The sociology of Religion
C: Text
The sociology of religion is the study of the mutual interaction of religious and other
social institutions. Religion is often defined as people organized response to the
supernatural, although several movements which deny or ignore supernatural concerns
have belief and ritual systems which resemble those based on the supernatural.
Analyses of the social role of religion include the secular viewpoint of Comte, the
integrative emphasis of Durkheim and Bellah, the conflict approach of Marx, and
Weber's treatment of the dynamic power of the Protestant ethic.
Civil religion refers to a system of widely held religious beliefs, not expressed
completely by anyone denomination, and alleged to be a major influence in American
political life.
The classification of churches into cults, Sects, denominations, and ecclesia indicates
different methods of relating to the society. The
Sect seeks to impose a rigid pattern of ideal conduct on its members but seeks
toleration rather than change from the larger society. The cult may seek to transform
society but more often concentrates upon creating satisfying group experience.
The denomination is a major religious group which hopes that a separation of church
and state will enable it to be influential even though not dominant. The ecclesia is a
church claiming to be the spiritual expression of the total society.
The manifest functions of religion are found in its expressed objectives of reaching
people and persuading them to observe religious rituals, share religious beliefs,
support the churches, and carry on religiously sanctioned activities. Latent functions
are usually unrecognized; they may diverge from or even oppose the manifest
objectives professed by the churches. Latent functions include providing sociability,
aiding upward social movement stratification, and promoting a set of economic values
(capitalist or otherwise).

Conflict often occurs between church and state. Sometimes conflict comes over ethical
issues such as abortion or military service. At other times there is conflict over function,
as when the state takes over social services and handicaps efforts of the churches to
engage these activities.
The Moral Majority is a Movement seeking to restore older values in American society.
Churches may favor either conservative or radical tendencies in the total society.
Fundamentalist theology and emphasis upon personal salvation tend toward
conservatism, while a social gospel often favors more radical Political action. Social
stratification is expressed in churches, and this is especially obvious in the multi-
denominational system in the United States. Even though all churches try to reach the
total population, each tends to attract a particular ethclass group. The fact that
religious activity is one way to express ethnicity may have contributed to the strength
of American churches.
Religious differences have sometimes led to conflict, but currently an ecumenical
movement is seeking cooperation (and sometimes organic union), reconciliation, and
understanding. Ecumenicity is a persistent movement which has extended beyond
Christian churches to consider other religions and even the Marxists. Religion adjusts to
changing life-styles. This can be seen in the changes in mainline churches and in the
flourishing of cults.
Church attendance and membership peaked in the 1960 s. Since then, the mainline
churches have declined slightly, while the conservative churches and exotic groups
have grown.
The rise of scientific secularism has not destroyed religion as some feared. Instead,
people's need for reassurance and meaning has endured, and interest in religion now
appears to be at a high level. While religious forms may change, religion survives. There
are human needs which only religion can fill, and there is little reason to believe
religion will not endure.

Educational institution
C: Text
Educational institutions developed as a systematic way to provide what could not be learned
easily within the family. The United States has a dual public/private school system with a far
higher enrollment in higher education than most other countries.
Institutionalized education includes schools of many kinds plus the apprenticeship
system. A lot of no institutionalized education takes place, for better or worse, in
homes, on streets, and through the mass media, especially television. Contest
education in the United States provides for relatively easy admission with expectation
of many failures or dropouts. Sponsored education in many countries limits admission
to higher educational programs, with the expectation that nearly all will be graduated.
The school is a social system with its own network of roles, statuses, and relationships,
some of which can be shown on a sociogram.
Education has a number of manifest functions, the principal of which are to help people
attain their potential and to prepare them for occupational roles. Latent functions
include prolonging immaturity, weakening parental control, preserving or changing the
class system, and providing some shelter for dissent.
Educational institutions affect and are affected by all other institutions and are in a
constant struggle for autonomy from them. Current issues between education and
religion include tax support for parochial schools, school prayers, the teaching of
evolution, and book censorship.
Devices for protecting educational autonomy include academic freedom and academic
tenure. The achievement level of students in America compares poorly with that of
students in some other nations and has fallen in recent decades, due, apparently, to
decreased selectivity of schools, distracting influences, and dilution of objectives.

Present trends are toward strong discipline and demands for higher levels of academic
effort. Large social-class differences in learning are found in the schools of all countries.
Differences in study goals and habits appear to be the main cause in the developed
countries.
Science and technology have become major institutions in modem times. Scientific and
technological advances carry latent consequences which sometimes are difficult, if not
impossible, to control. Science and technology can be directed at human welfare rather
than human destruction. Whether or not they will be is undetermined.

Social Classes
C: Text
Social classes arise from the consequences of a division of labor. A social class is made
up of people of similar social status who regard one another as social equals. Each class
is a subculture, with a set of attitudes, beliefs, values, and behavior norms which differ
from those of other classes.
Social class is based on total social and economic position in the community, including
wealth and income, occupation, education, self-identification, hereditary prestige,
group participation, and recognition by others. Class lines are not clearly drawn but
represent points along a continuum of social status. The exact size and membership of
a given class is difficult to establish. Class subcultures prepare children to retain the
status of their parents. Social class is an important social reality. Social class largely
determines one's life opportunities and colors personality development. Personal
happiness does not depend upon the wealth of the society but is associated with being
among the more affluent members of one's society.
Functionalists believe that social class assigns privileges and responsibilities to
individuals and thereby helps to get necessary work accomplished. Conflict theorists
deny that class privileges are "functional" and see them as exploitative.
Class subcultures breed a class ethnocentrism, which prevents classes from fully
understanding one another. It is mainly the standards of the middle class that are
written into law and sanctioned by conventional morality. Many differences ordinarily
assigned to race, religion, ethnic group, or to some other kind of group difference are
actually class differences; confusion arises from the fact that racial, religious, and other
groups may be unevenly distributed along the class continuum. Social class molds the
life-adjustment patterns of individuals; the lower class tends to be liberal in political
action connected with economic benefits and conservative in accepting other social
changes, while the opposite tends to be true of the upper class. An alleged "new class"
consists of government servants and those working in some aspect of communication.
These communications elite have upper-class income but are more liberal in social and
political attitudes than the business elite.

difficult for them to do so. In the capitalist (mixed-economy) countries, transfer
payments with progressive taxation reduce inequalities between rich and poor.
Middle-class objections to high taxes make it questionable whether there will be any
further reductions in economic inequality in the capitalist countries.

Demography
C: Text
Demography is concerned with the age and sex composition of the population, its movement,
both within and across national frontiers, and its rate of growth. The age and sex composition
of a population affect its social life in many ways.Changes in age composition are due mainly to
changes in birthrates and are presently increasing the proportion of the aged and reducing the
proportion of children in many populations. The decreasing proportion of youth in the
industrialized countries may reduce crime and teenage unemployment. An increase in the
proportion pf aged also reduces the proportionate number of workers and leads to heavy
pension costs.
Migration is affected by the push given to people by unsatisfactory conditions at home, by the
pull of attractive opportunities else- where, and by the channels or means through which they
are able to migrate. Birthrates tend to vary inversely with social status, but in recent years in
the United States, the birthrates of the poor and of blacks at all income levels have been
dropping sharply. Malthus noted that population growth tends to outrun its food supply,
creating overpopulation and misery unless people control population growth by postponing
marriage. Neo-Malthusians maintain that 'although the gloomy predictions of Malthus may
have been premature, they are basically correct.
The anti-Malthusians feel that the world's resources are adequate for a much larger
population. Marxists and some other anti- Malthusians claim that exploitation not
overpopulation is the basic cause of world hunger. The demographic transition which occurred
in Western countries describes the change from a period of high birthrates and death rates and
then finally to equilibrium based on low birthrates and death rates. Whether the developing
nations will repeat this demographic transition is uncertain.
Population policies may be pronatalist, antinatalist, or a mixture of both. The pronatalists
reward large families and prohibit or limit the use of contraception, sterilization, and abortion.
The antinatalists reward people for having smaller families and provide easy access to
contraception and perhaps abortion. The prospects for the future are uncertain.
In the industrialized countries, including the United States, the trend appears to be toward
eventual population stabilization, which also carries some uncomfortable adjustments.
Developing countries still have rapid rates of growth, but their rate of growth is declining. If
population control efforts succeed, the world's population may eventually stabilize at about
twice its present size. Whether population stability or disaster awaits us remains uncertain.

A community is usually defined as the residents of an area within which all a group's life

physical and social conditions of life were different in urban and rural communities. The
traditional rural community's isolation, homogeneity, agricultural occupation, and
subsistence economy all tended to develop people who were thrifty, hardworking,
conservative, and ethnocentric.
Changing technology has brought a rural revolution, with reduced isolati0n,
commercialized large-scale farming, and a way of life very similar in many respects to
urban patterns. Cities become possible when an agricultural surplus develops, together
with improved means of transportation, and tend to be located at "breaks in
transportation".
Attempts to explain the ecological pattern of American cities have produced the
concentric zone, sector, and multiple nuclei theories, none of which any city perfectly fits
but which many cities somewhat resemble. The most significant current developments in
city structure are the metropolitan area, including the suburb, which now accounts for

intensifies the isolation of the poor from the rest of the society. The city is a

Social and Cultural Change C: Text
All societies change continuously. Evolutionary theories see all societies passing through
quite similar stages of development until some final (presumably ideal) stage is reached,
when social evolution ends. Cyclical theories see societies passing through a cycle of
changes, returning to the starting point and repeating the cycle.
Functional and conflict theories concentrate upon explaining, somewhat differently, the
conditions and processes of change. New traits appear through discovery and invention
or through diffusion from other s0cieties. The rate of social change varies enormously
from society to society and from time to time. Geographic changes can produce great
social change.
More often, migration to a new environment brings changes in social life. Changes in
population size or composition always produce social changes. Since isolation retards
change and cross-cultural contacts promote change, physically or socially isolated groups
show fewer changes. The structure of the society affects change:
A highly conformist, traditional society or a highly integrated culture is less prone to
change than the individualistic, permissive society with a less highly integrated culture. A
society's attitudes and values greatly encourage or retard change. The perceived needs of
a people affect the speed and direction of change. Perhaps most important of all, the
cultural base provides the foundation of knowledge and skill necessary to develop new
elements;
As the cultural base expands, the possibilities of new combinations multiply in an
exponential manner, while knowledge in one area often cross-fertilizes other areas of
development. Not all innovations are accepted.
The attitudes and values of a group determine what kind of innovations a group is, likely
to accept. If an innovation’s usefulness can be demonstrated easily and cheaply, the
proof is helpful; but many social inventions cannot be tested except through a complete
acceptance.

Compatible innovations are more readily accepted than those which clash with
important features of the existing culture. Technical difficulties of fitting a change into
the existing culture often cause great economic cost and personal inconvenience.
People with vested interests normally oppose change, but they occasionally discover that
a proposed change is to their advantage. The change agent's ingenuity and social position
affect his or her success in introducing changes.
Unless change agents know the culture very well, they may fail in their efforts, because
the consequences of changes and the techniques needed to promote them are generally
miscalculated. The consequences of change are endless. Discoveries and inventions, as
well as diffused new traits and complexes, often set off a chain reaction of change which
disrupts many aspects of the culture. The different parts of the culture interrelated and
inter- dependent though they are do not change at the same rate of speed.
The time interval between the acceptance of a new trait and the completion of the
adaptations it forces is called cultural Lag. All rapidly changing societies have many
cultural lags and are somewhat disorganized. In a disorganized society, persons who
may have greater difficulty in finding a comfortable behavior system become
disorganized themselves. When they lose hope of finding a rewarding way of
conducting their lives and cease trying, they have become demoralized; and may
actually die out as a group. While change is sometimes painful, refusing to change can
be even more painful, for change brings gains along with pains. Social planning
attempts to reduce the pains of change, but its success is debatable. The End
