4. Communication with Parents School Level To facilitate communication between School and Home, Wednesdays during term time, have been set aside as Communication Day. A Weekly Parents’ Notification will be issued electronically via McOnline, the Learning Management System our students will be using for E-Learning this year. Instructions to Parents/Guardians on how to sign up for McOnline will be disseminated on a later date. Parents not on a phone data plan will receive hard copies of the notification through the younger/youngest child studying in the school. For the time being, hard copies of the Notification will be printed and issued to all students. The Weekly Notification serves to keep Parents/Guardians informed of school matters such as policies and guidelines, upcoming school events and announcements. Past weekly notifications will be uploaded onto the school website at http://www.changkatpri.moe.edu.sg/ under “Weekly Notifications” for your reference. All other letters/circulars (eg letters written by the Year Heads and Assistant Year Heads providing details of programmes and activities pertaining to the level) and consent forms (eg for outings) will be given out on Wednesdays as well. Class Level Parents needing to seek clarifications on class-related matters are encouraged to contact the teachers via the following channels:

Student Handbook- Aside from allowing students to note down instructions pertaining to homework and other school and class-related matters, Teachers may also leave messages for parents in the Student Handbook. To ensure that messages are received, Teachers and Parents will check for signatures under the Column “Noted by Parent/Teachers”

Leaving short messages with General Office- The messages will be relayed to the teachers concerned. Parents who would like to speak or meet up with the teachers are strongly encouraged to fix a time to do so via Short Messages.

Emails- Form Teachers and Mother Tongue Language Teachers will be sharing their email addresses during the first Meet-Parents- Session of the year on Saturday, 16 Jan 2016.

As far as possible, Teachers will revert to Parents’ queries within 3 working days

from the day of receipt of messages. I would like to seek your understanding that Teachers may not be immediately available to respond to phonecalls or requests for meet-up as they may be having lessons in class or are involved in a meeting or workshop. As a rule, the school does not expect Teachers to share their personal phone numbers with Parents/Guardians. For Teachers/AEDs who have shared their handphone numbers with Parents and Guardians, please note that they will only be responding the next working day to text messages received between between 6 pm and 7.30 am on weekdays and whole day on weekends and school/public holidays. The same applies for email messages received after office hours.

5. Format of the Weekly Notification To help Parents understand the underlying rationale as to the basis of school’s approach to decision making and programme design, information in the Weekly Notification will be aligned to the School’s Culture of Care, Collaboration, Learning and Excellence and Strategic Thrusts which are as follow: Strategic Thrust (ST1): Growing the 21st century learner ST2 : Growing Competent, Engaged & Happy Staff ST3 : Fostering Effective Partnership The event calendar records activities running from Wednesday of the current week to Tuesday of the following week.

7. Induction Programme for Parents/Guardians of Pr 1 students We would like to thank all parents/ guardians of Pr 1 students for your strong support and cooperation during the first 2 days of school. We are heartened by the good attendance at the 2-day induction programme planned for parents/guardians and grateful for the encouraging feedback on the talks and

briefings. To help improve our planning next year, we would like to invite parents / guardians who had attended the talks/briefings to complete a survey which will be given out to your child today with the Weekly Notification and submit it to the form teacher by Wednesday, 13 Jan 2016. Your feedback is important and greatly appreciated.

8. School Operational Matters Culture of Care, Collaboration, Learning and Excellence ST3

8.1 School Policy – Handphone Usage by Students We understand that Parents/Guardians may at times require your children to bring handphones to school. As such, we would like to share the school policy pertaining to the use of handphones in school. The policy is meant to ensure that students are focused during lesson time and not distracted texting or playing with phone functions. Handphones must be switched off and should be in the student’s pocket at all

times. Calls, if any, can only be made at the foyer (near the car porch) or Parents’ Corner.

Handphones must be handed over to the teacher during PE lessons for safe keeping.

Students who are found to have breached the school rule will have their handphones confiscated by the teachers and Parents/Guardians informed. Parents/Guardians will be required to personally collect the handphones from the school’s Operation Manager (OM). Please note also that the school shall not be held responsible for any loss of or damage to the children’s handphones. Students must be responsible for the care of their handphones. Parents/ Guardians of students who are bringing handphones to school are required to complete and return the acknowledgement slip attached below to the class form teachers by Wednesday, 13 Jan 2016. For your information, there are coin-operated phones in the canteen for Students’ use. 8.2 Student Handbook- School Code of Conduct (page 13-15) Parents and Guardians are requested to go through with your children the School CODE OF CONDUCT in the Student Handbook and put your signature at the bottom of page 15. Form Teachers will be checking for your signatures on Wednesday, 20 Jan 2016. 8.3 School Hours and Reporting Time School will function from 8.00 am to 2.00pm daily. Henceforth, 8 am – 2pm will be referred to as “Curricular or School Hours”. Morning pre-assembly activities commence at 7.30 am. Children reporting after 7.40 am are deemed to be late for school.

Culture of Care, Collaboration, Learning and Excellence ST3

8.4 Parents taking their children out of school during term time/curricular hours During the course of the year, Parents/Guardians are urged not to take your child/children out during school days or curricular hours (between 8 am to 2 pm) for private matters such as attendance of weddings. This is, as compared to the case of a child who is out of school due to illness for which a valid medical

certificate should be submitted to the form teachers for recording purpose. Taking your child/children out of school during term time or curricular hours disrupts learning and may result in your child/children having difficulty following up with lesson proper when he/she/they return(s) to school. Your cooperation in this matter is thus deeply appreciated.

8.5 Students returning from medical leave For students returning to school after being on medical leave, their medicate certificates (MC) must indicate the duration that they are to refrain from participating in physical activity. Parents/Guardians will need to remind the doctors to indicate this information in the MC for PE teachers’ follow up.

8.6 Snack time (Pr 1-3: 12.25-12.35 pm; Pr 4-6: 12.55-1.05 pm) In view of school dismissal at 2pm, Snack Time has been scheduled to allow students to have something light to eat before lunch. This time has also been scheduled with the intention of providing students with a Brain Break after long hours of seat work. As pupils are not allowed to go down to the canteen during Snack Time, Parents and Guardians are advised to pack food for your child/children or provide him/her/them with sufficient pocket money to buy extra food during recess to be eaten during Snack Time. Parents/Guardians are also advised of the following pointers when preparing food for consumption during Snack Time:

Pack nutritious food eg wholesome sandwiches rather than potato chips

Pack food that your child enjoys eating rather than what you think your child should eat. This will ensure that your child finishes all his/her food during Snack Time.

If necessary, cut the food such as pizza up into smaller pieces so that it is easier and faster to chew.

Avoid packing food that is soupy or accompanied with lots of gravy. This will reduce messiness during food consumption in the classroom.

8.7 School’s Traffic Management Plan The school’s traffic management plan has been reviewed, taking into consideration road works currently under way outside the school. We would like to take this opportunity to advise you on the new plan for Semester 1 (4 Jan – 27 May 2016). Do note that this traffic management plan will be reviewed for Semester 2 when PERI ppgrading work is due to start. Parents and Guardians will be informed of this updated plan in due course. Before School starts (ie before 7.40 am) 1. For parents and pupils who walk to school along Simei St 3 on the side of

Changkat Changi Secondary, we would urge that you walk into Changkat Changi Secondary and enter the school from the side gate connecting both schools. This is a much safer route than crossing the road in front of the school’s main gate, especially during the busy period between 6:50am to 7:25am.

2. Parents who are driving will be allowed to drive into the school to drop off your child/children. We seek your cooperation to be patient since there will be heavy traffic in the morning. As such, Parents are advised to plan your trip earlier as students will be booked for late-coming if they reach the school foyer after 7.40 am. Parents who are driving may also want to consider dropping off your

School Values: Patriotism, Resilience, Integrity, Discipline and Empathy

6

child/children at the HDB carpark behind Block 101. Your child/children will then be able to use the traffic light pedestrian crossing to make his/her/their way to school.

At school dismissal & after supplementary / remedial classes / CCAs 1. The school’s main gate will be open at 2.15pm every day, after the school

buses have departed. Parents will then be able to drive in to pick up your child/children at the school porch.

2. We would like to seek Parents’ assistance in communicating clearly to your child/children the meeting points (for dry and wet weather) from which he/she/they will be picked up after school.

3. During wet weather, all students who are walking home will be dismissed

from the Parents’ Corner. Students from Pr 1 and 2 will be dismissed at

1.50pm while the remaining levels will be dismissed at 2.00pm. This is to

facilitate smooth movement out of the side gates. We would like to urge all

parents/guardians to cooperate by not crowding around the dismissal points

or the side gates as this would prevent students from exiting the school

compound smoothly and safely.

During school holidays 1. For students involved in CCAs and other school programmes, Parents will be

allowed to drive into the school to drop off or pick up your child/children. For Parents who are driving, do note the following:

Our children’s safety is a priority of the school. We urge all parents to play their part and slow down as you approach the vicinity of the school, and when driving within the school’s compound.

Do take note that right turn (in the direction of Simei MRT) is prohibited when you are exiting the school between 6.30 and 8 in the morning.

We strongly discourage Parents from stopping your vehicle along Simei St 3 to drop off your child/children or parking your vehicle by the roadside while waiting for your child/children. This is to facilitate smooth traffic flow along Simei Street 3, especially in view of the road works and the school’s proximity to Changi General Hospital.

Due to security considerations, we do not allow parents to park your vehicles in school while waiting for your child/children. We urge parents to plan your trip to the school so that you do not end up stopping your vehicle and waiting along Simei St 3.

Parents and Guardians should note that Traffic Enforcement Officers from LTA may be stationed along Simei Street 3 from time to time. As such, errant drivers may be booked. For the safety of your child/children, our students and fellow road users, we strongly urge you to adhere to the traffic regulations and rules. We seek your fullest support and understanding in this.

8.8 Safety and Security Procedures The school has put in place several procedures to ensure the safety and security of your children: Parents are only allowed into the school premises if they:

o need to fetch your child/children home early (before dismissal time)

Culture of Care, Collaboration, Learning and Excellence

School Values: Patriotism, Resilience, Integrity, Discipline and Empathy

7

o have an appointment with the Principal, Vice-Principal and/or teachers o need to make any enquiry at the General Office

All visitors, including parents, must report to the Security Guard Post at the Main Gate before proceeding to General Office. Parents are not allowed to enter the school through the side gates. In case your child is not well while in school, the school will contact Parents/Guardians to make arrangements to fetch him/her home. For safety reasons, the school will not release the child to return home on his/her own. A trusted adult (eg Domestic helper or relative other than parents) will need to come by school to fetch the child home. To inculcate in students responsibility and independence, Parents are discouraged from

o purchasing food from the canteen and items from the school bookshop. Students are expected to make their own purchases rather than rely on their parents.

o delivering your child’s personal items (e.g. pocket money, books, stationery, and food) through the General Office and Security Post. Students need to learn to be resilient and face up to consequences for forgetting to bring what is required for use in school.

o Students are strongly discouraged from bringing to school expensive personal belongings such as branded stationery, electronic games, handphones etc to prevent loss of or damage to the items.

We seek your co-operation in adhering to the procedures listed above and make the school safe for our children.

Supplementary classes involve whole Pr 6 classes and are meant to provide time for in-depth teaching and learning as well as serve as a buffer against instructional time losses due to school/public holidays. Remedial

Culture of Collaboration, Care, Learning and Excellence ST1 and ST3

8.13 Afternoon Bus service The school has made arrangements with the bus vendor to provide Afternoon Bus service to students on Tuesdays and Thursdays after supplementary/remedial/enrichment lessons. Please note, however, that provision of this service is dependent on whether we have a critical number of 18, below which the service will be withdrawn.

8.14 CCA participation Pr 3 students who wish to join a CCA are to refer to the letter of invite which is issued with this week’s notification for more information. Pr 4, 5 and 6 pupils who do not have a CCA and are keen to join one are to approach the respective CCA teacher-in-charge for a CCA application form. CCA membership is rolled over from 2015 to 2016. A pupil who is already a member of a CCA is to consult the teacher-in charge for permission to switch to another CCA. We would like to reiterate that CCA participation is not compulsory. However, once students have signed up and have been accepted into a CCA, they are expected to attend all CCA sessions for the whole year. This is to inculcate in the pupils responsibility and commitment, important qualities that will stand them in good stead for lifelong learning.
