TUESDAY 8:30 AM DEVOTIONS IN INTERVIEW GROUPS GREETING Leader: Jesus is the Light of the World! People: Thanks be to God for the Light! Reader: Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the LORD guards the city, the guard keeps watch in vain. (Psalms 127:1 NRSV) (Silence) Reader: We come today confirming that God has no Theory of Everything that, once discovered, will make all things right. Our work is only effective as we look to God moment by moment, day by day, for the guidance we need. Cantor sings verse one of “Guide My Feet” alone, without music (Source: The Faith We Sing #2208) – public domain, no permission needed for reprint. People stand to sing verse 1 with music: Sing slowly, expressively, prayerfully. Reader: Once while Jesus was standing beside the lake of Gennesaret, and the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he saw two boats there at the shore of the lake; the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little way from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat. When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch." Simon answered, "Master, we have worked all night long but have caught nothing. Yet if you say so, I will let down the nets." When they had done this, they caught so many fish that their nets were beginning to break. So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both boats, so that they began to sink. (Luke 5:1-7 NRSV) (Silence, people seated) People Sing: “Guide My Feet,” verse 5 Search my heart while I run this race. Search my heart while I run this race, Search my heart while I run this race, for I don’t want to run this race in vain. UNISON PRAYER: Merciful God, we strain to hear your direction for this day. As we lean forward to listen, we also struggle with the weight of the cares we brought with us. We bring those cares to you this morning, knowing that you are both compassionate and powerful. (Silence)

People Sing: “Guide My Feet,” Verse 2 Hold my hand while I run this race, Hold my hand while I run this race, Hold my hand while I run this race, for I don’t want to run this race in vain.

With confidence as people of God, together let us pray the prayer that Jesus taught his disciples: THE LORD’S PRAYER People Sing: “Guide My Feet,” Verse 3 Stand by me while I run this race. Stand by me while I run this race. Stand by me while I run this race, for I don’t want to run this race in vain. Reader: Jesus said, "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor." (Luke 4:18-19 NRSV) UNISON PRAYER Empowering God, Set us aside this day for good news, for liberating work, for ministries that reveal your goodness to the entire world. Anoint us and let the acceptable year of your favor be made known! People Sing: “Guide My Feet,” Verses 4 & 6 I’m your child while I run this race. I’m your child while I run this race. I’m your child while I run this race, for I don’t want to run this race in vain. Guide my feet while I run this race. Guide my feet while I run this race. Guide my feet while I run this race, for I don’t want to run this race in vain. BENEDICTION May the glory of God’s grace shine upon us, May the peace of God rest upon us. As we set our hands and our hearts to the work that lies before us. Amen.

A SERVICE OF REMEMBRANCE, CELEBRATION AND HOLY COMMUNION

*PROCESSIONAL HYMN The people stand as able. Give Thanks for Life

*CALL TO WORSHIP1: The Drama of Creation Rev. Winifred Blagmond, Baltimore-Washington The people standing as able.

In the beginning, God made the world:

(Women): Made it and mothered it, (Men): Shaped it and fathered it;

(Women): Filled it with seed and with signs of fertility, (Men): Filled it with life and with song and variety.

All that is green, blue, deep and growing, God’s is the hand that created you.

All that is tender, firm, fragrant and curious, God’s is the hand that created you. All that crawls, flies, swims, walks or is motionless,

God’s is the hand that created you. All that speaks, sings, cries, laughs or keeps silence,

God’s is the hand that created you. All that suffers, lacks, limps or longs for an end,

God’s is the hand that created you. The world belongs to God,

The Earth and all its people. The people are seated.

*HYMN Amazing Grace led by band Source: United Methodist Hymnal #378 – words in the public domain

The people stand as able. Amazing Grace! How sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me!

I once was lost, but now am found; was blind, but now I see.

‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, and grace my fears relieved;

how precious did that grace appear the hour I first believed.

Through many dangers, toils, and snares, I have already come; ‘tis grace hath brought me safe thus far, and grace will lead me home.

Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail, and mortal life shall cease,

I shall possess, within the veil, a life of joy and peace.

OFFERING The offering today is for Mission Central Miracle Month. Checks may be made payable to NEJ. OFFERTORY BAND THE DRAMA OF THE LORD’S TABLE COMMUNION SERVICE: The Drama of Incarnation Mario Reto, Western New York When the time was right, God sent the Son.

(Women): Sent him and suckled him, (Men): Reared him and risked him; (Women): Filled him with laughter and tears and compassion,

(Men): Filled him with anger and love and devotion, Unwelcomed child, refugee and runaway,

Christ is God’s own son. Skilled carpenter and homeless wayfarer,

Christ is God’s own son. Feeder and teacher, healer and antagonist,

Christ is God’s own son. Lover of the unlovable, toucher of the untouchable, forgiver of the unforgivable,

Christ is God’s own son. Loved by the least, feared by the leaders; befriended by the weak, despised by the strong; deserted by his listeners, denied by his friends; bone of our bone, flesh of our flesh, writing heaven’s pardon over earth’s mistakes,

Christ is God’s own son. The Word became flesh,

He lived among us; he was one of us. AFFIRMATION OF FAITH: The Drama of Salvation Madeleine Horrell, North Central New York

When the world could wait no longer, (Women): The carpenters took up their tools,

(Men): They made a cross for God’s own son, (Women): Fashioned from wood and skill of human hands.

(Men): Fashioned from hate and will of human minds. He was a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.

For us he grieved. He was summoned to the judgment hall, an enemy of the state,

a danger to religion, By us he was judged.

He was lashed with tongues and scourged with thongs. By his stripes we are healed.

He was nailed to the cross by human hands, Bone of our bone, flesh of our flesh.

He died, declaring God’s forgiveness. He rose on the third day, transforming death. He ascended into heaven, that he might be everywhere on earth. He sent the Holy Spirit as the seal of his intention. He sets before us bread and wine, and invites us to his table. This is the place where we are made well again.

And all will be made well. For God sent the Son into the world not to condemn the world,

But that the world through him might be saved. THE STORY OF THE LAST SUPPER - BLESSING AND SHARING THE BREAD AND CUP Bishop Fisher Blessed is our brother Jesus, who walks with us the road of our world’s suffering. And who is known to us in the breaking of bread.

On the night of his arrest Jesus took bread and having blessed it, he broke the bread and gave it to his

disciples, saying, “This is my body, given to you.” In the same way he took the cup and having given thanks for it he poured it out and gave the cup to

his disciples, saying, “This cup is the new relationship with God, sealed with my blood. Take this and share it. I shall drink with you next in the coming Kingdom of God.”

Let us pray: Loving God, through your goodness we have this bread and cup to offer, which earth has given and

human hands have made. May we know your presence in the sharing of this bread, so that we may know your touch in all bread, all matter.

We celebrate the life that Jesus has shared among his community through the centuries, and shares with us now. Made one in Christ and one with each other, we offer these gifts and with them ourselves, a single, holy, living sacrifice.

Hear us, O Christ, and breathe your Spirit upon us and upon these gifts of bread and juice. May they become for us your body, vibrant with your life, healing, renewing and making us whole. May we be changed again into you, bone of your bone, and flesh of your flesh, loving and caring in the world. Amen

Here is Christ coming to us We who are many, and come from many places, are one in Christ: The gifts of God for the people of God.

FEASTING AT THE TABLE The band will lead us in singing at the Table.

THE DRAMA OF CELEBRATION Rev. Winifred Blagmond, Baltimore-Washington In the end as in the beginning, God is God:

(Women): Loved by us, wanted by us, (Men): Praised by us, served by us;

(Women): Filling the folk with the gifts of the Spirit, (Men): Making them whole for the good of the earth.

For bread and wine, this place and this time, Thanks be to God.

For the peace we are promised which the world won’t destroy, Thanks be to God.

For the hope of heaven on earth and the final song of joy, Thanks be to God.

WEDNESDAY: 1:15PM - CAUGHT UP IN THE SPIRIT: MEET ME AT THE WELL HYMN “Holy River Never Failing” LED BY BAND

Tune: “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” Words: Copyright 1999 Bret Hesla 3520—20th Ave. South, Minneapolis, MN 55407 ([email protected])

Permission and words are available from the composer. GOSPEL READING FROM JOHN 4 LED BY SAFIYAH (John 4:4-15) But he had to go through Samaria. So he came to a Samaritan city called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob's well was there, and Jesus, tired out by his journey, was sitting by the well. It was about noon. A Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, "Give me a drink." (His disciples had gone to the city to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to him, "How is it that you, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samaria?" (Jews do not share things in common with Samaritans.) Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, 'Give me a drink,' you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water." The woman said to him, "Sir, you have no bucket, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? Are you greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us the well, and with his sons and his flocks drank from it?" Jesus said to her, "Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty. The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life." The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water, so that I may never be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water." 2008 NEJ RETIREMENT RECOGNITION Wednesday, July 16, 2008 GATHERING GREETING: L: Trust in the Lord and do good. P: May the Lord give strength to the people! L: O taste and see that the Lord is good! P: God is our refuge and strength. HYMN OF PRAISE: UNITED Methodist Hymnal 593 Here I Am, Lord OPENING PRAYER Bishop William Boyd Grove SCRIPTURE LESSONS: Bishop Marcus Matthews Epistle Lesson 2 Timothy 4:1-8 Gospel Lesson John 21:15-19 HYMN: United Methodist Hymnal 584 Lord, You Give the Great Commission A LITANY OF RECOGNITION AND TRANSITION Mr. Ernest Swiggett

A Litany of Recognition and Transition

When a person is baptized in our churches, we are reminded that through the Sacrament of Baptism we are initiated into Christ’s holy church. We are incorporated into God’s mighty acts of salvation and given new birth through water and the spirit/ All this is God’s gift, offered to us without price. Praise God who grants us daily bread and invites us to feed the sheep! When a baptized Christian is received into the membership of a local congregation, we renew our commitment that as members of the United Methodist Church, we will faithfully participate in the ministries of the congregation by our prayers, our presence, our gifts, and our service. Praise God who grants us daily bread and invites us to feed the sheep! We give thanks to God for those among us who, when they were ordained, took authority as an elder in the Church to preach the Word of God, and to administer the Holy Sacraments. Praise God who grants us daily bread and invites us to feed the sheep! The Northeastern Jurisdiction from time to time elects bishops. The office of bishop…exists in the United Methodist Church as a particular ministry. Bishops are elected…from the group of elders who are ordained to be ministers of Word, Sacrament, and Order and thereby participate in the ministry of Christ, in sharing a royal priesthood which has apostolic roots. [Book of Worship, p.698] Praise God who grants us daily bread and invites us to feed the sheep!

The Northeastern Jurisdiction laity and clergy delegates elected Bishop Violet Fisher and Bishop Susan Morrison. We remember the words of St. Augustine, who said, believe me, brothers and sisters, if what I am for you frightens me, what I am with you reassures me. For you I am the bishop; with you I am a Christian. Praise God who grants us daily bread and invites us to feed the sheep. We give thanks to God for our bishops who are retiring from active service to the church. We pray that Almighty God will go with you during your years of retirement and grant you health and strength for the continuing journey of faith. Amen! PERSONAL WITNESS Bishop Violet Fisher

(NOT TO BE PROJECTED ON SCREEN)

DRAMATIZATION: “Moving In” Narrator: How many of you are football fans? Did you know that there are 20 yards in an in-zone? That’s how far the street is between our church and a Section-8 apartment building, known as 2819 Matthew Terrace. It might as well have been 20 miles from the church, because we could not reach the people in 2819. Neither residents nor church members wanted to cross the street. Every since the building was erected, in1973, residents have had no use for the church, and many church members, it seems, have had no use for them. During the late 1980s, drugs moved into our neighborhood and took up residence in the apartment building. Several community groups met in our church, even the neighborhood block club, intent on ridding the community of drugs, but beyond that, there was little affiliation. Members were told people did not think the church would welcome them, or that they had visited once or twice and found the service boring. Besides, they had better things to do. Once it looked like a summer camp and the Saturday church school would prove the church friendly. Several did become a part of the church, especially children and youth. I was one of them. At least once a month, someone would break into the church. One would think, that finding nothing of street value people wouldn’t bother to keep breaking in. After a while, we started to find crack vials and used condoms discarded in the window ceils of our fenced in parking lot. How they got there we’d never know. Shots would ring out periodically. The young people who lived in the neighborhood felt unsafe. What was the Body of Christ to do? The head of the church, Christ Jesus, spoke to several collective spirits one night during an Advent Bible study. Let’s listen in. ________________________________ Margaret: (Reading from the Message, John 1: 14a) Starting at John 1: 14, “The Word became flesh and blood, and moved into the neighborhood….”(pauses and starts to ponder). Rev. Latrice: Margaret finish the verse. Margaret: No way. I’m stopping here. All this time we’ve been trying to find ways to make a difference in this community, and nothing has been completely successful. What if we moved into 2819 and took up residence? We move into the neighborhood, just like Jesus moved to earth. Otis: Uh, Margaret, we are already in the neighborhood. Margaret: Well, Otis, we might as well not be, as far as folk around here are concerned. They think we’re so holy that we’re no earthly good? Otis: (Looking at Margaret with one eyebrow raised) Wonder how they got that impression? Have you stopped smoking yet?

Margaret: Oh never you mind. And “yes” for your information, since I got the patch I haven’t smoked for weeks now. But back to what I was saying. Why don’t we, as the children of God move into that 2819?

Otis: Who? Me? I’m not planning to move anywhere. Beside, what would I do there if I move? Margaret: You don’t have to do anything…not in the building, at least. You’re the realtor, right? Just get us in. I could drop in frequently and do advocacy and organizing. I’ll give ‘em “what for” at city hall.

2008 NEJ JURISDICTIONAL CONFERENCE – WORSHIP SCRIPT

17

Otis: Yeah, you’ve had lots of practice doing that. So gang, tell me what exactly, you will be doing once you move in? Darcy: I’ll be willing to actually move in. After all, many of my grandchildren’s friends live there, and so did my children’s friends. I know a lot of the people from school events and the block association. My grown children who live with me can take care of my home. I know I can get several others to come in shifts and help. There’s nothing like the smell of food seeping from under the front door to get people in the apartment! Torrance: You know I am a retired math teacher. I’d be willing to help the young people with homework, and whatever else is useful. My wife teaches Computer Science at the junior college. I know she would help. Pastor, what do you think about all this? Pastor Latrice: Consider me the pastor-in-residence. I could do a noontime Bible study for seniors and counsel teens and anyone else who needed it. Margaret: Seems we are all of one accord, then. Torrance: Now we only have to figure out how to get the church to go for this. Pastor Latrice: Don’t worry about a thing. Just let me handle it. Narrator: Miracle of miracles, all the groups in the church who needed to buy into this proposal did! It took us a year and a half of writing grants, and building partnerships. We used the endowment income designated for mission as seed money for grants, secured an apartment, moved in, and have been there for going on four years. It has made a difference not only the residence of 2819 Matthew Terrace, but in the entire community.

I live at 2819. Ms. Darcy became a second mom to me. I joined Margaret and her crews as we put enough pressure on city hall until there are no more drugs, least not in this neighborhood. I feel God calling me to be a civil rights’ attorney. Youth like me now have purpose; the older people now have community; and parents now have partners.

United with an interfaith group, our church even worked with the city to convert three nearby vacant lots into a park. Where there was once no hope, there is now great joy, because the Body of Christ moved into the neighborhood, even if it was only a move across the street. The church did as Jesus commanded it in Matthew 28: 19: “Go out and train everyone you meet, far and near, in this way of life, marking them by baptism in the three-fold name: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Then instruct them in the practice of all I have commanded you.”

(NRSV) Leader: Give us, O Lord, an eye for injustice—for it is only when are able to recognize injustice and feel its awful sting that we will be moved to make things right.

People: Give us, O Lord, a tender heart—sometimes we are too hardhearted to recognize when we have been uncaring, unfeeling, or unkind.

Leader: Give us, O Lord, the ability to view life from the dust—all our lives we have been taught to make others proud, to be proud of ourselves, to hold our heads high, all the while missing the virtues of being poor in spirit.

All: Teach us, dear Lord, to do justice, love kindness, and to walk humbly with you. Amen.

I waited patiently for the Lord, who inclined to me and heard my cry.

2008 NEJ JURISDICTIONAL CONFERENCE – WORSHIP SCRIPT

The Lord drew me up from the desolate pit, out of the miry bog, set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure.

The Lord put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and be in awe, and put their trust in the Lord.

Grace alone which God supplies, strength unknown God will provide.

Christ in us our Cornerstone; we will go forth in grace alone.

Blessed are those who make the Lord their trust, who do not turn to the proud. to those who go astray after false gods!

O Lord my God, you have multiplied your wondrous deeds and your thoughts toward us; none can compare with you!

Were I to proclaim and tell of them, they would be more than can be numbered. Sacrifice and offering you do not desire; but you have given me an open ear. Burnt offering and sin offering you have not required. Then I said, “Lo, I come; in the roll of the book it is written of me; I delight to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart.”

Grace alone which God supplies, strength unknown God will provide.

Christ in us our Cornerstone; we will go forth in grace alone.

I have told the glad news of deliverance in the great congregation; lo, I have not restrained my lips, as you know, O Lord.

I have not hid your saving help within my heart, I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation; I have not concealed your steadfast love and faithfulness from the great congregation. O Lord, do not withhold your mercy from me, let your steadfast love and faithfulness ever preserve me!

Grace alone which God supplies, strength unknown God will provide.

Christ in us our Cornerstone; we will go forth in grace alone.

We believe in God the Father, infinite in wisdom, power, and love, whose mercy is over all his works, and whose will is ever directed to his children’s good.

We believe in Jesus Christ, Son of God and Son of man, the gift of the Father’s unfailing grace,

the ground of our hope, and the promise of our deliverance from sin and death. We believe in the Holy Spirit as the divine presence in our lives,

whereby we are kept in perpetual remembrance of the truth of Christ, and find strength and help in time of need. We believe that this faith should manifest itself in the service of love

as set forth in the example of our blessed Lord, to the end that the kingdom of God may come upon the earth. Amen.

THE RITE OF CONSECRATION

EXAMINATION The people are seated. The bishop-elect stands facing the presiding bishop. The bishop examines the bishop-elect: My brother/sister, you are to be consecrated bishop in the church of God. All Christian ministry is Christ’s ministry of reconciling love. All baptized Christians are called to share this ministry of service in the world, to the glory of God and for the redemption of the human family. From among the baptized some are called by God and set apart by the church to serve God’s people. As bishop and pastor, will you, in cooperation with diaconal ministers,

commissioned ministers, deacons and elders, encourage and support all baptized people in their gifts and ministries, pray for them without ceasing, proclaim and interpret to them the gospel of Christ, and celebrate with them the Sacraments of our redemption? I will, in the name of Christ, the Shepherd and Bishop of our souls. Will you share with other bishops in the supervision of the whole church; support the elders and take counsel with them; guide and strengthen the commissioned ministers, diaconal ministers and deacons, and all others who minister in the church; and ordain, consecrate, and send others to minister in Christ’s name? All this I will do, by the grace given me. May the God who has given you the will to do these things give you grace to perform them, that the work begun in you may be brought to perfection. Amen. LAYING ON OF HANDS AND PRAYER The presiding bishop calls the people to prayer: As Name of bishop-elect is consecrated bishop in the church, let us invoke the Holy Spirit on his/her behalf and pray for him/her in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. The bishop-elect kneels. The people pray for him/her in silence. HYMN Come, Holy Ghost, Our Souls Inspire Soloist

(The congregation will join the soloist on the last verse) Teach us to know the Creator, Son, and Thee, of both to be but One,

that through the ages all along this may be our endless song. Praise to thy eternal merit, Creator, Christ, and Holy Spirit. Amen.

PRAYER OF CONSECRATION

The other bishops participating join the presiding bishop. The presiding bishop now extends hands over the kneeling bishop-elect and begins the prayer of consecration: God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, giver of mercies and source of all comfort, dwelling on high but having regard for the lowly, knowing all things before they come pass: we give you thanks that from the beginning you have gathered and prepared a people to be heirs of the covenant of Abraham and Sarah, and have raised up prophets, rulers, and priests, never leaving your temple without a ministry. We praise you also that from the creation you have graciously accepted the service of those whom you have chosen. Bishops and others with Episcopal responsibilities from other communions may be invited to join the presiding bishop to lay on hands. Family members and friends may be invited to stand where they are for silent prayer during the laying on of hands for the bishop-elect. The presiding bishop now lays both hands on the head of the bishop-elect. The other bishops of the college follow, each in turn laying hands on and offering prayer for the newly consecrated bishop. Almighty God, pour upon Name the Holy Spirit, for the ministry of a bishop in Christ’s holy church. Amen. When hands have been laid upon the bishop-elect, the presiding bishop, with both hands extended over her/him, continues to pray: Almighty God, Fill the heart of this your servant whom you have chosen to be bishop with such love of you and of all the people that s/he may feed and tend the flock of Christ, serve in the ministry of reconciliation, and supervise and support the life and work of the church. In all things may s/he present before you the acceptable offering of a pure, gentle, and holy life; through Jesus Christ your servant, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and power and glory, now and forever. Amen. Immediately the new bishop places hands on a Bible as a bishop says: Name, receive the Holy Scriptures. Feed the flock of Christ, defend them in Christ’s truth, and be a faithful steward of Christ’s Word and Sacraments. After the new bishop has received a Bible, the presiding bishop says to her/him: Reflect upon the contents of this Book. Give attention to reading, exhortation, and teaching. Be to the people of God a prophetic voice and a courageous leader. Be to the flock of Christ a shepherd; support the weak, heal the sick, bind up the broken, restore the outcast, seek the lost, relieve the oppressed. Faithfully administer discipline, but do not forget mercy,

that when the Chief Shepherd shall appear you may receive the never-fading crown of glory. Amen. Immediately the new bishop is given a chalice as a bishop says: Name, receive the Cup of Forgiveness; extend Christ’s table. Amen.

OFFERING OF TABLE GIFTS

OFFERTORY ANTHEM The new bishop remains to celebrate communion. All other bishops are seated.

THANKSGIVING AND COMMUNION

TAKING THE BREAD AND CUP The new bishop prepares the table for the Lord’s Supper.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

The new bishop, standing behind the Lord’s Table, facing the people from this time through Breaking the Bread, begins the prayer: The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. The bishop may lift hands and keep them raised. We lift them up to the Lord our God. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty (Almighty God), Creator of heaven and earth. You built your church on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, and instituted a holy ministry so that your prophetic and apostolic Word might be heard in the church and in the world until the end of time. And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven we praise your name and join their unending hymn singing: The bishop may lower hands. Holy, holy, holy, Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The bishop may raise hands.

29

Holy are you, and blessed is your Son Jesus Christ. Your Spirit anointed him to preach good news to the poor, to proclaim release to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, and to announce that the time had come when you would save your people. He healed the sick, fed the hungry, and ate with sinners. By the baptism of his suffering, death, and resurrection you gave birth to your church, delivered us from slavery to sin and death, and made with us a new covenant by water and the Spirit. When the Lord Jesus, the great Shepherd of your flock, ascended, he sent forth the apostles to preach the gospel and make disciples of all nations. He promised to be with them always, and sent the Holy Spirit to lead them. The bishop may hold hands, palms down, over the bread, or touch the bread, or lift the bread. On the night in which he gave himself up for us, he took bread, gave thanks to you, broke the bread, gave it to his disciples, and said: “Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” The bishop may hold hands, palms down, over the cup, or touch the cup, or lift the cup. When the supper was over, he took the cup, gave thanks to you, gave it to his disciples, and said: “Drink from this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” The bishop may raise hands. And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ’s offering for us, as we proclaim the mystery of faith. Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again. Hosanna in the highest. The bishop may hold hands, palms down, over the bread and cup. Pour out your Holy Spirit on us gathered us, and on these gifts of bread and wine. Make them be for us the body and blood of Christ, that we may be for the world the body of Christ, redeemed by his blood. The bishop may raise hands.

By your Spirit make us one with Christ, one with each other, and one in ministry to all the world, until Christ comes in final victory and we feast at his heavenly banquet. Through your Son Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in your holy church, all honor and glory is yours, almighty God, now and for ever. Amen. Hosanna in the Highest.
