brownwood chamber of commerce newsletter - august 2011

As the first day of school fast approaches, families will soon be visiting stores to purchase all of the essentials for back-to- school time. The Brownwood and Early Chambers of Commerce want to remind area residents how important shopping at local retailers can be by launching a shop local campaign for back-to- school. The campaign is designed to raise awareness of the importance in keeping local dollars local and how it affects public services, local business, jobs and community activities. “Each time you make a local purchase, you support local jobs,” said Laura Terhune, Director for the Brownwood Chamber. “During tougher times like these, spending those dollars at home makes an even greater impact on the local economy.” Terhune said sales tax that is generated by local purchases goes to fund important city departments such as fire, police, parks, library, and senior services. Businesses also support and sponsor local events and activities that make Brown County a great place to live. “We realize that not everything is available in Brown County stores, but we want to encourage local shoppers to look here first before making a trip out of town,” said Early Chamber Director Wanda Furgason. “Shoppers will often save time and money by shopping locally instead of taking a long trip.” Residents can expect to see and hear local advertising in the coming weeks through a variety of sources to heighten awareness of the importance of shopping locally. Chamber of Commerce officials also released their top reasons to shop local. Why Buying Local Benefits You 1. More money is put into our local economy 2. Jobs are created & saved 3. Local businesses support community activities 4. Better customer service & convenience 5. Tax dollars fund our local fire, police, & parks departments The 2011 Shop Local campaign is sponsored by Heartland Mall, Wendlee Broadcasting, Mid-Tex Cellular, the Brownwood Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Early Chamber of Commerce. For more information about shopping local or to find a local business, visit BrownwoodChamber.org or EarlyTx.com. www.brownwoodchamber.org Information compiled by the Brownwood Chamber of Commerce Staff or member submitted unless otherwise noted/Design by the Brownwood Bulletin/ over 7,000 copied printed and distributed. Leadership Brownwood Leadership Brownwood began in the mid-80’s by the Brownwood Area Chamber of Commerce as a community leadership development program.

Leadership Brownwood Mission A program of the Brownwood Area Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Brownwood is dedicated to educating, developing, and empowering current and future leaders for the community and motivating them to serve civic, charitable, and business organizations.

Program Details Spanning nine months from September through May, Leadership Brownwood is designed to increase individual and community leadership skills. The beginning retreat, the first Thursday in September, focus-es on individual leadership styles and techniques. Starting in October and ending in May, the class then spends one day a month (typically from 9 AM to 3 PM) examining specific aspects of the community such as education, area government, local business and economic development, health and human services, the criminal justice system, and tourism. The insights participants gain as they explore the inner workings of the community serves as a founda-tion for their long-term involvement in Brownwood in a variety of leadership roles. Dress is business casual but comfortable walking shoes are recommended as most sessions include facility tours. Deadline for application is Friday, August 19, 2011 at 4 PM. Tuition must be received by Sept 1.

Benefits Leadership Brownwood participants benefit from a broad-based education about the community in which they live and work, while developing a valuable communications network among civic, business and educa-tional leaders. They also develop lasting friendships over the course of the year, and personal and profession-al skills that increase their effectiveness within their community and business environment. The City of Brownwood benefits from the development of a source of high quality leaders with broadened perspectives prepared to address issues critical to Brownwood’s future. The success of the program can be measured by the number of Leadership Brownwood graduates who currently serve the community in volunteer and elected positions. Businesses whose employees participate in Leadership Brownwood gain not only a knowledge of the inner workings of the city, but also personal skills that increase their effectiveness in their professional environment.
