Editorial The chill in the morning air and the trees shedding their leaves give a clear hint that another festive season is knocking on the door! Durga Puja, the most popular festival of Bengal, is first on the list of festivals. Though a Hindu ritual, Durga Puja has transcended the religious boundaries because of its innovative artistic themes and cultural extravaganzas associated with it.

We, the members of Utsav, the Bengali association of Sacramento Valley, are organizing our very own Durga Puja which is entering its 11th year. We have a sense of deep association with this puja as all of us have a role to play. Some of us have management roles, some take part in acting, singing, painting, naru making, and what not.

Coming up with a season of new publications – ‘Pujo Sankhya’ or puja edition of magazines is an important tradition associated with Durga Puja. Chowrongee, the annual magazine of Utsav, is part of the same tradition. Utsav members become poets, writers, critics, proof readers, composers, and so on.

For the past eleven years, every issue of Chowrongee attempted to provide a window to the thoughts and dreams of the Bengalis living in the Sacramento Valley of California which were articulated by both kids and adults through their paintings, poems, stories and articles. Some reminisced the puja days of Kolkata, some portrayed the future they intended to build in USA. This year is no different.

Like Utsav, over all these eleven years, Chowrongee has also been supported by dedicated team members to ensure its quality and timely production. I thank all those, who as members of Utsav’s Literary Committee or in any other capacity, have helped with the production of Chowrongee, and I am sure they will continue to do so in the future.

Message from the Utsav Boardroom Dear Utsav Families and Friends, The Utsav Board of 2012 welcomes you all to celebrate the 11th year of Utsav’s Durga Puja. I am sure you all will agree that it is a challenging task to follow the mammoth celebration of our “10th Year Of Success.” But we the Utsav Board Members have continued Utsav’s main motto when we began our journey in 2002, namely to involve the membership and bring the community together to pass on our rich culture and heritage to the next generation.

Last year, we wanted our members to sit back, relax, and enjoy the performances of the talented artists from India such as Tanushree Shankar and her Dance Troup, as well as the melodious voices of Aneek and Anwesha. This year, our members took it upon themselves to show us their talent. This will portray the fact that, if we put our heart and soul together, we can really put up a show for our community to see and feel the Durgotsav the way it supposed to be felt and celebrated. Also, this time we are taking our talents to Davis, and I know that it is quiet a drive for many of us but this change will not only help Utsav financially but will also prove that Utsav is really a community that belongs to the Greater Sacramento.

Based on our new Bylaws passed last

year, this is the final year of the two-year term of the current Utsav Board (including my two-year tenure as President), and during this final quarter, I would like to THANK all of you who made these past two years something to cherish for a long period of time. Last but not the least, I want to personally thank all the volunteers from the bottom of my heart who came forward in making this year a special one for not only me but for all of us.

I know we are not perfect but it is you, the Members and the Friends of Utsav, who should come forward and bring us to perfection. So please do not hesitate to reach out to us because constructive criticisms and suggestions are the steps to perfection.

Community News

Sumita Ghosh, daughter of Paramita and Sumanta Ghosh, graduated from Franklin High School in 2012. She has joined University of California, Berkeley, where she is studying Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman.

Stuti Ghoshal, daughter of Tuhina and Surajit Ghoshal, graduated from Oakmont High School in 2012. She has joined University of California, Berkeley, where she is studying Biochemistry and Molecular Biology as a freshman.

Natasha Choudri, daughter of Mitra and Adi Choudri, completed her Bachelors degree in Psychology from Cal Poly Pomona in June 2011, and she has now joined the Ph.D. program at Pepperdine University.

Farah Billah, daughter of Baby and Rana Billah, graduated from Mira Loma High School in 2012. She has joined University of California, Irvine, where she is studying Political Science as a freshman.

Farah Billah won the Editor’s Choice Award for her poem “Two Parks” in the World Poetry Movements, 2012.

Avishek Nag received his PhD Degree from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at University of California, Davis, in July 2012. His PhD Dissertation is entitled Cost and Energy Efficiency in Next-Generation Variable-Bit-Rate Optical Networks. He is continuing his research on Optical Networks.

Bipasha Mukherjee, daughter of Supriya and Biswanath Mukherjee, tied the wedding knot with Christopher Clavin, during a gala celebration on November 12, 2011, in Sacramento. This event was enjoyed by many of our Utsav members.

Enthusiatic volunteers from Utsav joined in the annual spring cleaning program (Karma Yoga) that was organized by the Vedanta Society of Sacramento on March 2012.


Dragon by Khounish, 11 years, is a sixth grader and lives in Elk Grove.

Nirvik Basuroy, 6 years, is a first grader at Gallardo Elementary School.

My Trip to India Kajori Mukherjee

I finally visited India this summer after four years. I was very excited about meeting all my relatives again. I couldn’t wait to eat the food my dad was raving about. I didn’t have much memory of India because it had been a while since I’d been there. When I first got out of the Kolkata airport, I was stunned! I did expect the streets to be crowded but not that crowded. It was extremely loud. Everyone was shouting in Bangla. My parents and I got in the car that was waiting for us and we went to the house we would be staying in.

About a week later we visited a beautiful place called Kerala, which is in South India. It reminded me a lot of Hawaii because of the palm trees and the natural beauty. I came to know that Kerala is also called the “Venice of the East”. We first visited Fort Kochi to see Chinese fishing nets, and a large beautiful church. Next day, we went to see the Athirappilly waterfalls. The scenery was breathtaking. We hiked down a mountain, and climbed over huge boulders to finally reach the waterfall.

We also went on a very relaxing “shikara” (boat) ride down the Alleppey backwaters. Even though ours was a small

one, I saw several which were as big as actual houses.

Our next stop was Kovalam Beach. It is a huge stretch of white sand. It used to be one of the best beaches of India but a lot of it is gone due to erosion. In Trivandrum, the capital of Kerala, we visited the Padmanabhaswamy Temple. Sri Padmanabha (Lord Vishnu) is lying down on the snake Anantha. The snake has five hoods facing inwards, representing contemplation. We also visited the Napier Museum which had beautiful statues and portraits. While driving around Trivandram, I noticed that, apart from the billboards which were written in the local language, and the attire of the men (lungi), there was not much difference between Kolkata and Trivandram. Before leaving, we visited Poovar Island where the backwater meets the sea. Finally, we returned back to Kolkata.

My two cousins had their sacred thread ceremony in late June. I was told that it is a solemn ceremony where a young brahmin boy officially becomes a brahmin and gets to wear the sacred thread diagonally across their bodies. It was fun even though the ceremony was very long. The reception, which took place in the Taj hotel, was more


fun. I believe it is one of the best hotels in Kolkata. My dad is a foodie and because of him, we got to eat delicious food at restaurants such as Jimmy’s Kitchen (Chinese), Flame and Grill, and Arsenal, which is famous for its biriyani. We also took a tour of Kolkata, and saw many different monuments. We saw Rabindranath

Tagore’s house, the Town Hall, Mother Teresa’s home, among others. We also visited a lovely place near the Ganges River called Falta, which is a resort meant for weekend getaways. This trip to India was an amazing experience and I cannot wait to go back again.

To and From Russia with Love Shyama P. Chakroborty

My first direct exposure with Russia came in the mid-1990s. This was the time frame when the cold war was about to end and the mighty Soviet Empire was in the process of disintegration. Originally, my involvement in Russia started as part of a joint collaboration with a Russian Rocket Engine Company in my capacity as the Chief Engineer of an aerospace company.

During the joint collaboration with the Russians, our engineers and their counterparts in Russia worked collaboratively to adopt the Russian rocket engines from their lunar program in the 1960s for commercial application in the USA which required many complicated design changes. Many of the engineers in my organization started to travel to Russia while the Russian engineers came to our facilities. Several engineers in my organization came back with beautiful Russian wives, giving true meaning to “From Russia with Love”. Subsequently, I started going to Russia. However, my main focus was to get into their Astronaut (cosmonaut in Russian) program and get the most out of my time in Russia.

Eventually, I got the opportunity to go to “Star City” in 2002, the western name for the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center (YGCC) located in Youzny, a city approximately an hour’s drive from Moscow. The YGCC in Youzny is in a heavily-guarded walled city which housed the cosmonaut training facilities and the residential flats for the space scientists, cosmonauts, support personnel, and their

families. In addition, several American-style homes were built inside the compound to house the American and European Space Agency (ESA) astronauts when they went there for the joint training with the Russian cosmonauts before their launch to the International Space Station (ISS).

A life-sized statue of Yuri Gagarin, the first human to go to space in 1961, holding a single red rose would greet the visitors immediately after going through the heavily-guarded entrance. I have been told that the rose was to show Gagarin’s eternal love for

his wife who lived in a flat behind the statue for many years after he died

following his crash in a Mig

15 in 1968. Even to this date, he remains one of the most revered figures in the Russian society. They have preserved his office in Star City in exactly the same way he left it before taking his fatal Mig 15 flight from a nearby Air Force Base. He was being groomed to be the Neil Armstrong of Russia as the first human to land on the moon. Subsequently, the Soviet Union lost the moon race. However, even to this date, every cosmonaut who gets certified after completing their training is required to go to his office and take a vow to uphold the honor of the motherland in the best tradition and ideals he set for his fellow Russians. Immediately after doing my cosmonaut training, I had the great honor to be accorded this privilege to visit Gagarin’s office to pay my homage.

their past and present space crafts and Space Stations, including the current earth-orbiting ISS. Eventually, I completed the training in the Soyuz spacecraft which the Russians currently use to transport both American and Russian astronauts and cosmonauts to the ISS, their previous Mir Space Station, centrifuge (the largest in the world), the Russian Module of the ISS, Orlan Space suit, vestibular chair, natural buoyancy pool where the astronauts train to work on the underwater replica of the Russian module of the International Space Station in addition to other simulators. I also got to fly their Space Shuttle, Buran, in the simulator. The Russians successfully flew their Space Shuttle twice before placing it as a display in Gorky Park.

After the training at the YGCC in Star City, I came to their Mission Control center in Moscow. This is a very impressive center which houses all the controllers which provide the command and controls for all their spacecrafts including communication with the American astronauts and the Russian cosmonauts currently working in the ISS. The NASA Mission Control in Houston and the Russian Mission Control in Moscow share the Command and Control tasks, taking turns around the clock. The walls of the Russian Mission Control Center are decorated with pictures of all the Cosmonauts who went to space starting with Yuri Gagarin. My Russian hosts proudly pointed out the picture of Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma from India who

went to space and spent a few days at their Salyut-7 Space Station in 1984.

In addition to my helpful and friendly Russian trainers, I was privileged to meet many other individuals who extended their friendship and hospitability. Although I eventually learned to speak Russian, at the beginning I was provided with a bright and beautiful Russian interpreter, Anna Tsikaya, to help me communicate with the Russian trainers. Anna was the Head of the Interpreter Group at YGCC who helped the American and European Space Agency astronauts when they trained with the Russian cosmonauts before their launch for space duty in the ISS. Eventually, I met Anna’s husband, Ruslan, who was a former Colonel in the Russian Air Force. Subsequently, he became a pilot for the Russian Space Agency and transported the astronauts and cosmonauts between Moscow and Baikonur in Kazakhstan, the launch site for most of the Russian space missions. Ruslan was a very tall and handsome man. Even though he had great difficulty with his English, he tried very hard to communicate. Both Anna and Ruslan became my friends.

eventually became a very close friend of mine. During my subsequent trips, I stayed with Tatiana. She visited me twice in Los Angeles and

Sacramento. Ruslan was originally from Ukraine while Anna was Russian, the only daughter of a Colonel in the Russian Air Force and a mother who was a Professor at their Air Force Academy. After dinner and a few shots of vodka, Ruslan and his son played the guitar and sang many Russian tunes. It was a very memorable evening and I cherish the fond memories of their genuine friendship and hospitability.

Another remarkable and interesting man was Anatoly Mikhiv. He was the local Head of Moscow Operations of Aerojet Propulsion Company in Sacramento. I knew Anatoly from my days at Aerojet as the Chief Engineer. Anatoly provided all the logistical support during my Cosmonaut training and drove me in his Mercedes between Moscow and YGCC in Youzny. A heavy-set, barrel-chested man, he was one of the most interesting and jovial persons I ever met. I would also never know how a person could consume so much liquid food (yes, you guessed it right, vodka!). He was also an ultimate wheeler dealer who could talk anybody into doing anything.

One day, after a grueling training session at the YGCC, I asked Anatoly if it was possible to go to the world-famous Bolshoi Theater, which was normally always sold out. It was difficult to get tickets particularly on the day of the performance unless somebody was willing to pay an exorbitant amount to the scalper. Anatoly told me not to worry with his usual mischievous laugh. He said, “Dawaii, Dawaii (let’s do it!)”. We went to Bolshoi

Theater about an hour before the show. He bought two of the cheapest tickets from the scalpers with some hard bargain at almost the face value! When we went inside the theater and got seated, we found that the “Bob Uecker seats” almost needed oxygen and a powerful binocular to have any acceptable view of the stage. When Anatoly detected my disappointment from my sad face, he told me to relax. He asked me to give him a few Roubles (about $100), and went away for a while. Within minutes, he came back with another burly Russian with a flash light in hand and signaled me to get up. They guided me through the theater, and just before the start of the show, we were seated in the second row in some of the most coveted seats in the world-famous Bolshoi Theater! My wheeler-dealer friend worked the Russian system and came through for me. It was one of the most awesome shows I have ever seen! I also came to know that bribery is alive and well in all parts of the world and is not an Indian monopoly.

There are many fond memories from my thrilling flight to over 85,000 ft in a Mig 25,

one of the two fastest planes ever built in

history. The only Mach 3 plane in the USA even to this date is the SR 71,

the high-altitude reconnaissance plane. It has been openly known for many years that the Russians built the Foxbat (Mig 25) as a defense against the SR 71. Anatoly drove me to Zhukovsky Air Force Base bright and early on the day of my flight so that I could do all the paper work, and go through a rigorous check list and medical tests. They


took a copy of my American Federal Aviation Agency’s (FAA) pilot license. I was certified and licensed to fly in the USA since 1977. The flight plan was to pull over 6 gs and climbing up to the edge of space and doing a number of exciting and dangerous maneuvers such as doing complete 3600 rolls in flight. By the time, I reached 85,000 ft with the Mach meter reading 2.6, I saw the stars in the sky above and the curvature of the earth over the horizon. It was one of the most thrilling experiences I have ever experienced. The successful landing was followed by toasting with vodka with a chorus of “Dawaii, Dawaii” from my Russian coordinators who arranged the flight. I was then escorted to the office where a renowned Russian test pilot, Popov, gave me the certificate commemorating my Mig 25 flight. I fondly remember how two of the Russian lady workers at the Air Force Base labored so hard for a considerable time to locate a g-suit, oxygen mask, and helmet that would fit me. I suppose the anatomical contours of my body and head were drastically different from those of the bigger Russian pilots whose flight gears the lady workers were sorting through to find the one that would fit me tightly.

Another of my major adventures was the expedition to the North Pole which started in Moscow. I was part of a 16-member international expedition team which successfully trekked to the North Pole. The team comprised of members from various countries including Russia (three Russian paratroopers), England, France, Germany, Austria, Brazil, Turkey, USA, and Iran. We flew from Moscow to Katanga, a small city in Siberia. It was during the winter season. We have all heard the proverbial “Frozen Tundra”. It looked like the entire city was covered with a thick layer of snow. Only a few feet of the mast above the snow would tell us about the ship beneath it! This was

literally the frozen Tundra where we were holed up in a modest hotel for almost a week, waiting for the weather at the Base Camp Boneo, an 8-hour flight from Katanga, to clear up. During those days, we would venture out and visit a few restaurants and small shops that kept the lifeline alive in this snow-covered Siberian city. We would stroll around the city in our arctic gears with 3-inch thick insulation to get us accustomed to the severe cold weather which we were expecting to experience while at the North Pole. We also visited a museum that housed many of the relics of the Woolly mammoth that roamed these areas over 50,000 years ago.

Some of the most hilarious moments during the North Pole expedition came from our Iranian team member. When he (name withheld) first showed up in Moscow, he had a long and bushy black beard and could not be talked into taking any alcoholic drinks. Then, when we were holed up in our hotel in Siberia prior to going to the North Pole, we finally talked him into taking a sip of vodka. Apparently, he liked it very much as it was evident from a very loud Tarzan-like yell he belted out. Everyday, his consumption went up to match his increasing liking for his new-found magical drink which he had been missing all these years. Ultimately, he would start getting totally drunk. Then, one evening when we gathered in the lobby to play our endless boring games (name that tune, name that movie, name that person, and so on), he showed up completely drunk, and completely clean shaven. He started to scream with various epithets about the Iranian revolution and the rigidly-conservative society it had created. One of our Russian friends, Sergei, cracked that the USA needed to follow a different tact in their foreign policy about Iran. He suggested that the USA should air-drop case loads of vodka all over in Iran, particularly on its

university campuses to change the mood and attitude of this conservative nation.

Our IL-76 transport plane was to land at the Base Camp, and it was very essential that there were no cracks or ridges built up on the surface which was basically an 8-10 feet thick ice surface that was to be used as the landing strip. Due to the strong current of the Arctic Ocean underneath, the ice would crack or bulge, creating problems for the landing. Eventually, we found the suitable condition to fly to the Base Camp located at 890 latitude. We camped at the Base Camp for a day.

One of the most daring acts was to dash to the toilet (a fancy name for an enclosed tent surrounding a hole on the ground). The challenge was to dash there from our tent and take no more than a few seconds to get the job done to avoid any severe injury to the bare skin from the severe cold weather hovering near 60 to 70 degree below zero coupled with strong wind and gusts.

Most of the expeditioners trekked the last degree from 890 to 900, a distance of 111 km by cross-country skiing in severe weather conditions with the temperature and wind reaching minus 70 degree and 30 mph.

After we successfully reached the North Pole, we celebrated with the traditional Russian dance in a circle while toasting with vodka (what else?). We did not trek back by skiing. The Mi-8 helicopters of the Russian Air Force flew from the Base Camp to take

us back from the North Pole. However, for the sake of posterity, most of the

expeditioners jumped one by

one from 6,500 ft

from the helicopter to the North Pole with parachute. Finally, all of them got back in the helicopter to fly back to the Base Camp and then to Moscow.

I have many memories from my other adventures such as swimming the English Channel between England and France or climbing up to the Base Camp of Mt. Everest in Nepal, but the memories from my numerous trips and time in Russia are very close to my heart. I have never claimed or bragged about my richness in material sense,

but I am very proud of my rich

bank balance in

bank. I met many

friendly and the

most wonderful people while in Russia. I visited some of the most magnificent art museums in the world in Moscow and St. Petersburg. I was privileged to enjoy some of the most elegant ballets and operas at the Bolshoi Theater. I was invited to the Kremlin Palace to a show where some of the

top bands of Russia and a legendary singer from Italy performed.

Anatoly and Tatiana took me to many authentic Russian and ethnic restaurants (Georgian, Kyrgyzstani, Uzbek, Azerbaijani, Swedish, and Japanese among others). Anatoly arranged a lovely dinner for me at a Georgian restaurant in Moscow and made sure that we got to sit on the same table where President Clinton was once entertained during his State Visit! He tried to arrange the same menu and the Georgian wine which were served to President Clinton!

I took many leisurely walk along the beautiful Moscow River overlooking the Kremlin. The Red Square is imposing. I got to visit Lenin’s body in the Mausoleum in the Red Square. The changing of the guard at the eternal flame in the courtyard of the Kremlin is fascinating.

Russia is the largest country in the world, covering 11 time zones and 6,592,735 square miles with enormous natural resources. It has been under dictatorship or autocratic rule for hundreds of years under the Czars followed by the rigid communist rule after the Russian revolution in 1917. They are obviously struggling with their on-going experimentation with democracy, resulting in many social upheavals. The empire that was going to unite the proletariats of the world with equitable distribution of wealth among its masses has now created a vast gulf of differences between its haves and have-nots. The nuevo-rich billionaires from Russia have bought sports franchises such as the NBA’s New Jersey Nets (now Brooklin

Nets) and the English Premier League’s Arsenal, while I have also encountered many young Russian mothers holding their small babies asking (I am avoiding the dreaded word “begging”) for help while strolling between my hotel and the nearby Kremlin.

One thing I know for sure. The Russian people are very talented with a long heritage of art, science, and culture spanning hundreds of years. Once their transformation to a democratic society is complete, they are destined to achieve greatness again and become a prosperous nation.

Anatoly and Nadia were very hospitable hosts. They invited me to their Dacha and entertained me with many authentic Russian meals. Nadia always prepared my favorite

Borsch soup, a common and popular Russian soup made from beets. I still

fondly remember

their playful young daughter,

Masha, who was then a 6-year-old beautiful little girl trying to size up all the guests at their home by asking many innocent questions. We called her pachemoochka (meaning “he or she who always asks non-stop questions”). Since then, many years have passed by until very recently when I got a heart-warming e-mail request from a concerned father, Anatoly, with a picture of Masha who has now blossomed into a very beautiful (Ochen Kracivoya) 18-year-old girl. She has just graduated from her school in Moscow and was looking into enrolling at UCLA for her under graduate studies. Interestingly, Masha was born in the USA during one of Anatoly’s past business trips to the USA. Anatoly knew that I taught Space and Rocket Science at UCLA as an


Adjunct Professor and was soliciting help and information from me about UCLA. Needless to say, I tried my best to be helpful

to this loving father, my friend (Moi Drook) Anatoly.

Dr. Shyama P. Chakraborty, a prominent rocket scientist and a Member of the National Academy of Engineering, has diverse interests along with his primary profession. He has been to North Pole and Mt. Everest base camp and also swam the English Channel. He lives in Folsom.


33G Notebook Biswanath Mukherjee

33G is a travel notebook which has evolved from the Sacramento Notebook columns which appeared in Chowrongee 2006 and Chowrongee 2007. (Please see Chowrongee 2005 for an explanation on 33G.) This edition of 33G Notebook covers some of the wonderful places the author was fortunate to visit recently.

Big Island, Hawaii For most travelers to Hawaii, their initial visits are typically to the famous islands of Oahu and Maui; and a later trip usually takes them to the Big Island (also called Hawaii)… and this was also the case for my wife and me. As soon as we landed at Kona Airport, located on the western shore of the island, I was wondering if this was our correct destination… as there was no tropical paradise in the vicinity which Hawaii is known for, and all we could see around us was black rock (lava flows from many years back from the Moana Loa mountain, which is centrally located in the island and which can be seen from afar). Hawaiian airports have “open-air” terminals, and getting our rental car was easy. The half-hour drive to our hotel was almost entirely through barren land with black rocks (lava flows), but the monotony was broken by white rocks which people had used to spell out their initials or other messages. Finally, after reaching our hotel, The Hilton Waikoloa Resort, we got what we wanted: greenery, flowers, palm trees, a shopping mall, and our hotel – a mini-city, with four huge buildings, three extra-large swimming pools, numerous restaurants, an eclectic and expansive collections of arts spread all over the property, a monorail and boats to transfer people between different locations in the resort, its own beach, and fountains. Of course, almost all it was artificial.

The next day, we drove three hours to the eastern side of the island, where the main city is Hilo, and what a contrast it was! Now, we could experience the tropical

paradise which Hawaii is known for: natural flora and fauna, rain forest, etc. We visited the Moana Loa macademia nut factory, touched macademic nut trees, did some short volcano hikes, and sipped wine at the Volcano Winery. But the highlight was our visit to the Volcano National Park where we saw a live volcano (called Kilauae) spewing out lava which flows into the ocean and which has closed some of the roads in the region.

Paris in Vegas The North American Bengali Conference (NABC) (aka Banga-sammelan) 2013 was held at the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas. This event enabled us to enjoy many aspects of Bengali culture with our friends and relatives who came from various parts of North America (including many Sacramentans). My favorite programs were: the classical vocals performed by Pandit Jasraj, the songs by Kavita Krishnamurthy and Sankar Mahadevan, and the movie Bhooter Bhabiswat. Of course, there were plenty of other wonderful performances such as dance, drama, poetry, movies,


lectures, etc., as well as a “bazaar” of sarees, jewelry, etc., so a good time could be had by all.

Paris Hotel and Casino (NABC 2012). Around and inside the Paris Hotel and

Casino, there were miniature versions of famous Paris landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, etc. My first impression of Paris was that it is a “huge” hotel… as it was quite spacious and had numerous restaurants (serving a wide variety of food, including French cuisine, which my family really enjoys). But, after NABC ended, we checked out the other famous hotels and casinos along the “Las Vegas Strip” and found that Paris is really small compared to the sprawling properties at The Venetian, Ceasars, Bellagio, MGM, etc. Seeing the crowds at the casinos and restaurants, it was hard to imagine that our society is experiencing difficult financial times today. Grand Canyon, Zion, and Bryce Canyon We piggybacked (on our NABC trip) visits to Grand Canyon, Zion National Park, and Bryce Canyon because of their proximity to Las Vegas. And we saw/met several other Bengali families exploiting the same opportunity, particularly at Grand Canyon (South Rim). The South Rim draws numerous visitors from all over the world, but the North Rim, which we also visited, is

equally beautiful but less accessible and draws perhaps a 1000 times fewer visitors. Over many centuries, the Colorado River has carved the Grand Canyon to its current breathtaking shape.

Zion National Park is also a spectacular canyon in Southern Utah and it is “carved” by the Virgin River. It has one road going through the canyon next to the river, with many easy hikes, and it is a lot less crowded than Grand Canyon (South).

Just like in Zion, the soil in Bryce Canyon is rich in iron, which gives it a bright red color. Unlike Grand and Zion, Byrce is technically not a canyon as it is not “carved” by a river. “Bryce is famous for its unique geology which consists of several horseshoe-shaped amphitheaters carved from the erosional force of frost-wedging and the dissolving power of rainwater… which have shaped the colorful limestone rock of the region into bizarre shapes, including slot canyons, windows, fins, etc. called "hoodoos"” [National Park Service]. Mahabalipuram Mahabalipuram is a port/beach city on the Bay of Bengal in Southern India, about a 1.5-hr drive from Chennai. It is famous for its old architecture, including carvings from the 7th century created by the Pallava Dynasty, and it has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The carvings show Roman and Egyptian art, indicating that there were communication


and trade with these far-away civilizations even 14 centuries back!

The beach at Mahabalipuram is long and wide with warm sand, and it could probably be better commercialized to attract many more visitors. I was visiting this place after nearly 35 years, and the beach was still very attractive. The beach has the famous “Shore Temple”… and the story goes that there are six other such temples but they have been devoured by the sea. After the December 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, the sand on the beach got swept away in many locations on the beach, and out popped a small temple which no one had seen before… and it is now aptly called the “Tsunami Temple”.

Taipliece: The Flight Marshal On my recent flight from Bombay to Newark NJ (a Boeing 777), I was the first to board the plane, but as I approached my seat (3A), I found that my neighbor in 3B had his belongings on or around his seat, such as two large bottles of water. (How did he board the flight before me?) I was wondering how he smuggled the H2O into the plane, and where he got the large bottle of Smart Water, which you get at Starbucks but probably not in Bombay. After the boarding was done, this guy emerged from somewhere. He was probably in his late 20s, looked Israeli, and seemed like a tough guy. Although this was a long flight (15+ hours) and he had a flat-bed seat, he did not sleep during the flight at all. He remained seated all flight, playing games on his hand-held device. My instinct tells me he was a flight marshal, viz. an undercover law enforcement agent who counters aircraft hijackings and who blends in with the passengers. I suppose he had just come from Newark and was heading back to Newark on the same plane now. I speculate that he was now “working” on the Bombay-Newark flight after having “rested” on the inbound flight. I also suppose he had a partner (in seat 2B) who “worked” on the inbound flight and was not resting on the outbound flight. And his seat and mine were close to the cockpit. As you can imagine, I felt safe and slept soundly. So, the next time you are on such a long-distance flight, see if you can spot the flight marshal(s), by looking at the passengers in the front seats of the flight.

Vivekananda and Rabindranath Swami Prapannananda

Swami Vivekananda and poet Rabindranath Tagore were born in North Kolkata within a difference of two years only. Rabindranath was born in Jorasanko on May 7, 1861, and Swami Vivekananda, then Narendranath, in Simla on January 12, 1863. Both hailed from well-educated, cultured, and aristocratic families.

Abanindranath Tagore, another luminary of the Tagore family, has written in one of his books that Deependranath Tagore and Narendranath were good friends and they studied together in the same college. Deependranath was a grandson of Maharshi Debendranath Tagore and was a repository of Tagore’s songs. Narendranath used to visit the house of Tagores occasionally because of this friendship. Narendranath also knew Maharshi Devendranath, father of Rabindranath. There is a well-known conversation between him and Maharshi when he had approached him as a spiritual seeker.

Narendranath was a member of the Brahmo Samaj during his student days and was fond of singing Brahmo songs. Two of the many Brahmo songs that he used to sing are: maha sinhasane bosi shunichha he biswapita and tanhare arati kare chandra tapana.

There is an interesting story about Narendra’s singing of the first song in the Bengali biography of Swami Vivekananda known as Yuganayak Vivekananda. In the morning of the first day of the B.A. examination, Narendra got up from his bed early and took a walk to the house of his classmates Haridas and Dasarathi Sanyal. The latter became a well-known lawyer of Kolkata High Court. Narendra used to visit them often in connection with studies and

occasionally the time used to be spent in gossips. Reaching the room of his friends, he started singing in a loud voice that particular song sinhanane basi. When asked by his eager friends the cause of the rejoicing, he smilingly said, ”I am cleansing my brain”.

Narendranath sang two Tagore’s songs, mahasihasane basi and tomarei kariachhi jivanero dhruvatara, at Shyampukur on October 24, 1885, in front of Sri Ramakrishna, who was brought from Dakshineswar to that place for treatment of cancer. The well-known physician of Kolkata, Dr. Mahendralal Sarkar, was present there. Narendranath sang five more songs besides those two.

During his student days, Narendranath was known as a lead singer in Brahmo Samaj. Along with Rabindranath, he used to take part in the famous Hindu Mela started by the great Brahmo leader, Raj Narayan Basu. In 1881, Rajnarayan Basu’s daughter, Liladevi, was married to Krishnakumar Mitra in a gorgeous function at the Sadharan Brahmo Samaj Mandir. On this occasion, Rabindranath composed three songs in a classical style and taught them to Narendranath, Dr. Sundari Mohan Basu, and others. They sang these three interesting songs: dui hridayer nadi ekatre milia jadi, jagater purohit tumi, and subho dine esecche dohne charane. A few years later, Narendranath compiled a book of songs, Sangit Kalpataru, with Vaishnavcharan Basak. Along with these three songs were added two more songs composed by Rabindranath in that book. One of them, kali kali bolre aj, is a rare song on Mother Kali composed by the poet. The book was reprinted after more than a


hundred year and was released by the noted musician, Pandit Ravishankar, in Kolkata.

In an article, Prof. Kshitimohan Sen wrote that at Varanasi he had first heard the following three songs composed by Rabindranath from the lips of Narendranath: e ki sundara shobha, morilo morilo amay bansi te dekechhe ke, and sakhi amari duare keno asile. In Kolkata, at the Shyampukur house on October 27, 1885, Narendranath sang the song e ki sundara shobha in front of Sri Ramakrishna in the presence of the well-known artist, Ananda Charan Bagchi. While listening to the song, Sri Ramakrishna went into Samadhi. It is said that Swamiji also sang the following three songs composed by the poet: satya mangala premamaya tumi, yogi he ke tumi hridi asane, and tumi bandhu tumi natha. According to the Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna, Narendranath sang to Sri Ramakrishna two times the Sikh vesper song gagana thale ravi chandra deepaka jwale, originally composed by Guru Nanak, and translated by Rabindranath.

Narendranath sang these two songs at Balaram Mandir in North Kolkata on April 7, 1883, and May 9, 1885. From the same book we also come to know that the song tomarei kariachhi jibanero dhruva tara was sung by Narendranath two times: first on July 14, 1885, at Balaram Mandir on the Ratha Jatra day when Sri Ramakrishna went into Samadhi.

Later, at Shyampukur house also, Sri Ramakrishna heard this song from him.

All the songs composed by Rabindranath and sung by Narendranath were collected in a cassette tape under the direction of the doyen Shailajaranjan Majumder. The songs were sung by renowned singers of Tagore’s songs and were produced by the Purulia Vidyapith, West Bengal.

Swami Vivekananda returned to Kolkata on February 20, 1897, from his

epoch-making first visit to the West. A reception was organized on behalf of the citizens of Kolkata at Shobhabazar Rajbati on February 26, 1897. At least 5,000 people attended that meeting. Rabindranath was also present there. Sister Nivedita once hosted a tea party at her Baghbazar residence where the poet and the monk came together.

Romain Rolland, the great French thinker, artist, humanist, and Nobel Prize winner in literature was in search of spiritual inspirations from any source of the world. Being a pacifist, after the First World War, he left his country, France, and settled in Switzerland. He was attracted by Mahatma Gandhi’s doctrine of non-violence and wrote a book on him. As he was completing this book, Rabindranath Tagore came to visit him in 1926 at Villeneuve, Switzerland. During the conversation, Tagore was deeply impressed by Romain Rolland’s great interest in India and her ancient heritage. It was then that he made his famous remark to the host, “If you want to understand India, study Vivekananda. In him everything is positive, nothing negative”. Romain Rolland was very much impressed by that remark. Soon he started getting books on Ramakrishna and Vivekananda from different sources. By the end of the 1920s, he himself wrote two remarkable books on Ramakrishna and Vivekananda—The Life of Ramakrishna and Vivekananda’s Life and Gospel.

Brief History of Utsav

“U tsav is a nonprofit, cultural organization involved in promoting Bengali culture in the Sacramento Valley. Utsav was founded in 2002, with one goal: creating a positive and enjoyable experience of friendship, happiness, and harmony via our Bengali heritage. Although Utsav is predominantly a Bengali organization so far, we want to reach other communities as well. Membership in Utsav is not limited to any particular race, religion, or ethnic origin”. The Beginning: It was a fine afternoon of Saraswasti Puja of 2002. A few new Bengali arrivals in Sacramento were standing in front of 1317 Montridge Ct., El Dorado Hills, reminiscing over the Puja celebrations in their homeland in India. The participants in that gathering – Deb Saha, Udayan Chanda (UC), Arun Chowdhury, Samrat Basu, Anirban Bhattacharya, Suvayu Bose, and Joy Mukherjee – all felt the need to host their own Durga Puja in Sacramento and the idea of an organization was thus born. In an hour, they came up with the name, Utsav, first proposed by Suvayu Bose. Later, Mala Paul designed the Utsav logo.

A few weeks after that momentous gathering, several Sacramento Bengali old timers were contacted with the help of Mita Chakraborty. Everyone who we spoke to got excited to have our own Durga Puja and to have our own organization. Through this process of joyous interactions between the new arrivals and the old timers of Sacramento, Utsav found few strong pillars in the names of Adi and Mitra Choudri, Somen Nandi, Biswanath Mukherjee, and others, who had an immediate impact to make Utsav a grand success.

In July 2002, Utsav was officially formed. Adi Choudri, Deb Saha, Udayan Chanda, Arijit Chattopadhyay, and Joy Mukherjee – with smiles, happiness, and glitters in their

eyes – signed the official paperwork. We celebrated our first Durga Puja in October 2002. The participation of member families was outstanding and the joy was boundless. With time, the Utsav tree has expanded and the bondage among families grew deeper.

The baton of responsibility transferred to other able hands from the hands of those who started the organization. But the founders and senior members continued to remain very active in different roles.

Utsav membership includes 80-90 families, from which several members are elected every year to serve as officers for a year. So far, many of our members have ably served our organization with the leadership of our following Presidents:

Durga Puja; Saraswati Puja; Picnic + Annual General Meeting (AGM); etc. All our events enjoy strong participation from our children. Our next generation – for whom the exposure to Bengali culture is invaluable – is very active in our cultural programs, literary activities, and puja activities. It is gratifying to note that many of our young members, even after going to college, still come back for our Pujas and look forward to attending them.

Durga Puja, Saraswati Puja, Anandamela, India Day, California State Fair, etc.
