The New World Wine & Food Festival returns for it’s 2nd year to bring you a day filled with amazing wine, food and so much more.Fifty leading wineries from around the South Island are here to showcase their wines, and over 40 food exhibitors, chefs and restaurateurs will be plating up their best culinary dishes throughout the day.

You’ll never be short of something to do with the range of on-site features including wine seminars, cooking exhibitions, sustainable living, outdoor cooking and more. And in between all of that, head to the main stage to enjoy some iconic New Zealand music artists at their very best. Chef ’s KitchenSarah Turpin - 11amWILD FOOD & PRODUCTS FROM NORTH CANTERBURYA graduate of CPIT, Sarah’s career has taken her to the refined luxury resort of Glenn Eagles in Scotland and also The Bath in Bristol, England before returning home to New Zealand to firstly work at Auckland’s Regent Hotel before the lure of Canterbury brought her home to Amberley’s Nor’Wester Cafe.

Darren Wright - 12pmSEAFOODDarren began his cooking career as a kitchen hand in Akaroa before completing his training at Christchurch Polytechnic. Whilst working at the Crowne Plaza in Christchurch he won the 1999 SPHC Junior Chef of the Nation title. Many years and countless accolades later, he just opened up his latest venture Chillingworth Road, having previously owned and operated the hugely

successful Harbour 71 restaurant in Akaroa. A member of the NZ Culinary Team he has been awarded the title of South Island Chef of the Year in 2007 and 2008, and won the Bidvest National Kitchen Team Regional Challenge.

Lauraine Jacobs - 1pm & 3pmENTERTAINING WITH EASE - FABULOUS FOOD FOR SUMMER DAYSFood Columnist for the NZ LISTENER magazine, an internationally respected food and wine writer and author/editor of eight cookbooks and one travel book, Matakana. She trained at the London Cordon Bleu School and has been writing on all matters culinary for more than 20 years, starting as food editor of Fashion Quarterly in the late ‘80s, and served as food editor for Cuisine magazine and wrote in Cuisine magazine for 22 years until 2009. A passionate cook and lover of simply presented fresh food, she has won many food and

recipe writing awards including two Gold Ladles at the World Food Media Awards. A tireless champion of New Zealand’s fine culinary scene, she was the major contributor to the Gold Ladle winning Cuisine Wine Country.

Gary Miller - 4pm NEW ZEALAND LAMBWell known for his work throughout the hospitality community of New Zealand and the Pacific Rim, he is regarded for his particular skills for event conception, organisation and delivery. But it is in the kitchen where he is happiest, working with simple fresh ingredients to bring out the best in flavour and sharing his enthusiasm and knowledge with an eager audience of food lovers.

Richard Hingston - 2pmDESSERT IDEAS FOR CHRISTMASRichard trained in London under Swiss professor John Huber, then worked with French pastry chef Robert Mey at the Hyatt Carlton Tower in Knightsbridge. He has also worked at Harrods and Four Seasons Inn on the Park and at the age of 24 he was Pastry chef at the Waldorf Hotel. While in the UK he became the first New Zealander to win the Academy Culinaire de France awards of excellence for

Pastry and in 2003 won New Zealand’s Pastry chef of the year. He now heads the Kitchens at the Christchurch Casino with some 30 chefs reporting to him.

Features FeaturesSUSTAINABLE LIVINGSustainability is a word we all hear talked about and even more so in light of the recent times in Christchurch, but we are often left wondering what it all actually means and how we can start making our own lives a little more sustainable. Even the simple food related tasks such as knowing what to buy, grow, cook and reduce waste can be challenging.

This year the New World Wine & Food Festival have introduced an exciting new feature to help make these tasks a little less daunting – our very own Sustainable Living Feature. This new area will be filled with a number of attractions including cooking demonstrations with locally grown produce, distilling of locally foraged plants, a mini community garden, bamboo vertical planters, kids’ activities including face painting and a colouring competition, lovely backyard chickens and worm farming demonstrations and generally information galore on how to incorporate sustainability into your life.

So if sustainable living is something that already has your attention or you would like to learn more about it, head along to this new feature to learn from the people ‘in the know’ as they pass on their advice and teach some truly hands-on valuable skills.

If you don’t have a ticket, head along and try your luck on the waiting list for each session. Sessions start on the hour and half hour with a duration of around 20 minutes. WAIPARA VALLEY WINE EXPERIENCEChristchurch’s ‘local’ wine region, Waipara Valley, will be offering a truly vinous experience. The Waipara Valley Wine Experience will give attendees the opportunity to enjoy tastings and discussions focusing on key wine varieties, which will be presented by the winemakers and caretakers of some of New Zealand’s premier wine estates.

Limited to 30 people per session, bookings are limited and only available today at the Waipara Valley Experience marquee. This is an area of the festival that is sure to be a huge hit for all those wine aficionados.

Yvonne Lorkin 6pm - 6.45pmFABULOUS FIZZWith Christmas just around the corner, Dish wine editor and star of TV’s Thirsty Work, Yvonne Lorkin will be providing the inside track on selecting, serving and generally getting savvy about sparkling wine this festive season. She’ll be popping the corks on brilliant bubbly from the best local examples to some classic French Champagnes, sharing hints and tips on styles in her engaging effervescent style.

Brian Bicknell 3.30pm - 4.15pmSAUVIGNON BLANC BLENDING WORKSHOPSauvignon Blanc supremo Brain Bicknell has made stunning Sauvignons across the world. In this hands-on session, Brian will be offering his knowledgeable insights into the surprisingly different styles of Sauvignon found in different spots across the Marlborough region and explaining the winemaker’s art of blending. He’ll then guide participants in creating their own individual blend.

Theo Coles & Ed Donaldson 4.45pm - 5.30pm A RIOT OF RIESLINGJoin Waipara wine personalities, Crater Rim winemaker Theo Coles and Pegasus Bay marketing manager, Ed Donaldson for a romp through the diverse range of Rieslings coming out of their region. The duo will be showcasing the delicious diversity of this noble variety. If you love Riesling, this session’s a must - if you’ve yet to discover its pleasures, come & be converted.

Gavin Hubble 11.30am - 12.30pmRIEDEL TASTING EXPERIENCEIn the Riedel Tasting Experience you will taste classic wine varietals in specifically shaped glassware and you will see the resulting influence the glass makes. Natalie Slade with DJ Nacoa 11amNatalie is a jazz singer turned funky ‘alt pop’ singer/ songwriter who spends her days writing and her nights jamming with DJ Nacoa. Better known for his part in ‘Switch, Sanchez and Nacoa’, DJ Nacoa is a Christchurch producer, DJ and RDU radio host. Together they make for a fusion of funk, break beat, spoken word, nu jazz and hip wiggling music.

Tahuna Breaks 6pmTahuna Breaks have always encompassed a rich diversity of musical genres and styles. With seven members, the group’s live act is energetic, raw and large. It combines aspects of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s and is influenced by artists as varied as James Brown to Daft Punk. The band are well known for being unafraid to mix genres and have honed their sound on the live stage that encompasses funk, disco, soul, live electronics and roots. Regulars at major events, the band have performed at The Big Day Out, Homegrown, Highlife NYE and many other major festivals across both New Zealand and Australia, along with countless tours and sold out performances.Since inception over 6 years ago, the band have gained momentum, focusing more and more on addictive rhythms that get audiences moving. They have an appetite for continuously progressing and pushing boundaries in their live performance, and audiences have already begun taking note of the band’s shift towards a sound that is bigger, darker and heavier

Anika Moa 12pmAfter 12 years in the music business, numerous Apra Silver Scroll nominations, a couple of Tui awards, a debut double platinum album with thinking room, platinum status with her third album in swings the tide, and gold status on her recent release love in motion, Moa could be termed a minor veteran. But that would suggest she has lost the confessional nature that has become her signature in the world of pop music. Anika Moa’s life is evolving to incorporate new ambitions and responsibilities - but as always – she lays bare her soul & casts a tender and cheeky grin across every song and crowd.

Don McGlashan & The Seven Sisters 1.30pmOne of New Zealand’s best-known and beloved songwriters, Don McGlashan Performs the South Island Wine & Food Festival with his full band the Seven Sisters. With a career that includes Blam Blam Blam, The Front Lawn, The Mutton Birds, and a pair of highly-acclaimed solo albums, Don shows no signs of slacking off, in fact he’s been performing more and more in recent years.Don opened for Crowded House on their 2008 US, European and Australian tours, and was a guest musician with the band. In 2009 he took part in Neil Finn’s Seven Worlds Collide project – collaborating on his own songs with Johnny Marr, and members of Wilco and Radiohead. In 2010 he featured on “Stroke”, the benefit/tribute album for Chris Knox that also includes Yo La Tengo, Lambchop, The Mountain Goats, Will Oldham and Lou Barlow. More recently he’s collaborated live with the likes of Australian master-songwriter Paul Kelly and Brian Ritchie of The Violent Femmes, taken his solo show to sell-out audiences in London and New York, and re-formed The Mutton Birds for a hugely successful winery tour earlier this year.

The Thomas Oliver Band 3pmThe Thomas Oliver Band have created a loyal following over the last few years, repeatedly selling out the San Francisco Bathhouse in Wellington and playing to capacity audiences around the country. Within this time, the band have also written and recorded their debut full- length album Baby, I’ll Play released in March 2011 to critical acclaim. It debuted at #12 in the New Zealand Top 40, and #1 in the iTunes Blues Charts in New Zealand and Australia. It is the fresh instrumentation of the 5-piece, including lap-slide guitar, double bass and baritone saxophone, which creates The Thomas Oliver Band’s distinctive sound. A sound that has seen them playing at some of the best summer series including La De Da, Auckland’s Zoo Music and A Day on the Green.

Sola Rosa 4.30pmWith six albums under his belt, a raft of accolades and well over a decade of producing genre-splitting music, Andrew Spraggon’s work as Sola Rosa has cemented him as one of the world’s most exciting and versatile producers.From a humble, self-released one man project, Sola Rosa has grown to a live collective of international repute. Successfully melding hip hop, reggae, jazz, latin, soul and funk, the group have never sat comfortably in one box, but with Spraggon’s guidance, that restlessness has been channelled into six succinct albums, with the most recent, Get it Together, reaching the number one spot on iTunes in New Zealand as well as the Independent NZ Music Album Chart, where it stayed for four months!Sola Rosa are now set to release their new album, Low and Behold, High and Beyond, which has been written over New Zealand’s past two summers. For fans, the new album has been a long time coming, for the uninitiated, it could well prove revelation.
