Christopher Hall

My Dear Brothers In Christ,

At the recent Knights of Columbus Diocesan Training Conference, Bishop Zurek reminded us of the importance of the work that we do. He noted that the first

principle of our order and the focus of many of our activities - - Charity - - is a cornerstone to our lives as Catholic gentlemen. He quoted Pope Benedict XVI’s first encyclical, DEUS CARITAS EST (God is Love), stating “the exercise of charity is an action of the Church as such, and that, like the ministry of Word and Sacrament, it too has been an essential part of her mission from the very beginning.” (II, 32) The Holy Father reminds us that charity is a necessary and natural part of the Christian life. As Knights of Columbus, you know the importance of charity and understand how its exercise can grow your spiritual life.

Of course, the effort and energy required of a life of charity can sometime wear you down. There will be many months ahead where it seems like the council is always involved in an activity and some weekends will last an eternity. A charitable life needs to be renewed and strengthened. This is accomplished through prayer and through the practice of our faith in the sacraments. Pope Benedict XVI again reminds us that “prayer, as a means of drawing ever new strength from Christ, is concretely and urgently needed.” (II, 36)

And so, to help build a proper context for the work that we will do in the coming year and to help strengthen us for this journey, I am proud to announce that the Knights of Columbus will sponsor a Day of Eucharistic Adoration on August 18-19, 2006. The Adoration service will begin on

Friday, August 18, at 5:00 and continue through the night and next day and conclude with 5:00 Mass on Saturday, August 19. This is an excellent opportunity to come and pray with your brother Knights and, as Fr. Kevin reminded us in his homily at last month’s Mass, to be disciples of Christ and demonstrate that discipleship to our parish community the world. While we will be inviting the entire parish community to join us, it is important that the Knights ensure that there is a constant presence with our Lord in the Eucharist. We need brothers to commit to one-hour blocks of prayer to meet this commitment. Of course you are welcome to stay as much as you like. You may contact Ken Macinga, Church Director, if you are interested in participating. There will also be opportunities to sign up at next months meeting and after all Masses on the weekend of August 12-13. You may also contact me at [email protected]. Please join your brothers in this day of prayer and spiritual renewal.

May God bless you and your families in this year ahead.

Here’s Your Sign Jewels of Council Officers Each Council Officer has his own ceremonial robe and a metal emblem called a jewel worn on a ribbon around the neck. This month we’re looking at the jewel worn by our Lecturer.

The Lecturer provides entertainment for the members after meetings, particularly the general membership meeting, and handles certain other major social events of the Council such as Family Dinners. His emblem consists of Lyre and Scroll. These are traditionally symbols of music and literature and the arts. Hence, the Lecturer is in charge of entertainment. His ribbon is white over blue. The Lecturer wears a black robe with national blue trimming and blue cincture with silver fringe.

These new Knights took their pledge on July 20th at Christopher Hall. These men have the distinction of being the last to go through the “old ceremony” for becoming a First Degree Knight. The “new” ceremony for the First Degree is scheduled for October 19 at Christopher Hall.

Here’s David!

David Rayner found the time to become a Knight. He is heading up the Men’s Acts Retreat at St. Mark this August 3-6. There are several Knights on the team and all will say that David is a great leader. Welcome to Council 7613, Dave.

Subscribe to K of C E-List Brothers, a very easy way to be informed of significant events in our council is through email notices. This vehicle is not meant to replace the Newsletter and is used sparingly so that when you subscribe you will not be inundated with meaningless information. It is a very important method for informing you of sick members or their families.

To subscribe go to www.kofc7613.org - our council's web site. Click on Subscribe to E-List located under the picture of Christopher Hall. Follow the instructions on the screen. It is very straightforward and easy to do. However, if you need some help, contact an officer and he’ll help you through. If you no longer want to subscribe, there are instructions to unsubscribe.

Event Changes Please mark your calendar for several changes in some of the Knight’s events. These changes are due to conflicts, better times, new information.

Council 7613 Picnic changed to October 8th from August 12th. Squires Pancake Breakfast October 29th and April 29th. Tootsie Roll Drive changed to October 21st from October 14th. Fund Raiser changed to October 27th from October 6th. Christmas Party changed to December 16th from December 9th.

Brothers, The gym has been reserved every Saturday from 8:00 am to 10:00 am for basketball. There are a few dates blocked out for parish events and a calendar of those days are below. We will also have to move to a different day or miss some weekends when CYO needs the gym. Bring your own balls. It will be friendly basketball. Depending upon how many show up, it will probably be 1/2 court 5 on 5 on one or both ends. See you at the meetings on Thursdays and at the gym on Saturdays. Again, this is adult basketball for Knights. This is not open basketball for anyone that wants to play. If someone wants to play and is not a Knight, give them a Form 100. Steve Cennamo Advocate

KNIGHTS SOCIAL COMING UP SEPTEMBER 29TH On Friday, September 29, 2006, Council 7613 will host a membership social in Christopher Hall. The event is open to all members of the council and their spouses/ girlfriends. Baby sitting will be provided. If you are new to the council, this will be a great time to meet your Brothers and introduce yourselves. Mark your calendars and plan on attending. This is a BYOB and BYOF event, so bring enough to share with your Brothers and our guests. This will be a fun night with music, dancing, door prizes, 50/50 and more. You will also have the opportunity to review our many charitable fundraising functions and get signed up to participate in them. Please RSVP to PGK Brian Nelson by email at [email protected] or by phone to 494-6604 by September 15, 2006. Let him know how many will be attending and if you need baby sitting.

Chicken BBQ Time Sneaking Up On Us I hope that each one of you is having a great summer. But, before you know it, we will be having our first-of-the-fraternal year internationally famous chicken barbecue. That’s right, mark your calendar for the weekend of 8-10 September. I cannot tell you how much I am looking forward to kicking off another year of charitable work and fun-filled memories with some great guys. I hope you feel the same way. You can go to our web page and view the other weekends we have reserved. I hope you will reserve that time as well. I am sure most of you realize it, but chicken bbqs don’t just happen on those special weekends. There is a lot of work in the “off season” as well. As a matter of fact, a guy that does not like to be recognized, but is an invaluable “cog” in this is our dear brother knight, Johnny Klar. Besides recent repairs on our pit, Johnny is specifically designated as our firewood man. I know he will be seeking some assistance this month gathering wood. Then we will have a day of splitting and stacking this valuable commodity of oak and mesquite. God bless Johnny and all you brothers for the extra time you put in for this part of the bbq as well. Please be prepared to answer the call when it comes out. With a lot of help, we can wrap things up in just a few hours. If you have not done it yet, do something with your children that they will never forget. Go camping, take them on a dirt road and let them drive, there are lots of things that you can do. One critical thing that I don’t think we parents let our kids know about is just how important our Holy Mother Church is to us. We think that just by our example they will absorb what being a Catholic is all about. Too often I have spoken with men who don’t understand why their children left the faith. Do not take chances - tell them it is more to you than just going to church on Sundays. Let them know about the prayers you say that they never get to see; and the importance that faith plays in your everyday life. Sure, they see you go to mass, but they really do not understand if you don’t tell them. You will never regret each moment you speak to your children about God and His Church. It is manly. It is necessary. I promise you. God bless each and every one of you. Let’s show Matt how much we support him and our ministry by getting involved. I am extremely excited about this year’s Internationally Famous Knights of Columbus Chicken Barbecues! May Our Blessed Mother intercede for you always! Mike Pattillo

Knights of Charity by Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson Recently, we announced the results of our latest fraternal survey of charitable activities. During 2005, Knights of Columbus worldwide donated more than $139 million to charity and logged over 64 million hours of volunteer service — both records for our Order.

Any organization would be justifiably proud to announce such accomplishments and I am grateful to all my brother Knights for their dedication year in and year out. Significantly, we are building upon many initiatives to help those in need regardless of nationality, religion or race through our co-operation with Special Olympics, the Wheelchair Foundation, the Points of Light Foundation, Veterans Affairs hospitals, and our increased efforts for disaster relief following Sept. 11, 2001, and most recently the hurricanes in the Gulf States. Surely, the Knights of Columbus has remained faithful to Father Michael J. McGivney’s vision and our principle of Charity. For these reasons, we received with special joy our Holy Father’s first encyclical Deus Caritas Est (God is Love), dedicated to the Church’s mission of charity. I firmly believe that it is Providence and not mere coincidence that the pope’s first encyclical and our first principle are dedicated to the virtue of charity. As I said earlier this summer to our state deputies, our Holy Father sees clearly what needs to be done, and we Knights must be 100 percent in alignment with his pastoral mission. We must always remember that our mission is inseparable from the mission of renewal that was set for our Church by the Second Vatican Council which Pope Paul VI said presented to the world, “the Church of the Good Samaritan.” May our commitment to the Order’s principles of Charity, Unity and Fraternity grow stronger each day so that each of us may daily live more fully the lesson of Deus Caritas Est. Vivat Jesus!

My Brother Knights, May the peace of Our Lord be with you Last year was a great year, and we must strive to continue our Texas tradition of being the Best of the Best. Susan and I thank you for your continued service to our Church, our Order, our communities, and our families. We ask for your continued support of the Catholic Church and the principles set forth by Father Michael J. McGivney. Our theme for this fraternal year is "Lift High the Cross." We, along with our Major Directors, have set some ambitious, but obtainable goals for this fraternal year. Remember our obligations to offer membership in the Knights of Columbus to every eligible Catholic man and establish the presence of a council in every parish or mission. In doing so, Texas will indeed have IT'S BEST YEAR YET and we will indeed witness an EXPERIENCE OF A LIFETIME! VIVAT JESUS!

CATHOLIC SCRIPTURE STUDY (CSS)

Catholic Scripture Study is a bible study that contains Scripture readings, thought provoking questions, small group discussion, incredible speakers and a weekly commentary. The study is doctrinal-based Catholic program that nourishes a deeper love for Christ and His Church. The small group discussions offer an intimate and comfortable setting for fellowship and prayer support. This year we will study the Prophets and Revelations. We have both morning and evening sessions, every Tuesday starting September 5th. Babysitting is also available. Registration will be the weekends of August 12th and August 19th after all masses. Ricki Brady

KNIGHTS ADORATION

Council 7613 is going to have a 24 hour Adoration starting on August 18 at 5:00 pm and ending at the 5:00 pm Mass on August 19. We are planning on having a Corporate Communion at that Mass. We are looking to have all our Knights sign up for one hour during this time. What makes this special is that we are opening this up to the entire parish at St. Mark. The Parishioners will be able to sign up after Masses on the weekend of August 12-13. We will need Knights to man the tables after Masses. The Knights will even provide security during the night. So please sign up at the next meeting. This is a wonderful way to be visible to the parishioners at St. Mark.

The Weeds in our Lives © Tony Masiello 2006 Isn't it amazing how you never have to water your weeds or nurture them and they still give you an unwanted crop? I can remember as a young boy growing up in Santa Cruz, California my grandfather showed me how to dig up this pesky weed called Bermuda grass. It was terrible stuff and it would really spread if you didn't get it out by the roots. That was then. But more recently when my wife and I bought our first home about 8 years ago; guess what I had to deal with? If you said weeds, you are correct. There was this certain patch of weeds that was similar to the Bermuda grass. In other words, just as invasive. After getting the inside of our home settled, it was time to work on the outside. On my hands and knees I vigorously attacked the weeds with a small hand trowel getting each one out by the roots. Spring after, spring that was my ritual. Just this Spring I realized that one particular weed was no longer prevalent but another one was in full force. So again, I got down on my hands and knees and got to work ridding them from my yard. When I was finished, my yard was better off. What hidden message is this true story purveying? Sometimes our life can be oh so similar. Yes, we all have weeds in our life. These weeds can be challenges, setbacks, negative beliefs, or naysayers, and the list can go on and on. The solution is when dealing with these weeds of life is to get to the root of it and remove them one by one and eventually you will conquer this round. And when another crop of weeds shows up, deal with them directly before they spread, because now that you know what to do with them by getting to the root of it, it will give you more courage and wisdom the next time a problem crops up. You could say we all need weeds in our life to challenge us to grow. Once you know how to handle the weeds in your yard to make it beautiful--so too will your life be.

Several Months ago some Knights signed up to help out as the "Clean Up Crew" for Christopher Hall after events were held. The Squires Install Their Officers On Tuesday, July 11th, the Columbian Squires welcomed a whole new ranking of officers. The man who took the throne as chief Squire was Kenny Magnuson. Our new deputy Chief, Scott Klar, missed the ceremony; and recently awarded Squire of the Year, Phillip Eyhorn, made Notary. Joey Kissling, who also missed the evening, was made Bursar. The position of Marshall was awarded to Mario Valdez, and last but not least Andreas Farias was made sentry.

A Conversation with Manny

Because of the success of the wine tasting event held last year, our Seminarian, Manuel Cardoza, received the full amount designated by our Council. The $1800 was used for school and supplies.

Manuel Cardoza (his friends call him Manny) is a likable fellow that everyone sees at St. Mark. He is our Council’s favorite seminarian and we support his calling by helping out with financial assistance. We had a chance to talk to him before his summer trip to the Vatican. You can read the extended interview on the web newsletter on our Council’s website. Manny will be returning to St. Mark later this month. When you see him, say hi. I am sure he will have many stories to tell about the places he saw in Italy.

Q. What was the reaction of your family when you wanted to go into the priesthood? A. My siblings were for it, my grandmother was excited, my mom asked if I was sure, and

my dad had his doubts. He wanted me to make money. When he started to see the change in me, he became my biggest supporter.

Q. What is the name of the order you are with here in San Antonio? A. It’s the Oblate School of Theology which is a missionary order. I have done three years

and I have three years to go. Q. How do you keep focused on your vocation? A. There is a lot of seduction in this world from sex, money, and power. I remind myself of

what my role is...a servant of God. And I know I serve the people. Q. What will you be doing after your trip to Italy before returning to St. Mark in August? A. I will be working at my parish in San Bernardino, helping at a Bible summer camp, doing a

summer program at the university, and staying busy to stay out of trouble. I realize that people look to me for many things. Young people are seeking the truth these days and the Truth is right in front of them in the Church.

Q. If you had to say it in a few sentences, what would you tell the people of St Mark? A. Thank you for your graciousness by making me feel at home. I love St. Mark, I love the Knights. If it wasn’t for this community, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I am your humble servant and hope to come back in the future to give back to the people.

B I N G O

Dear Brother Knights and Bingo Volunteers Bingo operations have just closed out the Fiscal Year and I am glad to report we out sold last year exceeding

all expectations. The twelve (12) month period ending June 30, 2006 closed with: - Gross income - $1,317,989 up from $1,218,187 for the same period last year - Cost of Goods Sold were up $991071from $912,336 last year - Profits were up $137,124 from $109,946 for the same period last year

Contributions to the council were $125,000 all going to Broadway Bank for the mortgage on Christopher Hall, with the exception of $14,400 for income taxes for “unrelated business income”.

As you can see, Bingo is BIG BUSINESS. We extend congratulations all bingo Volunteers. These Volunteers provide over 2400 hours to Bingo each fiscal year. Extend a hand or embrace to a Bingo Volunteer when you see them. We owe a large debt of thanks and gratitude for their dedication to Bingo, the Council, and St. Marks. There work brings a direct benefit to the Council and helps complete the goals of the Council.

The Bingo schedule for volunteer workers has been e-mailed to volunteers, is contained in this issue of the Newsletter, and is posted on the web site at www.kofc7613.org at Bingo links. Volunteer names and phone numbers are available on the web page but is password protected for security reasons. Get the password form your team leader or call me at 496-9429.

We still have a serious problem with vacant positions at Bingo. We have 5 vacant positions (4 on Sunday and 1 on Monday). Thanks to Brothers Brian Nelson and Matt Delozier we quickly gained 6 new volunteers, but we still need help.

We have over 40 new 1st Degree Members and a few transfers who are new to the Council. We need your help. Any Knight who does not work Bingo should seriously consider the value of Bingo operations and offer their time and service to the Council. Brother Elroy Tschirhart is contacting all new Knights on a campaign to personally invite you to join the Bingo Team. When you receive his “invitation”, take time to listen to him and the call to become personally involved in the Council’s most important funding program. Remember that your participation makes a direct contribution to pay down the debt on Christopher Hall. This is charity at its finest.

New volunteers must complete the “Texas Application for Registry of Approved Bingo Workers”, which can be found on the web site. You must receive approval from the Texas Lottery Commission, Bingo Division to work Bingo. To work Bingo, workers need to complete the form and fax or mail it to the Texas Lottery Commission. Once approved, you will receive ID Cards and a letter advising you on your responsibilities to the Commission. Then, notify the Bingo Manager, Stephen Rohrbough at 496-9429 so he can add you on the Bingo Schedule and assign you to a Team.

Fraternally,

Stephen W. Rohrbough, Bingo Manager

Dear Brother Knights, St Mark is preparing our new parish directory. In order to adequately schedule the large number of family portraits to be photographed, we need the cooperation of the various ministries and organizations . Remember that if you participate, you will receive an 8 x 10 color family portrait and parish directory free (directories will not be available for purchase). There is no obligation to purchase anything. I use my (old) directory daily to put names and faces together when working with ministries. It would be great if all of the families of the Knights of Columbus would be in the directory so we can know each other and others can know us!. We would greatly appreciate it if K of C families would schedule their portrait sittings during the September sessions, if at all possible, if you haven't already scheduled. You can find the available times and schedule your appointment by clicking on the link below or going to our parish web site, www.stmarkevangelist.com, and using the link there. Please schedule ASAP. www.appointment-plus3.com/ap/stmark1/index.php?page=10 Your cooperation and participation is greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, please call me at 490-4312 or email me at [email protected]. God Bless. Deacon Steve Marques+

Do It Anyway By Mother Teresa People are often unreasonable, illogical, and self-centered; Forgive them anyway. If you are kind, People may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives; Be kind anyway. If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true enemies; Succeed anyway. If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you; Be honest and frank anyway. What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight; Build anyway. If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous; Be happy anyway. The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow; Do good anyway. Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough; Give the world the best you've got any-way. You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and God; It was never between you and them anyway
