PRINCIPALS REPORT

At Dawson Public School we are always evaluating and reflecting to improve teaching practice, motivate and engage student learning and promote a positive, student centered, connected school community. Over the next few newsletters, I will be taking the opportunity to communicate and highlight the progress we are making towards achieving this.

This fortnight, I will be focusing on Strategic Direction 1: Learn. Our purpose statement is to create a student centered, positive school environment where every student is engaged in relevant and personalised teaching and learning programs and feels valued and empowered to positively contribute to the culture of the school. Three of our major focuses in this area are to create: ‘A Consistent Approach to Wellbeing’, an ‘Educationally Connected Community’ and ‘Promote and Celebrate student achievement’. We aim to do this by providing regular information about your child’s learning and regularly inviting you into your child’s classroom to not only view their work, but see how they are learning. To demonstrate our progress in this area to date we have:

● revamped our Meet the Teacher information evening to communicate and share curriculum overviews and termly information, promoting positive partnerships between the school and home.

● used the Skoolbag application to better communicate and promote student achievement. ● started planning for our Goal Setting evening (Thursday week 9 - more information to follow) to share your child’s

goals and demonstrate how they are currently progressing. ● started using an iPhone and android application called ‘Seesaw’ to share and communicate the progress students

are making towards their goals (more to follow). Seesaw allows the teachers to upload photos of student work samples as well as videos of students articulating what they have learned and what they will be learning next.

● developing a new Student Report template based on feedback from last year’s Semester 2 version. We will be seeking feedback from community members at April’s P&C meeting. Please come along and have your say.

● continued to communicate and promote the success of our students at our K-2, 3-6 and last week’s K-6 assembly. It has been lovely to see the number of students who have been striving to improve both academically, physically and socially and emotionally. Similarly, it’s wonderful to see the support our students receive at these assemblies from our families.

● identified students to participate in extension maths, english and STEM classes. ● coordinated meetings with parents for students who require adjustments to their learning (these meetings are

continuing) to ensure all students achieve success at school. ● developed, communicated and implemented our new Positive Behaviour for Learning school wide system. Rewards

days are currently being organised based on student suggestions. ● developed a student centered playground. Stage 3 students are currently leading the way by coordinating recess

and lunch activities, developing leadership skills and becoming positive role models for their peers. Interests groups have also been implemented and developed based on student suggestions.

● enrolled our student leaders in a leadership day to inspire and motivate them to further promote a positive, student centered culture.

● used student behaviour referrals to develop and implement a social skills program targeting specific behaviours that build resilience and coping strategies.

● formed an active SRC who are planning to raise money to purchase passive play resources for under the COLA during recess and lunch.

● Scheduled and programmed a whole school Peer Support program to start in Term 2.

These are just some of our achievements and plans to date. Other longer term plans include upgrading some of our playground spaces to continue to provide our students with opportunities to actively and positively contribute to their school.

Tell Them From Me student survey

Information about the TTFM student survey was sent home last week to our Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 families. These surveys, along with staff and parent surveys provide us with feedback that helps us evaluate our processes and practices. It also gives us the opportunity to see how our students are progressing compared to state averages and students in our area. The results of this survey, will be published early next term.

3-6 pick up arrangements

2:50pm is a busy time of the school day. There are many mums, dads, nans, pops, sisters and brothers and other family members who come along of an afternoon to pick up their children. To help make this a safe time of day, I am asking that all family members picking up their 3-6 children wait under the COLA. Our Year 3-6 teachers will walk their students to the COLA and dismiss them from there. This process will also maintain supervision for the busy afternoon period and ensure all our students are safe.

Skoolbag Update

To receive up to date and accurate information, please download the Skoolbag application. To ensure you get the information you want, please go to GROUPS and select the year group/s that your child/ren belong to. As of this week, information will be sent ONLY to the group it is intended for. In previous weeks and years, we have pushed out information, reminders and letters to all groups, ensuring everyone received information, even though it may not have been relevant to you or your child. This slight change should ensure you receive information that is relevant to you and your child/ren.

Over the first few weeks of school, Kindergarten have begun phonics and have started to learn the phonemes

s, m, c, a, g, o, p and t. They have lots of fun during Literacy groups where they match phonemes, find

them as well as some camera words in texts, learn to write their letters correctly, revise phoneme sounds, create art work to practice their phonemes, etc. They

have also been working hard to learn how to write their names using correct letter formation and no

capital letters in the middle.

Great job Kindergarten!

in 3S

Over the first 5 weeks 3S have been learning about imaginative texts. We have been specifically looking at narratives and letting our imaginations run wild! We have designed characters and taken them on adventures to magical places near and far. All of the students in 3S know about the structure of narratives and we are starting to look at different strategies we can use as authors to capture our readers and take them on the ride with us. Please have a read of some of our stories!

One beautiful morning Sally and her brother went on an adventure to the forest. They found many different animals like cheetahs, elephants, monkeys and zebras. They walked further into the forest when something moved in the bushes. They didn’t hear the noise because they were busy talking. Sally stopped talking and froze. She thought she heard something. Then they came to a house. It looked creepy and had blood all over it. They walked up the stairs and slowly opened the door. In the house was a cheetah. It came out running, trying to eat Sally and her brother. They ran as fast as they could and saw a gate. They closed the gate so the cheetah wouldn’t catch up to them. Then Sally said to her brother “Lets hide behind that big tree!” So they hid behind it and the cheetah jumped over the fence and ran past them. Then they ran to another house. They lived happily ever after. The End!

One dark night in a haunted house a dragon was looking for an egg. When he was looking for the egg he couldn’t find it. But then he saw a treasure chest and he thought the egg was in there. But he needed a key to open the box. When he turned around he saw the key and he opened the chest and got the egg.

What’s happening in 5/6D We have had a fabulous start to the year in 5/6D!

In our classroom we love a good discussion. So this term we have been talking about the characteristics of successful people and how each of us can be successful. Students drew self-portraits of themselves and pondered on the question What shapes a successful person?

After much thought we realised that being successful is not measured by the amount of money you have but rather the positive impact you can have on others. We identified some incredibly famous people such as musicians, sports stars and actors but also acknowledged successful people like our peers, parents, grandparents, teachers etc.

After this awesome art lesson, we decided that we wanted to be successful students and leaders in our school. 5/6D want to be leaders of the DAWSON pack! The symbol of the lion reminded us of the power a leader holds. So we drew some amazing pictures of lions. Each time we look at the window we will be reminded of the characteristics that we need to be incredible leaders. In 5/6D we are loyal, determined, brave, strong, independent and proud, just like lions.

We hope you enjoy looking at our artworks below

The year 3 extension group have been busy learning comprehension skills. They are improving their ability to answer more difficult questions about the text requiring them to “read between the lines”.

1T have been learning about the elements of dance in their PD/H/PE unit. They have learned the dinosaur stomp and talked about the difference between hard jerky moves vs soft smooth moves and how to match them to different pieces of music.

In numeracy support, students have been learning about teen numbers and place value. We have been exploring numbers in different ways using ten frames, expanded notation and base 10 materials.

Dawson Sports News

The students at Dawson have been outdoors enjoying a variety of sporting games and activities in Term 1! We have held our swimming carnival and PSSA trials for the summer competition and a number of our students have attended Zone Trials for Rugby League, Touch Football, and Soccer. It’s been a great start to the year and we look forward to the wonderful sporting adventures we have coming up.

Swimming Carnival: A big thank you to Hannah Touma, Alexander Saleve, and Saptaswa Roy Chowdhury who represented Dawson at the swimming carnival on Wednesday 13th February at Emerton Pools. The students were supervised by Mr Beecroft and we thank him for assisting at the carnival. This year we didn’t have any swimmers make it through to the zone carnival but we know they all tried their best.

PSSA: Thank you to all of the students who trialled for PSSA. This year, we will only be participating in the Tag League competition. Congratulations to the boys and girls who have been selected for those teams. Dawson will be sending 2x junior and 2x senior teams to compete in Term 1 and Term 4. We wish the students, Mr Ilijeski and Mr Kelso (coaches) all the very best for the first round of competition.

Zone Trials: The Mt Druitt Zone Trails were held on Friday 15th February. A number of students from Dawson attended the trials and participated in a variety of sports. Thank you to Desany, Tori-Ana, Lillyarna, Turaki, Tylique, Jack, Timi and Pasi who proudly represented our school. Congratulations to Tori- Ana and Desany who have been selected for the Mt Druitt Zone Soccer Team and Lillyarna on her selection in the Mt Druitt Zone Touch Football Team. Tylique, Timi and Pasi have made it through to the training squad for the under 11’s Rugby League Team and we wish them all the best in making into the final team of 17.

It has been a very busy start to the year but it’s wonderful to see our students being active and proudly participating in a range of sports. Keep up the great work DAWSON!

Congratulations to all of the students who have been selected by their peers to represent their classes in the SRC for 2019. We know you will proudly wear your badges, lead by example and be the voice of your peers at Dawson.

The SRC will meet every fortnight to discuss ideas on how we can make Dawson an even better place to learn and play! This week on our SRC Agenda we discussed:

1. Creating PBL postcards. Each SRC member was going back to remind their classes to create their PBL postcards that will display our school values of being safe, respectful, cooperative and responsible. The SRC will help the PBL committee to select the winning entries in the not too distant future.

2. PBL Reward Day – SRC members shared ideas on what they would like to see happen for our end of term celebration.

3. The playground has many organised sports running but today we discussed what types of activities we would like to have in a passive play area. We want all of the students in our school to have exciting and fun activities and games that they feel comfortable to participate in.

It was a successful meeting and we enjoyed hearing from our SRC representatives. Just remember to see one of your friendly SRC representatives if you have any ideas or suggestions.
