    PREFACEIn 1902, Mrs. Henry Parsons started the First

    Children's School Farm in New York City, on thevacant lots at the foot of West 53rd Street, whereto-day is the beautiful DeWitt Clinton Park.As years went on, she learned of the work of others,

    and that the use of the garden in the education ofchildren, was begun at least as far back as five hun-dred years B.C. Many of the ideas and practiceswhich she initiated, found their main difference fromthat of others in her viewpoint of the purpose of thework; that the garden was to foster the growth ofchildren as its main object, instead of being principallyto teach them how to grow plants.

    This new viewpoint has vitalized the work, andgiven it a reason for more general use than it everhad before, and as a result, wherever children arebeing educated, the possibility of having a garden isnow being considered, and in, those states and coun-tries where primary education is showing the mostadvancement, there will be found the largest numberof Children's Gardens. During the past few years,they have increased rapidly in number, and fromnow on, they are destined to play an important partin the education of children.

    CHILDREN'S GARDENSThe formation of the Commissions on Country Life,

    and Conservation of the Nation's Resources, the greatcampaigns against Tuberculosis, and the Congestionof Population in Cities, and the Inquiry into the rea-son for the High Cost of Hving, has aroused a wide-spread agitation for popular education to meet thesequestions. As a result legislators are passing lawsrequiring the teaching of elementary agriculture, tothe confusion and consternation of the teachers, whoare appalled by the vastness of the subject, their lackof preparation, and the apparent difficulty of fittingthe new course into the curriculum for children. Theendeavor here has been to suggest working planswhich will open the way for them.In preparing this volume, it seemed wise to adhereto the type of garden in which the ideas and methodsto be shown were developed, so as to explain moreclearly each step of the work, without confusing thereader Mi'ith many exceptions and variations of pro-cedure. When the aims and methods are understood,the intelligent worker can then adapt and develop de-tails of procedure to fit local conditions.A prominent feature of the book is its illustrations,and their chief value lies in the fact that rriany ofthem are photographs taken by the author from theactual work or from his drawings and designs.The book is divided into theory and practice, and

    in the theory it takes up the values of Children's Gar-dens, and attempts to show how far reaching suchinstruction may be in forming the Nation's" people.

    CHILDREN'S GARDENSand tells of some of the knowledge now needed andeasily acquired through the medium of the garden.Under the practice, it tells how to prepare and layout the ground, and how to instruct and control chil-dren in gardens of from twenty to five hundred plots.Then, in detail, it takes up each step of the work, anddescribes how to do it.The aim throughout is to emphasize two points

    that the knowledge and training to be gained is vital,and that it can be made quite simple and delightful.

    This book should appeal to all teachers of primaryeducation, in fact, to all who have to do with the careof children; parents, heads of institutions, and physi-cians. It should also appeal to all novices at garden-ing, for, while especially for children, it has much init of value to the adult who is a beginner.

    Real estate men will find food for thought in thesuggestion that simple garden instruction will helpmany to better enjoy and be willing to stay in theirsuburban homes.

    Railroad presidents, who are searching for themeans to awaken people to a better use of the land,will find in this book perhaps the key to the situationthat a rational treatment of the subject in the schooldays of all children, will, in a few years, result inthe very spirit which they desire.

    EDUCATIONAL NEEDS TO RELIEVE POVERTY, SICKNESSAND INEFFICIENCYThroughout the United States there is the anoma-

    lous condition of a country of large natural wealthand great possibilities, on the one hand, and on theother hand, masses of people struggling with povertyand its hardships.Some sociologists teach the evils of congested cities

    and urge the poverty-stricken to go into the countryand become farmers, while at the same time farmersare complaining of unremunerative labor, unsocial con-ditions, and their children are flocking to the cities.For many persons to he poor in a zvealthy country^to be sick in a good climate^ to be inefficient among aprogressive people, is a sign of unwise educationalmethods, not of inability on the part of the people.A very necessary part of their education was omitted.They were not taught to battle with the world or meetlife's emergencies.To lessen the number of poor, sick, inefficient, and

The instructionmust begin with the children before twelve years ofage, and must be so vividly imparted as to leave in-delible impressions.To keep well and happy, to do work efficiently, to

    store up energy, and the products of energy, and makethe surplus productive, is what humanity is strivingfor. It is almost impossible for the adult to changethe habits of a lifetime, and learn anew, but withthe child, its work and play can be so planned that itwill unconsciously absorb the principles and formhabits of action that will lead to the acquisition ofhealth and happiness, thorough and profitable work,economy and thrift.The greatest source of wealth that any Nation has

    at its disposal, lies in its children. The largest itemof expense in maintaining and developing a Nationought to be that for primary education. It will givethe largest returns.Instruction must begin with the child before twelveyears of age to result in action in the man.Knowledge necessary to maintain life, health, hap-

    piness, courage and resourcefulness, should be giventhroughout all instruction, and also, knowledge neces-sary for the individual to live as a member of a well-ordered community, and protect that community'swealth and privileges.

    CHAPTER IITHE children's GARDEN IS A LABORATORY IN WHICH

    TO TEACH HOW WEALTH, HEALTH, COURAGE,ENERGY (fresh AIR AND GOOD FOOD)

    AND HAPPINESS ARE TOBE GAINEDThe Garden is the place to teach and illustrate some

    of the knowledge much needed in the education ofchildren. Here Nature shows over and over and overjust how she works. Her lessons are truthful, andthere is plenty of opportunity to verify them in theendless repetition. The child, as it develops, willwatch, absorb the lessons, and apply the knowledgein its own life.

    In no other laboratory, perhaps, does the childlearn so quickly and so clearly that " knowledge ispower." Experience with children has proven theGarden to be a great incentive to acquire that class ofknowledge which will give power what the averageman terms practical information. That method ofeducation which develops resourcefulness in the in-dividual is worthy of consideration.In the elementary education there should be sim-plicity and directness. The laws which control mental,moral and physical welfare are each year becoming

    4 CHILDREN'S GARDENSclearer, better defined, and because this is so, socialeconomists are giving more attention to preventionagainst evil. The greatest preventive measure of all,which is now rapidly assuming vast proportions, is toincorporate in the general scheme of common schooleducation, a simple, direct method of instruction innatural laws, which will result in a public that willgive intelligent and effective co-operation in the en-actment and fulfillment of laws for the public good.

    For a few thousands to take technical, complexcourses in universities, resulting in highly trainedspecialists in Civics, Sanitation, or Morals, is notenough. The public and private schools must pro-duce a general public that will co-operate ei^ciently.Educators realize this, and are earnestly working toevolve a system of instruction in the schools, whichwill give this result.The fascination of the Garden has not yet been

    shown to the general public, nor the full value of theknowledge to be gained there. To most people it is aplace to grow vegetables and flowers to supply physicalneeds, but to a few it is the theatre of Nature's mys-teries, where man can learn control of great forces.We are indebted to the powers of observation anddeduction of a certain engineer for tunnels underwater. One day he watched a species of worm con-struct its burrow by boring a short distance and thenlining the wall with a substance to strengthen it. Ashe watched, the suggestion came to him, that withmodifications this was the way for man to build tun-

    CHILDREN'S GARDENS 5nels, and since then tunnels under water have beenconstructed in this way, where before they weredeemed impossible.

    There are natural laws which have a wide appli-cation, but, to see their application in daily life, chil-dren must be guided to that point of view, which cansee in the boring of a humble worm a system of con-duct, a method of operation, that mankind may useto the great advantage and progress of his civilization.

    Wealth. In the Garden Nature is a perfect teacherof economy and thrift showing both sides of thequestion certain operations leading to production,other operations leading to barrenness. The rationalbeing can deduct simple rules for guidance that willbe practically infallible. Nature says, " Watch.Learn how I work. Bring together the materials forme to start. I will work for you with many forces.For every move you make with me, I will move manytimes for you. But if you do not learn of me howI work and what I need if you disobey my orderedplans'if you do not supply my needs, you standalone." We cannot learn how Nature works unless wewatch her at work.

    Health. (For the Individual and the Community.)The spread of the most dreaded forms of disease

    is due to ignorance of laws of hygiene and sanita-tion. A knowledge of these laws, and obedience tothem, by a very small part of the people, is almostineffective. It is the mass of people who must under-stand and obey.

    6 CHILDREN'S GARDENSAs example, malaria is carried from one person to

    another only through the bites of mosquitoes. Thenumber of mosquitoes, in most localities, can be keptdown to a very small number by well understoodmeans. They breed in standing water. Standingwater should either be removed, or covered againsttheir entrance, or supplied with fish or some familiarcreature to eat them. For one man in a communityto know this and do it is of no avail, where 100,000do not. The conditions must be reversed. The 100,-000 must do this.House flies, which breed in filth, carry disease germs

    on their feet, and every year bring sickness and deathinto thousands of homes. The public should knowthis and how to stop it. Remove the filth. Destroythe breeding places. Not in one or two homes,stables, or shops, but in every one. With proper in-struction every citizen would look upon a swarm offlies as a possible menace to his community and insistupon immediate removal of the cause.In the Garden insects play an active part. Manyof them are useful and welcome. But there is anever-ending warfare between the gardener and theinsect enemies. Here is the place to educate the childto successful combat with such enemies. No merebrute force will do. He must think and plan; studythe life history, discover the vulnerable points andstrike quickly and surely.

    Self-preservation is the first law of Nature. It hasbecome an instinct in those who have survived. Shall

    CHILDREN'S GARDENS 7our education attempt to destroy this instinct, or shallwe rather bring our educational methods to the as-sistance of the instinct, and teach the children to knowtheir friends from their enemies; to gather theirfriends about them and call upon them for assistance,and practice vigilant, intelligent warfare against allenemies.The knowledge of the danger and how to combatit must be given to the young otherwise it does not

    result in action. And the methods taught in the Gar-den while fighting the cabbage worm, white grub,aphis, blister beetle, potato bug and mole will soonbe directed also against house flies, mosquitoes, bed-bugs, lice, flies, rats, mice and kindred carriers ofdisease and destroyers of wealth.

    Sunlight and courage have intimate relationship.In the " dog watch " from two to four a. m.man is most easily frightened. His vitality is at low-est ebb. His spirit is faintest. The sun has beenaway so long. After the long night with what glad-ness he watches the east lighten with the returningsun, and feels new courage quicken in his blood.

    This is not fantasy but fact. Every night workerwill tell you. Every physician will confirm it. Thenwhy should we not plainly be instructed oftener toseek sunlight? It stimulates us to action, builds upour health and resisting power, and destroys diseasegerms.

    Fresh air, which because of the recent agitation inthe warfare against tuberculosis has been brought to

    8 CHILDREN'S GARDENSthe attention of many people, is a striking illustrationof one of the many points on which a general enlight-enment would be of immense economic value.

    That man's energy is produced quite as much fromthe air he breathes, as from the food he eats andthat as he reduces the amount, or quality of the airhe can breathe, so he reduces the amount of energy athis disposal, is a fact the public should know. Not asan interesting bit of news, but as a vital law of Nature,which it is sacrilegious to break. The child's experi-ments in the Garden in learning the needs of his plantswill give' him this knowledge, which he will apply tohimself.

    Good food. In the homes of poverty, there isoften a waste of food, because of lack of knowledge.Money and labor are spent for food of low nutritivevalue. Ignorance of food values may bring povertyand surely increases it. What a valuable aid in therelief of poverty will come from a widespread instruc-tion about garden crops and their uses. More foodwill be available. The instruction if given in the gar-den, while raising the vegetables, will never be lost,but at once begin to better the living of the well-to-do, and perhaps keep off starvation in the time of need.

    Happiness is a state of mind to be induced by work-ing in a healthy environment, at work which holds theinterest and results in product of value to the workerand the community ; stimulates his intelligence, adds tohis knowledge, ministers to his desire for beauty, andincreases his reverence for the Creator.

    enough to fit any degree of strength and activity, pro-ducing food for the body and beauty for the soul ofmankind, while surrounded by such varying delightsfor every sensory nerve as constantly to charm thedullest worker even the deficient in understanding.For those whose minds demand problems, Naturequietly surrounds them with her marvels and mys-teries, and with gentle, natural steps leads their in-telligence from understanding to understanding, tobow at last with humble reverence before the Creator,and they find that in return for knowledge and obe-dience they are given a measure of control over won-derful forces and go forth among their fellowmenthrice armed for success. The child comes naturallyand gladly to this work, but the adult who has neverknown it is surrounded with walls of habit and mis-conception that shut away beauties and delights thatstrive to reach him on every hand.

    CHAPTER III" PRODUCTION IS TRANSPORTATION "

    Good roads and progress. All over the countrythere is agitation to arouse the people to the benefitsthat follow the making of good roads. But adultshave fixed habits, and even when mentally convinced,it is practically impossible to move them to action.Let the children be taught on the garden path andthe idea fixed there will bear widespread fruit.

    To-day the child plays in the garden. To-moiTowit works as an adult. The direction given to its playto-day will decide how it will act in its work to-morrow.

    Bring the subject suddenly to a roomful of adultsand it seems too big and too far removed from them.It seems so complex and it is always apparently some-body else's business. But bring it to the child in theGarden, where he is to make his path, beside his ownlittle farm, and the problem is simple, delightful andworth while.

    It is much easier to push a wheelbarrow along asmooth path free from stones. A loaded wheelbarrowgoes easier over a hard path. A path with a raisedcenter lasts longer, and is dryer after rains, than aflat one, or one that is low in the middle. The child

    CHILDREN'S GARDENS iiwho makes this path and who pushes his loaded wheel-harrow over it finds all this reasonable and simple andknows it should be so. And it is simple to one whohas learned it this way.The teacher who loves to watch the child develop

    its thoughts and actions under his guidance will findpleasure here. First the child wants to work. Withthe garden line and spade it fixes the path as it seesthe others doing. Then it wants to work with thewheelbarrow, and carry loads. Now it begins torealize the difference in paths. The wheel bumps intostones, sinks into soft places, goes smoothly and easilyover the level hard paths.

    It only takes a few days for him to find out thathe can carry heavier loads over the paths that aresmooth, hard, level and free from stones, soft placesand ruts. The next time he fixes his path he utilizesthis knowledge.The actual amount of saving can be shown to a

    child. No class-room talk on good roads can ever beas clear, or as lasting in results, as this actual workon the garden path. From such a beginning, as thechild's instruction goes steadily on, let him read moreand more meaning into the words,

    " PRODUCTION IS TRANSPORTATION."Every saving effected in transportation, especially

    where the saving is constant and cumulative, lessensthe cost of production. Many a road has a shortsteep rise which could be removed at an expense very

    12 CHILDREN'S GARDENSmuch less than the cost of hauling over it, and whichprobably would be removed if those whose moneypays for the hauling had begun to learn about goodroads before they were twelve years old.iThe nation is thinking about these things. Now

    must begin a method of teaching the child, that willlead to wider application of the knowledge in hisadult years, and this teaching must be on the groundin the Children's Garden.

    Children should be taught that the wealth of theworld is produced by the moving of things. In theschools they should be taught how to apply this knowl-edge. Then every boy and girl, man and woman,would realize that any saving, in the cost of any step,in the production of any thing, means an increase inwealth. It is the application of this knowledge in theindividual home, by the individual person, which isneeded to relieve some of the present conditions.

    In the Children's Garden this is well illustrated, andthe results are apparent. Man cannot grow the crops,but he can move things about so that Nature willgrow them. By careful planning what things to do,when to do them, and how to do them, Nature willgive a valuable profit over the cost of the efifort, butif the work is not done well, and at the right time,there may be a slight loss in every move, resulting ina large loss as a total.Among the mass of the people this is perhaps the

    difference between those, who are going ahead andthose who are falling behind. Those who succeed

    CHILDREN'S GARDENS 13make a tiny gain on every move, and by constantstudy to improve the efficiency of what they do, theysteadily reduce the cost of movement, and increase theproduct.

    Those who fail make a tiny loss on every move, andby constant neglect to improve the efficiency of whatthey do, they steadily increase the cost of movementand decrease the product.

    This is a valuable thing to teach, and the Gardenan excellent place to teach it. All through the seasonopportunities multiply themselves to illustrate thispoint, namely, in preparing the soil, planting, weeding,watering and harvesting.

    Each bit of movement and labor is connected witha past and future effort, and the child can be guidedto study, plan, and experiment, to get large returnsfrom low cost in energy. And as a result to savesteps, labor, time, money, strength and health, andgain larger net returns in vegetables, flowers, health,strength, pleasure and knowledge, for himself and forhis fellowmen.

    OTHER THAN GARDENINGThe garden work teaches the child to think about

    what he is doing, and the manner of doing it.It teaches, observation of how others work, and

    leads to the application of better methods to his ownwork; the value of orderliness and system for generaleconomy and effectiveness; how to direct his strengthby education and thus to direct others, and the valueof planning a series of actions to obtain a desired re-sult.The child must be guided to find out things through

    his own efforts and experiments, and given that kindand amount of assistance which will open the way,keep up interest, and avoid discouragement.The pedagogy of the spade. Applied physics and

    economy of effort; development of reason and its ap-plication, as taught through the use of the spade.

    If he looks for the operation of these laws in eachstep of his work, he will soon discover a means greatlyto enhance the amount and quality of his spading withthe strength he has. And this may change a difficulttask to an easy one, or an unpleasant task to a pleasantone, or an apparently impossible task to a possible one.

    Think of what such a conception may mean to aboy as he faces the world. He will say, " There is amethod of doing things well and that method is basedon fundamental laws. If I learn what they are anduse them it will make my life much more happy andsuccessful." He may not say these words, but he willabsorb the general idea and spirit and it will soonshow in his work.

    2. To teach that a small point will enter moreeasily than a large one. The corner of a spade willenter the earth when the ground is too hard to admitthe whole edge at once, and a spade moved sidewiseunder pressure, will also enter more easily than whenpushed straight down. From the doing and observingof such things one can learn how to accomplish manytasks more easily, even if one never learns the scientifictheories regarding a wedge, and a cutting edge. Theknowledge can be applied to mental tasks as well asphysical ones.

    4. To teach economy of personal strength by usingthe weight, when possible, instead of the muscles.In the many daily tasks muscle is often used whereweight would do instead. Usually this means wastedstrength, and frequently the weight, when it is used,is not used to good advantage.In teaching persons to use a spade this is very ap-parent. When they have learned how to step on thespade and press it into the ground without stampingtheir feet sore, and realize how much more economyof energy they have learned, they begin to apply thisknowledge to other tasks.It is this wider application that makes the first in-struction valuable. The energy economy becomescumulative as one task after another is lightened bythis knowledge. It is a good practical habit to seekknowledge that will have a cumulative value.

    5. To teach the value of doing each part of an opera-tion so as to save labor (or material) in each futurestage of the work. In spading, the earth can he sohandled that the final grading and raking is reducedto a minimum. This affords a valuable opportunityto point out how to save work by planning aheadand making each operation count for as much as pos-sible. In garden work this point will have many im-mediate and obvious illustrations. In teaching chil-dren we need prompt illustrations, often repeated, toleave lasting impressions. And the illustrations are

    6. To teach the value of an instant's relaxation atcertain points in a series of movements. This doesnot need so much emphasis because the body willforce it upon the attention. If the value of the econ-omy of strength was realized more fully, moments ofrelaxation would be inserted and the work improvedby doing so, and many an unnecessary breakdown beprevented.

    In a task that is requiring concentrated effort, ora fixed position, the strain is great, A person spadingsteadily, without any moment of relaxation, will soontire, but there are two well-marked places where theycan rest for a fraction of a second, and should do soto avoid rapid exhaustion just after pushing thespade into the ground, and just after the completedoperation. Both rests come while standing upright.With this knowledge applied, one can spade very muchlonger without tiring.

    7. To teach the individual speed limit. This canbe well taught in spading, and is a valuable thing tolearn, for it has a wide application. Each individualworker has a certain speed of working at which hewill do his very best, and if he works either faster orslower the result will not be as good. To work tooslow results in lack of attention. To work too fastresults in slipshod work. Every individual has a dif-ferent speed limit for good continuous work.

The boy or man whois spading at his best speed, is paying attention tohis work, and using all the energy that his body cansupply easily and without strain. Slower work meanssome surplus energy not used on the spading. Thissurplus leads to looking around, talk on other sub-jects, the mind on other things. Hence work of lowerquality, as well as smaller quantity.

    Faster work means inattention to details, hencepoor quality ; greater likelihood of mistakes and morerapid exhaustion due to the overload on the body en-gine. When this is repeated the engine wears outrapidly, whether boy or man, steam or gasoline. If aperson has to work steadily, day after day, and turnout good product, he should learn his speed limit, andadhere to it.

    Paymasters have calculated that a certain piece ofwork that a man will do in one day for $i.oo, he willdo in one-half day for $2.00, or in one-quarter dayfor $4.00, and the same general rule applies to un-pleasant work. What a man will do for $1.00 a dayfor pleasant work, he will do for $2.00 a day for dis-agreeable work, or $4.00 a day for very disagreeableand annoying work. What a man will do for $1.00 aday for very safe work, he will do for $2.00 a dayfor slightly dangerous work, or $4.00 a day for riskywork, or $8.00 a day for very hazardous work.

    The garden is an excellent place to learn the differ-ence between true and false economy. Merely toavoid spending is not economy. But to spend in sucha way as to average the largest returns in net profit,is true economy. Actual money is not the only thingthat can be spent wastefully in a garden, but alsolabor, time, strength, seeds, manure, water, air, andmuch else, and net profit need not be measured inactual cash but profit should be desired, and anamount of profit that will make labor worth while.

    If the garden is being conducted for cash returnsit should give returns approximate to what could beearned in other pursuits. If health is the object, healthshould not be sacrificed for some other form of profit.If knowledge is the object, the garden should be madea laboratory for investigation. Many a future com-mercial and home garden will give returns in knowl-edge, health and cash where the owner learned thesefirst principles in the School Garden.

    Education applied in economy of effort. Practicalproblems will lead the boy and girl to logical reasoningbetter than any other method.

    AFTER VIIPLAY

    A Children's Garden should be conducted in such amanner as to satisfy the wholesome desire for play.The best results will be gained from the work doneat the age when this desire to play is strongest. Chil-dren play with a great deal of earnestness and withmuch activity, and at the time when the garden ismost beneficial in their education their plays consistin imitating the pursuits of their elders. The childrenwill heartily enjoy playing at gardening, or house-keeping, or carpentry, so long .as the work is wellwithin their strength and limited to short periods ofattention.

    Just as the small chick loves to run out into theworld and quickly back again to the warmth and pro-tection of the mother wing, so the child loves to playat doing work and imitate grown-ups, especially inthe arts and trades, if there is plenty of opportunityfor change and rest.For the Nation's safety the Nation's children must

    CHAPTER VIIICIVIC TRAINING BY MEANS OF THE INDIVIDUAL PLOTUp to the time when the child reaches school age

    it has been very dependent upon everyone it comes incontact with, especially the mother, and for severalyears after this it will be a dependant and an infantin the eyes of the law. At no period of its life incivilized communities will it ever be strictly independ-ent, but there should be a well-developed sense ofself-reliance and desire to carry on independent think-ing and effort. Before teaching co-operation, in-struction should come in developing individualism.The higher and more complex the civilization the moredependent is each upon all the rest of the community.Co-operation and independence go hand in hand, butwithout an early and sound instruction in personalprivilege and duty the enforced dependant tends to-ward a shirking of public responsibility, except in thoseof most pronounced character. Therefore, it shouldbe the duty of the system of education to train indi-viduals to know their rights. A community, like achain, is only as strong as its weakest link and theeffort should be made to raise the standard of theaverage and the mass rather than to add more strengthto those already strong.

    world as an individual to earn its living, protect itshealth, assume its burden of taxes and its share ofpublic morals. A great many children must under-take these responsibilities at an age when they arevery easily misled by their environment, and severalyears under the age when the law declares them nolonger infants. Our present public school system isan absolute monarchy and hardly in the slightest de-gree does it give any training in a moral assumptionof personal responsibility and independent thinking.In fact, those bolder natures who decline to live in anabsolute monarchy and declare for individualism intheir instruction and rebellion against all that absolutemonarchy implies, here, in our American Republic, areplaced under the ban of the law and kept, against theirwills, in schools that are virtually prisons. These arethe boys and girls who play truant and they playtruant usually because they love out-of-doors with apassion not to be subdued, and they cannot under-stand the need for learning things that they cannotuse. The Children's Garden, based on the individualplot and all that it means, is the best opportunity toteach good civics without interfering with the presentschool regulations.

    The plotstake

    This will furnish excellent shop work. From planedlumber six inches wide and one-half inch thick, sixinch squares are sawed off. The uprightis made of inch square strips sawed ineighteen inch lengths. The six inchsquare is nailed at the top with the grainof the wood at right angles to the upright.The stake is then painted with a thin coatof green paint well rubbed in so as to leaveno thick spots or drops. Stencils for twoand a half inch numbers are then madefrom thin cardboard by copying from otherstencils or tracing numbers cut from a large size cal-endar. These are placed on the front of the stakeand with a soft lead pencil the outline of the numberis traced in. With thick white or red paint theseoutlines are then filled in, using a small camel's hair

    way the child gets'some very good prac-tice in carpentry,painting and letter-ing, and can turn outa very workmanlikeproduct. Thesestakes are quite dura-ble and need not be

    It is placed at the middle of one end of the child'splot. If the ground is hard, to avoid breaking theplot stakes by hammering them into the ground, usea pointed stick and wooden mallet to make the holefirst.

    Cultivating stick. This is made of a piece of woodwhittled to fit the hand, and with a point. Hard wood

In Children's Gardens where the plotsare quite small the cultivating stick will do all of thework necessary after the planting, and can be madeto take the place of the hoe, rake and trowel. It ismade by the children themselves. In some Gardenswhere there is no money to purchase' tools all thefirst preparation of the Garden can be done with bor-rowed tools and these cultivating sticks can finishthe work throughout the season.

    If these sticks are made of hard wood, like oak,they will prove more serviceable, but the child shouldlearn to use whatever wood is at hand, selecting thebest. The finding out by use that hard wood willhold a point when soft wood will not, or that theend of a stick can be pointed by burning and rub-bing, when no knife is available, and that its pointis harder because of the burning, makes excellentnature study.

    Children using a stick the size of a lead pencil havegained manual dexterity which has been of direct bene-fit in teaching them to write and draw. The effecton deficient children has been especially noticed.

    Garden lines. The garden line is very importantand is too often neglected in Children's Gardens. Itshould be used wherever a straight line is desired,and for making curves and circles. In placing theline the stick at each end is pushed into the grounduntil the line is down to or just under the surface,

    42 CHILDREN'S GARDENSwhich will hold it firmly. Let the children learn howmuch more strain can be put on a line fastened thisway, than where the strain is from the top of thestick, several inches above the ground.For large garden lines, it is wise to buy the kind

    regularly sold for this purpose, because it is light,and stretches very little. These lines should be aslong as the garden. At least one is needed and sev-eral, if possible. Old broom handles of hard woodmake good end sticks.For small lines, to be used on the individual plots,

    a large size mason cord is excellent, but any firmtwine will serve the purpose. These should be longenough to go the length and across one end of thefour by eight foot plots. A little over twelve feetlong. The end sticks should be of hard wood.

    Seed bottles for planting. There should be onebottle for each kind of seed used in the children's plots.Ten to fourteen ounce bottles will hold enough seedsfor thirty plots. Be sure the necks are large enoughfor the seeds to pour out easily. Each set of theseshould have a special small hand carrier made for it.

    Seed bottles for study. Small boxes, containing anumber of small glass vials with seeds to be studied,are convenient. The labels may be placed inside thevials. In large Gardens each teacher should have oneof these sets for frequent reference.Hand carriers. These are useful in themselves, and

    important in the child's education. When gatheringweeds or trash, the child should learn to put them

When the children'splots are ready for planting and the surface raked fineand level, a short time before the planting lesson isgiven, an instructor, or one of the older children, takesthe marking board to each end of each plot and placingit square across, with the central cleat right on themiddle line, steps on the board and presses the cleatsinto the earth. This makes five marks at each endto show just where the furrows are to be.Purpose of the marking board. By the use of thismarking board many plots can be marked rapidly and

    Sieves.A set of these are very useful, to separatesoil from raked-up trash, to get fine soil for pottingand experiments, and to separate soil to see the differ-ent particles which make it. They should be of dif-ferent sizes to nest when they are put away.Make scjuare frames of planed inch lumber of any

    desirable size, from one to two feet square, and nailwire mesh to these. Hardware stores usually keep allthe different-sized meshes needed.Wooden mallet. The wooden mallet consists oftwo pieces, the head and the handle. For the head amaple branch that has been lying on the wood pilefor a year is excellent. Saw off a suitable piece.Bore an inch hole through the head midway ._..g....between the ends. Shape the handle smooth ^and round, a little smaller than the hole inthe head, except for about one inch at oneend, which should be larger than the hole.Insert the small end of the handle into thehole and push the head down until it sticks. ^XtA couple of light taps with the hammer onthe outer end of the handle will secure the head. Toremove the handle tap the inner end. The end shouldprotrude about an inch.

    Raking. To separate and remove trash, use a rakewith teeth at least one inch apart. Hold the handleof the rake nearly upright. When the rake is on the

    In teaching children to use the rake it is wise touse those made of malleable iron because when theyare bent they can be straightened again easily andwithout breaking. These are also much cheaper thansteel rakes. For smoothing the earth to obtain a veryfine surface use the back of the rake. Rake handlesshould be marked for such measures as will be needed.The best way is to burn rings on the handle, markinginches and feet.Spading (right handed). In spading place the right

    hand on top of the spade handle and the left hand be-side it. Place the left foot on the foot rest and pressdown firmly, using the weight of the body withoutstamping. If the ground is hard the right corner ofthe spade can be inserted first and the spade straight-ened as it is pushed down. This will make the spadego in much easier, just as it is easier to push the pointof a knife in. When the spade has been pushed intothe ground to the depth of the blade, lean backwardon the handle until the spadeful of earth has beenbroken loose, and while the body is bent over slidethe left hand down to within a few inches of the

    the rake handles, in inches and feet.Watering pots.A six quart pot is large enough

    for the average child. Usually the holes in thesprinkler are too small, and should be enlarged. Do

The wire hoopsof flour barrels can often be furnished by the childrenand are about the right size wire. The handle can bewhittled from a piece of pine, and string is quite com-mon. The materials are put together as follows :The wire is bent into a circle and the two ends arebound to the end of the handle for a distance of three

    or four inches. The tips of these wire ends are bentat right angles and inserted into the holes in thehandle to keep the wire from twisting. In bindingthis wire to the handle it should be carefully andneatly done, with both ends, turned in and withoutknots. If the butterfly net is to be used vigorouslyand often, it is economical to get more serviceable ma-terials.

    Probably the best is to make the hoop and handleof one continuous piece of suitable rattan, about thesize of the little finger. If it is soaked in water fora day and then bent about a form made by drivingnails or pegs of wood in a board and then the handleis bound while it is wet, it will remain in tha. shapewhen dry. The net is made of bobbinet, which costsmore than the mosquito netting, but is much stronger.

    Poison jar. After the butterfly has been capturedit should be quickly placed in a poison jar to stupefyand kill it quickly, so that it will not damage itself bystruggling to escape. A good form of poison jar ismade of the Atlas Special preserve jar, which has an

Into this place a pieceof cyanide of potassium about as big as the thumb.Cover this with plaster of paris, add enough water toharden it, and leave the cover off for about an hourto dry; after this, keep the cover on tight to retainthe poisonous gas. This material is very poisonousand should not be played with. The jar should becarefully marked in large letters POISON, and withthe usual skull and cross-bones label.

    Spreading board. After the insect is dead, butwhile it is still soft and moist, it should be pinned tothe spreading board in whatever position you wish itto remain when mounted, and left in this positionuntil it is thoroughly dry. It is fastened to the boardwith pins and smallstrips of heavy paperor thin cardboard.Ordinary pins can beused but regular in-sect pins are moresatisfactory. Theycan be purchased, inseveral sizes. Theyare longer and thin-ner than ordinarypins.The spreading board should be made of soft, white

They should not be left too long wherespiders may reach them because spiders are apt toeat the bodies of the insects, especially butterflies.Mounts. After the insects are dry they can be

    placed in mounts for permanent preservation. Thereare three good kinds of mounts. One is a carefully-made wooden box with a glass cover and the insects canbe arranged in this by fastening them with pins stuckthrough them. Another, called the Riker mount, is acardboard box filled with cotton on which the insectsare laid, and the glass cover pressed down. Thisshows only one side of the insect. Another kind iscalled the Denton mount. This is all of glass andholds the insect in such a manner as to be able to seeboth sides of it.

    If caterpillars are to be preserved with the butter-flies they can be placed in small bottles with dilutedformalin and corked up.For printed information about insects the United

    Small towels, just large enough for two pair ofhands, were hemmed by the sewing class. The chil-dren dried their hands and placed the towels in aconvenient basket or box. These towels were laun-dered by the Domestic Science class. This planworked well.

To intelligently answer his" Why," not merely with words but with object les-sons in work which he performs himself, is one ofthe better means of maintaining his interest and teach-ing him to turn out workmanlike product. Keep theshare of work, and the kind of work, well within thestrength of each individual. Overfatigue is a com-mon source of lack of interest.

    Let us suppose a piece of ground covered withstones and rubbish and rather poor soil. Divide thechildren into groups. Give each group a section toclear of everything easily movable.

    Children dearly love to use wheelbarrows. If thereis a place nearby to dump what is cleared off, it canbe carried there in wheelbarrows. If not, put it inpiles in the least objectionable place and plant run-ning vines, like pumpkin, to cover it.When the larger materials are cleared away, startthe raking to gather up the rubbish. Small storesare not objectionable. Use as many rakes as possible and keep the rakers in a line. Give each a spaceof about six feet wide to rake. Have them leave theraked-up material in piles to be removed with wheel-barrows. Undesirable rubbish that cannot be carriedaway may be burned or buried. A handbarrow is afair substitute for a wheelbarrow, and is made of abox with two side bar handles, and carried by twoor four children; or a contrivance like the IndianTravois, two poles lashed at one end, with the other

Remove the top soil and place ina pile at one side, so as to put it back on the top whenfilling in again. Then dig a hole large and deepenough to bury the object, and have two feet of soilon top when covered. When the hole is large enough,undermine the stone or log carefully, so it will notroll in unexpectedly and hurt the workers. Then withcrowbars or poles work it into the hole, cover it upand level the surface.

    After the ground has been cleared, spread themanure and then begin the spading.Show the children how to economize strength inspading by using weight and avoiding all unnecessarylifting. Keep the spading line straight. Watch thesmaller and weaker children, and do not let themoverdo. Those who do not have weight or strengthto spade deep enough should be given something elseto do, or it will be regretted later. They will ap-parently spade as much as those who are doingthorough work, but will only go down two or threeinches, the bad effect of which will not show untilit is too late to remedy it. Do not let the childrenrun about on the freshly spaded earth of the garden.After a strip of about four feet wide has beenspaded let it be raked level and smooth by childrenstanding on the unspaded portion. Thus, by spading

    to contain the manure. Put the manure in, pack itdown well and cover with two inches of earth. Ifmanure is to be collected throughout the year for thefollowing season, a thin covering of earth should beplaced over each lot put in. There will then be notrouble from odor or flies. Such pits are better ifthey have a puddled clay bottom. Anything that willmake humus can go into this pit, if the material is tostand for a year or more.Uses for material gathered in clearing up.Stones. Some may be placed around the hydrant to

    avoid mud. Others broken with a hammer and usedin making large paths. Keep some for use in soiltalks.

    Weeds. Put in the manure pit for humus.Wood. To be burned. Have a special place for

    the fire with a stone floor to save all ashes to beused for fertilizer. Burn all stumps, roots and woodnot useful for construction. Gather the ashes andkeep dry until used.

    Glass, chum, umbrella frames, tin cans, bottles andsimilar rubbish can be turned into apparatus for ex-periments.

    middle path is to be. On this line, at the point wherethe main east and west path is to cross, make astraight line at right angles (see note at end of chap-ter). These two cross lines, at right angles to eachother, one going north and south, the other east andwest, will be the middle of the two large paths, whichshall divide the Garden into quarter sections. Theoutside boundary of a large oblong should now befound, the opposite sides of which should be paralleland at right angles to the first cross lines made.The measuring from now on should always begin

    from the center lines and work away from them. Itis desirable to have the measurements quite accurate;therefore, use a measure that will not stretch. Somecloth tape measures do stretch. A steel one is prefer-able.To mark out the main paths. At the north endmeasure two feet on each side of the center line and

    mark with stakes. At the south end measure twofeet on each side of the center line and mark withstakes.
