News from our principalDear Parents/Guardians,

It has been a delight to see our students’ strengths and talents shine this Term, through rich learning programs, school events and community based opportunities. Students have been developing new skills and knowledge, which has been reflected in students’ first semester reports. As you know we have high expectations for our students and believe that by identifying students’ specific needs, providing targeted support and rich opportunities to grow our students will achieve great things.

Our Open Morning, ‘Flourishing Festival’ was an exciting event for our school community this Term. The festival provided an opportunity to open our school, celebrate student’s strengths and achievements and give parents the opportunity to engage with agencies and community partners. We had a record number of parents and families attending the school, creating a positive and vibrant atmosphere of celebration. Students did an outstanding job speaking in public and sharing their stories, school programs and enterprises. Creating strong links with our parents and community is a key focus for the school and the ‘Flourishing Festival’ was a great opportunity to make a connection.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the agencies and organisations who supported our school to take part in our ‘Flourishing Festival’ including: Biz Link, Forrest Personnel, Interchange, SMP, EDGE, Intework, ACTIV, Centrelink, Volunteer Taskforce, Workpower, Anglicare, Headspace, Down South Therapy, Independent Living Centre, Grace Haven Aged Care Facility and Australia Post.

The Year 9-10 Information Session took place in week nine. This event was attended by Year 9 parents who had the opportunity to hear about our senior school programs and the journey ahead for our wonderful students. Big Plan will commence next Term. Year 9s and their families are invited to participate in after school workshops with a focus on students’ strengths, loves, skills and future life possibilities. We encourage all our year 9s and their families to be involved in these workshops.

We are delighted to announce Jennifer Prichard will commence as the Class Teacher for Stirling Year 9 next Term. Jennifer comes to us from Armadale SHS Education Support Centre and is an experienced high school special educational needs teacher. I wish to thank Amy Mead and Nikki Garnaut who both stepped in to teach the class over this recent period. They, along with the class Education Assistants, have done an excellent job in supporting students and ensuring ongoing progress.

We wish everyone a safe and happy Term break and look forward to welcoming students and families back for Term 3 on Wednesday 20th of July.

Many thanks

Kim mcCollum principal

In Middle School this term, we are promoting our students to flourish through our HAPEER (Positive Health, Positive Accomplishments, Positive Purpose, Positive Engagement, Positive Emotions and Positive Relationships) Model. To support this model we have implemented two new programs.

We have introduced a new Bullying Program designed to give students the tools to prevent bullying behaviour through the blending of school-wide positive behaviour support: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Your Best. The lessons have been chosen to address: awareness of school bully policy; what is bullying; effects of bullying; what to do if you are a victim, bully or bystander and why people bully. As part of their learning, some classes have been creating posters showing their understanding of what they can do to prevent bullying.

This term we have seen our students blossom through their class enterprises. The aim of the class enterprise was to raise money for a worthy cause, in doing so our hope is to instil in our students a sense of responsibility to the world and the importance of helping others. In developing their class enterprises the students have demonstrated their ability to work as a team, to communicate appropriately with adults and gain an awareness of profits and losses. Staff members have really appreciated the yummy lunches, delicious smoothies, luscious bath products, and the artistic magnets. I look forward to what the students will create for us in term three.

This term, our class has embarked upon an exciting new enterprise, ‘Scrubalicious’. The students are making beautiful, natural body scrubs: Rose, Lemon and Vanilla. These scrubs are packaged and sold to staff members and the money raised, is given to the Aboriginal Community Cause. During this enterprise, students have the opportunity to engage in various tasks: Health and Safety procedures, working as a team, measuring and following a formula for each scrub and organising the ingredients. Each student performed various tasks. This enterprise enables the students to focus on workability skills such as:

Occupational Health Safety, organisational skills, social skills and problem solving skills. Recently, the students were able to contribute their services to the Flourishing Festival (Open Day) at our school. They made 100 ‘Scrubalicious’ body pots and packaged them to give out to our visitors who attended this very special day. They were very proud of their efforts.

The students are very happy to provide this service for such a worthwhile cause and find this task to be both purposeful and meaningful.

Stirling year 7

Term two has been terrifically busy in Stirling. I am going to share a mixture of English tasks on which our tribe has worked this term. Everyone has been exploring contraction words using printed ‘surgery knives’ to remove unused letter/s and add an apostrophe in their place. We used pasta as our apostrophes for a bit fun. An example of this is ‘is ‘not’: cut out the ‘o’ and replace it with an apostrophe then write ‘isn’t’.

To help understand texts – TV shows, books, magazines, advertisements etc., the crew has been practising reading comprehension strategies such as Finding the Main Idea, Identifying Facts and Details, and finally, Understanding the Authors Purpose. We use the PIE approach for this one: Persuade? Inform? Entertain or Explain? Some of the text types we’ve used have been comics, song lyrics, news clips, short stories, recipes and levelled texts.

Ayden, Ronan and Ashton have practised suffixes using Spiderman webs that remind them when they might need to drop the final ‘E’ in a word. For example: take + ing = taking.

Natalie and Kiarah have been practising spelling blends at the beginning of nonsense words and they’ve played lots of games in the process.

Ayden is currently reading the novel “Unreal” by Paul Jennings and his predictions of what will happen next have been so good, we think he may be psychic!

Everyone has been learning about narrative writing this term and they seem to LOVE it! We have some awesome imaginations in this class and with the inclusion of other written techniques (such as the use of adjectives), their texts are even better! We hope our Mums enjoyed their special narrative texts that were written just for them on Mother’s Day.

Keep up the greatness Stirling 7’s – we love your work!

anzac year 8In Girls and Boys Group this term, middle school students have been using Growing and Developing Healthy Relationships Western Australian Department of Health resources (GDHR). The foci of this term’s lessons have been on how to maintain healthy relationships in a respectful manner, and emphasize a positive, preventative approach with safe sex strategies. Additionally, students have learnt about the short and long term affects drugs can have on the body and the possible outcomes of harmful lifestyle choices. This was conducted through the Western Australian Department of Education School Drug Education and Road Aware Education Resources (SDERA). With this valuable knowledge, students can now make more informed decisions about the choices they make.

Special announcementWe are very excited about the construction of our New Sensory Room commencing soon. This building will be located in the Middle School area.

anzac day Ceremony Special recognition goes to Alicia who took part in the ANZAC day ceremony at Warnbro CHS ESC with the Navy Cadets.

At the end of term 1, all of middle school went on an amazing excursion to King’s Park. The excursion gave us a great insight into the history of King’s Park with a strong focus on the first Nyoongar people. Heather was our tour guide for the day and while walking around the park, we explored some of the native flora. We got to feel and smell the peppermint tree and then brainstormed what the first people used this tree for. Some of the answers were fantastic including; the tree leaves were used for keeping mosquitoes away and also as an antiseptic.

As we walked around King’s Park, we collected items such as small twigs, leaves and feathers that would remind us of our journey. At the end of the trip, we made a journey stick with the items collected with five different colours of wool: red, yellow, green, black and blue. Each colour had a meaning as Scott explained beautifully in his writing about the excursion to King’s Park.

“Heather talked to us about the journey stick and we had to collect leaves, sticks and we had to find gum nuts too. We had to wrap yellow sun string, black string like the dark trees, red blood string and green leaves string around the stick so we could remember our trip to King’s Park”. Beautiful work, Scott!

We also got to explore the Rio Tinto Naturescape. It was so much fun building shelters from natural resources. We have investigated different types of shelters in class so it was great to get to build our own shelters and to apply what we have learnt about the first people shelters.

We look forward to continuing to explore the lives of the first people in a fun and engaging manner.

Stirling year 9The Year 9 students had the opportunity to participate in a three day intensive course “Try a Trade”, in basic bricklaying/blocklaying, solid plastering and tiling at the Rockingham TAFE. The program was fully funded by The Construction Training Fund (CTF) and Challenger Institute of Technology (TAFE). The students were able to learn and try different trades in the building and construction industry.

Here are their comments;

Keenan: I liked “Try a Trade”, because we got to learn how to grout and tile. The best part was tiling. It was fun.

Britney: I thought it was fun. Going to TAFE was a good experience for me.

Jamie-Leigh: We learnt that you can make lots of things out of tiles. We had to wear work boots, long pants and long sleeved tops. I had lots of fun.

Seth: I had a good time at “Try a Trade”. I got to make a mosaic of my favourite band ACDC.

Michael: I learnt about the different types of trades there are, in building and construction. I thought it was fun. I would like to do this when I leave school.

Note from Senior School deputy

We have had such an exciting start to Term two with so many successes and celebrations in Senior School.

The Flourishing Festival was a demonstration of the hard work, collegiality and collaboration of our staff and students showcasing the Abilities and strengths of our students. The outstanding Directions class showcased their culinary skills in creating home-made pizzas using our new pizza oven following all Occupational Health and Safety guidelines. The Directions students also baked and decorated scrumptious cupcakes for invited guests to enjoy.

The acquisition of the new mobile coffee machine allowed our Hospitality Certificate l students to demonstrate their Barista skills by making Café standard coffee for invited guests. The students were proud of their achievements and presented themselves as confidently as the Industry dictates.

The Building and Construction/ Automotive class was very busy assisting in the early morning set up and produced planter boxes from recycled pallets. They also made inspirational plaques from recycled timber relating to our flourishing model.

The Leadership class focus was to be good role models in our community. The quality and high standard of the banner that was created by the Leadership class was exceptional. Students displayed their banner with pride and their hard work and effort was presented in their visually appealing art.

Our year 10 students shone in their first of many flourishing festivals. Guests were so impressed with the level of commitment and maturity demonstrated by our year 10 students. Both Business and Transport & Logistics classes exceeded all expectations in creating notepads out of recycled paper and scented candles for guests to enjoy.

Warnbro Community High School Education Support Centre senior students proudly supported Class 1 Orthodontics in hosting Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea. Our students, collaboratively with Class 1 Orthodontics, raised funds for cancer research. They served coffee and home-made cupcakes to clients. They presented themselves professionally and effectively demonstrated their Industry skills. Class 1 Orthodontics staff has said “it’s a wonderful way of giving back to the community and we would like to continue the collaboration with Warnbro ESC students”.

business Class year 10This term has been very busy for the Business Students. We have hosted our very own community time and presented our PBS expectation “Wear your school uniform”. We created exciting iMovie’s as a class, which highlighted the importance of wearing our uniform.

This term we have begun attending work placement. Hayden started his work experience journey in Red Dot Port Kennedy. The staff members were very impressed with how quickly he picked up the skills of pricing and ordering and presenting stock. He is excited about attending work placement again this term.

Sharon, Grant, Ronan and Matilda went to ‘Men of the Trees’ in Rockingham. We used our employability skills of prioritising tasks, which ensured we were organised and

completed all tasks to the best of our ability.

Maddie attended the biggest Morning tea in Class1 Orthodontics in Rockingham. She was delighted to showcase her customer service skills and serve coffees to all.

Finally, this term we started making our enterprise products.

We created fantastic cement pots and fragranced candles. The students are having a great time learning new skills and our products are looking both professional and produced to a high standard.

auto and Construction years 11 and 12

As has been the case for the whole year, the ABC Outback class has been busily working on a number of projects, as well as having fun in a variety of places.

We started the term off with a number of excursions, the first being a tour of the West Coast Motor Museum in Mandurah, then a visit to the V8 Supercars at Barbagallo Raceway in Wanneroo. At the Museum students explored the history of automotives and sat in some beautifully restored old cars. While at the Supercars, they were able to investigate garages of a number of racers. They enjoyed watching some great racing and explored the merchandise areas. Despite the blustery weather conditions and the long public transport rides, the students had a great time and represented the school well.

Starting at the end of last term and continuing into the start of term two, our class had also been asked to help Koorana Primary School with a special project. Koorana had a messy area that was overgrown with grass and weeds that they wanted revamped and built into a proper garden. Our students made maps of the area, and as a class, we came up with a new design, which was then approved by Koorana.

Each Friday we loaded up the trailer with our equipment, then headed out to the school, firstly to clear the area, then dig up grass for brand new garden beds. Then we built eight planter boxes, and took them out to Koorana School and installed them, as well as building a brand new outer edge garden. The last stage was to fill the gardens with some manure mixture and plant a few vegetables to get the garden underway.

Koorana was thrilled with the outcome and have already started projects within their school. They also put on a barbeque for our students, where we met with some of the Primary students, offering a great communication opportunity between both schools. We hope this partnership will continue in the coming years.

Two weeks after completing this activity, students headed to Perth, where they toured the Bell Tower (including ringing the bells!). Later they caught the Ferry across the river for lunch, then back again to explore the new Elizabeth Quay premises. Our students have continued to develop their travel training skills and these will be tested once more next term in the final excursion for the ASDAN Using Transport unit.

In other news, our class has just taken the keys of our brand new shed. This will give the Automotive, Building and Construction students the opportunity to participate in more hands on activities using tools. This will include the reintroduction of us making planter boxes and other wood based items from recycled materials.

We had some of these items on display at the recent Flourishing Festival, along with our Solar System display. What made our planets more interesting was our use of technology, where we used QR codes to link to videos of each student talking about the planet that they researched.

What a productive term it has been! In term two we started our convenient “we come to you” coffee enterprise at school and our mobile cafe at Gracehaven Aged Care Centre in Rockingham. Both gained momentum and are building nicely. When we started work-shopping our direction this year, a key focus area came to the fore. This focus area was quality: Cafe quality coffees and cafe quality service. From this mindset, our mission statement was born: to create cafe quality coffees at affordable prices. Now we know it takes about 10,000 hours of deliberate practice to become an expert, but, in just over a term and a half, some of our budding baristas have been turning their hands to brewing beautiful espresso coffees. The positive feedback to our product has been overwhelming. So much so that one patron exclaimed that their coffee was the best coffee they had ever had tasted. Well done baristas! Intrinsic motivation and healthy competition levels are running high with all students working hard to deliver fine tastes and flavours.

This term we have had two students who completed some work placements at two different Dome cafes. Both thoroughly enjoyed their experiences and came away with a greater appreciation of how demanding it is to work in a busy cafe environment. The hardest parts appeared to be embracing changing conditions and adopting a flexible and

responsive mindset to deal with peak time rushes. Interesting challenges from patrons also kept two of our students on their toes and tending to multiple sets of instructions made for very busy times indeed. The students experienced some very valuable and practical learning experiences that we are most grateful to Dome and to our Work Placement team for coordinating. Thank you to everyone involved.

Recently, our class hosted Community Time. Our class video about listening to appropriate music with headphones on, has been nominated for an Academy Award in the Student Films category. Our ASDAN course is approaching its apex. Maths in practice, bullying prevention, morning meetings and drills are being practiced regularly in order to foster the development of core skills.

Term two has yielded so many memorable moments. I’m sure term three will be the same.

Leadership Class years 11 and 12Term Two has been very busy for The Leadership Class! Students have completed a significant amount of Certificate

1 in Leadership Development and we have continued our ongoing commitment to raising awareness about important community issues; attempting to inspire others to take action accordingly.

Leadership Class students showcased enterprise initiatives at our recent Flourishing Festival including: Crime Prevention, Promoting Literacy, Good Manners, Anti-bullying, Act-Belong-Commit and Healthy Eating.

Core Skills for Work are developing well through practical experience during Work Place Learning and within the classroom through highly-structured written tasks. As the year progresses, students will remain focussed on achieving goals and

preparing for their future aspirations.

directions Class year 13Directions Class has continued to be busy working hard on completing their ASDAN units.

In Using Transport we have been going on fortnightly excursions to put our new skills into practice. We catch the bus from Warnbro Sound Ave to Rockingham City and then change buses to return to school. This allows us to practise hailing the bus, tagging on and off and sitting and behaving appropriately on public transport.

On the opposite week, we walk across to the Warnbro Fair shops to purchase items for our Independent Living ASDAN unit and to practise the skills of shopping and using money.

For enterprise, we are making a variety of soups that are proving to be very popular with the staff in the ESC and the mainsteam school. Students are responsible for designing order forms, taking orders, writing shopping lists, then cooking, delivering and following up IOUs.

Even though we have been very busy this term, we have made sure we have lots of fun and laughter as well.

bike program

Students have continued to work hard in the Bike Program during term 2. We now have a number of students who are rebuilding their bikes after having sprayed their frames with an assortment of colours in inspiring and creative ways. Lightning bolts, stripes, speckled paints and bright colour combinations are now a feature of the bike shed!

The program owes its success to the invaluable help of our bike club student assistants, Grant, Jesse, Jack and Alex and the efforts of our community volunteer, Mr Eric Maddock.

If you have an old bike that you no long wish to keep and wish to donate this to our program, please feel free to contact Mr Harries at 9553 0122. Also if your child wishes to try out the program, please get him/her to talk to their teacher about being added to our waiting list. The way our students are working so enthusiastically, it won’t be long before spots become available!

mathematic Notes

try some of these with your child at home!

Solving problems is a practical art, like swimming or skiing or playing the piano: you can learn it only by imitation and practice...if you wish to learn swimming

you have to go into the water, and if you wish to become a problem solver, you have to solve problems.

George Polya, Prominent Hungarian Mathematician (1887-1985)

Mathematical problem solving is an important life skill. Problem solving involves a range of thinking processes including analysing, interpreting, reasoning, predicting, evaluating and reflecting. It is through problem solving that students develop a deeper understanding of mathematical ideas. When students learn to apply their mathematical knowledge to help solve given problems, they begin to appreciate the relevance and usefulness of mathematics. According to Woodley & Swan 2016, futurists tell us that the rate of technology is doubling every 2 years. Our students need to “embrace new challenges” and “be problem solvers”.

Problem solving encourages students to become more engaged and enthusiastic learners during mathematical lessons. Problem solving collaboratively with their peers allows students to communicate their thinking and reasoning, as well as listen to the thinking and reasoning of others. It provides opportunities to teach, model and practise the social skills of being an effective collaborator, such as being inclusive, agreeing or disagreeing respectfully and reaching consensus.

Maths problems are all around us. Parents can support their child’s mathematical problems solving skills by solving problems that occur in daily life together with their child. This will help your child make connections between what they are learning at school and the world around them.

Literacy Notes

Reading

As you know, our students have had a lot of success with literacy over the years. For example, the Reading Success method has really engaged our students and many of the students have made spectacular gains. Additionally, for most students, spelling results have improved over time.

Our New Improved Literacy Program stays true to the methods used in Reading Success sessions BUT we will be using additional materials to ensure that our students get the best mix of: phonics, oral reading, decoding, blending (pushing sounds together), segmenting (separating sounds), reading, sorting, writing, AND comprehension.

The process for our New Improved Literacy Program involved the following:

Students spend two weeks developing skills set out in our handbooks that accompany the reading books. The handbook includes preliminary work on reading, spelling and comprehension games and activities. The students become familiar with all aspects of the reading process prior to actually reading the book – hence, they achieve Reading Success. This is very important as, for some students, it may be the first time the students have experienced success and joy of reading.

Spelling programs

Spelling Mastery and Morphographic Spelling are Direct Instruction programs that have proven to provide success for our students.

Teachers and other support personnel use scripted books in order to be consistent with the presentation. Instructions are given using a fast approach and are presented as many times as necessary in order for the student to reach mastery of spelling skills. The students tend to enjoy this fast-paced method of delivery and the repetition helps students to remember, for example, spelling rules.

Students become involved in the lesson. The incentive tends to be teacher’s feedback to the student. This can be in the form of scores in their workbook, spoken word, encouragement and, most significantly, when the students add up their scores and graph the results.

At the risk of sounding like a Politian, “There has never been a more exciting time” to be involved in literacy.

Speech & Language therapy and occupational therapyIt has been a busy and productive term at Warnbro Education Support Centre. Speech pathology and Occupational Therapy have been targeted towards individual students, groups and whole classes in the areas of language, social skills, speech, literacy, and emotional and sensory processing.

The Friendship Group, which is on fortnightly Thursdays, has been fun filled and productive. All the students have been enthusiastic and have participated fully in the session allowing for new friendships to be formed and new social skills to be learnt.

In class social skills lessons have begun this term in the middle school. Here, using role-play and explicit teaching valuable social skills are taught, such as identifying and recognising feelings in ourselves and others, the importance of assertiveness, and how to ask appropriate questions in different situations. All students have participated fantastically in these social skills lessons and these will continue to run throughout the year.

Information from Family Liaison officer Qantas Carer Concession Card: If you are travelling Domestically across Australia and only with Qantas there is a concession card available for $49.50 which will reduce the price of flights for your son/daughter if they are eligible. The card is in the student’s name which means the carer can alternate. Please feel free to contact me at school for an application form and more information if you are contemplating flying.

Wellbeing team You may have seen our HAPEER posters dotted around the school or you have taken a copy of the poster home from our recent ‘Flourishing Festival’ event.

So, what is it all about?

As you will be aware, health and wellbeing is a key focus area of our school. Our purpose is for every child to flourish and to gain the necessary learning, life skills, health and wellbeing to lead fulfilling lives beyond school.

To do this the school has implemented a Positive Education approach. Positive Education is education focused on traditional areas of academic and social development, complemented by approaches that nurture wellbeing and a flourishing life.

The ‘HAPEER’ model refers to the six wellbeing domains through which students can maximise their potential and flourish. They are; Health, Accomplishments, Purpose, Emotions, Engagement and Relationships. Character strengths such as kindness, gratitude and hope, supported by mindfulness practice, are also key aspects of the HAPEER Model.

Our HAPEER Model is a research based framework, designed to promote personal strengths and resilience so that our students flourish both in school and in their community.

physical Education ExcursionOn Wednesday the 1st of June Mr Gardiner and Mr Beattie took a group of students on an excursion to Domain Stadium to have a tour of the West Coast Eagles complex. The first leg of the tour began in the West Coast Eagles reception area, as we all walked into the reception the Head Coach Adam Simpson walked through and greeted all of the students. Some of the students were absolutely blown away and could not believe they just met the Head coach of the team and that he would be walking through the reception at the same time as they were. As one of the students said “If we meet the coach first up, then I am guessing we are going to have a great day!”

After the gym area visit, the students were taken past the pool area and given an opportunity to see where the players would do their rehab after each game. Alongside the pool area was the trainers area, this is where the players would go each day for a massage to help make sure they are ready for the next weeks game. Next to the pool we entered the players room, this room was built for players to come together during the week to relax before and after training sessions. In this room was where we first met one of the players Corey Adamson. Corey is well known

around the club as he was drafted from America where he had been playing baseball for 7 years. It was like the Eagles knew we were in there because two more players, Paddy Brophy and Tom Lamb, walked through the doors. The students were blown away and could not believe they were rubbing shoulders with AFL players. The smiles on all of the students’ faces were amazing! All of the students were given a poster, which had all the players’ signatures on them that they had just met.

It came to the end of the tour, and it was now time for us to leave the complex and have some lunch on the oval next to the stadium. One of the students came to me and said he was a little upset, as he didn’t get to see a big named player, when all of sudden as the students were kicking the football when a car arrived at the oval. Out jumped Josh Hill! Mr Gardiner walked over to Josh and explained that they had just finished the tour of the complex and asked would it be ok if the students could meet him and grab an autograph, Josh was happy for this to happen. The excursion to Domain Stadium was a great success and it was a wonderful moment seeing all of the students faces fill with joy when they got to meet a handful of AFL players.

teacher development School – update

In term two we worked with staff at Canning Vale College to share with them how we use The Big Plan to support our students prepare for an interesting and fulfilling life after school. Canning Vale staff found this to be a valuable learning experience and have put into action a plan for how The Big Plan will be used in their school.

In week six, we were asked to run a Transition Forum in Bunbury. Representatives from schools, Disability Services and a variety of support agencies in the South West attended the forum. The forum provided an excellent opportunity for sharing best practice and discussing ways to work together for the support of our students. Participants at the forum are now part of our Transition Community which promotes ongoing sharing of resources and ways of working effectively. We would like to thank Newton Moore ESC for facilitating the set-up of this forum.

Our transition activities were celebrated by students at our Flouishing Festival. The students from across all year levels shared their transition stories. Students shared how our transition processes helped them feel safe at school; how they are supported to develop friendships; how they are exposed to new and interesting learning experiences; and how they are supported to have high expectations and encouraged to develop skills and pursue interests. As a TDS school we are able to share these processes with schools from around the state and in doing so, expand our own learning for the benefit of our students.
