Das Treffen fand am 19. September 1990 im Schulungszimmer des Bahnhofs Sasel SBB statt.

Es nahmen daran teil:

Tllis is a down-to-earth approach to the design and anslysis of sma/1 experimencs in

an indusulal enviroament. Do not be confused by the word ''Biot:echnology" in the

title. The methods preseated in chis book can be succesfully applied co <Jlmosc any

scient/fic field. Haaland wrote this book main/y for r esearchers, but we think thar:

also people ceaching stacisclcs, engineering or nacural sciences will profit from ic. A

more appropiate ticle wou/d be "Strategie Experimentation wich examples from

Biocechnology".

The presentarion is by example and the methods employed are graphical r ather chan

aumericBI. The author especially emphasises the methodo/ogy for problem solving:

asking good questions, collecting the relevant data, afUllyzing che data co r eveal che

anwers. Another important point is the sequential approach to problem solving.

lmport;mt stat:istical princfples like replication, randomizacfon, blocking and analysis of

residuals are introduced and explained.

Concerning experimental designs the emphasis is on screening designs. ln che appendix

t:here is a "desigll digesc" of 35 screening designs which mit:ht be employed for the

cescing of 3 co 11 factors in 8 co 32 runs. lncluded are full factorials, fractional

faccorials, irregular faccorlals (e.g. john's 3/4-designs), Plackect-Burmun designs, and

mixed leve/ designs (allowing che determination of a quadracic effect). For each

design the resolution and the confoundlng pattern are g iven. The inclusion of many

non-standard designs with little partial confounding which have good statiscical

properties and are very efficient is appreciated. There are a/so 9 designs for response

surface experimencs (cen tral composite, face centered cube and Box-Behnken) which

cover 2 co 5 factors in 11 to 30 runs. Ru/es for the determination of che minimal

number of experiments wbich allow the detection of a given effect size and the

inclusion of center points are discu.ssed.

For che analysis of the experiments the following graphies/ mechods are emp loyed:

cvbe plot, interaction ploc, Pareto plot, active concrast (or Bayes} plot and Normal

ploc. ihe Jacter two are especia/ly helpful for che analysis of satur:JCed expctiments.

Once the important terms have been found and a suicable mode/ fitccd, che model­

evsluation is introduced. This includes a discussion of R2, adjusted R2, t- and p­

values.

Another important point, created in an encire chapter, is che transformation of the

re.sponse variable. Here again grapbical mechods are used. Ressons for using a
