Half Moon Theatre gives young people from birth to 18 (25 for disabled young people) an opportunity to experience the best in young people’s theatre, both as a participant and as an audience member. Our Creative Learning programmes include curriculum-focused activity, after-school and out-of-

school workshops and initiatives to support young people’s personal and social development. We have

a range of performances on across the year for schools to bring groups to. We also offer an extensive

CPD programme for school staff. We are a London-based company with 25 years of experience in

understanding and responding to the needs of inner-city schools.

TRANSITIONS SUMMER SCHOOLS using drama to support new Year 7 students with their transition to secondary school Half Moon’s ‘Make a Play in a Week’ programme brings together new Year 7s before term starts in a summer school project that will equip the young people with new creative skills and knowledge, build their confidence and team-working skills and offer a chance to engage with the facilities and other children in their new school. Over five days, students work together to create a drama-based performance taking on various roles within the theatre-making process. We offer one or two week Summer Schools and tailor the focus of each week around two different artforms including music, spoken word and movement.

Feedback from previous programmes

STAFF Summer School is a fun start to a whole new life at secondary school. It prepares our pupils with the tools needed to make a confident start. The summer break between primary and secondary is possibly one of the biggest changes the children will have faced to date. A summer school is the best possible foundation to lay for future success.

STUDENTS It was a great experience: it really helped me build my confidence. It was nice to be doing something during the summer holidays.

PARENTS Summer School is wonderful because it helps to build confidence in children and encourages them to express themselves. It helped my daughter make new friends and I noticed a great difference in her confidence. She really loved her experience.

CAREERS IN THEATRE hands on project-management style experience of all aspects of professional theatre at KS3/4 Our multi-disciplinary introduction to theatre making for students at KS3/4, Careers in Theatre, gives participants the opportunity to work alongside theatre specialists culminating in creating a performance piece over just one day. Students are allocated a discipline for the day (acting, stage management, lighting design, set/costume design, composition/sound design) which then become student-led, culminating in role-playing a production meeting, running the technical and dress rehearsals, leading up to the final performance at day’s end with extension activity including the creation of action plans to achieve their career ambitions within the arts. Note: presently this programme is in the main offered to KS4, but we have piloted the pro-gramme for Y7s as a tool to develop collaboration and team-building within the first terms of secondary education.

Careers in Theatre is a three-phase programme:

Phase 1: a day-long programme in November which brings together around 50 students, often from two or three different schools, in teams of five disciplines who use a script extract as a stimulus to work collaboratively to produce a fully staged performance by 5pm. More than 300 young people take part over five to seven days.

Phase 2: participants return to Half Moon in January for two after-school practical sessions on auditioning for Drama School and interviewing for technical courses; finding out about routes into the industry. Students take away an understanding of the skills and qualities necessary for a career in theatre alongside the qualifications which can help them achieve their ambitions.

Phase 3: one student from each school undertakes a one-week work experience placement at Half Moon including observing workshop activities in the local community, supporting our Youth Theatres and arts administration work.

Dates for 2015/16

Phase 1: 11-17 November 2015 (9.30am-5pm)

Phase 2: Dates TBC

Phase 3: Ongoing throughout the year

SCRIPTWORKS a student-centred new writing and performance project for secondary schools and non-mainstream settings. Students work with a professional writer, director and/or designer to create their own piece of theatre to be performed to family and other students. This is developed over a series of work-shop sessions (in-school or after-school) with an emphasis on devising, scripting and collabora-tion skills. The theme can be discussed at the planning stage offering, for example, an enhance-ment of a cross-school or termly focus. This programme is particularly successful among G&T students, as an intensive preparation for GCSE, or in non-mainstream settings as an issue-based intervention.

TECHNICAL SKILLS a training programme for teachers and students focusing on the technical aspects of the Drama course Teachers and students together focus on building their knowledge of lighting, set design and sound as part of Units in GCSE and A-Level Drama as well as for project management of school productions. This programme can be created as a bespoke offer alongside our Careers in Thea-tre programme or as intensive training for teachers and students together or for students in the run-up to their exams.

Components 1 and 2: PERFORMANCE SKILLS a KS4 project offering students the chance to perform to one another to enhance their final performance Half Moon will host a sharing evening where groups can feel the heat of performance to get their pieces up to scratch before their final exam. Performing in the professional theatre space under the lights and supported by a technician, students will share their work with their peers at Half Moon staff for feedback from professionals and other young people studying GCSE Drama. Participants get a two-hour voice workshop prior to the sharing to focus on some key vocal skills to enhance their performance.

Half Moon, in partnership with Tower Hamlets Arts and Education Service (THAMES), is offering a further programme of Continuing Professional Development for all school staff (teachers, TAs, Learning Mentors etc.). This programme aims to address school development plans and provide specific training for teachers as identified in on-going appraisal within the performance review process. Half Moon also coordinates the Tower Hamlets Secondary Drama Forum which is a chance for teachers to come together to share practice.

CPD sessions are free to staff members from Tower Hamlets schools. Fees apply for other professionals, with discounted rates for PGCE students.

Gallery @ Half Moon - exhibiting artwork In the summer term we enable a secondary school to exhibit students’ artwork in our Gallery. We can take up to 26 pieces and will hold an Opening Event for students, staff, friends and family.

Coming to performances at Half Moon Every autumn we have a week of performances of a piece for 13+ audiences, produced by Half Moon or one of our partner companies. We provide additional resources (videos with the crea-tive team) etc as well as a Textback Q+A session at the end of each performance to enable the students to collate all the information they will need for their Evaluations.

We also have performances of 13+ shows in the Spring term. Contact us to find out what is coming up next.

Arts Award / Artsmark We are an Arts Award Supporter meaning that many of the programmes we offer schools and young people can be used as part of Discover, Explore, Bronze and Silver Arts Awards.

We can work alongside local schools who are looking to achieve Artsmark status to create a varied arts offer to all students in the school.
