Uranquinty & district residents are invited to attend a neighbourhood meeting with Councillors & Council staff.

7pm Wednesday 6 August 2014 Uranquinty Community Hall

Every year, Councils across the state of New South Wales use Local Government Week to reflect on the services they provide to the community, and highlight some services to the wider community.

As part of Local Government Week which runs from 4-10 August, this week’s edition of Council News interviews a range of community members about their relationship with some of Wagga Wagga City Council’s most loved services.

Community members like Anne Carmichael (pictured right), shares her story on being an active member of Wagga Wagga City Library for over 30 years, and how she introduced her children and now grandchildren to the Library as well as maintained her own passion for lifelong learning.

Of course, there is always a lot of focus internally and in the community on the $1.2B of infrastructure and assets that Council provides and maintains such as roads, bridges, car parks, footpaths, kerb and gutter, stormwater, sewer, parks, landfills, and public buildings.

Council News hopes the stories overleaf give a more personal perspective on how some of the other Council services enrich the lives of individuals in the community.

Celebrating connections

In one of Wagga’s biggest expressions of ‘paying it forward’, Wagga Wagga City Council announced the 49 community groups and individuals who were successful in receiving a total of $140,000 in the Annual Grants program.

The successful applicants of Wagga Wagga City Council’s 2014/15 Annual Grants Program were listed during the July Meeting of Council and showcase the breadth of local programs, projects and activities being undertaken within the community with Council support.

“As always, the Grants are funding a wide variety of projects by community members including new lighting installations at sportsgrounds, mental awareness training, rural hall upgrades and creative arts workshops,” Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Rod Kendall said.

A complete list of the projects to be funded is available to view on Council’s

website.“Council’s Annual Grants Program

provides an annual funding opportunity for community-based groups in Wagga Wagga to start a whole new program, continue with an existing one or improve how their immediate community connects and grows,” continued Mayor Kendall.

“The grants are a commitment to harnessing the power of individuals within our area and to help create a strong, creative and supportive community.”

A presentation evening will be held on Thursday, 4 September 2014 for the

successful grant recipients, where their project funding will be officially handed over.

Next year’s funding round will be open from March.

The Annual Grant program encourages applications across seven categories: • Sporting and Cultural Facilities • Community Programs and Projects • Neighbourhood and Rural Village • Arts and Culture • Local Heritage • Event Attraction and Marketing • Sustainable Environments

Council is seeking public input to the choice of a name for the Environmental Conservation area in Lloyd that identifies with its location and environmental purposes. In keeping with the purpose of the name and its historical context, Council has identified three Wiradjuri names suitable for the area.

Niyambaa - Squirrel Glider Birri Wirrimbirra - preserve of White Box Birramal - the bush

Community input into the proposed names is currently being sought and results will be included in a future report to Council for consideration. Once endorsed by Council the preferred choice will be officially registered on maps and documents relating to the area.

This consultation will close at 5pm on 18 August 2014 For more information contact David Read, on 1300 292 442.

Council News - A Wagga Wagga City Council publication

In the last 12 months, over 35,000 people visited Wagga Wagga Art Gallery to enjoy a wide range of exhibitions, activities and events.

The Gallery is strongly supported by the Friends of the Gallery, an independent volunteer organisation which raises funds for acquiring new artworks as well as organising social functions.

Gail Crozier, the current President of the Friends, has been involved with the Gallery since the late 1970’s.

“I’ve had a lifelong interest in art with my own work in pottery, silver smithing and painting,” Ms Crozier said.

“I first got involved to help hang exhibitions in the Council Chambers and then at the Gurwood Street site. It was great fun and I got to know the prints and the glass very well.

“About ten years ago I came on to the committee of the Friends of the Gallery with a new group to get the social side of the Gallery going, which brought a whole new audience in. I’m always surprised at just how many people I talk to now, who say they come in to the Gallery regularly and how much they appreciate it.”

Wagga boy Zac Blencowe was just 11 months old when the Oasis Regional Aquatic Centre opened in 2003, but he was one of the first people through the door on the opening day.

Now, 11 years later, his obsession with the pool

continues and he uses the pool on a weekly basis.

“Swimming helps keep me fit,” Zac said.

“I come down once a week and have my swimming lesson which helps keep me fit for all the other sports I play.”

Aside from the fitness aspect, Zac says he likes to go to the pool to have fun.

“I like to come down and play with my friends, it’s fun,” he said.

On average 300,000 people visit the Oasis Regional Aquatic Centre each year.

The Wagga Wagga City Library has 25,936 members and more than 207,000 people visited the library in 2013/14.

Anne Carmichael, a library member for over 30 years, is one of the 700 people who visit the Wagga Wagga City Library each day.

“One of my favourite things is to get a takeaway coffee and sit with my grandchildren while they play in the Children’s Area,” Mrs Carmichael said.

“It is so relaxing and the view is to die for. When my children were small we brought them along to Storytime and now I am back again with my grandchildren.

“The library has such a convivial atmosphere and I always feel welcome. I love being surrounded by books and people who love books.

“There are many cross generational activities like book launches, exhibitions and performances.

“My grandson Jasper loves school holiday activities, especially LegoLand and he would come every day if he could.”

The Wagga Wagga City Library also provides a Home Library Service, free wifi and many electronic resources – eBooks, eMagazines, eAudio Books and eMusic.

The Museum of the Riverina is a cultural facility of Wagga Wagga City Council that inspires imagination and promotes lifelong learning. It is a place where objects and memories are kept and shared to tell the stories of the region and its people.

For regular Museum visitor Warwick Hull, the Museum’s educational value and locations are its key benefits.

“The Museum of the Riverina is a fantastic asset for Wagga and will continue to attract visitors to our wonderful city for years to come,” Mr Hull said.

“I think as I become older, the

Museum’s relevance also seems to increase for me.

“The children of our area are lucky to have access to not only the visual benefits of viewing objects, but more importantly, the educational ones as well.

“The location of the Museum in the Historic Council Chambers is a most appropriate use of a wonderful heritage building. Wagga Wagga should be very proud to show off this grand building as a Museum. The housing of the permanent collection at the Willans Hill site makes great use of a larger area.”

I take great pleasure at presenting my first Councillor Column.

I have now had the privilege of being Mayor of this wonderful city for almost two years and I am constantly amazed by the amount of support this city receives from within. In Wagga Wagga there are a vast number of community groups that give freely to improve the lifestyle of everyone who lives in the city. They include ‘friends of’ groups, choirs, men’s sheds, sporting and social clubs, progress associations, community hall committees, emergency and fire volunteers, seniors groups, book clubs and service clubs to name a few. The contributions made by these and many other organisations are invaluable to Wagga Wagga. My special thanks to you all.

Also, we have many individuals who work tirelessly often without any public recognition. These people are largely the carers who improve the life of so many individuals in our city that are not so fortunate. They give

their time freely, without fanfare, but with the reward that they have contributed positively to another person’s well being. If you are aware of any person undertaking such work, then please take the time to stop and thank them because they make a significant difference to many of our citizens.

The other aspect of Wagga Wagga that also stands out is the number and quality of events and performances that are held in the city. In the coming weeks and months there will be many opportunities for you to immerse yourself in the many events and activities being staged in this city.

As we all know there is much more to local government than simply roads, rates and rubbish. It’s all of the so called optional services such as sports grounds, libraries, theatres, walkways, art galleries, halls and parks that make the city a wonderful place to live.

As Peter Cox said on Australia Day 2014, Wagga is big enough to count but small enough to care.

Everyone in Wagga has a relationship with the Civic Theatre.

More than 48,000 people have seen a show at the Civic Theatre in the last 12 months.

One of the many local theatre lovers is 11 year old Ned Prescott.

Ned is a regular theatre patron and attends season shows with his parents. As well at watching performances, Ned is a keen actor.

“Theatre means singing, acting and dancing. These are my three favorite things to do,” Ned said.

“I played Oliver on stage at the Civic Theatre last year.”

“This week I performed on stage with Opera Australia.”

There is a growing group of people who come along to the Civic Theatre season shows of plays, opera, ballet, symphonies and concerts delivered by some of the best performing arts companies in Australia. After each season show the cast join the audience upstairs for supper and a drink for a relaxed chat about the performance - something that you don’t get in many cities.

Family Day Care here to helpWhen Nicole Dunn found herself at home with 11 month old triplets she

realised she needed help to care for them. Friends and family help had been helping out up until then, but Nicole and

her husband realised they needed more formal support.Nicole contacted Wagga Wagga Regional Family Day Care and investigated

the option of In Home Care. This is how their wonderful Educator Fiona came into their life and Nicole says they are blessed to have found her.

“We needed help with feeding and settling the girls and Fiona was experienced and very capable,” Mrs Dunn said.

“She supported our family through the demanding times of three small babies offering guidance and reassurance all the way.

“Now the girls are a bit older we like the idea of them going out of the home into a more structured environment where they are still educated and cared for by Fiona, but in a family setting.

“We love Family Day Care because it is a small intimate setting just like our own home and would recommend it to any family looking for individualised education and care,” said Fiona.

Wagga Wagga Regional Family Day Care currently has 57 Educators who care for over 350 children each week.
