What Is In This Release?

DecisionSpace® Well Engineering software is the latest significant step in the over twenty year evolution of the WELLPLAN™ software. Building upon this industry leading suite, DecisionSpace Well Engineering extends and simplifies the science through advancements in ease of use and data visualization. DecisionSpace® Well Engineering is integrated with the other EDT™ applications enabling you to install it on the same computer, and share data with other EDT applications. You can be confident that DecisionSpace® Well Engineering software uses the same theoretical science and industry-leading methodology you rely on with the WELLPLAN™ software.

Significantly Improved Usability

For novice and expert users, the completely redesigned user interface provides a simple approach to input data as well as powerful visualization capabilities to quickly interpret results. The software interface is divided into four major sections. Use the tabs on the left to input well related data, and the tabs on the right to input analysis parameters or view a schematic. Select desired analysis outputs using the ribbons at the top, and view output results in the middle section. This interface design provides you easy navigation through the software with minimal clicks. Due to the improved usability, existing WELLPLAN™ users will require minimal training, while new users can quickly learn to use the DecisionSpace® Well Engineering software.

Expanded Sensitivity Analysis

DecisionSpace® Well Engineering provides a powerful method of performing sensitivity analysis for many different variables. Rather than perform multiple manual iterations, you can define a range of values for the numeric variables you want to use in the sensitivity analysis. The analysis will be performed using the defined ranges on all outputs in the Output Area (center section of the software interface) that use the range data. Detailed graphical representations allow you to quickly review the sensitivity results.

Output Drive Inputs

Input only the data needed for the analysis you need. DecisionSpace® Well Engineering provides clear step-by-step guidance on what data is required and leads you through the data input panels in just a few clicks. Dynamic navigation and notifications guide you through entering the required data, and performing the next analysis step. Outputs are calculated and displayed when all the required data is input. This process enables engineers to utilize the software quickly and easily while supporting more accurate results.

“Output driving input” methodology identifies the required data and provides hypertext links to the appropriate data input panel. Simply click the hypertext links, input the required data, and the software does the rest. The interactive wellbore schematic provides visual feedback throughout the analysis. This simplified process allows you to make better decisions by quickly and accurately performing the analysis you need.

Interactive Wellbore Representations

Results are displayed graphically as part of interactive wellbore representations making interpretation of results easy to visualize and understand.

WYSIWYG Reports

The “output driving inputs” design used in the DecisionSpace® Well Engineering software carries over into the reports. In addition to a well schematic and table of contents, the report will contain only the information associated with the outputs you have selected. Information associated with the output includes general well data, and analysis parameters. The reports can be output in a variety of commonly used formats such as pdf, doc, xls, and more.

Service Oriented Architecture

DecisionSpace® Well Engineering calculations are web services based. This provides the capability to replace the Landmark® provided calculation engines with third party, or customer specific calculation engines.

New Centralization Module

This module is new for the 5000.1.10.1 release of DecisionSpace Well Engineering software. It is similar to the Centralizer Placement Mode in the WELLPLAN™ Cementing Module (OptiCem).

Use this analysis to predict the Casing or Liner String centralization for intervals, using the Required Standoff or the Fixed Spacing methodologies. This analysis can be used to determine the centralization intervals for Casings and/or Liner Strings using the selected methodology.

The intervals can be selected using either traditional inputs, or graphically using the Wellbore Curvature Schematic. Once the centralizer pattern is defined, the user can note the effect on the centralization, comparing both methodologies. The selected standoff can then be transferred with a single click to the appropriate input fields (on the String Editor), to be used for all calculations. A “Quick Look” at the Torque and Drag calculation will be shown.

Centralizer Module

Functionality to Expect in This Release DecisionSpace® Well Engineering Software Release Notes

1To simultaneously work on multiple cases when using the DecisionSpace® Well Engineering software, open the software multiple times and work with each case in a separate instance of the software. This will not require multiple licenses of the software.

2The DecisionSpace® Well Engineering software has some of the Well Explorer Tree functionality, although the implementation is different.

3Use the DecisionSpace® Well Engineering software Case Manager to copy a string from one case to another.

4In DecisionSpace® Well Engineering software, wellpath data can be copied between cases (using right-click menu, or CTRL C/CTRL V). However, it is not possible to drag/drop data between cases.

5The intuitive, output driven DecisionSpace® Well Engineering software design does not require an input wizard.

6WELLPLAN™ Status Messages have been significantly improved and replaced by intuitive messages strategically located throughout DecisionSpace® Well Engineering software.

7Just type a number and the unit label you are using, and the number will be converted to the unit used by the application.

Functionality to Expect in This Release DecisionSpace® Well Engineering Software Release Notes

8In DecisionSpace® Well Engineering software, workspaces are called Layouts.

9In DecisionSpace® Well Engineering software, it is possible to import cases and strings only.

No Unicode Characters in File Names

You cannot import or export files that have Unicode characters (that is, characters that are not found on a U.S. keyboard) in a file name. The workaround is to rename such a file using only U.S. characters. This issue will be addressed in an upcoming release.

Existing Layouts

You will lose any existing layouts when you install the 5000.1.10.1 release. This issue will be addressed in an upcoming release.

Known Compatibility Issues With WELLPLAN™ Software DecisionSpace® Well Engineering Software

Known Compatibility Issues With WELLPLAN™ Software

There are issues in WELLPLAN software which have not been fixed that affect DecisionSpace® Well Engineering software. These forward-compatibility issues are listed below.

Exporting a Case from an Older Version of DecisionSpace® Well Engineering software

If you have a Case that had been exported from DecisionSpace® Well Engineering version 5000.1.10.0, and you try to import it into DecisionSpace® Well Engineering 5000.1.10.1, the fluid/mud density may be shown as 0.00 ppg. In order to fix this issue, run the DB Update (go to Tools > DS Well Engineering Updates > Apply DS Well Eng SQL Update) after importing a case from the older version of DecisionSpace® Well Engineering. Defect 3659.

Using Existing Stand Off Devices (SODs) from WELLPLAN™ in DecisionSpace® Well Engineering software

For Restoring Force; if you use existing Stand Off Devices from WELLPLAN™, those will NOT have restoring force. You can manually enter the restoring force for these. Defect 3380.
