As a Jesuit institution, Fairfield University has a particu-lar commitment to teaching and learning. In the tradi-tion of Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Jesuits, Fair-field faculty take seriously cura personalis, the teaching and care of the whole person. In this spirit, our activities integrate intellect and affect in the service of others.
In 2003, Fairfield formally founded its Center for Aca-demic Excellence, with a mission to provide faculty de-velopment in teaching excellence, and professional and organizational development across the campus. Through workshops, consultations, writing retreats, and other offerings, the Center encourages delight, innova-tion and scholarship in teaching and learning. Our twelfth Annual Conference celebrates and showcases excellence and innovations in all areas of teaching, fac-ulty support and development, the scholarship of teach-ing and learning, and community-engaged teaching and scholarship.
We see this annual conference as an opportunity to learn from each other, to build connections and collabo-rations and to reflect upon the meaningfulness and im-pact of our work as educators and scholars. Welcome to our beautiful campus, and to our time together as colleagues and friends.
Dr. Mary Deane Sorcinelli Associate Provost for Faculty Development, Professor of Educational Policy, Research, and Administration, and Director of the Center for Teaching and Faculty Develop-ment (CTFD) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

In the context of higher education, collaborations are essential to build bridges, stretch limited resources and address the needs of all learners. Whether partner-ships between faculty, students, professional staff, communities, all foster communities of practice. The 2013 conference theme is “Collaborations for Empow-erment & Learning” and will offer strands on collabora-tive teaching & learning, technology, the scholarship of teaching & learning, and community-engaged scholar-ship. Featured interactive presentations include: Dr. Mary Deane Sorcinelli on mutual mentoring; Dr. Katie Linder on teaching & learning collaborations in higher education; and journal editors Dr. Cathy Burack and Dr. Cathy Jordan on community-engaged scholarship and advice on getting your community-engaged scholarship published.
