Data-Driven Instruction
Why?? • Collecting meaningful data through regular assessment
gives us the opportunity to:
• Be More Intentional in Our Teaching • Ensuring that we’re considering the needs of all our students—
Regular assessment is the first step to effective differentiation.
• Identify and Remediate Gaps in Learning Through RtI • This is especially important this year as we transition.
• Measure Growth with Initial & Summative Assessments (replaces the previous end of year assessment)
• Key to share with Students, Parents, School Board, Community
2 Steps to Data- Driven Instruction
0 Assessment 0 Initial/Diagnostic/Benchmark
0 First 1.5 Weeks (or when a student joins your class)
0 Formative 0 On-going
0 Summative 0 Final
0 Differentiation 0 Math Groups
0 Changing the way we approach math instruction
0 RtI 0 Tier 1 will have trouble with the lesson at hand.
0 Most Tier 1 interventions will be in your TE or in the Reteach book
0 Tier 2 several gaps in prior knowledge 0 Strategic Intervention (Online Resources)
0 Tier 3 more than 1 year behind 0 Intensive Intervention (Online Resources)
Diagnostic:
▫ Beginning-of-Year Test***
▫ Prerequisite Skills Inventory
▫ “Show What You Know”
At the beginning of each chapter
Identifies students’ levels of preparation for the content
Diagnostic charts help teachers identify what interventions are necessary before beginning chapter instruction
▫ Diagnostic Inventory Assessment
Formative:
▫ Lesson Quick Check
Every day
Diagnostic Charts help teachers identify issues and implement interventions
“Common Errors” / “Springboard to Learning”
▫ Mid-Chapter Checkpoint
▫ Portfolio Assessment
▫ Middle-of-Year Test
▫ Test Prep
Summative:
▫ Chapter Review/Test
▫ Chapter Test
▫ Performance Assessment
▫ End-of-Year Test***
Assessment
Assessment Diagnostic:
▫ Pre-Course Test with Item Analysis
• The Pre-Course Test covers material that students should be familiar with from earlier courses. The Item Analysis can be used to determine topics that need to be reviewed.
▫ “What You Learned Before”
At the beginning of each chapter
Identifies students’ levels of preparation for the content
“Fair Game Review”
Formative:
▫ Homework Check
Every day
Diagnostic Charts help teachers identify issues and implement interventions
“Common Errors”
Chapter Quizzes (2 per chapter)
Vocabulary & Concept Check
Mini Assessment
▫ Standardized Test Prep
Summative:
▫ Chapter Review/Test
▫ Chapter Test (Customizable Disk)
▫ Project-based Assessment
▫ End-of-Course Test
Teachers & Schools Can Strategically Improve Instructional Practices:
• A data-driven decision making system allows administrators and
teachers to adopt a proactive approach to curriculum design and development.
• Demographic data can be used to provide valuable information
about meeting the learning needs of students now and in the future.
