Concordia University announces honors list The Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma is promoting Hunger Action Month, a month-long national cam- paign to fight hunger. With distributions in 53 central and western Okla- homa counties, the Regional Food Bank depends on local community partners to get food to Oklahomans strug- gling with hunger. In Kingfisher County, the Regional Food Bank part- ners with three agencies to fight hunger: Good Samar- itan Ministries, Kingfisher Church of the Nazarene and Cashion United Methodist Church. The food bank also sup- plies food to the Jacket Pantry at Kingfisher Public Schools and Backpack for Kids programs, which send kid-friendly foods home ev- ery weekend for qualifying children. “The Regional Food Bank simply would not exist with- out support from the com- munity,” said Rodney Biv- ens, executive director. “We are grateful that our donors, volunteers, agencies and advocates support the fight against hunger in Oklahoma year round, but especial- ly during Hunger Action Month.” Some of the events taking place in the Oklahoma in support of Hunger Action Month include: •Double your donation to Food for Kids this month. Four generous donors, in- cluding Top of the World and three Oklahoma fami- lies, have offered to match every dollar donated – up to $100,000 – to help provide weekend food for chronical- ly hungry children through the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma’s Food for Kids Program. To make a tax-deductible donation to Food for Kids, or for more information about the program, visit regional- foodbank.org. •Participate in the Stu- dents Against Hunger Food Drive from Sept. 29-Nov. 7. All food donations raised through this drive stay local. For more information, or to sign up your school, con- tact Clifton Roberts at crob- [email protected]. •Volunteer at the Re- gional Food Bank. It’s a fun team-building experience for corporate groups, a bonding experience for families and a great way for church groups to come together and give back to their community. Readers should know that not all so-called tornadoes are tornadoes. Often these are just strong winds. Many of today’s plywood, light- weight mobile homes are dangerously susceptible to strong winds. A strong wind, which ac- companies a thunderstorm, can blow trailer homes off their foundations. The danger is very real in the traditional tornado path across the Midwest and South. Good advice for inhabi- tants of mobile homes is to have trailers bricked or ce- mented down. The number of tornadoes is not increasing; what is increasing is the number of homes and especially the number of mobile homes, so vulnerable to strong winds. The Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma is promoting Hunger Action Month, a month-long national cam-paign to fi ght hunger.

With distributions in 53 central and western Okla-homa counties, the Regional Food Bank depends on local community partners to get food to Oklahomans strug-gling with hunger.

In Kingfi sher County, the Regional Food Bank part-ners with three agencies to fi ght hunger: Good Samar-itan Ministries, Kingfisher Church of the Nazarene and Cashion United Methodist Church.

The food bank also sup-plies food to the Jacket Pantry at Kingfi sher Public Schools and Backpack for Kids programs, which send kid-friendly foods home ev-ery weekend for qualifying children.

“The Regional Food Bank simply would not exist with-out support from the com-munity,” said Rodney Biv-ens, executive director. “We are grateful that our donors, volunteers, agencies and advocates support the fi ght against hunger in Oklahoma year round, but especial-ly during Hunger Action Month.”

Some of the events taking place in the Oklahoma in support of Hunger Action Month include:

•Double your donation to Food for Kids this month. Four generous donors, in-cluding Top of the World and three Oklahoma fami-lies, have offered to match every dollar donated – up to $100,000 – to help provide weekend food for chronical-ly hungry children through the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma’s Food for Kids Program.

To make a tax-deductible donation to Food for Kids, or for more information about the program, visit regional-foodbank.org.

•Participate in the Stu-dents Against Hunger Food Drive from Sept. 29-Nov. 7. All food donations raised through this drive stay local.

For more information, or to sign up your school, con-tact Clifton Roberts at [email protected].

•Volunteer at the Re-gional Food Bank. It’s a fun team-building experience for corporate groups, a bonding experience for families and a great way for church groups to come together and give back to their community.

Volunteer times are avail-able Monday through Satur-day and by appointment. To sign up visit regionalfood-bank.org/volunteer.

Readers should know that not all so-called tornadoes are tornadoes. Often these are just strong winds. Many of today’s plywood, light-weight mobile homes are dangerously susceptible to strong winds.

A strong wind, which ac-companies a thunderstorm, can blow trailer homes off their foundations.

The danger is very real in the traditional tornado path across the Midwest and South.

Good advice for inhabi-tants of mobile homes is to have trailers bricked or ce-mented down.

The number of tornadoes is not increasing; what is increasing is the number of homes and especially the number of mobile homes, so vulnerable to strong winds.

It took two of the top teams in Class A to stop Okarche’s win streak, but not before the War-riors could bring home a tourna-ment title.

O k a r c h e dropped games to No. 2 Bin-ger-Oney (12-3) and No. 6 Dale (10-1) at Dale on Tuesday, putting a temporary halt to the Warriors’ hot streak.

T h e l o s s e s came after Mon-day’s 9-1 victory over Ripley to capture the Rip-ley Invitational tournament title.

That victory capped a five-game win streak and was part of eight wins in a nine-game

stretch.And this one,

like most of those before, came on the heels of a solid pitching perfor-mance.

Jay Johnson threw all six in-nings for the War-riors, allowed just two hits and the lone, unearned run.

Johnson struck out four Ripley batters.

Ripley’s run came in the bot-tom of the second, giving the home team a 1-0 lead.

H o w e v e r , Okarche struck for three runs in the top of the third and never trailed again.

J o h n s o n helped his own cause with a pair of RBIs.

G a r r e t t S c h w a r z w a s 3-for-4, drove in two runs and s c o r e d t h r e e times.

Robert Ernst-ing also had two RBIs.

Hunter Frisby and Josh Harris each drove in a run while Kyle P f a f f c o l l e c t -ed two hits and crossed home plate three times.

Okarche ad-vanced to the finals with the previous Friday’s 9-5 victory over Shidler.

The game was knotted 4-4 af-ter three innings before the War-riors put two on the board in the fourth and anoth-er in the fifth to start to pull away.

Kingfisher suffered a trio of disappointing losses Thursday when the junior high football teams traveled to Tuttle.

The freshmen were knocked off 22-6 in their season opener.

The Jackets’ lone score came when Cole Daugherty connected with Gavin Max-well for a 25-yard TD in the fourth quarter.

The defensive effort was highlighted by Thomas Ea-ton’s fumble recovery.

Both the seventh and eighth grade teams were knocked off in overtime.

The eighth grade Jackets were knocked off 20-18.

They struck early when Jesse Boutwell scored on the first play of the game, a 60-yard scamper into the Tigers’ end zone.

It was the Jackets’ defense that struck next as Logan Rutledge picked off a Tiger pass.

With a heads-up play, Rutledge lateraled to Cole

Crosswhite before he could be tackled and Crosswhite scored from 40 yards out.

Regulation ended with the teams tied at 12-12.

Tuttle got the ball first in OT and scored a touchdown and two-point conversion.

Jett Sternberger had the answer for Kingfisher as he found Tyler Borelli from 10 yards away. However, the Jackets’ two-point conver-sion was no good, allowing Tuttle to escape with the 20-18 victory.

The eighth graders dropped their season record to 1-1.

The seventh graders lost their overtime battle, 12-6.

Treyson Dunigan scored the team’s lone touchdown, a three-yard run and regu-lation ended with a 6-6 tie.

Kingfisher got the ball first in OT, but was unable to score.

Tuttle then took posses-sion and punched it in for the OT victory.

The seventh grade is 0-2.

Dover-Lomega is picking up steam at the right time in the fall baseball season.

The Longhorns have won three in a row and six of their last eight games, including Tuesday’s 8-3 victory over Class A’s 19th-ranked Arapaho-Butler/Hydro-Eakly.

That same team had beaten Dover-Lomega 6-0 earlier this season.

Dover-Lomega started the year 2-5, but has gone 9-4 since for its current 11-9

record.•••

The top area fast-pitch softball team has proven to be Crescent.

The Lady Tigers are currently 17-2 and ranked 10th in Class 2A.

They’re riding a five-game win streak that includes a recent 13-4 win over Kingfisher, which is ranked 16th in Class 4A.

Crescent also has decisive wins over Hennessey and Cashion,

though a scheduled game with Okarche was called off.

•••Cashion’s softball team is

riding its second significant win streak of the season.

The Lady Wildcats have won six in a row to boost their record to 15-9.

The current win streak put an end to a three-game losing skid. Prior to that, Cashion had won nine straight games.

Cashion’s most recent

win was a 19-9 thumping Thursday of Class 3A Heritage Hall.

•••Okarche’s softball team

sat at 14-6 after Thursday’s action in the Highway 81 Classic in Pioneer.

The Lady Warriors opened the tournament with a 14-4 win over Timberlake, but dropped an 8-0 decision to Chisholm later in the day.

Okarche is currently ranked 13th in Class B.

•••Kingfisher is also taking

part in the Highway 81 Classic.

The Lady Jackets thumped Class 6A Enid 15-0 in the tournament opener.

Frontier, ranked 14th in Class B, then dropped KHS 5-0.

The Lady Jackets were in action at press time.

After Thursday’s games, they sported a 15-8 mark.

Have you ever tried tossing an atlatl? How about goose-knock-ing? Or flint knapping? You’ll have your chance to experience all of those outdoors at the 2014 OklahomaWildlife Expo.

Presented by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Con-servation, the free event will take place from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, at the Lazy E Arena, just north of Oklahoma City.

“Your whole family will be able to see and do so many things outside on the Expo grounds,” said Rhonda Hurst, coordinator of the event for the Wildlife De-partment.
