Brownwood Country Club

The long anticipated CampBowie Family Aquatic Center isalmost ready for use and shouldbe open sometime in July. A lit-tle over 20 months ago, citizensof Brownwood voted andapproved a referendum to use $6million in funding through theBrownwood EconomicDevelopment Corporation tobring a new sports complex,swimming pool, and provide anew home for the Senior CitizensCenter. $2 million of the origi-nal referendum went to fund theaquatic center project while agrant from the Texas Parks andWildlife Department of $500,000was split between this projectand the new sports complex.The construction of the pool isbeing overseen by Sunbelt Poolwhile the bath house is being

constructed by FainConstruction.

This facility will feature manygreat attractions that will appealto a wide range of users. A waterslide and tower will be the cen-terpiece of the aquatic centerwith a 4-lane lap area & divingwell on one side and a currentchannel on the other. Othergreat features of the facilityinclude a smaller tot slide, zeroentry wading area, leisure pool,interactive water geysers, andmuch more. An array of vibrantand fun colors has been selectedfor the center and equipment.

City of Brownwood Parks &Recreation Director DavidWithers said that they plan onkeeping the admission price thesame as the old pool. The capac-ity of the new pool will be

approximately 400 people. The current plan is to close

the old Camp Bowie pool oncethe new center is open and even-tually do away with the old facil-ity all together. The WigginsPool on Victoria Street willremain open.

Fees for the new aquatic cen-ter will be close to the sameprices as those of the old pool.General admission will be $2 for12 & under; $3 for 13 & over.Season passes for 12 swims willbe $20 for 12 & under and $30for 13 & over. Rental of thepavilion will be $35 for 2 hrs,which includes 3 tables and freeadmission for 1 chaperon.Rental of pool after hours will be$250 (6:30-8:30 with a $100deposit and $125/each extra hourwith 8 lifeguards required).

The Chamber’s Monthly Luncheonwill be Friday, June 18 at theBrownwood Country Club from 11:30AM to 1 PM. The luncheon, which isopen to members and guests, will fea-ture an interesting program and will alsoinclude door prizes, introduction of newmembers and a cash drawing.

The featured speaker will be CarterSmith, Executive Director of the TexasParks and Wildlife Department(TPWD). A native of Austin, Smithdeveloped his passion for wildlife andthe out of doors at a young age whileroaming his family’s farm and ranchland interests in Gonzales, Williamson,and Edwards Counties. He has a

wildlife managementdegree from Texas Techand a master’s degree inconservation biology fromYale University. He beganhis professional career in1992 as a managementintern at TPWD, assistingin the Private Lands andPublic Hunting programs.As a biologist, he hasworked on a variety ofresearch projects rangingfrom studying moose inthe boreal forests ofSaskatchewan to pronghorn antelope infar west Texas.

He serves on a numberof conservation-relatedboards of directors andadvisory councils and wasrecently named an out-standing alumnus by TexasTech and the College ofAgriculture and NaturalResources.

Prior to his selection asTPWD executive director,Smith was with The NatureConservancy of Texas,serving as state director,where he led a team that

protected nearly 250,000 acres while hewas director.

At Texas Parks and WildlifeDepartment, he is responsible for over-seeing an agency of 3,100 professionalsin 11 different divisions, includingWildlife, Law Enforcement, State Parks,Coastal Fisheries, and Inland Fisheries.

Carter and his wife, Stacy, reside inAustin.

The May/June issue of Texas Risingfeatures Brownwood’s manufacturingbased industries as an example of howsome areas of the Texas economyremain strong.

This newsletter style publication isproduced bi-monthly by theComptroller’s office and is one waythat the office communicates with tax-payers. The publication is availableonline and in print form.

The article states in part: Away from the bright glow of metro

lights, Brownwood’s manufacturerskeep rolling out products for salearound the world. Despite a weakenedeconomy, there’s no slowing down inthis northern Hill Country communityof 20,000 situated about 130 milessouthwest of Fort Worth.

HEARTLAND ROD RUN A BIG SUCCESSOver 300 vehicles were on display in the annual

Heartland Rod Run at Riverside Park on SaturdayJune 5th bringing out a large crowd of car enthusi-asts and people just looking for some fun.

The event, hosted by local car club theHeartland Cruisers, featured a line-up of funevents to go along with the show including a pantydash, a burnout contest, a car cruise, and severalother kid and adult games. The burnout contestdrew an especially large crowd attracted to theloud engines and burnout smoke.

The Heartland Cruisers gave out numerousawards for the most popular cars, trucks, and trac-tors along with the best cars in the show by cate-gory. This year’s overall Best of Show trophywent to Ronnie Anderson of Albany for this 1957Chevy Nomad.

The event brought in many participants andspectators from around the state giving a greatweekend boost to the local economy.

Special thanks go to the Heartland Cruisers andtheir sponsors for coordinating and hosting such agreat event.

Summer has just begun, but theChamber is looking forward to fall!The date has been set for the 16thAnnual Business Showcase and thisOctober will mark the return of theChamber Cook-Off.

In September, the BrownwoodChamber will host the 16th AnnualBusiness Showcase at theBrownwood Coliseum. The theme ofthe show is “Your Road to Success”and will open at 10:00 AM onThursday, September 9th. Thisexhibitor style show offers visitors the

opportunity to network with over 70local businesses. There will bechances throughout the day to wingrand door prizes, booth prizes andsample tasty recipes from localrestaurants at “The Taste ofBrownwood” until 6:00 PM thatevening. Vendors should registersoon to ensure a prime location at thissell out show! Early registration endsAugust 25th, but spaces are filling upfast!

But, don’t stop there….go aheadand reserve your spot for the return of

the Brownwood Chamber ofCommerce Member Cook-Off! Fireup your grill or cooker, dig out thosesecret BBQ, side dish and dessertrecipes and get ready for some food,fun and fellowship! On Tuesday,October 5th the Brownwood Chamberwill host Chamber Members in theDepot Plaza for an all day Cook-Off.Participants may enter in one or allfive categories that include brisket,other meat, side dish, beans anddesserts to be judged at the end of theday. Winners in each category will beawarded plaque and the overall win-ner will not only take home braggingrights but infamous traveling trophyto display at their business!

This event is a fun, relaxed net-working opportunity for Chambermembers. Participants are encour-aged to come up with fun themes fortheir spaces and will be judged andawarded for creativity. At the end ofthe day, the cook-off will be open tothe public with live entertainment foradults and children alike!
