Silverdale is located in Kitsap County on the Kitsap Peninsula in Western Washington. Nestled on the west side of the Puget Sound between the Olympic and Cascade Mountain ranges. Silverdale offers visitors and residents alike some of Mother

Nature’s best examples of work. This friendly community wel-comes thousands of visitors each year with all the charm and hospitality to be expected from a waterfront community.

Travelers passing through Silverdale often stay for a couple of days to explore the area. Others make Silverdale their desti-nation for special events, conferences, weddings, school and military reunions, or simply to relax and enjoy the natural sur-roundings. AIRPORTThe Bremerton National Airport is a full-service facility which can accommodate 727, 737, 757 and DC 9 jets. It also pro-vides a base of operations to many of the personal and business aircraft in the county. Bremerton National is only 10 minutes by air from SeaTac Airport and Boeing Field. Major air carriers serve the Seattle/Tacoma International Airport, a 60 minute drive from Silverdale.

FERRIESCar and passenger ferries between Kitsap County and the east side of Puget Sound allow Kitsap residents access to the major metropolitan center of Seattle. Ferry terminals in Kitsap are located at Kingston, Bainbridge Island, Bremerton and Southworth.

TRANSITKitsap Transit is a full service bus line serving all of Kitsap County and each of the four ferry terminals. Kitsap Transit offers countywide Paratransit service as well as special trans-portation programs for employers with 100 or more employ-ees.

SHIP AND RAILThere are no commercial shipping berths in Silverdale. The Port of Bremerton does offer commercial access with fuel

available at the Port Orchard marina. The Port of Silverdale offers a park and transient moorage. Burlington Northern has one active line in Central Kitsap which serves military and industrial cargos.

POPuLATIONThe population of Kitsap County was approximately 254,183 as of 2014. Almost 20,000 people live in the area typically defined as Silverdale (an unincorporated area of the county). Although rural in general appearance because of the incredi-ble scenery, Kitsap County is rated third highest in population density of 39 counties in the State. The county also enjoys the seventh highest median income of the 39 Washington coun-ties.

GEOGRAPHYKitsap County boasts 283 miles of spectacular salt water front, in the form of bays and inlets, around the Hood Canal, Dyes Inlet, Puget Sound and the Strait of Juan de Fuca. It comprises a total landmass of 393 square miles. Silverdale sits almost in the geographic center of Kitsap County. The central core encompasses an area of roughly 6 square miles.

CLIMATESilverdale enjoys a relatively moderate climate due to its proximity to Puget Sound. The Olympic Mountain Range provides a buffer from the stronger weather systems coming

from the Pacific Ocean. Like most of western Washington, Silverdale has four distinct seasons. Temperatures are mild throughout the year with high tempera-tures averaging in the 70’s during the summer and 40’s in the winter. Winters are mild and often go by without a major freeze or snow fall.

EDuCATIONThe Central Kitsap School District covers a 110 square-mile area in and around Silverdale, Washington. The district has two high schools serving grades 9 through 12, one secondary school serving grades 7 through 12,

three junior high schools serving grades 7 and 8, three satellite programs, twelve elementary schools, and a home-school support program. In addition, we offer learning opportunities in a non-tradition-al setting for both junior high and high school students through our alternative programs. Silverdale also offers a vari-ety of independent, private and religious affiliated educational opportunities. Silverdale’s unique location in proximity to Seattle and Tacoma affords students seeking four year and post graduate degrees the opportunity to select from a large number of institutions of higher learning. Kitsap County is served by Olympic College in Bremerton. With

an annual student attendance of over 13,000, Olympic College offers a 4-year nursing degree program, 2-year degrees as well as technical and professional certifications. Olympic College also has a partner program with several national universities, offering curriculum and degree programs from its campus. GOVERNMENTAs an unincorporated community in Kit-sap County, the residents of Silverdale and the surrounding central area are represented via a County Commissioner at the County Seat in Port Orchard. The Board of County Commissioners is the county’s legislative body and serves as the chief administrator for several important county operations. Kitsap County has three commissioners.

HEALTH CARESilverdale boasts many health care professionals and organizations. Prac-titioners of all disciplines and traditions offer their services. There are west-ern-traditional physicians, holistic heal-ers, pharmacists and herbologists, short and long-term residential care. People can seek and find treatments available for body, mind, spirit, and psyche. There are major hospitals, community clinics and of course, private office care. We are proud of the many fine health care professionals who have chosen Silver-dale as their base of practice. Harri-son Medical Center is a not-for-profit, acute-care community hospital. It is one of the region’s busiest medical centers, with three campuses serving Kitsap, Jefferson, and North Mason counties. Harrison Medical Center offers a com-prehensive range of services including award winning cardiovascular services, a radiation oncology center, and a state-of-the-art Emergency Room with a Level III Trauma Center. The centerpiece of Harrison Medical Center’s Silverdale campus is an Outpatient Surgery Center and a Women’s and Children’s Center. Naval Hospital Bremerton provides care to over 60,000 military, family members and retirees who live within the hospi-


tal’s beneficiary base. The hospital runs three major branch medical clinics and two satellite clinics located on military bases in the West Sound. The Veter-ans Administration Puget Sound Care System consists of two medical facilities located in Tacoma and Seattle as well as community-based outpatient clinics located in Bremerton and other loca-tions outside Kitsap. The Washington State Department of Health at www.doh.wa.gov provides helpful information regarding a variety of health-related concerns including provider credential status.

THE MILITARYSome 50,000 active duty, family mem-bers and retired military call Kitsap home. Naval Base Kitsap (NBK) was established in June 2004 through the merger of Naval Station Bremerton and Submarine Base Bangor. NBK is the host command to over sixty commands at Bremerton, Bangor and Keyport. Tenant commands and support units provide 30,000 jobs in the area for mili-tary and civilian personnel. Navy Region Northwest, headquartered in Kitsap, co-ordinates support for forces throughout Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Alaska. Naval Base Kitsap – Bangor is located five minutes north of Silverdale.

SHOPPINGIf you can’t find what you need in Silver-dale you probably aren’t going to find it. The commercial hub of the county offers an incredible variety of retail opportu-nities. Kitsap Mall, anchored by Sears, J.C.Penney, Macys, Barnes and Noble, and Kohl’s serves residents from three surrounding counties. There are over 600 businesses in the Silverdale area, including over 200 retail locations. In ad-dition to Kitsap Mall there are a number of smaller malls in the central core as well as major retailers such as Costco, Old Navy, REI, Trader Joes, Home Depot and Lowe’s. Old Town Silverdale, at the head of Dyes Inlet, offers a delightful, pedestrian friendly destination with shops, salons, bistros and more. The Silverdale Waterfront Park is located at the foot of Byron Street in Old Town. In the Fall of 2015 The Trails at Silverdale plan to open their doors. With an open-air shopping center, they plan to have a

movie theater, restaurants, grocery store and retail outlets.

CuLTuRAL ACTIVITIESDon’t let that “home town” feeling fool you. Kitsap County offers a wealth of opportunities in the visual and perform-ing arts. Community Theater abounds in almost every Kitsap community with plays in production running the gamut of genres. Local organizations dedicated to preserving and teaching the unique cultural heritage of the area offer mu-seums to stroll. Galleries and Art Walks are prolific in the county, with shows and exhibitions featured in the Arts section

of the local papers every week. You’ll find offerings in opera, dance, sympho-ny and more.

FESTIVALS, EVENTS AND ACTIVITIESIn June 2014 the Kitsap Peninsula Water Trails was designated a national water Trail by the National Park Service. This prestigious designation is only one of a handful in the US. Our 371 mile trail encompasses all of the Kitsap Peninsula and is one of the most spectacular pad-dling destination in the world. Every year during the last full weekend in July, Silverdale hosts “Whaling Days”. This weekend event includes a parade, entertainment, arts and crafts as well as the “Great Kit-sap Duck Race”. The Kitsap Fair and Stampede Rodeo takes place over 5 days in late August. 4-H an-imal exhibitions, a carnival midway, arts and crafts displays, big name entertain-ment and more await visitors each year.

The Stampede Rodeo has recently been in top contention for the Best Small Ro-deo at National Final Rodeos. The Thun-derbird Pro Rodeo comes to Thunder-bird Arena in late June. It is the largest Northwest Professional Rodeo Associa-tion (NPRA) event in Washington State and was voted the Best Rodeo in the NPRA in 2007. The event raises funds for Corey’s Day on the Farm (a farm experience for children) and the North-west Burn Foundation. Summer just isn’t complete without the fun of baseball. Kitsap Bluejackets Baseball brings the West Coast Collegiate Baseball to the Kitsap Fair and Events Center June through August. Christmas is started in

Silverdale with the annual lighting of the Community Christmas Tree. This charm-ing event is normally held the Saturday evening after Thanksgiving and includes the arrival of Santa by fire truck.

LEISuRE ACTIVITIESRecreational activities abound in Silver-dale and the surrounding area. No matter what your interests are you will find a resource for them in Kitsap or nearby. Golfers will find no less than 12 cours-es within close distance of Silverdale, including the championship courses at Gold Mountain, McCormick Woods and Alderbrook. Winter sports activities from snowshoeing to sledding snowboarding are all within a short drive. Opportunities for soccer, Little League and PeeWee Sports enthusiasts are available throughout the community. Silverdale and Kitsap are family friendly in environment and opportunities for recreation are limitless! Clear Creek Trail starts at Dyes Inlet near the Best Western Plus: Silverdale Beach Hotel. The wood-ed trail winds along Clear Creek past an interpretive center and through Silver-dale. It traverses through wetlands where you’ll find yourself on a well constructed boardwalks.
