My name is Dr. Jennifer Daniels. On this tape we will talk about chronic pain, what it is, what causes it and what you can do about this pain. First, I’d like to tell you a little bit about myself. I’m a retired physician. I’ve practiced for ten years, and I was board certified for family practice and my interest in natural healing [AR: add “started”?] when I became ill myself and found that becoming vegetarian totally cured my condition. As I practiced medicine I would often recommend vegetarianism to people and they would frequently give me firm reasons why they would not do that. And then I developed an interest in finding additional herbs and methods that could be of assistance to people to help them heal. So I’d like to share with you what I’ve learned about chronic pain during my ten years of medical practice.

In the United States, we’re told that chronic pain is any pain that you happen to have and that’s been around for several months and that’s present throughout the day. The cause of chronic pain can vary, is usually felt to be trauma of some sort or unknown, and the treatment for chronic pain is felt to be as much pain medicine as is needed to control the pain. The cure; it is generally believed that there is no cure for chronic pain. Sometimes surgery is attempted and sometimes it does give relief, however temporary.

When I entered practice, I was confronted with this situation and it was very frustrating to have people who were constantly suffering, constantly in pain and constantly complaining. So I decided I would take a look at this as to what is really going on. At first, I would simply offer people something they could do in addition to taking their narcotic. For example, maybe they would want to drink a little bit of water, or maybe they would want to eat some

Page 2: CHRONIC PAIN - Vitality Capsulesvitalitycapsules.com/.../05/Disk-11-Chronic-Pain.pdf · chronic pain can vary, is usually felt to be trauma of some sort or unknown, and the treatment

vegetables. And over a ten-year period, I realized what was causing people’s pain and devised a series of things they could do that would actually relieve the pain.

First of all, I would like to say the model that I learned in medical school, which is that pain, chronic pain comes, stays and is incurable and can only be addressed with pain medications (sometimes physical therapy) simply was not useful. So I developed my own model. I’d like to share that with you.

First of all, with chronic pain, everyone that’s in chronic pain always has a story. They always have a story of how the pain came about. And a story is very firm. I’ll give you an example: “I was fine until that car accident, and I’ve had this pain ever since.” Well, this story is a very firm story, that tells me that that person’s pain will never go away. Why? Because the pain was caused by an incident that happened in the past and cannot be changed.

Another story: “I worked at that job, and I reached over for that object (whatever it was) and that caused my pain.” Again, another story for chronic pain. Because this story says what? That this pain was caused by an event in the past, an event that, because it’s in the past, cannot be changed, hence the pain will never go away.

Let me tell you a story about pain that can go away. “I have this pain, and I wasn’t born with this pain, and I know I don’t need to be having this pain. I’m ready to get rid of this pain.” Now that’s a pain that can and most likely will go away. Same pain, different story.

I’d like to mention a special case, which is low back pain. Low back pain is really neat because there’s all kinds of low back pain. My favorite study is if you take 100 people who have absolutely no pain and you do an MRI scan of their lower back area, you will find that about 30 of them have a herniated disc. But these people all have no pain. Then, you look at people with chronic pain and they’ll say to you “I have chronic pain because of my herniated disc and you can’t make a herniated disc go away and that’s why I have my pain.” So we need to realize that anyone who has pain, there are other people in this earth who have the same pain you have, in the same place but haven’t experienced whatever your story is. So in order to cure pain, you first have to change the story. You’ve got to change the story to something that goes a little like this: “I happen to have pain. The pain happens to be here right now. But it doesn’t have to be here forever. I’m ready for the pain to leave.” So that’s a very simple revision to the story.

It wasn’t until people came to my office; I was ready to hear the “I have a herniated disc” story and to understand the pain was incurable. But people started coming to me: “Doctor, I’ve had this pain for ten years. It’s horrible, it’s awful and I prayed about this pain and God told me to come see you and this pain could go away, and you could help.” Now how’s that for a healing story.

So what you need to do if you have chronic pain is just change your story a little bit. Yes you have pain, yes the pain is there. But change the story that allows for a future without pain. And don’t assign any cause or reason for your pain because truthfully, any medical doctor can tell you, even a neurologist or a neuroscientist, that they don’t know what causes pain, they don’t even understand it. So why should we pretend to. So just accept

Page 3: CHRONIC PAIN - Vitality Capsulesvitalitycapsules.com/.../05/Disk-11-Chronic-Pain.pdf · chronic pain can vary, is usually felt to be trauma of some sort or unknown, and the treatment

that 1) the pain is there and 2) at some point in the future doesn’t need to be there anymore; that that pain is not a necessary and permanent part of you. This pain is simply something exists. It did not exist in some point in the past. It came into existence and that in the future it will stop existing. And so that mindset is very important. So you’ve got to change the story.

The next thing is: the “incident”; whatever the incident is that happened in your life, whether it was a car accident and that other driver was intoxicated, whether it was your employer and you know he didn’t really care about you, or whatever the event was; you need to let go of it. You need to say “Yes, that event happened. Yes I have pain, but just because that event happened it doesn’t mean I have to have the pain forever and forever.” So that you need to realize and to accept. So you have to somehow let go of that incident and somehow neutralize it, [AR: say more about how to neutralize it?] so that when that incident comes to mind, it doesn’t worsen your pain, or make you really think: “pain.” Those are simple.

The next thing that happens is that you need to know that your body is designed to “forget” pain. Your body is designed so that when something that happens that’s painful, your body perceives the pain, it releases neurotransmitters that tell your brain, “Hey, there’s pain here!” But then these neurotransmitters are “soaked up” and removed, they’re soaked up by the very neuron released them, so that the pain signal is stopped as soon as it’s released. So the only way to get a pain signal to be continuous and steady is there needs to be ongoing stimulation and ongoing activity of some type to create the pain. What does that mean? That means the car accident may have caused the pain ten years ago, but the car accident is not what’s caused the pain today. The car accident is not the reason why you still have pain today.

Later on, I’ll share with you an incident with my mother who had a very severe car accident, had pain for 15 years, severe pain, and went to surgeons, neurologists and everything for 15 years. And one day, the pain finally went away. So I’ll tell you later on how that came to be.

So the first thing to understand is that what makes it perpetual is there’s something you’re doing every single day that’s making the pain persist and stay with you. And that’s an important thing to understand. But it’s also empowering. That means that you can get rid of that pain by just changing those few things that you are doing every day.

So first thing, a major thing that makes pain perpetual, that makes it chronic, that makes it stay, is drugs. There’s a list of drugs, about 5 drugs I’d like to talk about that make pain chronic. The first drug I’d like to talk about is alcohol. This is an interesting drug because it dulls the perception of pain. And we have the stories about the old Wild West where they’d give the person some alcohol and a bullet to bite on and the person’s perception of the pain or surgery would be less. Many people, even in modern times, do take alcohol, either to relieve the pain or just because they consume alcohol. Well it turns out that one major cause of pain is your body’s storing irritating chemicals at the injury site. And the organ in charge of removing these chemicals is the liver. Alcohol slows up and in some cases can even halt the liver and stop it from removing these chemicals. And when the liver works at

Page 4: CHRONIC PAIN - Vitality Capsulesvitalitycapsules.com/.../05/Disk-11-Chronic-Pain.pdf · chronic pain can vary, is usually felt to be trauma of some sort or unknown, and the treatment

a slower rate, these chemicals accumulate, and the pain grows and the pain stays and it doesn’t go away. So if you have chronic pain and you consume alcohol in however a miniscule amount, even one drink a week; that one drink is contributing to your pain being chronic. So what can you do? Well it turns out that most alcohol consumption is prompted by B vitamin deficiency. So try some B Complex 50, available your health food store. Take one or two a day. And this will help cut the craving for alcohol and you’ll find you can taper off the alcohol very nicely.

Another vitamin to take is magnesium oxide. It usually comes in 400 mg. One or two [AR: per day? With food?], will do. So take these two and then over time, well about a week or two, you’ll find you can do very nicely without the alcohol. Now alcohol is also, the cravings are created by eating foods that have B vitamins removed, i.e., processed foods. So all of your noodles, white flour, white rice, sugar, sugary drinks or anything made with these things will increase your craving or desire for alcohol. So cut all of these things out. For the carbohydrates you can use brown rice, and for the sweet beverages you can use water with stevia and some tamarind. Nice sour fruit, it will give you the impression of lemonade, so you can use lemon juice and stevia or tamarind and stevia. So this pretty much helps, that’s the alcohol; major pain-causing drug.

Next major pain-causing drug is cigarettes. Cigarettes also stop the functioning of the liver. So it slows up the liver, it slows up the rate at which chemicals are removed from the body and [inaudible word or phrase] chemicals gathered together in one spot that cause the pain. So how do you quit cigarettes? The B vitamins help, so do take the B vitamins. There are homeopathic “quit smoking” pills you can take. They come in a bottle and they are rather large size. But you take two four times a day. [AR: with food?] And then there’s licorice root. And licorice root helps support the adrenal glands and makes it easier to quit cigarettes. Cigarettes are awfully difficult to quit. So you’ve got your licorice root, your homeopathic “quit smoking” pill and your B vitamins. [AR: Are homeopathic “quit smoking” pill and B vitamins the same thing?]

The next chemical is narcotic pain killers. Narcotic pain killers are a major cause of chronic pain. How does this work? Well, you’ll take your narcotic, let’s say Tylenol No. 3 or better yet morphine. It dulls your brain [_________for search of] the pain, so you don’t feel or you’re not aware of the pain. Meanwhile, it causes constipation. It causes your bowels to tighten up and not let go of the very chemicals that cause your pain. So these chemicals accumulate because basically you’ve created a bottleneck that can’t get out, that can’t leave the body, and so when the pain medicine wears off, the pain comes back even worse than it was before you took the pain medicine. And this becomes a cycle, especially when you take the pain medicine on a regular basis like three times a day, every day. What happens is that those chemicals accumulate and accumulate and accumulate and the dose has to be higher and higher because the chemicals causing the pain are becoming more and more.

Now how do you handle this one? Should you suffer with pain? No. But you should definitely make sure your bowels are moving even though you’re taking this medication. And how do you do that? Well, you increase your water intake, drink more water, distilled water. One quart per 60 pounds of body weight is a place to start, but feel free to go up from there. So water is very important. Next, Dr. Daniels’ Vitality Capsules. Take one with

Page 5: CHRONIC PAIN - Vitality Capsulesvitalitycapsules.com/.../05/Disk-11-Chronic-Pain.pdf · chronic pain can vary, is usually felt to be trauma of some sort or unknown, and the treatment

food the first day, two with food the third day [AR: should this be “second day”?] and so on and build up until you are having three bowel movements a day. This gets those chemicals moving out of the body at a faster rate, and you can actually feel your pain decline, feel your pain melt away and lessen. So the narcotics are a major pain-causing chemical. Am I saying you should never take them? No. I am saying if you do take them, then take them sparingly. Take enough to take the edge off your pain, but not so much that you can get the constipation that can cause pain.

I’d like to tell you the story of a patient of mine who had surgery. She was a very cheerful person, but she had some [_______________ - inaudible word or phrase] arthritis, and it was very painful in her hip, and she made the decision to get her hip replaced. And she said, “Now Doctor, are you gonna come seem me in the hospital?” I said “Sure, I’ll come see you.”

I was a family practice physician, and I wasn’t too fond of the post-operative ward, but I told her I would see her, so I decided to go to the hospital. So I go to the hospital and see this usually cheerful lady just whimpering and crying and her family all huddled around her and I said, “Oh my goodness! You’re not having a very good day, are you?” She said, “No, I’m not!” And so I said, “Well, what’s the matter?” She says, “Oh, I just hurt, I hurt all over, I hurt everywhere!” And so I said, “Exactly where?” And she just waved her hands in front like just in general. And so I took a look at her and I said “Hmm.” And I realized that her stomach was bloated, this was usually a very slender lady. I said “Well, does your tummy hurt?” She said, “Oh, yes, yes!” I said, “Well, I’ll tell you what you do. I don’t feel like writing the extra orders in chart. I’m not a surgeon anyway. Refuse your narcotic pain killer. Just don’t ask for it and if it’s offered, say “˜No, thank you.’ Then, take your milk of magnesia, in fact ask for an extra dose; just do those two things, and if you feel like you can drink some water, have some water.” And so I left and I got a call from her family later on in the evening, telling me that her pain was much, much better. And so her pain went away and she got out of the hospital and she did fine. But that’s a simple case where this person had pain (of course she had pain from her surgery). But the dose of narcotic she had received caused her another even more severe pain. And what I’m suggesting is that could be happening to other people who have chronic pain and are taking narcotics. So the thing to do then is to get those bowels moving and reduce the narcotic dose as much as you are able. Now it might be that you’re already extremely constipated, in which case you may want to consider colonics. This means that you go someplace to a specialist who has a nice machine that puts water into your rectum and helps flush out all of that stool. And many people with chronic pain find this is instantly a great benefit and gives them great relief. Now this is expensive, so you may want to eventually start figuring out how to do your own enemas or try Dr. Daniel’s Vitality Capsules at VitalityCapsules.com. Now that’s another drug that causes pain. [AR: move this sentence so it doesn’t sound like Vitality Capsules are a drug that causes pain]

The next pain-causing drug is the non-steroidal anti-inflammatories. What are these drugs? These are drugs that are not steroids but they reduce inflammation by inhibiting something called the cyclo-oxygenase pathway. They are also a direct irritant to the intestines and to the stomach. So these drugs may minimize or reduce the initial pain, but then cause a secondary pain in the intestines or an additional pain anywhere throughout

Page 6: CHRONIC PAIN - Vitality Capsulesvitalitycapsules.com/.../05/Disk-11-Chronic-Pain.pdf · chronic pain can vary, is usually felt to be trauma of some sort or unknown, and the treatment

the body. How is this? The cyclo-oxygenase pathway is a pathway that creates building blocks for chemicals that are very necessary to the maintenance of organs throughout the body, to the maintenance of the heart, the muscles, the kidneys. So then taking these medications in the chronic steady doses often used for chronic pain, causes pain throughout the body and elsewhere in the body. The more you take, the more mysterious difficulties you have.

So how does one handle this? Well, one could simply reduce the dose of the non-steroidal. That’s one option. Another option is to substitute another type of pain killer. What I’ve found works very well for people and gives them tremendous relief as comparable to the relief of a non-steroidal is turmeric. Yup. That’s t-u-r-m-e-r-i-c. This is a spice that’s common in many households. Turmeric helps relieve pain by removing pain-causing chemicals from the site of the pain and from the blood and bringing them to the liver for disposal. What’s the dose of turmeric? I usually recommend about a tablespoon once or twice a day, and really the dose at which turmeric is unsafe is 2 pounds a day. So you’re very, very safe taking as much turmeric as you like, and the effect you can expect would be a reduction in the chemicals circulating in your blood. Milk thistle also works along with turmeric, and three capsules twice a day encourages the liver to soak up these chemicals and put them out into the gall bladder, then to the liver, and finally to the toilet.

So non-steroidal anti-inflammatories are another pain-causing drug. What are these drugs? Ibuprofin, also known as Motrin, Advil, Nuprin, Naproxen and of course the famous non-steroidal, Vioxx and Celebrex. So these are more pain-causing drugs. I have to say I was actually stunned when I entered practice and found that the more of these drugs I gave, the less effective they were, and the more pain that people h ad. So those are the non-steroidal; substitution, turmeric and milk thistle, and that seems to work pretty well.

Now, we talked about water before and I’d like to emphasize again. You need to drink distilled water, one quart per 60 pounds of body weight. What does this do? This dilutes the pain-causing chemicals so that their concentration is not as high and the pain is not as intense.

The next pain-causing drug is acetaminophen. This is often sold under the name of Tylenol. It turns out that acetaminophen works by interfering with the addition of another phosphate from adenosine diphosphate to adenosine triphosphate. This occurs in the mitochondria. What does this mean? Well, it means that Tylenol interferes with ability of living organisms to convert energy into heat or work. And it turns out that most pain in the body is caused by parasites, caused by parasites nibbling away at the body, by parasites putting out chemicals they have manufactured that are irritating to the body. And so what Tylenol is that it interferes with that energy-producing system in the parasites, lowers or wipes out their metabolic activity. And this is the mechanism by which it relieves pain. However, it also does the same thing to the liver of the human being. And what does that do? You got it. It slows the rate at which chemicals are removed from the body. So if you’re using a high dose of Tylenol, then its effect on the liver is much stronger and then using that drug guarantees that you’ll need it again the next day.

Page 7: CHRONIC PAIN - Vitality Capsulesvitalitycapsules.com/.../05/Disk-11-Chronic-Pain.pdf · chronic pain can vary, is usually felt to be trauma of some sort or unknown, and the treatment

Now the other thing about acetaminophen or Tylenol is that it’s toxic to the liver, and every year people die from taking acetaminophen. People need liver transplants from taking acetaminophen and it turns out that there is no dose of Tylenol that is non-lethal. So at whatever dose of Tylenol, however small, there is a human being somewhere on this planet that died from that dose of that Tylenol. So, it’s a bit of a dicey thing to take. So as you reduce your Tylenol again, same things are substituted for your non-steroidal: the turmeric, the milk thistle, water are all very helpful here as well.

The final drug that causes chronic pain, or helps chronic pain become chronic, is prednisone. Now this is really curious because prednisone is often used for many chronic conditions and it can be very, very helpful and it can give a lot of relief. But used chronically over long periods of time, prednisone destroys or erodes the bones. And then you have pain from the bones which compound the original chronic pain that one started with. So it’s important with any and all these pain relievers to use the lowest dose compatible with your comfort and take them for the briefest amount of time. The chronic pain is characterized by use, daily use of any or all of these drugs.

Now I’ve said a lot about chemicals and getting rid of them and parasites. Well, how do these things get in the body anyway and how does it get to where they cause pain? Because we’ve all, I mean nobody’s perfect, but not everybody has pain.

Well, this is the way it works. Just by living, eating, sleeping, breathing, we all produce in our bodies chemicals that have the ability to cause pain. But we have kidneys, we have a liver, we have skin, we have lungs, and these organs all excrete chemicals that would cause pain if they remained in our body. When you have an injury of any kind, whether it’s a car accident, a fall, bumping up against something, the body says “Ah! Repairs are needed!” This sends a chemical signal: “Calling all spare parts! Calling all spare parts!” And what happens? Different parts of the body say, “You know what? Don’t need these chemicals, I’ll send them. I don’t need these parasites, I’ll send them.” So literally the body’s waste products begin to accumulate at that site. And as they accumulate there, the injury site does get some useful spare parts, maybe if you’re in good nutritional shape (we hope so) some vitamins will be sent, and some other nutrients, so that the repairs can be made. So the injury site receives all this input from all around the body, all these spare parts, all these waste products that aren’t really usable, and it starts making repairs. In a person who is in excellent health, who is well hydrated, first of all there isn’t that much waste laying around anyway, and second of all the site of injury (which is making repairs) sends all the waste products down the river to the liver and says “Nah, you gotta leave the body; don’t need you right here.”

But in a person who is nutritionally compromised, or a person who has so many waste products that their body cannot dispose of them, these waste products, parasites, chemicals are all deposited in this site of injury, and you develop all kinds of problems at the injury site. You can develop chronic pain, some people can develop a keloid -- all kinds of things at this injury site. So really, when a person has chronic pain, then they have an injury site that’s 1) not fixing itself properly for lack of proper building supplies, or in the absence of any injury they simply have so many chemicals accumulating in their body that cannot be disposed of that they have pain, and the pain becomes chronic, because the disposal

Page 8: CHRONIC PAIN - Vitality Capsulesvitalitycapsules.com/.../05/Disk-11-Chronic-Pain.pdf · chronic pain can vary, is usually felt to be trauma of some sort or unknown, and the treatment

situation is not fixed or remedied, 1), and 2) chemicals continue to enter the body at a rather fast rate, a rate faster than the body can remove.

So, how do you do this? How do you get rid of this? How do reverse this situation? First, water, which we’ve already talked about, is very powerful; it dilutes these chemicals. And if you’re in pain, just try this experiment; take one pint of water and drink it. Wait about 15 minutes and drink another pint of water. And see what happens with your pain. If your pain decreases in severity, then you’ve kind of got confirmation of this little theory. If it doesn’t decrease in severity, it might mean that you need to clean out your intestines first. So first thing is water. Type of water? Distilled water. Next thing is stop putting the chemicals in.

When I first started practicing medicine, I was able to get people pain free, just by asking them to eat vegetables. Then in 1994, I asked somebody to eat vegetables and their pain didn’t go away. I couldn’t believe it! And then I realized that there is something wrong with the food. So it turns out there’s a lot of chemicals in our food here in the States. So you do have to eat organic food. As much as possible, switch to 100% organic food. Why? Because organic food does not have the pesticides and the herbicides that regular food has. And as such, it will not contribute to your chronic pain, and because of the fiber in this food, will actually remove chemicals that are causing your pain. And so this is a nice little bonus, that the organic whole food will not only lessen the cause of your pain, but it won’t add to the pain. So that’s very good. Now what’s organic? The organic I’m talking about is produce. We’re talking about green beans, celery, carrots, beets, cabbage, broccoli; any kind of organic vegetable that’s available to you.

The next thing is meat. The role of meat in causing pain is monumental. So you do need to cut your meat out while you’re trying to fix your pain or get rid of your pain. And meat is hazardous for two reasons. First of all, the high level of parasites in the domestic [AR: Perhaps in footnote, possibly work in “U.S.”; make it absolutely clear; summarize how European meat is different; and cite longevity and healthy longevity comparative statistics (and data sources) in clean-meat real democracies?] meats means that these meats contain chemicals that contribute to your pain. [AR: Do parasites create chemicals or coexist with (or are caused or exacerbated by) chemicals from meat animals fed nonorganic grain and fed corn rather than the grass they are designed to digest?] So your body has a difficult time when you eat the meat, to remove those pain-causing chemicals before they enter the bloodstream and can circulate around the body. So that’s one way in which the meat adds to pain. The next way is parasites. And the parasites are living organisms that are in the flesh of the animal that you ate. And these organisms often are not killed by cooking. Why? Because many of them different life forms. They have a cyst stage that can survive high temperatures and thorough cooking. So, it’s important simply to avoid meat at all while you’re trying to heal your chronic pain.

Now what do you eat instead of meat? Instead of meat you can eat brown rice, quinoa, amaranth or millet with stir-fried vegetables on top. [AR: address fear of protein shortage; is standard nutritionists’ recommendation of 50-60 grams a day off? Discuss usable protein in vegetables versus meat?] And what kind of spices can you use? You can use turmeric, which helps reduce pain; oregano, which helps reduce pain; thyme, bay leaf, cloves -- all of

Page 9: CHRONIC PAIN - Vitality Capsulesvitalitycapsules.com/.../05/Disk-11-Chronic-Pain.pdf · chronic pain can vary, is usually felt to be trauma of some sort or unknown, and the treatment

these reduce pain. And you can use these spices on your foods to give yourself even more benefit. [AR: is it worth it to try to get organic spices? Is freshness a factor? Fresh versus dried?]

Another thing you can do is cleansing, so, so very important. What this means is you need to remove these chemicals at a pretty good rate. And how do you remove them? You can remove these chemicals, pain-causing chemicals, by having more bowel movements, by doing enemas, by having colonics. Many people, especially when they’re starting out, have difficulty making lifestyle changes, but they need to get results a little bit sooner. And for these I would recommend Dr. Daniel’s Vitality Capsules. Take one with food the first day, two with food the second day, three with food the third day, and continue to increase by one capsule each day until you have three bowel movements a day. And you can order Vitality Capsules online at VitalityCapsultes.com. Many people have found that these capsules have been just what they needed to help themselves going.

Colonics is another thing that can help. And this means you go to a colonics place and they would actually put fluid into your rectum to help flush out the stool, and that’s another option. And then lastly, you can do your own enemas at home. And you simply use one quart of distilled water heated to about 103 to 105 degrees, remove from the fire, add a full dropper of lobelia tincture (my favorite brand is Herb Pharm). Once you’ve added the lobelia, you pour the mixture into the old-fashioned pink enema bag, lay on your left side, insert the tube into your rectum and let the water flow. As soon as you feel like you’re going to use the bathroom, clamp off the tube, get up and use the bathroom. Then lay back down and repeat the process. Keep repeating the process, back and forth until the bag is empty and your enema will be done. So these are some things that can be of great help in handling chronic pain. I’d like to mention just a couple of herbs and creams that are very nice. Castor oil is fantastic. And the way to use this is apply castor oil from the waist down (you can do this at bedtime, because it’s kind of greasy), about two days in a row. [AR: From the waist all the way down to the toes, front and back?] Then the third day, apply castor oil from neck to toe or even head to toe.

I had one patient who was an elderly lady, and she’d had arthritis for decades. And she became my patient, and out of respect for her and her ways, I just refilled her medicines. And finally one day she said “You know Doc, I’m sick of this pain, I just gotta get rid of this back pain, I just can’t take it anymore!” And I said “Oh, well, how about some castor oil?” She said “Castor oil!” I said “Yes, castor oil. You just apply from the waist down for a couple of nights then from head to toe.”

Well, she did just as I told her. She came back about oh, five days later and she danced a little dance for me just to show me how her back pain was gone. So applying castor oil works wonders. The only caveat I would say with the castor oil is you do need to make sure you’re drinking water, because what happens as the water flushes the pain-causing chemicals out of the area, such as the low back, and gives you your relief. The other caveat for castor oil is that it is extremely powerful. [AR: Say why; say what’s in it?] So be sure to apply it from waist to toe for two nights and then head to toe. So castor oil is something that works very well.

Another thing that works great is Vicks Vapor Rub or Tiger Balm. And you simply take this and apply it generously about three times a day. Either one will do. The only thing I can say about Vicks Vapor Rub is it’s been my experience that it’s safe to apply it over about, oh, 20% of the body surface area at a time. I wouldn’t do any more than 20%. So Vicks Vapor Rub is outstanding for relieving pain.

I’ll tell you a little story about that. I was working for a detention center for adolescents. And we have this one girl come in and she was in severe pain because her boyfriend stole this car, she happened to be a passenger. He ultimately crashed the car. So no broken bones or anything, but severe pain. And by the time she reached the detention center it had been a couple of days, she’d been to the emergency room a couple of times and nothing was really working and she was absolutely miserable. And it was clear that this pain was settling in very nicely and would probably last the rest of her life. So I said to her, “Well you know, I see you’ve got this pain. It seems to be just about everywhere. How about you drink water while you’re here and don’t drink any of the other fancy beverages that we have for you; just drink water. And we’ll apply Vicks Vapor Rub to your back three times a day.” Well it took about a day. And she was pain free. And she was so thrilled and excited with her relief that she told all of the other inmates, and the nurse had a list of people for me to see who were having pain and wanted that fancy pain killer -- Vicks Vapor Rub -- to relieve their pain. So these are a couple of things you can do to help get yourself out of pain.

Now remember you’ve got to start with changing that story. So first you have to let your mind understand and accept that your pain can be cured. Minimize any drugs you may be taking that perpetuate your pain. Switch over to herbs that don’t perpetuate your pain. Change your diet, do some enemas and just prepare to enjoy the rest of your life.

I’d like to share with you, as I promised, the story of my mother’s chronic pain. Her chronic pain lasted about 30 years in her thumb. She’d had surgery for an ingrown thumbnail and the pain plagued her ever since. And the pain was so severe that when it was touched it would cause her to fall to the ground. And so throughout my childhood we spent our time avoiding touching Mom’s thumb. Then, about 15 years later, she was in a car accident, where a drunk driver crossed the median, hitting her head on and causing many fractures. She was in the hospital, ultimately after she was discharged and many years later, she had severe headaches and face pain, severe pain in her right knee and severe pain in her right hip. They took the bone [AR: from where?] to graft the knee. Her face pain bothered her the most, and was so severe that she often wished that she were dead. And she could only spend maybe two hours [AR: a day?] up and about.

Now she promised me that she would work for me as my receptionist for minimum wage, once I opened my medical practice. And so as the time came close for me to open my practice, I realized she was not in good enough health to work at the front desk. So I used about $500 per month in medications and got her where her pain was bearable. It was basically antibiotics and antifungals that took away her pain. However she had to stop taking these due to side effects and ultimately today her pain is controlled with no medications at all. She watches her diet, eating mostly organics. She does eat meat about two times a week, and she’s switched to drinking distilled water. And she now uses a

[_____________- inaudible word or phrase; Neti pot? if so, say what it is and add a sentence about how to use it and why it helps] with salt water to wash out her sinuses and her headache is absolutely gone. She applies turpentine to her thumb, oh, about once a week maybe, and she takes charcoal and clay maybe once a week. [AR: Give sources and doses and say why it helps?] Now, with this regimen, she is pain free. She is now able to go up and down stairs. Now I share this with you to let you know that in order to get rid of chronic pain, one does not need to do everything all the time every day. And what I’ve given you on this CD is a list of options and choices that you can choose from, and it’s my sincere belief that you’ll be able to choose enough of them that it will make a substantial difference in your quality of life so that you can benefit and minimize your pain. Thank you.

Another natural therapy for chronic pain is turpentine. Turpentine is extremely effective for pain of any type and especially chronic pain. Turpentine is the oil of the spruce tree. Thus it is a naturally occurring substance. It was in great use in the 1800s, when it was used to cure just about anything and everything. Turpentine is most famous as a deworming agent. In other words, it kills worms. It’s been my observation that turpentine kills bacteria, worms and yeast, and it’s an all-around helpful agent.

In chronic pain, one must first used distilled water, and take the appropriate the amount for one’s weight, and one must be having three bowel movements a day or do daily enemas before starting turpentine. The type of turpentine that I’ve found to be useful is “Sunnyside Brand Pure Gum Turpentine.” This is obtained at a hardware store. The dose of turpentine is one teaspoon poured over “Domino Dots.” This is a white sugar cube made by Domino. It’s important that it’s Domino Dots, because the size actually measures the turpentine dose. Once these are stacked one on top of the other, three cubes high, the turpentine is poured on the top sugar cube until the turpentine penetrates the top half of the bottom cube. Then it’s important to stop pouring. Then you pick up the first sugar cube, put it in your mouth, chew just enough to break it up so it can be swallowed, then chase it with water. Take the second cube, chew, chase with water and repeat with the third cube. This is done four days in a row, then two days a week. Generally one notices an effect within two days or so and the pain generally becomes gradually less and less and less. Once the pain is gone, the turpentine dose is reduce to once every week, then once every two weeks, and then once a month. The turpentine that is spaced out more than every six weeks, it appears the pain slowly returns. So that’s the use of turpentine. For more information on turpentine, one can check out my CD on turpentine. [AR: Does this one exist yet? Give exact title and ordering information]

The next herbal intervention for chronic pain is activated charcoal. Activated charcoal works in the intestines (it’s not absorbed). It actually soaks up chemicals and poisons that cause pain, so when you have bowel movements they are more effective in removing the pain, because each bowel movement contains even more pain-causing chemicals. Activated charcoal comes in powder or capsules and can be found at most any health food store. Charcoal, like turpentine, can only be started once the bowels are moving at least three times a day. This is very important because charcoal can slow the bowels. So you don’t want to take charcoal if you’re having one bowel movement a day, just two, or worse, if you’re skipping days. So activated charcoal is very helpful. The dose is once a day in the

evening.. Charcoal should not be taken with a meal or with vitamins because it can soak them up and interfere with the absorption of nutrients. So take this at bedtime. [AR: Do you dissolve it in a glass of distilled water and drink it down? How big a glass? Any favorite brand or type?]

The next herbal intervention for chronic pain will probably surprise many people, it’s a neti pot. Now neti pot is quite famous for its ability to clean out the sinuses. Many people with chronic and severe headaches benefit from the neti pot because there is a sinus component to their headaches or to their head pain. Often the head pain is so severe and so intense, it’s difficult to say where it starts and where it stops. So if you’re having chronic pain that affects any place above the neck, the neti pot is worth trying. Neti pots can be purchased at most any health food store and if your store does not have one, you can ask them to order one for you. Neti pots are made of all types of materials, but the one you want is made of ceramic. You take one quart of distilled water, add two teaspoons of sea salt, heat in a regular saucepan on the stove until the salt melts. Remove from the stove and let it cool to a warm, comfortable temperature and ladle about a cup into your neti pot. Then over the sink, hold the neti pot, tilt your head and actually pour the salt water into one nostril. It goes around, down and out the other nostril. There are some very good pictures that come with the neti pot explaining exactly how to do this. The most important thing for you to understand is that it’s two teaspoons of sea salt to one quart of water and that you do two potfuls in each nostril. People who have had severe, crushing face pain and headache have found incredible relief with this, so it’s really worth doing. How often? You can do it once a day, twice a day until the pain is gone. Most people find, they can switch to once a week, then once a month. Then they find, they may need to keep the neti pot nearby and they end up using it about three or four times a year. [AR: Do you need to wash the neti pot or care for it in some specific way??]

Another spot treatment for chronic pain is bleach. This is excellent for chronic pain that is localized to a finger or a toe or a small area that’s less than 3 inches by 3inches. You simply take one quarter cup of water and two tablespoons of bleach, the white bleach that you use to wash your clothes, and you put a piece of gauze in it, ring the gauze out so it’s damp, and you put the gauze over the painful area. This works extremely well with fingers, where you can actually wrap the damp gauze around the finger, then put another wrap around that, and that will kill the pain very nicely. This is something that is good to apply especially at night if the pain is keeping you awake and can be also worn during the day. So if you’re going to wear it continuously to relieve your pain, then you may want to change it once or day. Again, as you use other methods such as internal turpentine, enemas and drinking more water, you may find that you need to resort to the bleach less and less often.

Now these methods of pain relief can be used in any combination. So you can review the CD and decide for yourself which methods you’d like to try to out first. Some are basic and lay the groundwork for all the others. And these would be drinking water, dietary change, enemas and Dr. Daniel’s Vitality Capsules to keep yourself cleaned out. And from there you can work on any of the other herbs, on decreasing the drugs that worsen the pain and keep working until you’re pain free.

Many people find they don’t need to do everything that I’ve listed on this CD. But I’ve given you this list so that you might find enough things that are agreeable to you that you can do, so that you have the best chance of relieving your pain.
