GPAC Coach of the Year, Casey Thiele, has moved Midland into the discussion for conference
title contenders. He has his Warriors ready to take that next step with just a couple tweaks necessary. 3-
year quarterback starter John Faulkner is gone along with three senior wide outs. A deep stable of running
backs led by Khalid Waters and Derrick Middleton plus a solid offensive line will help whoever wins the
battle under center. The defense has so much depth that they’ve lent DB Ronnie McLaughlin to the offense
at wide receiver. Defensive tackle Jonathan Bos and safeties Branden Brown and Bryce Mallett will lead a
squad that finished 6th
in scoring and 11th
in total defense in the NAIA last fall. With momentum on their
side and games with Morningside and Northwestern in Fremont, the Warriors have reason to think about
the post season for the first time in 17 years.

Two schools who sit just outside the favorite’s category are Dakota Wesleyan and Hastings. Both closed
out 2010 at 5-5 and have tons of potential going into the new season.
DWU brings another sophomore quarterback to the table, Jonathan
Banes, and an all-league runner, Josh Endres. Since they’ll operate
behind an experienced o-line that has four starters back, scoring points
won’t be a problem for the Tigers. The key in Mitchell will be
replacing most of the starters on defense. Defensive ends Zach Reker
and Aaron Rolen return to pressure offenses while the newcomers
meld. The Broncos begin the Tony Harper era with question marks at
quarterback and in the offensive line. If the new faces can adequately
replace their predecessors, Dalton Sealey may become the next great
running back in Hastings. On defense, the line needs to be rebuilt, but
strength at the linebacker position returns with Indiana Jones and Alek
Diffendaffer. An emphasis on increasing team speed should help return the turnover margin closer to the
2009 squad; the GPAC’s top-ranked takeaway unit. Both DWU and Hastings have shots at slipping into
the league’s top three and NAIA rankings.
Lurking just beyond the shadow of the first division are five teams itching to get into the sunlight of a
winning season. Concordia has advanced slowly but steadily under Vance Winter’s tutelage and in his
third year at the helm, the Bulldogs are emerging from the under construction category. Nine starters back
on offense gives optimism that more scoring is on the way. The defense was improved in 2010 and more is
expected this season behind seniors linebacker Jerrod Fleming and safety Ben Klein. The bite might be
more than the bark at Bulldog Stadium this autumn.
It had been more than a decade since Nebraska Wesleyan finished below .500 (4-6 in 2010). The wait to
get back over that magic number shouldn’t take nearly as long. Coach Brian Keller welcomes back
possibly his deepest offensive line in years with experience from tackle-to-tackle. A returning starter at
quarterback, Nate Hauptman, and a slew of running backs will help take some pressure off the defense that
needs some repairs due to graduation. New defensive coordinator Kevin Crume has been on staff for years
and is familiar with the roster. If the defense returns to Prairie Wolves’ standards, NWU could well be a
handful to deal with.
Coach Matt Franzen begins his fifth year at Doane with veteran leadership on both sides of the ball.
Quarterback Anthony Dunn (2nd
team GPAC) will have an experienced line in front of him, (UNK transfer
Joe Vetrovsky bears watching), and another all-league performer at wide receiver in Jeremiah Saffold. It
will be in the run game where the Tigers will show if they’re ready to make that run for a winning record.
The defense has senior leaders in linebacker Dalton Ryba and defensive end Clayton Kolling and their own
transfer of note in linebacker Jeremy Wallace.
Briar Cliff football celebrates its 10th
fall in 2011 and Coach Tom Rethman aims for that elusive winning
season in his fourth year by simply taking it one game at a time. He returns quarterback Tom Traficanti,
another of the good, young guns in the conference. Big running back Jared Williams is expected to churn
out the yardage for a ground game that has been lacking at BCU. The defense will rely on the deep front
line which returns starters Brady Summers, Marshall Ellis and Adnan Kasapovic while the back seven
develop with several new faces.
Coach John Heavner showcases his fourth edition of the Defenders with experience, (18 starters and lots of
seniors back), that he hasn’t had before. Quarterback Justin Knott and running back Josh Van Kempen
should both start for a third year while the offensive line has size and experience. The defense has
leadership in DT Bryce Kroeze, LB Todd Green and Jordan Huisman. If they can stay healthy, the
Defenders should be the most improved team in the GPAC and no longer an easy out.
