Urban renovation in Bologna

The project is located in a neighbor-hood in the northeast of the city of Bologna, nowadays abandoned because of the pres-ence of the highway and the railway tracks, where runs the waterway of the Navile. The proposed project aims to rehabilitate this place, transforming it into a pole of inter-est, culture, education and residence ready to welcome the new University of Bologna, which is currently under construction. Along the river runs a long promenade that starts from the station and arrives in the suburbs connecting the different public and private facilities provided including a library, a school, a theater, houses, offices and showrooms.

Il progetto è situato in un quartiere a Nord-Est della città di Bologna, poco frequentato a causa a causa della presenza dell'autostrada e della ferrovia, dove scorre il corso d'acqua del Navile. L'intervento proposto consiste in una ria-bilitazione di questo luogo trasformandolo in un luogo di interesse, cultura, istruzione e residenza pronto ad accogliere il nuovo polo universitario di Bologna, attualmente in fase di costruzione. Lungo le rive si snoda una lunga prome-nade che parte dalla stazione e arriva in per-iferia collegando le diverse strutture pubbli-che e private previste tra cui una biblioteca, una scuola, un teatro, abitazioni, uffici e sale espositive.

This urban project is located south of the Lyon's Presqu'Île, in the municipalities of Mulatière, Oullins and Pierre-Bénite. Today, this strip of land 4 km long is im-prisoned between the A7 highway and the railway. Following the model of the linear city, the project proposes a continuity between existing public spaces of the city center and those we have rehabilitated in the south. Once established a urban group strat-egy, 4 individual projects have been devel-oped including the reuse of the riverfront of the Yzeron through the creation of a residen-tial and commercial complex that connects the center of Oullins to the river Rhone. So this is both a urban and disctrict scale project.

Questo progetto urbano è situato a sud della Presqu'Île lionese, nei comuni della Mulatière, Oullins e Pierre-Bénite. Oggi, questo lembo di terra lungo 4 km è imprigionato tra l'autostrada A7 e la ferrovia. Seguendo il modello di città lineare, il progetto propone una continuità tra gli spazi pubblici esistenti del centro città e quelli che abbiamo riabilitato più a Sud. Dopo aver individuato una strategia urba-na di gruppo, sono stati sviluppati 4 progetti individuali tra cui quello della riqualificazione del lungofiume dell'Yzeron tramite la creazi-one di un complesso residenziale e com-merciale che collega il centro di Oullins al corso del fiume Rodano. Si tratta dunque di un progetto a scala urbana e di quartiere.

Stratégies et Pratiques Architecturales Avancées (SPAA)

Mikado is a project that takes place on the current site of the prison of Saint-Paul, not far from the station of Perrache in Lyon. The idea of the project is generating a multitude of uses and programs: the building hosts in fact 15.000m2 of parking, 3,000m2 of commercial, 5.000m2 of tertiary, 10,000m2 of university facilities, 5.000m2 of sports and of 2.000m2 exhibition space. The design of the facade announces the variety of space inside, defining for each lever a system of steel beams that form a horizontal pattern every time different. This design transposes the external environ-ment inside the building and defines voids on each floor that allow the insertion of light structural shafts. The project, with its 25m of height, be-comes a landmark on the skyline of Lyon and is part of the program of renewal of the district of Confluence.

Mikado è un progetto che si adagia sull’attuale sito della prigione di Saint-Paul, non lontano dalla stazione di Perrache a Li-one. L’idea generatrice del progetto è la molte-plicità di usi e programmi : l’edificio ospita infatti 15.000m2 di parcheggio, 3.000m2 di attività commerciali, 5.000m2 di attività terzi-arie, 10.000m2 di università, 5.000m2 di attiv-ità sportive e 2.000m2 di spazio espositivo. Il disegno della facciata preannuncia la varietà degli spazi presenti all’interno, de-finendo per ogni piano un sistema di travi in acciaio che formano una trama orizzon-tale sempre diversa. Questa trama traspone all’interno dell’edificio l’ambiente esterno e definisce dei vuoti ad ogni piano che per-mettono l’inserzione di pozzi di luce. Il progetto, con i suoi 25m di altezza, di-venta un punto di riferimento nello skyline lionese e si inserisce all’interno del program-ma di rinnovo del quartiere di Confluence.

Natural / Hybrid urbanism for West LA is a urban design parametric project located in Los Angeles, at the intersection of the Santa Monica and the San Diego Freeways. This is a proposal for a new urban strat-egy ready to welcome the new metro line (Expo Line) that will stop in the center of the site. We aimed to create a pedestrian dis-trict: each building on the site is less than 10 minutes away from the metro by walking. The project proposes a new network of streets populated with public functions (shops, offices, schools...) and where con-tamination between public and private al-lows continuous flows, unlike the current situation that shows a clear separation be-tween commerce and residential. This project is based on the idea of trans-forming the existing by creating new build-ings as well as a new urban network and new typologies of public space through a process of hybridation between the site in Los Angeles and the Parisian district of the Marais.

Natural/Hybrid urbanism for West LA è un progetto di design urbano parametrico situ-ato a Los Angeles, all’incrocio tra la Santa Monica FW e la San Diego FW. L'intervento prevede una nuova strategia urbana pronta ad accogliere la nuova linea della metro (Expo Line) che prevede una fermata proprio al centro del sito. Abbiamo voluto creare dunque un quartiere pedonale: ogni edificio presente nel sito è a meno di 10 minuti dalla metro. Il progetto propone un nuovo network di strade dove sono presenti funzioni pub-bliche (negozi, uffici, scuole…) e dove la contaminazione tra pubblico e privato per-metta la continuità dei flussi, contrariamente alla situazione attuale che prevede una netta separazione tra commerci e abitazioni.

Secret Garden is a project conceived in three weeks as part of the atelier of the ar-chitect Peter Cook. It is a temporary installa-tion that adapts to different sizes of Parisian courtyard. A complex steel structure lifts a system of small wooden containers with small gar-dens where the inhabitants of the building can grow different kinds of vegetables. These "vases" move on the vertical axe: they lay on the ground when is time for working the land and can be lifted up in order to clear the passage through the courtyard. A light-ing and irrigation system is positioned along the tubes of the steel structure; gray water and rainwater are collected from the build-ing and filtered into the ground, below the two basins, in order to be re-used in the cul-tivation of plants. The aim of this project is to propose a system of shared gardens where neigh-bours can meet, spend some time in the common area and cultivate their own veg-etables through a sustainable and ecologic system.

Secret Garden è un progetto concepi-to in 3 settimane nell’ambito dell’atelier dell’architetto Peter Cook. Si tratta di un’installazione temporanea che si adatta a diverse taglie di cortile parigino. Sulla struttura in acciaio sono sospesi dei recipienti in legno che contengono pic-coli orti dove gli abitanti del condominio pos-sono coltivare diversi tipi di verdure. Questi « vasi » si spostano su assi verticali : pog-giano al suolo al momento della lavorazione della terra e possono essere sollevati al fine di liberare il passaggio all’interno del cortile. Un sistema di illuminazione e di irrigazione è posizionato lungo i tubi della struttura in ac-ciaio ; le acque grigie e pluviali raccolte dal condominio sono filtrate nel sottosuolo, al di sotto dei due bacini, per poi essere riutiliz-zate nella coltivazione delle piante. Lo scopo di questo progetto è quello di proporre un sistema di orti condivisi dove i vicini possano incontrarsi, condividere del tempo in uno spazio comune e coltivare le proprie versure attraverso una soluzione ecosostenibile e nel rispetto dell’ambiente.

Good Mourning Island is located on the Ile Seguin, South-West of Paris. The theme of the studio was to propose a tower with a program of our choice and with a focus on sustainability, recycling of waste and the environment in general. The main idea of the project is to recycle human bodies, making them an essential source of energy for the life of the build-ing. The tower could be a new type of ur-ban cemetery that substitutes the horizontal burial field, more environment friendly and less extended in the city. The program includes a landscape pro-ject on the whole island (that is also a spir-itual path to the grave for both the deceased and the living) and a tower that rises to al-most 350m high and becomes a landmark in the skyline of Paris. masterplan

Good Mourning Island è un progetto situato sull’Ile Seguin, a sud-ovest di Parigi. Il tema dell’atelier era quello di proporre una torre con programma a scelta e con un’attenzione particolare alla sostenibilità, al riciclo dei rifiuti e al rispetto dell’ambiente in generale. L’idea chiave del progetto è quella di riciclare i corpi umani rendendoli una fonte di energia indispensabile alla vita dell’edificio. Si tratta dunque di proporre una nuova tipo-logia di cimitero urbano che si sostituisce a quella del campo di sepoltura orizzontale, più ecologica e meno invadente all’interno della città. Il programma prevede un progetto paes-aggistico sull’isola e una torre che si innalza a quasi 350m di altezza e diventando quindi un landmark nello skyline parigino.

Urban cemetery, new typology or extincting space?

Between Lane and Death - tale of a promenade on the limit

This project, part of the Master's the-sis presented at the Ecole Speciale d'Architecture in Paris, investigates about the role and place of death and the dead in contemporary society and in our daily lives. The site is the Pere Lachaise cemetery in Paris. The wall of the necropolis is the start of a reflection about limit and discontinuity in urban fabric, sound barrier between the noise of the city and the silence of a holy place, interface between two public spaces (the sidewalk and the city on the one hand, the cemetery and the park on the other). The cemetery wall is also a symbolic element. Separation between the verticality of the living body and the horizontality of the deceased; but also between the horizontal-ity of urban expansion and its movements and the verticality of the cemetery as a spir-itual bond between heaven and earth. Based on this perception of the limit, the barrier was treated in a non-homogeneus way. The wall becomes image of a back-bone along which are anchored different vertebrae, the projects, all different in their size and function, separate and independ-ent. Each project is a unit that works inde-pendently but is part of an ensemble. The wall is a transitional space where takes place the continuity between the space of the dead and the space of the living. Following different paths, the body moves through architecture creating a nar-ration.

Questo progetto, parte della tesi di Laurea Specialistica presentata all’Ecole Spéciale d’Architecture di Parigi, si interroga sul ruolo e il posto della morte e dei morti nella soci-età contemporanea e nel nostro quotidiano. Il sito è quello del cimitero del Père Lachaise, a Parigi. Il muro della necropoli si trova al centro della riflessione in quanto limite e disconti-nuità nel tessuto urbano, barriera sonora tra la frenesia della città e il silenzio del luogo sacro, cerniera e interfaccia tra due spazi pubblici (il marciapiede e la città da un lato, il cimitero e il parco dall’altra). Il muro del cimitero è anche un elemento simbolico. Separazione tra la verticalità del corpo in vita e l’orizzontalità del defunto ; tra l’orizzontalità dell’espansione urbana e dei suoi spostamenti e la verticalità del cimitero in quanto legame spirituale tra cielo e terra. Partendo da questa percezione del lim-ite, la barriera è stata trattata in modo non omogeneo. Il muro diventa immagine di una colonna vertebrale lungo la quale vengono ad ancorarsi le diverse vertebre, i progetti, tutte diverse tra loro, nelle loro dimensioni e funzioni, separate e indipendenti. Ogni progetto è un’unità, funziona in maniera au-tonoma ma fa parte di un insieme. Il muro diventa quindi uno spazio di transizione dove avviene la continuità tra lo spazio dei morti e lo spazio dei vivi. Seg-uendo percorsi diversi, il corpo si muove at-traverso l’architettura prendendo la forma di una narrazione.

Sun-Sath is a light installation for the Place Sathonay in Lyon, presented as part of the Festival of Lights in 2010. The square, busy night and day, remains in the instant of the transition between its day and night life: the sunset. Thanks to a sky of trees and the perspec-tive created by a set of illuminated clouds, the Place Sathonay proposes a new horizon colored and infinite.

Sun-Sath è un’installazione luminosa per la Place Sathonay à Lione, presentata nell’ambito della Festa delle Luci del 2010. La piazza, frequentata tanto di giorno quanto di notte, rimane immersa nell’istante di transizione tra la sua vita diurna e notturna: il tramonto.

Grazie ad un cielo di alberi e alla pros-pettiva creata da un insieme di nuvole illumi-nate, la Place Sathonay propone un nuovo orizzonte colorato e infinito.

The scenography project comes from the need for a stage that could create a link between the public (which is confronted to a story already begun and is aware of the antecedent events only through dialogues and the voice of the radio) and actors; be-tween comprehension and representation. For this reason, once identified the key ele-ments, the ideas that embody the themes of the narrative, they were given a form, a sort of physical presence on stage. Essential elements are the chandelier, which comes down gradually during the whole representation to symbolize the slow arrival of death; the fake scale, illusion of an impossible exit; the radio, real narrator of the story that "takes place" between the protagonists.

La scenografia proposta nasce dall’esigenza di uno spazio scenico in grado di costituire un legame tra il pubblico (che si trova di fronte ad una storia già iniziata e che viene a conoscenza degli eventi ante-cedenti attraverso i dialoghi e la voce della radio) e gli attori; tra la comprensione e la rappresentazione. Per questo motivo, una volta identificati gli elementi chiave, le idee che incarnano i temi della narrazione, gli è stata data una forma, una sorta di presenza fisica in scena. Elementi essenziali sono il lampadario, che scende poco a poco durante tutta la rappresentazione per simbolizzare il lento arrivo della morte ; la finta scala, illusione di un’impossibile uscita; la radio, narratrice del-la storia che “prende posto” tra i protagonisti.

Eno3 is small pavilion designed to ex-hibit and enhance the products of a wine producer. The installation has an area varying be-tween 38 and 65m2, divided into three vol-umes, with different functions each: an ex-hibition zone, a tasting area and an area dedicated to the promotion and sale of wines. These volumes have a strong bond with each other and at the same time are struc-turally independent. The structure consists in a modular met-al elements forming cubes 1,5x1,5x1,5m. The project is therefore characterized by its flexibility of the spaces and the ease of assembly-disassembly operations.

Eno3 è un padiglione espositivo con-cepito per accogliere e valorizzare i prodotti di una casa di produzione vinicola. L’installazione ha una superficie variabile tra i 38 e i 65 m2, divisa in 3 volumi, ognuno con funzioni diverse : un percorso esposi-tivo, una zona di degustazione e una zona dedicata alla promozione e vendita dei vini. Questi volumi hanno un forte legame tra loro e allo stesso tempo sono strutturalmente in-dipendenti. La struttura è composta di elementi modulari metallici che formano dei cubi di 1,5x1,5x1,5m. Il progetto è dunque caratterizzato dalla flessibilità degli spazi e dalla facilità delle op-erazioni di montaggio-smontaggio.

The internship at UrbaLab (Lyon), Urban and Landscape Design studio, gave me the opportunity to work in a team of architects, urban planners, landscape designers and engineers on subjects and issues very di-versified. During this time, I was involved in several projects in both the design phase and construction accomplishing informatic tasks (including CAD documents, 3D im-ages, diagrams...) and manual (study and competition models). The projects I've worked on are divided into three categories: - Landscape Design - Urban Design - Urban Research.

Atelier Elisabeth et Christian de Portzamparc (AECDP)

In February 2012, I started an internship of six months at the Atelier Christian de Port-zamparc in Paris, during which I worked on the project for the future of theater of Casa-blanca: Cas'Art. Unlike the previous stage, in this office I have had the opportunity to work on a major international project, being part of a team sometimes very large, in most of the phases of conception and development of the project. Given the monumentality of the project, I was mainly encharged of the concert and theater halls (1800 seats and 600 seats) also working with structural engineers, acoustic designers, scenographers, etc ... The project is currently under construc-tion and its completion is scheduled for 2017.

A partire da febbraio 2012, ho iniziato uno stage di 6 mesi presso l’Atelier Chris-tian de Portzamparc a Parigi, durante i quali ho lavorato sul progetto per il futuro teatro di Casablanca Cas’Art. A differenza dello stage precedente, in questo studio ho avuto la possibilità di la-vorare su un solo grande progetto interna-zionale, accompagnando un’equipe a volte molto numerosa, su più fasi di concezione ed elaborazione del progetto. Data la monumentalità dell’opera, mi sono occupata principalmente delle ques-tioni riguardanti le due sale (sala di spetta-colo da 1.800 posti e sala di teatro da 600 posti) collaborando anche con ingegneri strutturali e acustici, scenografi, ecc… Il progetto è attualmente in costruzione e la fine dei lavori è prevista in 2017.

MRP is an office for Landscape and Ur-ban Design founded by Marco Rossi, one of the members of UrbaLab. During this collaboration I made graph-ics for competitions (like masterplans and landscape drawings), technical details for site construction, written documents and computer images.

MRP è uno studio di paesaggio e ur-banistica fondato da Marco Rossi, uno degli associati di UrbaLab. Nel corso di questa collaborazione ho realizzato elementi grafici per concorsi (ad esempio masterplan e sezioni paesaggis-tiche), dettagli tecnici per esecuzioni in can-tiere, documenti scritti e immagini di sintesi.

Ateliers Jean Nouvel (AJN)

The internship at the Ateliers Jean Nou-vel took place in the first part of my final year of study (2013-2014). During these period of time I have been working on three different kind of projects. The first one was a compe-tition for the Lusail Marina, near Doha in Qa-tar. Two sites have been proposed, with pro-grams rather diversified: the Front of House, a private marina to protect and expose the yachts of the Emir of Qatar, and the Back of the House, for large boats maintenance. Then I worked on another competition, a luxury hotel in Punta Cana (Dominican Republic), designed in association with the office Mars. The third project was EPO (European Patent Office) in Rijswijk, in the Netherlands. An imposing office tower for 1,700 people and a small building that offers services for employees both lay over a vast basin of water and complete the existing complex, which dates back to the 70s.

Lo stage presso gli Ateliers Jean Nouvel ha avuto luogo nella prima parte del mio ultimo anno di studi (2013-2014). Durante questo periodo di tempo ho lavorato su 3 progetti di tipo diverso. Il primo è stato un concorso per la Marina di Lusail, vicino Doha in Qa-tar. Sono stati proposti 2 siti, con program-mi alquanto diversificati: il Front of House, una marina privata per custodire e mettere in mostra gli yacht dell’Emiro del Qatar, e il Back of House, un centro di riparazione per grandi barche. Ho in seguito lavorato su un altro con-corso, un hotel di lusso a Punta Cana (Re-pubblica Dominicana) concepito in asso-ciazione con lo studio Mars. Il terzo progetto è EPO (European Patent Office) a Rijswijk, in Olanda. Un’imponente torre di uffici per 1700 persone e un piccolo edificio di servizi per gli impiegati si posano su un vasto specchio d’acqua e integrano il complesso esistente, che risale agli anni ’70.
