cw: psalter preview — foreword2
When you open a new book of worship resources for your church, your first question is proba-bly, “How many of these are usable in my setting?” This is probably especially true of a psalter, which typically has greater musical variety than a hymnal. Some psalm settings in a psalter look like hymns, usable in most places. Other settings look like chants with refrains, familiar to users of Christian Worship. But there are many more musical styles appearing in the new WELS psalter, and their usability probably depends on the resourcefulness of the musicians in your congregation or school.
Don’t let unfamiliarity keep you from trying out the settings no matter what they look like on the page. Many of them are available on YouTube so anyone can hear what they sound like. They can usually be accompanied by piano, organ, guitar, or steel drum, and percussion parts are printed right on the page for settings where they would be appropriate. Choirs or solo can-tors should be able to introduce any setting for a congregation.
The Psalter Preview that follows is a partial glimpse of the new psalm settings. You’ll notice a basic pattern. Each psalm is printed in its entirety and is pointed to be chanted in the current style with familiar chant tones provided. A psalm prayer is followed by both an explanation of how the Church has used that psalm through the ages and then commentary on that par-ticular psalm from a fresh translation of Martin Luther. The settings follow, printed in the best format for singers. When that format lends itself to singing in parts, those parts are printed. When the full accompaniment would only distract a singer, that accompaniment is provided in the companion Psalter Accompaniment volume. That volume often has both piano and organ accompaniments for a given psalm setting along with alternate keys and festive additions for a final verse.
Congregations that enjoy the current hymnal’s psalm style will be able to find something for every service. Congregations that prefer metrical paraphrases in a hymn format or more lyrical settings will be able to find something as well. Each of the psalms appointed in the lectionary has a setting in the new hymnal. Alternate settings are available in the electronic resources.
Martin Luther said, “No devotional book has ever appeared that is superior to the Psalms. They clearly and prophetically detail the death and resurrection of Christ. The Psalms, inspired by the Holy Spirit, are the songs of his people, his Church, with hearts laid open, praising and lamenting. They are our words of devotion.”

Psalm 1A - hymnal pew
Blessed is the one who | does not walk in step with the | wicked or stand in the way that | sinners take or sit in the company of | mockers, but whose delight is in the law | of the LORD, and who meditates on his law | day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of | water, which yields its fruit in | season and whose leaf does not | wither— whatever they do | prospers. Refrain
Not so the | wicked! They are like chaff that the wind | blows away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the | judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the | righteous. For the LORD watches over the way of the | righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to de- | struction.Glory be to the Father and | to the Son and to the Holy | Spirit,as it was in the be- | ginning, is now, and will be forever. | Amen. Ps 1B - psalter pewCW 475
5 How will they bear to stand before that judgment seat where all the saints at Christ’s right hand in full assembly meet?
6 God knows and he approves the way the righteous go, but sinners and their works shall meet a dreadful overthrow.
Already familiar to WELS congregations as #475 in CW93, this version of Psalm 1 should be usable in nearly every congregation. Isaac Watts wrote metrical paraphrases of every psalm, and our new psalter preserves or revives eleven of them for our use.

Ps 1C - psalter pewGrindal Schutz
Heinrich Schuetz was one of the first Lutheran composers to write settings for all 150 psalms, and our new psalter presents nine of them. They take some introduction, but it is worth the effort.

cw: psalter preview — psalm 8a10
WELS congregations know this refrain already from service settings of CW93. Since worshipers obviously cannot sing both the body text and the footnote text, the chanted verses in this setting made use of the footnoted NIV text.

cw: psalter preview — psalm 2320
Each of the 150 psalms in CW: Psalter begins with the full text of the psalm, followed by a prayer, devotional notes, and comments by Dr. Martin Luther.
psalm 23
102
Psalm 23
A psalm of David.
1 The Lord is my shepherd, I lack / nothing. 2 He makes me lie down in green / pastures,
he leads me beside quiet / waters, 3 he refreshes / my soul.
He guides me along the / right paths for his / name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shad-/ow of death, I will fear no / evil, for you are / with me; your rod and your staff, they / comfort me.
5 You prepare a table be-/fore me in the presence of my / enemies. You anoint my / head with oil; my cup / overflows.
6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days / of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for-/ever.
Lord Jesus Christ, Shepherd of the Church, in the waters of Baptism you have given us new life, and at your table you nourish us with the food of salvation. Lead us along safe paths through the darkness of this world, dispel the terrors of death, and bring us at last to your house, where you dwell with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
The Church sings Psalm 23 in services that honor Jesus as the Good Shepherd who lays down his life for his sheep. It is frequently sung at funerals, calling to mind the presence of the Lord as Christians go through the valley of the shadow of death. Martin Luther said, “Psalm 23 is a psalm of thanks, in which a Christian heart praises and thanks God for teaching it and leading it in right ways. Christians recognize that they are sheep, and their true Shepherd, Jesus, comforts and protects them in every need through his holy Word. With that Word, the Good Shepherd grazes us in fresh grass and at cool waters, while the table, cup, and oil are Old Testament references to divine worship.”

Gelineau psalm settings are common in Christendom but new for WELS. YouTube recordings will help musicians hear the consistent pulse that is a hallmark of this style. On the next four pages, singers and accompanists can preview this genre of psalmody in a more usual musical notation.

Psalm 91 - hymnal pew Wittefrom Compline 2
Surely he will save you from the | fowler’s snare and from the deadly | pestilence. He will cover you with his | feathers, and under his wings you will find | refuge.
You will not fear the terror | of night, nor the arrow that | flies by day,nor the pestilence that stalks in the | darkness, nor the plague that destroys at | midday. Refrain
If you say, “The Lord is my | refuge,” and you make the Most High your | dwelling,no harm will over- | take you, no disaster will come | near your tent.
For he will command his angels con- | cerning you to guard you in | all your ways;they will lift you up | in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot a- | gainst a stone.

Psalter pew - Ps 91 Sons of KorahI Will Show Him My Salvation
One of the more difficult settings of the psalter, this is one of the compositions of the Australian group, The Sons of Korah. Viewing the YouTube performance of this psalm will help in learning the melody and rhythm. If a soloist or small group sings the psalm, congregation members can always be encouraged to listen and meditate, or “join in as they are comfortable.”

Ps 111B - psalter pew Cherwein
Tone
Refrain
Great are the works / of the Lord; they are pondered by all who de-/light in them. Glorious and majestic / are his deeds, and his righteousness endures for-/ever. Refrain
He has caused his wonders to be re-/membered; the Lord is gracious and com-/passionate. He provided redemption for his / people; holy and awesome / is his name.
Glory be to the Father and / to the Son and to the Holy / Spirit, as it was in the be-/ginning, is now, and will be forever. / Amen. Refrain
This majestic setting is by David Cherwien, music director of the National Lutheran Choir, and a nationally known conductor, composer, and organist.
