BSc (Honours) in SubstanceMisuse ManagementIntroduction

The University of Kent hasbeen at the forefront ofeducation and training foralcohol and drugpractitioners since 1982,providing short courses, summer schools, workshops and a widerange of award-bearingprogrammes. In 1998, theAddictive BehavioursGroup was establishedwithin the Kent Instituteof Medicine and HealthSciences.

Staff development meant that moreresearch students are nowsupervised, research projectsundertaken and new initiativespursued, adding to establishedCertificate, Diploma and BScprogrammes. All are designed tobe of practical relevance in thestudent’s workplace.

These programmes are unique inbeing able to attract students fromall over the UK and Eire. Teaching

is organised into ‘blocks’, normallyone week of five days long, so thatstudents can stay in Canterbury forthe duration of each module.Students attend a maximum ofthree taught modules each year. The Certificate programmes areoffered in Canterbury on this basisbut also can be delivered locallyacross the UK for any organisationwhere there is a cohort of ten ormore students.

National standards and frameworksfor drug and alcohol services areincorporated into our programmes.Models of Care enables us torespond to the needs ofpractitioners in different “tiers”.Drug and Alcohol NationalOccupational Standards (DANOS)provide a background of task-related competencies thatunderpins much of our teachingcontent. We work closely withorganisations in the non-statutorysector. These include The SalvationArmy, KCA (UK), CRI, Addactionand Turning Point, as well as thePrison Service, Drug Action Teamsand NHS Trusts.

Introduction

As the Addictive Behaviours Groupcontinues to grow we will developthe programmes we offer to meetchanging demand – for instance,we have recently established aspecific Certificate programme forpractitioners within the CriminalJustice System (Certificate in theManagement of SubstanceMisusing Offenders).

We are also extending the range ofresearch projects undertaken andthe number of MPhil/PhD researchstudents being supervised.

We warmly welcome enquiries, todiscuss how the AddictiveBehaviours Group can meet yourneeds, whether you are anewcomer to work in the field ofproblem substance use, or alreadywell into your professional oracademic development.
