The Interview
Mrs. Harrison: Welcome to DeskTop International Sales Office. I’m Mrs. Cynthia Harrison and I will interview you for the position of receptionist or administrative assistant.
Linda Marino: It’s a pleasure to meet you Mrs. Harrison. Thank you for meeting with me. My name is Linda Marino.
Mrs. Harrison: I read your resume and you seem like a good prospect for this position. I would like to ask you a few questions before I make any decisions.
Linda Marino: I am here at your service.
Mrs. Harrison: It says in your resume that you worked part-time as a secretary for six months. Where you fired or laid off? Why did you leave your previous job?
Linda Marino: I worked at B&E Lawyers and it was a great training place for me but I am looking for a full-time position in sales. I resigned to look for a full-time sales position where I can utilize my skills in a more permanent level.
Mrs. Harrison: Tell me about your office skills.
Linda Marino: I am a very organized, productive and friendly administrative assistant. I keep very organized files, calendars, and desk. I work well with my administrators and follow orders diligently. I maintain an outgoing office atmosphere where our clients or customers are #1.
Mrs. Harrison: This job requires you to type letters, orders and do spreadsheets. How are your word processing skills?
Linda Marino: My skills are fair. I know how to type, save files, transfer them via e-mail, and use the other basic functions of a computer. I don’t know how to create spreadsheets but I am a fast learner and I am willing to learn.
Mrs. Harrison: Are you willing to attend an intensive computer training program if we pay for it?
Linda Marino: Most definitely!
Mrs. Harrison: Have you ever taken any special vocational training?
Linda Marino: At B&E Lawyers I attended a paralegal Saturday course. I have also attended seminars related to office management and ambiance.
Mrs. Harrison: Fantastic! It states in your resume that you speak Spanish fluently. How did you learn it?
Linda Marino: I learned Spanish at home. My parents are Latino and Spanish was the main language we spoke at home. Later in College I took courses to improve my written skills.
Mrs. Harrison: Are you willing to take a Spanish oral and written test?
Linda Marino: I am.
Mrs. Marino: Do you speak other languages besides Spanish?
Linda Marino: No, I don’t.
Mrs. Harrison: Becoming the administrative assistant requires traveling to Spanish speaking countries. Are you willing to travel? How is your time availability?
Linda Marino: Yes, I am. I am recently divorced and my time is wide-open.
Mrs. Harrison: Do you have a passport or visa?
Linda Marino: Yes, I do. My passport doesn’t expire for another seven years.
Mrs. Harrison: Are you willing to work weekends and if needed, holidays?
Linda Harrison: I am willing to work weekends and holidays except Christmas and Thanksgiving. Those are very important family holidays.
Mrs. Harrison: That’s understandable. Do you own a car? Will the commute be a problem?
Linda Marino: I seldom use public transportation. I do own a car but I need to buy a newer model soon. Commuting is not a problem because I live 30 minutes away.
Mrs. Harrison: Well, Linda. You have answered all my questions. Do you have any questions for me?
Linda Marino: Yes, I do. I would like to know for who I would be working for? Will I answer to one boss or several?
Mrs. Harrison: You would exclusively work for me and on special occasions such as events or fairs, you would also work with my business partner.
Linda Marino: One last question; it was not stated in the ad the starting salary. How much would I be earning?
Mrs. Harrison: The starting salary is $2,500 a month with medical and dental benefits. Of-course, with all traveling expenses paid by the company.
Linda Marino: The pay seems just and the job sounds incredible. I hope you give me the opportunity to work for you.
Mrs. Harrison: Well, Linda. You are dynamic, friendly, competent, educated, well-spoken, willing to learn and best of all; you seem trustworthy. I would love to have you aboard and work together with you. The job is yours! Can you start on Monday?
