LENT: Turn back to God! This is about the earliest for Lent to begin. This Wednesday is Ash Wednesday. Please join us to start the 40 days of Lent with this service of ashes. Each year our whole church sets aside this time to turn back to God. We do three things during lent. We pray, we sacrifice or ‘fast’ and we do good works. Pick up the booklet we are providing for Lent. You can find many activities for Lent in our parish program. The point of the forty days of Lent is to turn back to God. Prayer comes in many forms. Come to Mass during the week; take time to visit the Lord in Church; pray a rosary each day; read a psalm from the Bible each day; come to confess your sins; set time apart in your day for morning prayer, evening prayer. Sacrifice or give up something you like. As children we ‘gave up sweets, candy or desserts; what is something you like, food? Internet? Sacrifices connect with the suffering of Christ; use the Rice Bowl daily to save money for the hungry people in the world. Works of Mercy open our hearts. Visit the sick in your family; feed people who are hungry; Lis-ten to the lonely; welcome the stranger; teach the children their faith; assist people who are seeking to believe in God. Take on one of these activities so that you can begin to turn back to God.
Msgr. Frank Kelley
Ash Wednesday is this Wednesday, February 10. Ashes will be distributed at Masses at 8:30 am and 7:30 pm and at a service at 3 pm. All services will be held in the lower church.

ALL VOLUNTEERS
Volunteers who are in contact with children or the elderly are required to complete a CORI form each year. If you have not done so already please come to the rectory office to fill out the form. Please remember to bring a government issued photo ID and your social security number which will be necessary to complete the CORI form.
Charitable Contributions and Federal Tax Laws Due to changes in the federal tax laws for charitable contributions, parishioners who itemize deductions on Schedule A of their tax returns will not be able to deduct contributions to Sacred Heart Parish without a bank record or a parish contribu-tion statement. If you take your donations to the parish as a tax deduction, then we ask that you use the envelope system or join in the direct deposit program ParishPay which we offer. The parish is not able to track a cash contribution that is not placed in a par-ish envelope. Consult your tax advisor with questions. If you need a statement of your donations for 2015, please contact the rectory office.

Reflection on Luke 5:1-11 Failure is painful. Failure cuts right through my self-confidence. Once I’ve failed at something, I’m reluctant to try again. Can you recall a time when you experienced fail-ure? How did it make you feel? How did you react? Simon Peter, in today’s Gospel, is familiar with failure. When Jesus arrives, Simon is washing his nets after a long, hard night spent fishing and with no fish to show for it. I expect he wants little more than sleep and a good meal. How many nights like this has he experienced? Is he anx-ious about his future, about having enough to get by? Jesus arrives, interrupting these thoughts. After using Simon Peter’s boat to address the crowds, Jesus asks Simon to do again what he’d been doing, unsuccess-fully, all night. I hear exhaustion, skepticism, and embar-rassment in Simon's response. “I’ve already tried, but be-cause you asked, I’ll try again.” To his shock, the nets fill with fish. Immediately his situation is reversed. Instead of having no fish, Simon Peter has so many fish that his boat is in danger of sinking. Yet the greatest surprise is still to come! Jesus uses this miraculous demonstration to invite Simon to join his mission. This Gospel story is most familiar for its conclusion: Simon leaves everything and becomes Jesus’ disciple. But before he could hear this unexpected call, he had to be willing to face his failure and try again, at Jesus’ request. As we look ahead to the beginning of Lent, it is an appro-priate time to think about the ways in which God is calling us to follow Jesus more closely. We may perceive this invi-tation at a time when we feel close to God and are hopeful about the direction in which we are heading. Yet the oppo-site is also possible. God’s invitation may be experienced when we are at a low point: tired, frustrated, and embar-rassed. It may feel like God is asking us to do something pointless. In situations like that, we are faced with two options: We can refuse, saying, “I know better than you do, God.” Or we can say, as Simon did, “I’m hesitant about this, God, but I trust you and at your command I’ll try again.” Do we believe that God can do something new with us,
something unexpected? Do we believe that God can take
our failures and turn them upside down to reveal our truest
calling? Lara Erikson
ANOINTING OF THE SICK “Heal the sick!” Mt 10:8 “Is any among you sick? Let him call the presbyters of the church and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.” Jas 5:14
From ancient times the Church has anointed the sick with blessed oil. Over the centuries the anointing of the sick was reserved more and more exclusively for those at the point of death. The Second Vatican Council urged that the Sacra-ment be renewed to include prayer for healing as well as for the remission of sin.
Today the Sacrament of the Sick is given to those who are seriously ill, facing surgery or in danger of death from sick-ness or old age by anointing them on the forehead and hands with blessed oil. ♦ The Sacrament is a gift of the Holy Spirit one of
strengthening, peace and courage to overcome the diffi-culties that go with the illness and frailties of old age.
♦ The Sacrament gives us the strength and gift of uniting oneself more closely to Christ’s Passion.
♦ The Sacrament prepares us for the final journey; it com-
pletes our conformity to the death and resurrection of Christ, just as Baptism began it. Priests are the ministers of the Anointing of the Sick.
VIATICUM “Last Rites” Viaticum is a Latin word which means food for a journey. The church offers those who are about to leave this life the Eucharist as Viaticum. Viaticum is administered by an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion, a deacon or a priest.
We offer this as a reminder to all. Anyone can receive the Sacrament of the sick before going to hospital for a proce3e-dure. This can be done at Mass, or after Mass or at home. You need not wait until the last moments. Our sacraments are to be comfort and courage for those who are ill. If you have more questions please let us know, Msgr. Frank Kelley.

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 7, 2016
Misericordiae Vultus DEL SANTO PADRE FRANCISCO

Hungering for the Journey: the CRS Rice Bowl Program Starting next Sunday, we will join nearly 14,000 Catholic communities across the United States in a Lenten journey of Christian solidarity with people in need around the world. Out of 7 billion of God’s children on earth, about 2 billion are the most poor and vulnerable living on $3.00 a day, usually hungry or malnourished. Through Catholic Relief Services, the Church serves them. The Lenten Rice Bowl program is an opportunity for us to be part of that effort.
The Rice Bowls and Calendars will be blessed and distributed next Sun-day at all the Masses; and will be collected on Palm Sunday. We can use
our CRS Rice Bowl and Lenten calendar to help guide our prayer, fasting and almsgiving this season. Stories of Hope are featured on the calendar, along with simple recipes from each highlighted country.
Our liturgies, education programs and social and prayerful gatherings will also have further opportunities to learn these Stories of Hope.
