MULTIPLE FAMILY MEMBER CAMP DISCOUNT FOR EXTENDED

CAMP

The Leaders Federation voted to reduce the Extended Camp fee for families sending two or more youth to extended camp. The first two family members fee will remain at $60 each. The fee will be reduced to $40 for the third, fourth, fifth or more siblings coming to camp. Contact Agent Hollar for more information at 715-743-5121

Summer Camp Synapsis

Ceramics Class June 15—16

(Kindergarten to 5th grade) Junior Leaders are pulling together a two-day ceramics class. Two days have been identified in the event the project takes more than one day to complete. Ceramics will be fired and just need painting. Individuals who are interested in this opportunity need to contact Lori at the Extension Office by MONDAY, MAY 23. We need to have at least 10 people sign up before we purchase supplies and facilitate the class. The ceramics program will take place from 10:00 a.m.—12:00 p.m. at the Hoard Town Hall (just west of Curtiss).

4-H Archery Class Held Archery class teaches youth how to shoot and handle a bow and safety. Thanks to Heidi Bower, Mike Kesling, and Dick Hughes for teaching this class. Sponsors for this class were Black River Sportsman's Club, Northwest Turkey Federation, Thorp Sportsman's Club, Roosevelt Rod and Gun Club, Rock Dam Rod and Gun Club, Clark County 4-H, and Creekside Convenience Store. Without these great sponsors 4-H shooting events would not be possible. Because of the large turn out this year they had two groups—one at 5:30 p.m. and one at 7:00 p.m.

Area Animal Science Days Area Animal Science Days (AASD) are the qualifying contests for the State 4-H Livestock Judging Contest. Each year there is a topic that each species participates in. In addition, there is a meats portion to the day’s events.

Dairy Exhibitors Invited to High Protein Show June 17 & 18

The Northeast Wisconsin High Protein Show will be held on June 17-18th at the Outagamie County Fairgrounds in Seymour. The show is open to all breeders of registered dairy cattle of the Ayrshire, Brown Swiss, Guernsey, Jersey and Milking Shorthorn breeds. This is a great opportunity for YOUTH EXHIBITORS and also adults that are “young at heart” to bring their registered colored breed cattle out for some friendly competition. Festivities begin on Friday, June 17, dedicating this evening to the youth exhibitors. Junior Showmanship will begin at 7:00 p.m. followed by a sponsored pizza party for the kids and their families to enjoy. The following day will be the dairy cattle show starting at 9:00 a.m. with spring heifer calves. The NEW High Protein Board of Directors hopes to provide a great experience for all! Clark County Livestock Committee Meeting Minutes 4/6/16 at ADS in Greenwood

Present: Cindy Kolzow, Trina Schmelzer, Terry Sischo, Wendell Attoe, Harlan Hinkelmann, Ross Roehl, Terry Byrne, Pam and Chelsea Stuttgen, Jerry Micke, Shari Jacque, Kimberly Mertens, Grant Koski, John Gutowski, Eric Eibergen, Tom Meyer, Candy Turnquist, Rich Meyer, Jim Micke, Duane Boon, Adam Luchterhand, Wayne Artac, Jason Wood, and Chris Hollar.

President, Grant Koski called the spring Clark County Livestock Committee meeting to order on April 6, 2016 at 7:35 p.m.

Secretary's report from the January meeting was reviewed. Harlan Hinkelmann moved to approve the minutes as presented and Eric Eibergen seconded the motion. Motion passed.

Treasurer's report was presented by Cindy Kolzow, treasurer. Checkbook balance as of 4/6/16 is $15,985.97. Trina Schmelzer moved to approve the report and John Gutowski seconded the motion. Motion passed.

Committee Reports Beef - No report Sheep - No report Swine - Grant shared that swine weigh-in is in one week at the county garage in Loyal. Swine committee requested permission from the livestock committee to bring in their own respective livestock animals early on Wednesday morning of fair week to the fairgrounds so they may get things ready for the weigh-in. They received complaints last year from several individuals. The livestock committee did not see any issue with this practice. Poultry - Chris Hollar shared the poultry committee is in need of a new chair person immediately. Jessica Thomas has stepped down from her position. Thank you to Jessica for her work on the poultry committee. Rabbits - Kimberly Mertens reported the showmanship contest for market sale exhibitors will be on Wednesday evening of fair week.

Old Business Sale time - The market sale will remain at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday night for this year. Time for the sale will be re-evaluated for next year in the fall.

New Business Livestock Committee Bylaws - Cindy Kolzow shared a draft copy of the livestock committee bylaws in the new format required by the State of Wisconsin. This was a read thru of the bylaws with the final approval being done at the September meeting. Discussion held. Three decisions were made in respect to the bylaws. 1. Terry Byrne moved an individual must be on a species committee (i.e. swine, beef, sheep, poultry, or rabbits) for 1 year before having voting rights on

the general livestock committee. Motion seconded by Harlan Hinkelmann. Discussion held. Motion passed: 15 - yes; 4 - no. 2. Rich Meyer moved and Harlan Hinkelmann seconded to continue with 3 members on the executive committee. Each member will rotate off in alternate

years and each member must be from a different species committee. Discussion held. Motion passed. 3. Harlan Hinkelmann moved an individual needs to be on a species committee for one year before having a vote on that species committee. Terry Byrne

seconded motion. Discussion held. Motion failed.

Under membership section of bylaws the livestock committee proposed to change guidelines from "any Clark County resident expressing interest in meat animal sale and show" to any "Clark County resident or individual enrolled in the Clark County livestock program".

In addition it was proposed to add a section to the bylaws defining the different committee structures (i.e. livestock general committee vs. individual species committee).

Lastly, it was suggested to handout a copy of the draft bylaws at the livestock banquet in August.

Scholarship Update - Cindy Kolzow shared the committee has received 6 applicants for this year. Unfortunately 2 will be disqualified as they are not complete with references.

Educational Sessions - There are two more sessions coming up they will qualify as educational credit. One being at Hotel Marshfield next week sponsored by General Farm Supply and another one in May at Medford for beef put on by Zimmerman’s and Danny Meyer.

Market Animal Summary Records - These records are available on the county extension website. There is a specific one for rabbits and one for poultry and one that is for beef, sheep, or swine. These are due at the livestock banquet.

Livestock Sale - No additional changes for this year.

Livestock Social - Cindy Kolzow is looking for volunteers to assist with set-up and clean-up of the social. The following individuals volunteered: Pam Stuttgen, Kimberly Mertens, Kathy and Molly Attoe.

Livestock Sale photos - Cindy will take again this year. Beef photos will be done immediately after the beef show on Thursday.

Carcass Show - Times for the carcass show educational sessions will be 6:30, 7:15, and 8:00 p.m.

Livestock Banquet - The date has been set for August 30th at the fairgrounds. Cindy is looking for a group of individuals interested in helping set-up food, monitoring food, and clean-up so committee members may enjoy the banquet and awards ceremony. Chris Hollar volunteered to check with some Neillsville groups. This year the poultry and rabbit youth are expected to help set up table and chairs prior to the banquet this year. Chris Hollar requested that species committees provide details for awards to Lori Hendrickson the week after the fair, so they can be ordered and done in time for the banquet.

Supreme Showmanship Contest - Grant Koski and Wendell Attoe will be chairing this contest and finalizing details.

Harlan Hinkelmann moved to adjourn the meeting and Eric Eibergen seconded the motion. Motion passed. Meeting adjourned at 8:56 p.m.

Hi! My name is Megan Schulte. I hail from Hammond, WI, which is located in the heart of St. Croix County. Born and raised on my family’s 150-cow dairy farm, agriculture has always been a large part of my life. Growing up I was very active in 4-H, showing dairy and beef at the county and state levels as well as participating on my county’s dairy judging team. I am currently a sophomore at the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities studying Agricultural Communications & Marketing. On campus I am involved in Gopher Dairy Club, Agricultural Education Club, and Beta of Clovia Sorority, as well as a member of the Dairy Judging Team. I’m looking forward to an exciting summer serving as the Clark County 4-H & Ag Extension Intern.

HCE DAIRY BAR VOLUNTEERS (YOUTH & ADULTS) ARE NEEDED AT CLARK COUNTY FAIR

August 11 through August 14 HCE stands for Home and Community Education, which many of you might know better as Extension Homemakers. Maybe you have a mom, grandmother, or aunt who belong or previously belonged to this organization. Our main goal of earning money at the Dairy Bar is to award THREE $500.00 scholarships to Clark County residents who are attending a college or technical school. After one year of education beyond high school, all Clark County residents are invited to apply. The applications can be obtained at the UW-Extension Office. Pick one up today if you qualify!

The Dairy Bar is open during the Clark County Fair, Thursday August 11th through Sunday August 14th. It takes many people to help with all the customers throughout the four days. If you have a friend that you'd like to bring along to work on your shift, even if not a 4-H member, they are more than welcome to sign up also.

Our HCE Dairy Bar is connected with the 4-H Food Stand. Last year we had many fantastic young volunteers come in and help. Either they were making hand dipped cones or scooping the ice cream into ice cream buckets for malts and shakes which are so popular. That was a life saver when we had orders of 5-6 malts at a time. We couldn't do it without your help!

Why would you like to come help us??? Besides all of us HCE members loving to work with the youth and meeting our fantastic volunteers, we do let you have your choice of an ice cream treat before you leave - it could be one of our double ice cream cones, a float, malt, or shake! Also if you do decide to apply for our HCE Scholarship, we'll give you extra points when adding up the score of who will receive the scholarship for their fall tuition.

4-H parents or grandparents—we'd love to offer this invitation to you also! Everyone will get a free admission to get into the fair the day you volunteer if you don't already have a season pass. Our shifts are about 4 hours and you'd have the remainder of the day to enjoy the fair.

I always compare being a member of HCE to my growing up in 4-H. I'd love to share with you what HCE is all about and invite you to join one of our clubs. Why should the kids have all the fun??? We have a State Conference which is very enjoyable and very educational. This September our State HCE Conference will be in Eau Claire. It's 1-3 day event of tours, learning sessions, meeting new friends and great food. Remember 4-H Camp? Well - HCE has many opportunities to continue learning too at any age! We have held many sewing events throughout this past year.

Clark County Fair Is Just Around The Corner and We Need Your Help!

Clark County Fair is August 10 – 14 this year and things are coming together. However we are in need of volunteers to help at the fair. What does a volunteer do?

They could check in items on Wednesday and Thursday, they could help with judging by scribing (Wednesday – Saturday), they could also help place and arrange exhibits once they are judged

(Wednesday – Friday). There are many things a volunteer could do to help!

Volunteers receive a free day pass into the fair on the day(s) they would work and a free meal ticket. If you would have questions before or during the fair we are always there to help.

and Zach Magnus (recent horse show that he attended). Annual Easter egg hunt was held outside following demonstrations. Roll call was taken with members responding with a favorite color. Cloverbuds worked on their activity of making cotton ball sheep. Grant Slone and Kaleb force reported on the Drama Festival; they enjoyed it, and would do it again next year. Anna Frederickson reported on the Music Festival; she received a blue on her violin performance. Nathan Stiemann reported on the Speaking Contest Mrs. Stiemann would like to meet with the officers to plan a date to meet and make/discuss our club’s new by-laws. The Slone, Magnus, and Koepp families volunteered to make a sign for the county-wide fair promotion contest. The Green family volun-

teered to work with the Wood family to make a saw cow for the club. The Stiemann family will look into ideas for the Cans for a Cause project. We could use volunteers to look into making a flower planter for the fair.

Discussed holding a brat sale in mid June. Mrs. Stiemann will look into dates at Gordy’s in Neillsville. We discussed having a brat stand at Gordy's or possibly Shopko. We would need electricity at Shopko. Next month is town hall clean-up and road-side clean-up. We will make a planter for the fairgrounds project. Katie Jorgensen will contact someone to show us how to plant a planter. We are going to be e-mailing the by-laws to every family and discussing them at the next meeting.

Clark County 4-H JOINT Leaders Federation Meeting Minutes / April 11, 2016 7:30p.m. / Loyal City Hall

Marla Lampi called the meeting to order at 7:30p on April 11, 2016 at the Loyal City Hall, pledges were recited. Roll Call: 4-H Clubs: Seventeen out of eighteen clubs present, Town & Country Partners absent Executive Board: Marla Lampi, Judy Morrow, Melissa Brecke, Lisa Artac, Heather Durrstein, Cindy Hohlstein, Dawson Gerhardt, Topanga Hanson, and Bryana Meyers Executive Board Absent: Brittany Artac, Hanna Durrstein, Cassie Elmer, Joan Buchholz, Morgan Hanson Secretary’s Report The Secretary’s Report handed out and posted in the April Cloverleaf for review. Shannon Toufar moved to accept the secretary’s report, Cindy Kolzow seconded, motion carried. Treasurer's Report Melissa Brecke shared treasurer’s report with a balance of $72,683.97. Cindy Hohlstein moved to approve the treasurers report, Tanya Wilke seconded, motion carried. Shannon Toufar voiced concerned over high checking account balance. Executive Board will work with Joan Buchholz to setting up an endowment. Amanda Durrstein, Heather Durrstein, and Cindy Hohlstein presented on the request for $487.50 to cover cost of clinicians for Horse Kick-off and Horse camp. Judy Morrow moved to approve the $487.50 request, Shannon Toufar second, motion carried. Reminded that the $50 State Fair Dairy participant reimbursement per youth is contingent upon submitting a Record book. Agent Hollar presented an adjusted version of the State Fair request form for the Horse Expo and Gymkhana. Cindy Hohlstein clarified that the $50 sponsorship is a requirement if Clark County sends youth down form. The form was rescinded. Cindy Kolzow moved for any youth requesting money from the leader’s federation for the State Fair must submit written request and submit a record book, Cindy Hohlstein seconded, motion carried. Program Area Budget Request was modified by Agent Hollar to make user friend. Heather Durrstein moved to approve modification, Judy Morrow Seconded, motion carried. Shannon Toufar moved to amend the New or Special Project Event line item to $5000, Judy Morrow seconded, motion carried. I am feeling very reflective at the moment. Picture me sitting back in a camp chair in front of an open fire pit pondering life. As bats swoop down to eat mosquitos and the stars are twinkling in the sky. In one month milestones will be reached by our graduating seniors. What will the future hold for them and did we equip them with the necessary tools to move into the next chapter of their lives.

Youth will leave school with a head full of knowledge and a yearning to attend summer 4-H camp (total subliminal messaging) to build skills like fire starting, trapping wild animals, killing fish with sharpened sticks, building shelter to stay warm at night, looking for grubs and bugs to eat. The earth giveth and the human taketh. These are the tools you can’t find on an app, sitting in front of screen, fingers glued to an electronic device. While their eyesight worsens from looking at small words and the eye doctor bills pile up with glasses, contacts, Lasik surgery, and eventual blindness. AHHH, stop the madness ...send your kids to camp out in the warm glow of that orb we call the sun!
