From the Pastor’s Desk

Last week, evil touched the people of France once again. The latest terrorist attack occurred in a Catholic parish in Normandy. Father Jacques Hamel was celebrating Mass when he and five other people were taken hostages by men who were acting in the name of ISIS. Ultimately, Father Hamel was killed and another person was left seriously injured before police took the lives of the aggressors. Archbishop Joseph Kurtz, President of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), offered this message: Catholic faithful around the world experienced the shock and sadness of this morning's barbaric attack on Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray in France, as if the loss was in our very own parish. We pray for Father Hamel and his parishioners knowing, as St. Paul stated regarding the Body of Christ, "if one suffers, all the parts suffer with it." (1 Cor 12:26) The Holy Mass is the most sacred and joyful act we, as Catholics, celebrate. Never are we closer to our Lord Jesus Christ than we are when we receive the Eucharist. No act of desecration – no matter how vile – can obscure the merciful presence of God. Jesus calls us to be sisters and brothers, to strive to care for one another, and always to reject the evil that seeks to divide us. We give thanks to God for the unforgettable witness of the faithful this morning at Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray.

We, too, are witnesses of the goodness of our God, who desires to establish his kingdom of life, peace, justice, and love. Our example of faith in Jesus is crucial at this moment in the history of western civilization. Catholics stand in peaceful, prayerful opposition to the violence that has become so prevalent in our world. The Church continues to echo the words of Jesus: “Love your enemies, pray for those who persecute you.” For seventy years, Christ the King Church on the east side of Columbus has shaped minds and hearts in accord with this message of mercy. On the weekend of our parish picnic, we pray for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit in this community of faith. We depend upon the Spirit to make effective our efforts to share Christ’s presence. Let us open ourselves to the gifts of the Spirit so that we might be example of Christian love in these troubled times. May the Lord bless you throughout the week. La semana pasada, el mal tocó otra vez al pueblo de Francia. El último ataque terrorista ocurrió en una parroquia católica en Normandía. El Padre Jacques Hamel estaba celebrando misa cuando él y otras cinco personas fueron tomados como rehenes por hombres que actuaban en nombre de ISIS. Al final, el padre Hamel fue asesinado y otra persona quedó gravemente herida antes de que la policía acabara con la vida de los agresores. El Arzobispo Joseph Kurtz, Presidente de la Conferencia de Obispos Católicos de EE.UU. We will be hosting a Protecting God’s Children training on Saturday, August 13, from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. in the church basement. This training will be conducted in Spanish only. The

Protecting God’s Children training is a child safety program that educates and trains adults (clergy, religious, teachers, staff, volunteers, and parents) about the dangers of abuse, the warning signs of abuse, the ways to prevent abuse, the methods of properly reporting suspicions of abuse, and responding to allegations of abuse. This training is mandatory for current and/or potential volunteers in the church who will be interacting with children. Please contact the church office at 237-0401 to register and for more information. (This event is in Spanish.) Year of Mercy: Pilgrimage to Washington, D.C.! We are planning a

pilgrimage to several Catholic shrines in Washington, D.C., including the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, the Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land, and the St. John Paul II National Shrine. There will also be time to visit museums and monuments on the National Mall. We will leave from Christ the King on Friday, Oct. 14, at 5:30 a.m. and return late on Saturday, Oct. 15. Cost: $200 per person, shared double occupancy or $250 per person single room. The price includes chartered motor coach to and from D.C., hotel accommodations and dinner for Oct. 14, hot breakfast at hotel, driver gratuity, and all guided tour fees. (This event is bilingual.)

As the only Catholic hospice in Columbus and the surrounding communities, Mount Carmel Hospice and Palliative Care Center invites you to join us in serving those who are at end-of-life. If

you are interested in becoming a hospice volunteer whether at the bedside or behind the scenes, join us for a special panel discussion. A group of Mount Carmel Hospice volunteers will discuss their roles and contributions then answer your questions. The session can help you find the best way to serve your community in this regard.
