AORN Journal CE Articles Can we use Journal articles as teaching opportunities with CE’s for staff? Answer: You may have the staff read the articles, answer questions, and complete the evaluations and send to AORN with the CE fee. Since the articles hold an AORN copyright, they may not be sent through an approval process for contact hours or taken by an approved provider or accredited provider to award contact hours. You may, however, use other Journal articles without CE attached to develop your own education program using the article as the teaching methodology, identifying the objectives, developing a test, etc. You could send that program through the AORN Approval Process or any accredited approver.

PERIOP 101I have medical students, interns and PAs coming into my OR on a routine basis. Most of them lack formal education that will prepare them for the perioperative environment. My staff members are constantly complaining about having to “watch out for them.” I would like to make this a better experience for both groups. What does AORN have to offer? Answer: AORN has a group of six modules that will prepare medical students, interns, and physician assistants for entry into the perioperative setting. These modules cover the following topics:

The Surgical Environment Aseptic Technique Safety in the Surgical Suite Surgical Instruments Scrubbing, Gowning and Gloving Hemostasis, Sponges and Drains

For Periop 101 customers, this “modified course” is available right now. Students will have access to the course on AORN’s Learning Management System for a six month period. By using this online standardized didactic education, the facility educator would just need to arrange for skills labs to demonstrate and allow for return demonstration of identified skills.

Confidence-Based LearningHow does Confidence Based Learning (CBL) help learners retain information? Answer: CBL gives learners a series of questions about a particular topic. After answering a set of questions, they receive feedback detailing which answers were correct, which were incorrect, and explanations for both. Learners continue answering questions until they have mastered them all! Since feedback is given almost immediately, they don’t waste valuable time wondering how they’re doing.

Attention Periop 101 Administrators Have your students successfully passed the Periop 101 final exam? Give them the Periop 101 Achievement Pin For more information, call 800-755-2676, Ext. 1.

Education: FAQs con’tNursing CE Contact Hour ApprovalA speaker from Congress has agreed to give her presentation at our next chapter meeting. Since her program was approved for Congress, do we have to submit an application for contact hour approval?

Answer: Yes, it must be approved for contact hours. This is true for speakers from any of AORN’s events. AORN is accredited by ANCC as a Provider of Continuing Education for Nurses as well as an Approver. All of our events – face-to-face, online, Journal CE’s – are developed by nurse education planners and program coordinators through our Provider Unit. Thus, all programs provided by AORN belong to that particular AORN event and can’t be presented elsewhere. Speakers don’t automatically have possession of the contact hours for any presentation provided by AORN. Applications for contact hours from other entities can be submitted through our Approval Unit. For more information, visit the AORN CE Approval Process web page: www.aorn.org/Education/CEApprovalProcess/
