Dear Family and Friends of CLC,
I recently read a reflection by Deborah Thompson that raises the question: “Have we become so ‘politically correct’ that even amongst ourselves as Christians, we find it is easier to talk about God rather than Jesus?” Easter is the central foundation of our Christian faith--the day that Christ rose from the dead--the day that we celebrate the LIVING Christ--a day that leads us to confirm Christ living in US! She writes, it is important to ask ourselves, "Are we keeping Christ alive in our lives?" Note the following definitions of alive:
• alert and animated,
• having interest and meaning,
• to be aware of and interested in,
• prevalent and very active,
• continuing to be supported or in use
Can these be used to describe our relationship with Christ? Is our connection, "alert, animated, prevalent, meaningful, active,” in use? Or is what we experience with Christ different - something less than that - and if so, why? What does Christ's life, death and resurrection really mean to our daily lives?
If we experience the Risen Christ, can we actually go on with our lives as if things are the same as before? Why has the phrase born again become symbolic with fun-damentalism? Aren't all Christians “born again?” Having "interest and meaning, being active and alive" in Christ is to be born again.
As we move throughout this Easter season, let us all remember to let Christ live in us. His death and resurrection are significant events not only in our religious lives, but in our daily lives as well.
"Christ is Risen!" May our words and especially our lives respond with enthusiasm – “Christ is Risen, Indeed!" Easter Blessings,
Pastor Lynn

Social Ministry - Faith In Action
As part of the ELCA, we believe God’s grace grants us the freedom to love and serve our neighbors, boldly responding to the needs of the world.
Hunger News
Thursday, May 9 is this month’s LSS mobile food pantry date. The pantry is operational
from noon to 2:00 pm at The Plains United Methodist Church. Volunteers are needed at
10:30 to set up the pantry, through the operating hours and during closing to dismantle
the pantry. Lunch for volunteers will be provided by Sue Ellen Miller and Marilyn Shea-
ly. This month we will say farewell to this year’s Athens HS National Honor Society volunteers. Questions
can be directed to Adele at [email protected].
Earth Justice
• Christ Lutheran will be celebrating Earth Day on May 5 with a special service and sermon on the Care of
the Earth and a display in the Narthex. There will be post cards available to sign and
send to our senators as well as a sign-up sheet for receiving climate news and updates
by email.
• Ultimate Recycling Day in Athens will be held on Saturday, May 18 at the Convocation
Center in Richland Avenue and will include tires and furniture (for a fee), paint and
household chemicals and computers and electronics.
• Stay tuned for a workshop sponsored by Earth Justice after the service, on July 14, with stations set up
around the Fellowship Hall demonstrating how to make useful things from recycled products and how to
make your own cleaning, dishwashing, laundry, and beauty and personal care products.
Advocacy Corner
Imagine you are moving to the area or traveling through town and looking for a welcoming
church to attend. How to find one? The church is in dialogue with Reconciling Works to be
listed on their website so we will be known to people who look for a church such as ours. If ap-
proved at the Congregational Meeting in June, it will be added to their website, as well as the
ELCA and synod registries:
We commit to being a Reconciling in Christ (RIC) Congregation
We, the members of Christ Lutheran Church, seek to be grounded in the reconciling Gospel of Jesus Christ.
We believe all people have been created in the image of God and affirm that everyone is of infinite worth and
has a valuable story. Called by Christ to share God’s Good News of reconciliation and wholeness, we wel-
come all who are seeking God. We embrace those of strong, uncertain, or undiscovered faith. We welcome
people of all racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds; all ages and economic means; and all LGBTQ identi-
ties. We welcome all marginalized people. We therefore intentionally educate ourselves and strive to be-
come more effective in our social ministry and as advocates for all God’s people. In the words of the hymn,
we are building “a house where love can dwell and all can safely live”: a house where the outcast and the
stranger bear the image of God’s face, a house where we join together to bring an end to fear and danger, a
house where all are welcome. To learn more about other Reconciling in Christ congregations like ours,
please visit https://www.reconcilingworks.org/about/.
Questions? We will be hosting a discussion on the statement May 7, 6 p.m., in the fellowship hall.

The CLC Mission Team to Montaña de Luz departs for Honduras on May 8. The team would appreciate your
prayers for safe travels and a fruitful time on the mountain of light. Team participants are:
Habitat for Humanity News
1. Scrap Metal Drive Saturday, May 18, 2019- 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. behind the Ohio University Convocation
Center. The Faith Build Coalition of Habitat for Humanity of SE Ohio will once again be teaming up with
the Athens County Solid Waste District to collect scrap metal during a community recycling day. The
ACSWD will be accepting hazardous waste and other recyclables while the Faith Build Coalition will be col-
lecting scrap aluminum, iron, brass, and copper wiring, appliances, gutters, etc. Chris Snoddy could
use a few volunteers to help unload the donations. Plus, bring all your old metal items! The more
weight collected, the more money raised to build the next home in Glouster.
2. Rummage Sale- Saturday, May 25, 2019- 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Christ the King Family Center.
This rummage sale will also benefit the Faith Build Coalition by raising funds for the next home build.
Bring donations of household goods, gardening and decorative items, clothing, etc. to the Family Center
behind Christ the King church on Thursday and Friday, May 23 and 24, from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m., or come
and shop for bargains!
Timothy House
May is one of the months during the year when we make a special
effort to collect items for Timothy House, the temporary home that
Good Works provides for homeless individuals and families. For suggested donations, pick up a copy of the
Good Works May Needs List on the large tote marked Timothy House in the narthex. You can place your do-
nations in or on top of the tote, to be delivered at the end of the month. Perishable food and large items can be
dropped off at Timothy House (please call first, 740-594-3333, to make sure someone’s there to receive your
donation). THANK YOU, your contributions are greatly appreciated!
Equality & Justice
Hard History Part 2 finishes up this month. Thanks to
Mike Cleland for again leading an excellent course. This
four part series has examined The Reconstruction, Jim
Crow, and Racial Violence from 1865-1940.
Stay tuned for upcoming educational opportunities from
Equality and Justice.
