Solving The Infrequent Supply of Water Using

Geomatic Engineering: Adenta Community

Presentation by Henry Kwabena Asante

Adenta Adenta is located 15km of the city centre and has a

population of 3000 families, with an average of 6 person in each household (Uusitalo,2002).

At the time of the 2000 census, there were 18 communities in this area, with a population of 62,715. Based on an estimated growth rate of 2.6% the current population is 79,014.

Adenta is outside the second supply boundaries but political pressure forced the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) to build pipelines in the area.

The water provided by GWCL comes from Kpong Water Works. However, most residents of Adenta are not connected to the

network as the piping was designed for a sixth of the actual population.

Most families in Adenta rely on water tankers, vendors and related services. (Acolor, 2000)

Solution Mr Mac-Kenneth Attah, he pointed out that the main reason

for poor water supply was a lack of investment in the development of infrastructure to curb this problem.

With the application of GIS, the situation can be improved tremendously.

GIS is computer software that links geographic information (where things are) with descriptive information (what things are). Unlike a flat paper map where what you see is what you get, GIS can represent many layers of different information.

I suggest that the issue be handled as an internal agenda by the local municipal assembly using GIS.

The local assembly could use GIS to generate its own funds internally, without having to be fully dependent on the central government.
