NEWBURGH SITE UPDATE There have been a number of rumours in the village about the site, so here is the latest situation report. Firstly, the land is no longer owned by New- burgh. It was sold to the developer, Cam- stead Homes, and the delay in site op- erations recently was because certain formal procedures had to be completed. You will have seen that equipment has re- turned to the site and preparations are being made to lay out the road network and start installation of services. The first houses are still expected towards the end of the year and the Bradwell Community Land Trust, which will own the affordable houses being built, are making arrangements to ensure every- thing is ready by the time the first houses come available. We will post regular updates as site development continues. Any- one with questions should contact Bradwell News. STANLEY FROST BRADWELL Stanley died in hospital on 23rd January 2019, aged 92. He was the oldest “Bradwell-born” man in the village. He was born in 1926, the youngest of the four children of Louisa and Thomas Bradwell, who owned a butcher’s and grocer’s shop in Towngate. On leaving Bradwell Church School at the age of 14, he trained as a maintenance fitter at Earle’s Cement, where he worked for 44 years until his retirement. Stanley married Mary Evans at

the Methodist Chapel in 1949 and shortly afterwards they went to live at Pingle Nook, Jeffrey Lane, where Tim was born in 1952. They moved to Ashover House in 1989. Stanley was a lifelong Methodist and a Sunday School teacher. Not only did he play a key role in Bradwell Methodist Church, where his duties included stewardship of the property and the graveyard, but he was also heavily involved in the activities of the Methodist Peak Circuit. He devoted much time and energy to fund raising for the Methodist Church. In 1972, he was one of a small group to start collecting and re-cycling waste paper from around the Hope Valley. The final paper collection was made in October 2018, when ill health forced him to retire. As a “Thank You” to his many helpers, Stanley arranged an annual Meat and Potato Pie lunch. Chopping and selling sticks was another of his fund-raising activities. In 1952, he proposed that Bradwell Methodist Church should hold an Easter Breakfast, a tradition that has been running successfully ever since. As part of the Methodist Men’s Effort, he played a big part in helping organise numerous Meat and Potato Pie lunches/ suppers. Over his lifetime, Stanley was involved in so many aspects of village life. He had been a Parish Councillor, Chair of the Sam-uel Fox Board of Trustees, a Memorial Hall Committee mem-ber for 50 years, a member of the Historical Society, of the Tuesday Walkers, of the Bamford Singers and he inaugurated the Men’s Methodist Choir. Meeting people and socialising with friends brought him great pleasure and he enjoyed breakfasts at the Yondermann and Sunday lunches at The Bowling Green. Over the years, he and Mary travelled widely by car in the UK and the highlight of his 1993 visit to America was a helicopter trip over the Grand Can-yon. The Committal took place at Hutcliffe Wood Crematorium on 6th February, followed by a Service of Celebration and Thanks-giving at the Methodist Church. Stanley leaves wife Mary, son Timothy, grandchildren Charlotte and Sam and great grandchil-dren Isabella and Darcie.

THE HEIGHTS OF ABRAHAM News from Matlock Bath is that for safety reasons Network Rail has decided to close the railway crossing at Matlock Bath sta-tion due to videos posted on social media of children being allowed by parents to sit on the railway tracks. The problem is that this has blocked the main public access to the nearby Heights of Abraham cable car base station, making it impossi-ble for the public to use this major local attraction. At a meeting on 24th January, Derbyshire Dales District Council agreed to the disposal to the Heights of Abraham of the Council’s free-hold interest in land it owns next to the Station Car Park, on which the attraction will create a new pedestrian access route. The Heights of Abraham will pay the Council £10,000 plus sur-veyor and legal costs for the transfer and in the agreement the Council will retain rights over the roadway for pedestrian ac-cess for the public between the Station Car Park and two pub-lic footpaths to the A6 and Starkholmes. Running alongside the river, the single track roadway where the new access will be created originally provided vehicular access to a now disused colour works site.

HATHERSAGE CHOIR On Saturday 6th April, Hathersage Choir are holding a work-shop in Hathersage Memorial Hall. We are hoping to tackle Haydn’s “Nelson Mass”, one of his best which was written towards the end of his life. In 1798, Haydn's world was in turmoil. Napoleon had crossed the Alps and was threatening Haydn's home country of Austria. He named the Mass, Missa in Angustiis, a mass for troubled times. How appropri-ate for today. We will meet at 0930 for registration and coffee then begin at 1000. There will be a performance towards the end of the afternoon. Music will be provided so it is important to book a place beforehand. Please check the choir website at hathersage-choir.co.uk for more details or phone Sheila Simpson on 01433 650827 or Lesley Bentley 01433 620507

HOPE AMATEUR DRAMATIC “They’ll ’ear rumpus from ’ere to Leeds!” . . . HADIT’s Spring play is J B Priestley’s classic Yorkshire com-edy When We Are Married. Set in 1908, three respectable well-to-do couples – married on the same day in the same chapel by the same parson – gather to celebrate twenty-five years of blissful matrimony. Or so they think. The celebrations are brought to a sudden halt by a shocking revelation. With a photographer from the local paper due to arrive any second, a gossiping charwoman and a door-bell that won’t stop ringing, can the couples keep a lid on their embarrassing secret? Performances will be at Hope Methodist Hall, Edale Road for three nights from Thursday 25th to Saturday 27th April. Tickets will be on sale towards the end of this month. For more details or for phone bookings, contact Carolyn on 620665 / [email protected].

VALERIE HALL Valerie died aged 83 on 30th January after a long period of illness. Born in Buxton on 29th July 1935, she was edu-cated at Fairfield Endowed School and Cavendish Grammar School for Girls. She was a Girl Guide, a Ranger and later a Brown Owl and a member of Buxton Trefoil Guild. On 2nd June 1953, as part of the Girl Guides representa-tion, she was chosen to line the route of the coronation procession. She at-

tended City of Coventry Teacher Training College prior to tak-ing up her first teaching post in 1956 at Whaley Bridge Pri-mary School, where she later became Deputy Head and then Acting Head. She was then appointed Headteacher at Thorn-sett School, from where she retired through ill health in 1993. She met Keith in 1957, when they were both working at Whaley School and they were married on 3rd April 1961 at St. Peter’s, Fairfield. Their first matrimonial home was Granby Cottage, a small wooden bungalow. They then bought a house in Harpur Hill, where they raised their 2 sons, Stuart and Richard. They moved back to Bradwell in 1992, when they had a bungalow built on Granby, on the site of Keith’s birthplace. Valerie was chairperson of Bradwell Historical So-ciety and was made the society’s President for Life. She had great knowledge of local history and old English traditions, was fascinated by family history and contributed items for Der-byshire Family History magazine. She had been a National Trust member since 1958. She had a love of the English lan-guage and poetry, was an avid reader and had a great interest

CARNIVAL 2019 Carnival Day this year is 3rd August, with the theme of “Around The World”. If any village organisation is interested in making the street collection please let the Parish Clerk know. The clerk will also be pulling together details for a Carnival Programme, so if you have an event which you want to be in the programme please let the clerk know before May 31st.

Personal announcements in the arts. Val and Keith held season tickets for the Opera House, regularly attended the Crucible, Lyceum and Pome-granate theatres and had attended the annual Buxton Festi-val since its inception. For many years, they enjoyed touring Europe in their caravan, until camping turned to glamping and old age forced them into hotel holidays. Val loved good food and was an adventurous and magnificent cook. She finally became a grandmother in 2009, with the birth of her grand-son, Rogan. The funeral was at Hutcliffe Wood Crematorium on 18th February 2019.

MAUREEN WATERHOUSE (Nee Boyes) Maureen’s family wish to thank all the many friends from Bradwell and further afield who attended the funeral service at Hutcliffe Wood on January 24th. Thanks also for all the kind messages of support and condolence.

THANK YOU I would like to express my sincere thanks to everyone who sent me good wishes, cards and presents for my 80th birth-day. It was all most unexpected but very much appreciated. David Broome

***************** Mary, Tim and the family would like to say a huge Thank You to all who contributed towards giving Stanley such a marvel-lous send-off and a day for us all to long remember!
