Montour’s Hidden Angels Spaghetti Dinner

Submitted by student writer Jack Roberts

A few years ago, a Montour student, in the spirit of forming and making a senior project for their graduation year,

stumbled upon the idea of doing a charity event of sorts that would benefit the Montour community. Through idea and self-

discussion, this idea formed into an event that was labeled the Hidden Angels Charity event. The program consisted simply of

a spaghetti dinner whose proceeds would go to providing holiday money for the less fortunate families in the Montour School

District. This simple and caring idea sprouted into an event that was looked forwarded to and beloved, and was carried on

long past the students’ graduation, all the way to this year.

Montours’ Hidden Angels event last year of 2016, showed and gave multiple fun and learning opportunities for

Montours’ musical community. On top of guest being delighted by the MHS Honors Jazz Band, the young David E. Williams

Middle School Jazz Band received their deserved time in the spotlight, bringing an authentic jazz feel by playing a few

classics such as Cute (Neal Hefti), Good King Wenceslas (John Mason Neale), and Feliz Navidad (José Feliciano). Towards

the end of the event, a twist in theme occurred and the Middle School Band in the last song abandoned the set theme for the

night and played an all-time classic, Peter Gunn Theme (Henry Mancini), an infamous rock tune written by Pittsburgh's very

own composer, Henry Mancini. And by the end of the night, guest left gorged with student cooked spaghetti and the mental

happiness that thousands of dollars will make sure some kids will have a truly merry Christmas this year.

December Teacher Spotlight

Foreign Language Spotlight - Miss Yough

Submitted by student writer Jack Pockl

“I want my students to have the appreciation for other

languages and to realize that one language is not better

than another” Miss Yough says. For all of her time in the

Montour School District, Miss Yough has proudly

taught Spanish and French to learning students. As an

inspiring educator, she enrolled in a French class in

seventh grade due to her desire to visit Paris to further

understand the influential culture and complex history.

In order to persuade students to feel the same about the

country as she does, she studied at Grove City college

and Slippery Rock university. Besides foreign language,

Miss Yough enforces students to not “dip into others

buckets - fill them with kindness and happiness” and

general respect.

Foreign Language Spotlight - Mrs. Strope

Submitted by student writer Jack Pockl

“My goals are for students to respect each other and

have confidence in themselves” says Mrs. Strope. That

indeed is what many students in her class look forward

to enhancing on top of learning Spanish. Although any

foreign language may be difficult to grasp, Mrs. Strope

wants to create an atmosphere where students can

comprehend the language and culture to its fullest. She

has also taught computers. To teach students her passion

for Spanish culture, she attended West Virginia

University.

Learning Figurative Language

Submitted by student writer Nathan Knause

The 7th grade is entering into reading a new one of a kind

book. They are reading Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse . This

book is set in the Great Depression, a time period not often

written about, in the Dust Bowl of the 1930s. We see this

setting through the eyes of a 14 year old girl named Billie Joe.

This story is written in a free verse poem form. These poems

consist of a magnitude of figurative language and feeling.

This book teaches the students good writing and exposes

them to different style readings for the first time. During the

story, many students had fun activities such as drawing a

picture to represent stories imagery and a creative extension

project with interesting and diverse questions. As well as

teaching kids to read literature, it also taught them how to

create it. Students were supposed to write a poem that

summarized the story using figurative language to the best of

their ability while the poem still making sense. The winner of

this activity was Morgan Hayes. His winning poem is below:

Now take a seat, and listen to my tale Of three lighthouse-men with faces pale. Their eyes were wide with fear- A ship full of sea rats had appeared! And as the wind howled, shutting out the moon above The rats scurried onto the lighthouse, fitting it like a glove. Now, these aren’t you normal rats, you must understand. Take one step closer and they’ll bite off your hand! They were hardened by sea, living on a barge carried by the breeze. Upon the ship whose sailors’ lives they had seized. Now the men look out around the imprisoning sea of blue How would they escape? They hadn’t a clue.

Epitaph and “Three Skeleton Key” Winners

Submitted by student writer Nathan Knause

During the course of the 7th grade year, students are

given many creative projects. One of the most creative is after

their reading of the novel The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton.

Students had to creatively design and write an epitaph for any

character that died in the novel. All epitaphs were put in the

7th grade display case and winner was picked by the teachers.

The winner of the epitaph was Joslin Paulin. The image and

writing of her epitaph is shown below:

Lonely kids walk lonely roads but with friends like family, they may grow.

Johnny grew and became a kid with a golden heart. He was a true hero to all that knew him, as he sacrificed

his life for a couple of kids in the hands of fire. Though out of fear he struck a Soc to his death, he did not hesitate to turn and run into the burning church as

though greeting death like an old friend. He saved his life for another’s and knew it was worth it.

He knew that they had a chance in life and that he no longer did.

So he remains golden in death and will always be remembered to the gang as their pet puppy that had

been kicked too much.

Adopt - a - Family Program

Submitted by student writer Vanessa Rodgers, Student Council secretary

Christmastime brings thoughts of nestling with fluffy blankets by the fire, and watching Christmas specials

with the family. It’s about baking gooey cookies that break with the slightest touch, melting in your mouth as the

scent of sugary sweets envelops the air. The lyrics of carols roll off the tongue like a sleigh down a hill of snow. It

carries memories of decorating the tree with shimmering ornaments, the star on top a center of brilliance and hope.

Yet all of these moments are only a miniature snapshot of what Christmas’ true spirit is meant to be about: giving.

For the past six years, D.E.W. Middle School has emphasized just that.

Each year, there are families in Pittsburgh that are in need, and seek Santa’s help at the North Pole.

Knowing how generous the children are at Montour, he calls our school to help his hustling elves. Santa’s helpers

merrily check off the families’ wish lists, spreading glee to children’s faces on Christmas morning.

D.E.W.’s student council had previously worked for two years with a Pittsburgh based organization. Every

grade level was assigned a family, each one of our Spartans worked together to make sure the wish list was granted.

After our counselors discovered we could bring joy to families in our district, we created the Adopt-A-Family

program. With Santa’s advice, we’ve been discreetly raising money for ten families for four years!

In this program, students who bring in $1 or more had a chance to be an Elf for the Day. Those who donated

had their name filled out on a raffle ticket, and they had a chance to wrap gifts in their own workshop! This year,

the charitable winners were Olivia Heckathorne (5th grade), Gabriel Martin (5th grade), Hannah Witner (6th grade),

Ronin Desesar (7th grade), and Isabella Hervert (8th grade). At lunch, students could contribute by paying to have a

picture with Santa and an Elf, or play some cheerful Christmas music. The basketball team had a foul shot

www.montourschools.com - DEW Newsletter - Brought to you by the students for the students 15

fundraiser, and Student Council hosted a mouth-watering bake sale. No matter what, students could be generous

while enjoying holiday festivities.

Along with these contributions, Grimes Furniture generously provided the program with a donation of their

own. Student Council donated $1,000 to the cause as well.

On Christmas Day, Santa delivered not only presents, but light to young faces. Montour staff thanks you all

for being so gracious, as well as being a true Spartan of Pittsburgh.

Six Sleeps ‘til Santa

The goal of Six Sleeps ‘til Santa was to celebrate the season and allow the students to partake in holiday-themed

events. The week began with a Christmas-themed Hat Day, and students could show off their best holiday hat for a

$1. On Tuesday, students could participate in the Ugly Sweater Day contest and fifth grade was able to enjoy treats

from the student council bake sale. Wednesday was Pay a Dollar to Wear PJs day, and the sixth grade had the

chance to gobble up donuts and brownies from the bake sale. A Hawaiian Christmas and 7th grade’s bake sale took

place on Thursday while on Friday kids donned their formal attire for Formal Friday, and 8th grade’s bake sale

wrapped up the week. The Christmas Spirit even extended into the next week with Monday being Christmas Spirit

Day. Some kids went as far as to dress in lights! Additionally, all week during each grade level’s lunch period, the

students enjoyed a Christmas Jukebox where the students could pay to request special holiday songs. All in all, both

students and staff loved participating in the holiday event and are eagerly anticipating our next themed week.

Cheerleading

Through the football and basketball seasons,

cheerleaders consistently stay on the sidelines cheering

our team’s way to victory. Coached by Tayler Witner,

DEW’s junior varsity cheerleading squad gets together

again for this basketball season. The squad is made of 10

7th graders and 7 8th graders, who cheer for the other JV

teams. The girls also must know partial gymnastic skills

in their routine and stunts. The squad practices once to

twice a week after school in the Large Group Instruction

room. Always there on the sidelines giving our team

unwavering support will always be our cheerleaders.

Girls’ Basketball

Submitted by Student Writer Austin Schaltenbrand

When students head back to school, all basketball

players can’t wait for the upcoming basketball season. This is

also true for the girls’ basketball team. Throughout the

beginning to middle of the school year, the girls’ basketball

team would practice on the weekdays, after school in the

gymnasium. The schools’ gymnasium was also the place for

the team’s home games. The team also had a variety of away

games too. These game took place as far away as Beaver Area

School District and Central Valley School District, to as close

as West Allegheny and Moon school districts. The both teams

overall had a very successful season, 7th grade finishing with

a record of 12-4 and 8th grade finishing with a record of 8-10

the girls’ basketball team is coached by Neal Martin and

Meghan Mastroianni.

Boys’ Basketball

Submitted by student writer Austin Schaltenbrand

As snow begins to fall, and the weather becomes

colder, every basketball players ‘favorite sport

approaches: basketball season. The Montour Basketball

team consisted of both 7th and 8th grade students. The

team would practice weekdays after school in the

gymnasium, with occasional off days throughout the

season. The basketball team’s games took place

throughout the week, also located in the school’s

gymnasium. The team would play teams such as Moon,

West Allegheny, and South Fayette. Even though the

season’s end is drawing near, the basketball teams are

having a very successful season. The 7th grade team is

coached by Mr. Deutsch and the 8th grade team is

coached by Mr. Powers.

Montour Hockey

Submitted by student writers Josh Knapp and Austin

Schaltenbrand

As the snow begins to fall, and winter begins to

approach, hockey season has come back in full swing. Led by

new coaches Scott McCaskey, Bill Hanberry, and Domenic

Santucci III, Montour thus far has compiled an 8-3-0 record

(as of January 19, 2017). This team started in June with their

summer workouts, September with their weekly practices,

and October with their regular-season games. They play

teams from as close as Seneca Valley (located in Cranberry)

to teams as far as McDowell (located in Erie). Made up of

6th, 7th, and 8th graders, this team has gone through a lot

together since the start of June practices. This team has done a

great job so far, and we hope they keep up the good work!

Stuff - a – Bus

Submitted by student writer Casey Vallecorsa

D.E.W is hosting a toy drive called the 5th Annual Stuff-a-Bus. It is done to give toys to children, who without

this program, wouldn’t get toys this year. The program is for children of all ages whose families have hit a rough

patch this year. Every donation from a stuffed bear to a Hot wheels car those kids will love. These kids love

whatever new toy they can get this holiday season. The goal we try to reach is 500 toys. T.L.C will carry the toys

from the bus and to 96.1 kiss FM station to meet Mickey and Big Bob. Afterward T.L.C and the raffle winners will

go to the mall food court and then to Starbucks. We raised 435 toys only 65 away from our goal of 500 toys.

Montour donated busses to the program. So many toys were on the fifth grade bus that they needed to overfill a few

students to the 7th and 8th grade bus. Thank you everyone

who helped this program by donating a toy!
