Grand Knight’s Message Dear brothers, I want to thank the brothers for voting for me as your Grand Knight this year. I am honored and humbled to lead such a noble group of men. I pray for your continued support, advice and help in the coming year. This will be a great year as it is the 100th year of our council’s existence. The 100th anniversary committee is doing a great job with organizing the Mass, an open house on July 21st and the dinner on Saturday July 27th. Please come out and show your pride in the achievements of your council for the last 100 years. I want the council to have more opportunities to build the comradery that makes this council a place where we brothers want to come and spend time. We are going to continue the family events and will focus on the fraternal brotherhood of our council to welcome new brothers and provide them a space to come and gather to make strong bonds. These strong bonds have always provided the strength required to continue our charity and voluntarism for our church and community. I need your help to declutter the pool room so we can all play pool again. I need some brothers to help set up poker games after every meeting so we brothers can

enjoy each other’s company. If a bother has a game or group event they think would be fun for the group, please bring it up to me or the officers and discuss how we can help you make it happen. There are already brothers looking into baseball games and fishing trips. If you can help, please let me know. I request your prayers and help as we start the 100th year of our council. This year we will continue in the brotherhood, charity, service that has made our council great for the past 100 years. Your brother in Christ. Chris Charan

insignia and a Red Cross armband, he went to meet with the leading German medic. As he returned through the no-man zone to the American side, he was shot in the back by an enemy sniper. He was just 32 years old.

Fr. Ignatius Maternowski was born in Holyoke, MA. on March 28, 1912. After graduating from Mater Dolorosa Parochial School in 1927, he attended St. Francis High School in Athol Springs, NY, where he was a member of that school’s first graduating class in 1931. He entered the Conventual Franciscan Friars in 1932. After pursuing further studies, he was ordained a priest by Bishop Thomas O’Leary of Springfield on July 3, 1938, in the chapel of Saint Hyacinth College and Seminary in Granby. After the outbreak of World War

pauses to remember the 75th anniversary of the D-Day invasion, our Conventual Franciscan community also remembers a confrere who participated in the “Longest Day”, and who gave his life for the troops he was serving. In the early morning hours of D-Day, June 6, 1944, Father Ignatius Maternowski, a Conventual Franciscan priest-friar of St. Anthony Province, parachuted with a large number of troops of the 82nd Airborne Division into occupied territory in the town of Picauville in Normandy. An American glider had crashed nearby, and there were many casualties. Maternowski began ministering to the wounded and dead paratroopers and glider victims. Realizing that a suitable field hospital would be needed, he attempted negotiations with his German counterpart, in the hope of combining their wounded in one common hospital. II, Maternowski and several Franciscans of St. Anthony Province responded to the need for service as military chaplains. In July 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and later volunteered to become a member of the 508th Parachute Infantry Regimen of the 82nd Airborne Division. After rigorous training with fellow troops, he attained the rank of captain, and served for 23 months before his death. On June 9, 1944, U.S. soldiers from the 90th Infantry Division recovered Maternowski's body, which had been left on the road for three days, and removed it for burial near Utah Beach in France. In 1948, his remains were returned to Holyoke for a Requiem Mass in Mater Dolorosa Church, and interment in the Franciscan Friars plot at Mater Dolorosa Cemetery in South Hadley, MA. Even though Fr. Maternowski was previously listed as having been killed on June 13, 1944, Fr. James McCurry, Minister Provincial of St. Anthony Province (now Our Lady of the Angels Province) said through the help of U.S. Rep. Richard Neal's office, they were able to confirm that Maternowski was the only U.S. chaplain killed on the actual D-Day, June 6, 1944. It is worth noting that another of Fr. Ignatius’ confreres of St. Anthony Province, Fr.

Indiana pro-life leaders issued a statewide, Indiana Call to Prayer for today upon learning the unlicensed abortion facility in South Bend will open its doors next week to begin abortions.

On May 31, Whole Woman’s Health Alliance (WWHA) won an injunction from a federal judge allowing it to begin doing abortions in South Bend without a state license. Indiana Attorney General Curtis Hill filed an appeal against the federal judge’s ruling.

“Women and children deserve better than this,” said Mike Fichter, President and CEO of Indiana Right to Life. “We used to hear that abortion should be ‘safe, legal and rare.’ These days abortion proponents want women to ‘shout their abortions’ and now they want to subject them to abortions at this unlicensed facility.

“We are issuing a statewide call to prayer today, mourning the lives that will be lost in South Bend and remembering the women whose lives may be in grave danger thanks to the activist decision of a federal judge. May God have mercy on us all.”

NEW HAVEN — As part of its Protecting Our Children program, the Knights of Columbus has released a video that features the compelling experience of two parents who came to grips with the realization that their son had been molested by a trusted family friend.

The 30-minute feature video, “Protecting Our Children: A Family’s Response,” includes the first-hand recounting by a Knights of Columbus family of every parent’s worst nightmare—the sexual abuse of their child. The video also includes commentary and practical tips for parents from Dr. Monica Applewhite, a leading expert in the field of sexual abuse.

The family explains how easy it was to miss the signs that abuse was taking place and their regret that they were not more aware about some of the signs of abuse that would have helped them to know how to protect their children. Dr. Applewhite adds points regarding the tactics of predators and how they manage to manipulate their victims and those around them.

“This video is a critical resource for families seeking to keep their children safe,” said Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. “Hearing the experience of a mother, father and their son is eye opening and will help parents and guardians take the necessary steps to protect their children.”

The video, which is meant to complement the initiatives of other segments of the Church, will be distributed to members of the Knights of Columbus throughout the United States and Canada as part of its child protection program.

Additionally, the Knights of Columbus will create a family resource guide in conjunction with Dr. Applewhite that will accompany the video. The Knights and Dr. Applewhite are also exploring the possibility of producing age-appropriate videos for middle school and high school students to arm them with the information needed to prevent and disrupt sexual abuse. The Knights will offer the video to dioceses, Catholic schools and their employees and volunteers for free on its web site.

“The problem of the sexual abuse of minors needs to be addressed on a number of levels, but we want to focus our attention on protecting families, which is a founding principle of the Knights of Columbus,” Supreme Knight Anderson said. “The family in this video showed great courage by sharing their experience to help others.”

The video is grounded in the Knights’ Building the Domestic Church program, which encourages the development of faith-filled families.

Bible Study

It is kind of funny but mostly sad that the Bible is the bestselling book in the world and the least read. As Christians we feel compelled to own and read a Bible to better understand our religion and help others by sighting examples as they speak about the Bible and mis-quote it as they did not read it, because they heard something by someone else or on TV or in a lyric in a song. So what are all people doing with those bibles as they read a few chapters and decide they are not understanding or just the kind of reading they are not accustomed to. They are putting them in their book cases, desks or prominent areas but the most favorite is the coffee table.

This says everyone’s heart is in the right place and perhaps their guardian angel urged them to buy it to learn more about God, but as they can not read it to them and explain, it gets dusted off once a week on the coffee table. However, lets not stop with the display, lets say I know owning my own bible is the right thing to do but I do not understand it, what can I do. I think a good answer is to go to your local church and ask them if they have any Bible classes that you can take with other members of your parish.

I had noticed in our bulletin at St James we had such an opportunity and I joined it. I found it to be a great source of inspiration, understanding our religion better and having guides to help us learn and understand it much more than we could do at home alone. The Bible is 72 books rolled into one, therefore without committing to a year of two of study it was broken down to what they call a timeline that lasted only 26 weeks. It is more than a gloss over but an understanding of the overall bible by digging into Genesis to the Passion of Christ then sending the Apostles out to spread the word of Jesus to all known parts of the world and to make disciples of all that would help them. This course is a gift from God that we can get a better understanding of our history and the way our fore father guided us all through turbulent times.

As we have completed that section we are now into the Prophets that God chose to guide His lost sheep back to church from drifting away. We all heard these prophets’ names in church every week in the reading or in the Gospel. It would also be a great time to learn about these people who gave up their lives to be the voice of God to the people at the time, amazing stories.

I recommend this to all Knights and their families, to learn their (Continued on page 13)

The month of July marks the 100th Anniversary of the founding of the Knights of Columbus Los Crusados Council 1990. Our theme is “100 Years of Service”, service to our parishioners, our community and those less fortunate that we are. Here are the celebrations we have planned:

Sunday, July 21st, all Knights are invited to attend the 12:00 pm Mass

at St. James in honor of our 100th anniversary. 4th degree Knights are asked to wear their color guard attire or a tuxedo. All others, please come join in the celebration of Mass and bring your families with you. We will process in with the celebrant and will have pews reserved for us.

After the noon Mass, we will have a reception at our Council Hall. We will have on display as much as we can get of our historical artifacts – pictures, past awards, our Council charter, etc. Cake and refreshments will be served. Please come and bring your families, friends and fellow parishioners.

On Saturday, July 27th is our dinner/dance celebration, starting at 6:00 pm at the St. James O’Gorman Center on Anza Avenue at Garnet. Tickets are $45 and must be reserved/purchased in advance. Dinner and program will begin around 7:00 pm followed by dancing to the tunes of Abrakadabra, a very up beat South Bay band playing a variety of music.

For tickets, please contact Ranil Fernando at 310-433-8362, [email protected], or just mail your check to him at 20545 Victor Street, Torrance, CA 90503.

This is a “once every 100 years” opportunity. So please join us as we

celebrate this milestone in our Council’s history.
