Principal’s Message Dear Families, Welcome to the February edition of our monthly newsletter. Thank you for taking the time to read about what is happening at LCPL Nicholas S. Perez Elementary. Two of my favorite events are coming soon: Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day on Saturday, February 25, and Explore UT on Saturday, March 3. I encourage you to join us as we take family field trips to the University of Texas for both of these fun and educational events. Your children will be more excited than ever about preparing for college! Call the school for more information. Our teachers will be holding parent conferences for all of their students in February. The official parent conference day is February 20 th , but your teachers may be scheduling meetings throughout the month. Please plan to attend this very important meeting. Our school goal is to hold conferences with 100% of our parents. In addition, we will be holding special parent workshops that day. Watch for more information. As Valentine’s Day approaches, I once again encourage you to work with your children to make some of their own Valentine’s Day cards – especially the ones that they give to their teachers and adult family members. They will be exercising their creativity, practicing their writing skills, and feeling proud of their own creations. As always, please remember to encourage your children to read a book of their choice EVERY DAY. It is the best way to help them get smarter. Thank you for being Perez Python parents. Have a wonderful February! David Kauffman, Ed.D. Principal Fourth Grade Pythons Perform at the Blanton Museum of Art Did you know we have published authors at Perez Elementary? Many of our very own 4 th grade Perez Pythons performed public readings of their poetry at the Blanton Museum of Art at the University of Texas as part of their collaboration with the Badgerdog Literary Publishing program. Our students did a great job writing and reading their poems. Way to go, Fourth Grade Pythons! Talent Show Perez Pythons will showcase their skills at the Talent Show on Thursday, February 2 at 6:00 p.m. This lively production allows students and their families to perform a variety of acts such as, singing, dancing, juggling, magic tricks, and more. We hope to see you there! Tuitionbased PreKindergarten Do you want your 4yearold child to attend pre kindergarten at Perez Elementary or another AISD school but you do not qualify based on income, home language, or active military service? There are a limited number of spaces available in our prek program for parents paying tuition. Call the school at 8419100 for more information. LCPL Nicholas S.                  Martin  Luther  King,  Jr.  Community  March  This  year  130  Perez  parents,  students,  and  staff  members  participated  in  our  Family  Field  Trip  to  the  Martin  Luther  King,  Jr.  Community  March.    The  group  enjoyed  musical  performances  at  the  capitol  building  before  embarking  on  a  3-‐mile  march  to  Huston-‐Tillotson  University  to  celebrate  Dr.  King’s  legacy  while  uplifting  diversity  and  multi-‐culturalism.    Everyone  who  participated  received  a  complimentary  Perez  t-‐shirt  commemorating  our  participation  in  the  march.    Special  thanks  to  the  ACE  Americorps  volunteers  who  joined  us.    Plan  to  join  us  in  the  march  next  year!                      Perez  Recycles  Remember  that  AISD  now  supports  single-‐stream  recycling  and  food  waste  composting.  At  Perez,  we  recycle  paper,  glass,  plastic,  and  cardboard.  We  compost  food  waste,  paper  towels,  and  pizza  boxes.  From  August  to  December  this  year,  we  diverted  a  total  of  41,399  pounds  of  material  the  landfill  through  recycling  and  composting!  Our  student-‐led  Green  Team  is  exploring  ways  to  make  Perez  even  more  environmentally  friendly.

Volunteers  –  Can  we  get  at  least  3  hours  of  help  from  every  family?  Volunteering  benefits  your  children  and  helps  make  our  school  the  best  it  can  be.  Thank  you  to  all  of  the  family  members  who  have  helped  our  school  by  volunteering  your  time.  If  every  family  contributed  just  three  hours  per  year,  we  would  get  over  180  days  worth  of  assistance  –  the  equivalent  of  a  full-‐time  employee.  Have  you  already  volunteered  at  least  three  hours  this  year?  If  so,  thank  you!  If  not,  please  consider  ways  that  you  can  help  in  the  classroom,  in  the  office,  in  the  library,  in  the  cafeteria,  or  even  at  home.  Call  the  school  for  more  information  on  how  you  can  help.  Be  sure  that  you  sign  in  when  you  volunteer,  as  we  will  soon  be  sending  a  special  thank  you  to  all  of  our  volunteers.  P.S.  Special  thanks  to  all  of  our  families  who  have  volunteered  more  than  3  hours!            Attendance  Did  you  know  that  there  is  a  strong  relationship  between  regular  school  attendance  and  academic  performance?    Kids  who  miss  class,  miss  out  on  learning.    Give  your  children  every  opportunity  to  succeed  by  making  sure  they  attend  school  regularly.
