MDS Pitch ControlSafety and reliability are essential requirements to ensure optimal wind turbine operation. The MDS Pitch System offers a wide range of in-house designed and manufactured electrical pitch systems, designed to maximize the availability and performance of your wind turbine, while applying minimum loads to the structure. The MDS Pitch System enables you to minimize maintenance costs, reduce downtime and improve ROI.

MDS V5MDS V5 is part of the latest pitch system developments made by Mita-Teknik. The system design is a new generation based on the ideas and components validated during previous MDS versions, and optimized by replacing the weakest component with modern top-shelf components to improve quality and minimize the maintenance requirements. To verify the required robustness and performance, all components are tested in Mita-Teknik laboratories. More of the components are enhanced to extend the IP class, making them robust against small particles inside the cabinets.

MDS V5 is designed for fast charging the energy storage based on ultracapacitors. MDS V5 use dynamic switching (patent pending) of the ultracapacitors to utilize maximum stored energy, and at the same time offer maximum power to the pitch motor during LVRT or grid drop when rotor speed is high and maximum pitch performance is required.

Pitch System PerformanceThe performance required from the pitch system depends on the wind turbine design, end to a large extend this is the rotor diameter and wind class and only secondary to the wind turbine nominal power. The MDS V5 pitch system comes in 9 different drive sizes (62 to 336 A) and 7 different motor sizes (5.5 to 30 kW), which can be mixed in up to 16 different combinations, making it possible to select the most cost efficient solution for any wind turbine.

Mita-Teknik load and control engineers can offer simulation of your wind turbine with all IEC61400 load cases, to ensure the pitch system meets the performance requirements in all relevant situations, and at the same time is not over-dimensioned. The simulation report list all required peak, average and aggregated values to select the optimum MDS V5 solution.

Maximum Safety The MDS Pitch System pitches the rotor blades collectively (CPC) or individually (IPC) to maintain rotor speed and blade loads at optimum, while at the same time keep the rotor speed below maximum. The blades are pitched to feathering position - automatically and autonomously in case of safety system activation. This ensures that the wind turbine come to a safe stop.

Maximum wind turbine safety is achieved by three separate and independent MDS cabinets, working as an integrated part of the wind turbine safety system. This design gives the individual MDS V5 the possibility to activate the turbine safety system in case any unsafe conditions develops inside the pitch system.

The MDS Pitch System continuously monitors the communi-cation from the wind turbine controller, and the health of all pitch system components, including pitch motor and energy storage, and it ensures the wind turbine is stopped even if the wind turbine control system is failing. In case of grid fault and/or grid drop, the MDS Pitch System is powered from the energy storage.

The energy storage delivers the power and energy to the pitch system during grid fault (LVRT) until grid returns - and in case the grid does not return (grid drop), the energy storage also delivers power and energy for pitching the blades to feathering position, bringing the wind turbine to a full stop.

Robust HardwareThe MDS V5 Pitch System is designed for the harsh environment in the rotating hub of on- and offshore wind turbines. The MDS V5 Pitch System performs effortlessly in wide temperature ranges, continuous vibrations and forces induced during constant rotation and emergency stops. Additionally, the cabinet doors can withstand the weight of service personnel working in the hub.

The MDS V5 Components MDS V5 Pitch Drive and Controller

› The task of controlling the pitch motor speed and positioning the wind turbine blade at the desired angle is performed by the MDS V5 drive and controller (one set per blade). › The MDS V5 drive is an advanced high performance frequency converter with integrated PLC.› The drive is available in 9 different sizes with different motor current capability.› The PLC and software is equal for all 9 drive sizes.› The MDS V5 drive handles autonomous emergency feathering when the safety system is activated.› In some of the configurations, the MDS V5 controller handles all other functionality and stores all CMS and historical data.

The communication between the wind turbine controller - placed in nacelle or tower base - is handled inside the MDS V5 controller in MDS cabinet #1 or directly to each of the individual MDS V5 drives in some of the configurations.

The controller handles all required protocol conversion and customized data mapping.

In configurations including the MDS V5 controller, the MDS controller is also in charge of all internal command, control and synchronization tasks of the complete pitch system, while also handling the data collection from the MDS controllers in cabinet #2 and #3.

Different communication protocols are available. CANopen and Ethernet based protocols are integrated directly in the MDS V5 controller, and other protocols - e.g. PROFIBUS and EtherCAT - are implemented using additional hardware for the interface. This design ensures that all required protocols can be implemented without redesign of the MDS V5 controller hardware.

The communication between the MDS cabinets is based on Ethernet and is handled by the MDS V5 controllers. This depends on the configuration and is either based on Ethernet, CANopen or Modbus RTU.

In the most advanced configurations, the individual MDS V5 controller handle all communication with the individual MDS V5 drive. The communication runs via Ethernet fieldbus and via RS232 for remote firmware update.

In configurations including Ethernet based communication the user also benefits from easy connection to laptops during any service or trouble shooting session.

The MDS V5 Components MDS V5 Options

MDS V5 is available with more options which is selected during ordering. As standard some of the options are included by default and is therefore sometimes delivered even if not ordered.

› The communication interface must always be selected.› Main switch on outside the MDS V5 cabinet can be selected. This switch allows operators to switch off the 400 VAC supply. Be aware that main fuse is used as the main switch in case this option is not selected.

When the LED light installed inside each of the MDS V5 cabinet is not sufficient, the hub light option can be selected. The hub light is switched on/off by the existing light switch on the outside of the MDS V5 panel. The hub light option comes in two different versions: › Hub light on MDS V5 control cabinet #1, #2 and #3.› Hub light on MDS V5 control cabinet #1.

Digital IO for monitoring and controlling the lubrication of the blade bearings can be selected. The lubrication comes in different versions all controlled from the wind turbine controller via communication:› 24 VDC 10 A with one relay output and two digital input for monitoring and feedback.› 24 VDC 10 A with two relay output and two digital input for monitoring and feedback.› 24 VDC 20 A with two relay output and two digital input for monitoring and feedback.

The MDS V5 Components Sensors

› The sensors required for MDS V5 must maintain their low tolerances during their entire operational life- cycle to maintain the blade angle positioning accuracy.

The following sensors are included in the MDS V5 delivery:› Emergency Stop Limit Switch (ESLS) - Limit switch at 100° stopping the blade pitching in case of pitch system failure.› Safety Stop Limit Switch (SSLS) - Limit switch at 90° activated when the blade is in feathering position.› Inductive Tooth Edge Sensor (ITES) - Inductive sensor monitoring the passing edges of the teeth on the blade bearing.

The MDS V5 Components Energy Storage

› The energy storage supplies the energy to MDS V5 during LVRT and grid drop. › The energy storage is always designed to deliver the required power and energy during LVRT and a following grid drop. The design takes the natural aging of the energy storage into consideration to balance the performance and the expected service life.

Energy storage is often selected based on the fact that VRLA batteries have lower initial cost, and ultracapacitors have longer service life. The energy storage can be delivered in the following configurations: › Ultracapacitor with minimum 5 and maximum 30 modules (each 90 V 10F).› VRLA battery with 33 or 66 modules type LC- WTV127R2 for maximum 5 years service life.› VRLA battery with 33 or 66 modules type LC- WTP127R2 for maximum 10 years service life.
