PARISH COUNCIL NEWS Carnival 2019: As previously reported, Carnival this year is on Saturday 3rd August with the theme “Around the World”. We are looking for help in a number of different areas e.g. stall organizing, marquee erection, road closures, judges for different events and general help on the day. Please look out for posters on the notice boards for more details or call Coun-cil chair (623941) or the Parish Clerk. There is still an opportu-nity to apply for your group or organisations to carry out, and benefit from, the street collection during the parade. You would be responsible for organizing your own street collection permit which can be obtained from Derbyshire Dales District Council. If your group is interested in this fundraising opportu-nity, please apply to the Parish Clerk by the end of May. S137 Grant Fund: Council awarded a grant of £1,150 to the War Memorial Hall towards the cost of roof insulation. Playing Fields: The playing fields committee have agreed a program of work on the trees in Beggars Plot Playing Field, Town Bottom Playing Field and the Peace Garden. The work includes the removal of one dead tree and removal of both over hanging and crossing branches on a number of trees. Following the installation of the toddler play equipment in Beg-gars Plot Playing Field the committee are now investigating what adult gym equipment could be installed on one of the playing fields. More on this in the next couple of months. New signs for Council owned property: Signs bearing Council’s new logo are being installed on council owned prop-erty in the village. Toilets: We are please to say there hasn’t been any further instances of damage to the toilets since the last incident. The toilets are an important facility in the village, and we would like to keep them in a good working condition for all. Waste Management Tender: It was reported at the last Par-ish Council meeting that Derbyshire Dales District Council (DDDC) have set the tender terms for the next waste manage-ment tender. District Councillor Furness reported that con-tenders for the tender must give proof that they understand the route so there is no disruption to for residents. Garden waste will be a chargeable, opt-in or out service for residents. Please note that this change will not come into place until 2020 when the current tender ends. Memorial for the late Stanley Bradwell RIP: Council are considering placing a memorial for the late Stanley Bradwell RIP in the Peace Garden. Several options are under consid-eration and a decision will be made in the near future. Car parking: There is one space available to rent at Soft-water Lane Carpark for £25 pcm or £300 annual. If you are interested please contact the parish clerk. Public Participation: Residents continue to attend council meetings to raise matters of concern directly with Council. We welcome members of the public at both main council and all committee meetings. Council meetings are generally held at 7:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of most months in the Method-

REBELLION KNOLL WI The year began for Rebellion Knoll with a very interesting talk by Anna Smallwood about a holiday to Outer Mongolia. Her slides gave us a fascinating insight into a life very different to the one we know here in Bradwell. A last-minute change to the programme in February gave us a thought-provoking talk by Liz Downing on the importance of our mental health. This was followed by a short demonstration of reflexology with our Presi-dent, Linda, in the chair. We all had our hands ‘relaxed’ and even that very quick treatment felt beneficial and calming. March saw us in two teams, challenging each other in a curling competition. Great fun and not quite as easy as it first seems. Just as you think you have mastered the art and have your stone perfectly placed, someone sends it way off course with theirs! Our coffee trail took us to the Courtyard Café in Hope in January with a walk there and back for several of us. In Febru-ary we met at the Anglers Rest in Bamford with some mem-bers making use of the bus. It was decided to have a return visit to Tilly’s Tearoom in Castleton in March and several mem-bers put on their boots and walked there and back. They defi-nitely earned a piece of cake with their drink on this occasion! Refreshments were served again this year by Rebellion Knoll for all five performances of the village pantomime in February. Tea, coffee, milk and squash had been kindly provided by the Co-op. Cup-cakes, made by members and decorated in red and yellow for a Beauty and the Beast theme, were on sale and together with donations for the drinks made a welcome boost for WI funds. The pots, planted up in the autumn by WI members, are now looking beautiful, with pansies and daffodils making a very colourful show. We are having an open meeting on 10th April with a speaker from ‘Moors for the Future’. Any-one can come along (£3 for visitors). The AGM and Resolu-tions meeting is in May and a new programme will start in June. We have welcomed two new members this year. Would anyone else like to join us? Come and meet us at the Method-ist Hall, 7.30 pm on the second Wednesday in the month? We would love to meet you!

BRADWELL BEAVERS Fifteen 1st Bradwell Bea-ver scouts took part in their first camp at Hesley Wood scout campsite. They stayed over in tents and took part in adventur-ous activities including Canoeing, Go Carts, track sledging, and crate stack-ing (a harnessed beaver builds a pile of crates while standing on the top until they fall over!). Five year old Jack, the young-est on camp, said ‘my favourites were the camp-fire, the glow stick wide game and the crate stack-ing, the crates were a bit

scary but I liked it anyway. I liked staying in a tent with my friends’. Beavers restarted in the village in the autumn term, and the group of 21 boys and girls aged 5 3/4 to 8 meets on Fridays, 4.30-5-30. Beavers learn to work as a team, to look after themselves and play lots of games. Lots more exciting activities are planned, including another camp in September. To contact beavers email Roger Cotes at [email protected]

RING OUT THOSE BELLS! Some of you may have heard our St Barnabas bells ring out to celebrate the joyous occasion of the wedding of Jodie and Tim Cottrill on April 5th, our first wedding of the year and the first to benefit from the hard work of John Cockayne and Colin Biggin. Our two dedicated volunteers have been pains-takingly restoring the carillon by repairing and replacing the woodwork and operating mechanism; having fitted a new crankshaft, new bellows and custom-made con rods. In a future edition of Bradwell News we will explain further the uniqueness of our carillon and how it operates, in order to keep the bells ringing out our much loved tunes.

STANISLAW GALASINSKI Stanislaw Galasinski was born on 7th March 1922 in the village of Lyse, Poland. On 1st September 1939, when Germany invaded Poland Stan and his family fled to the coun-tryside returning home only when the Ger-mans had passed through. Later that Sep-tember Russia invaded Poland and in Febru-ary 1940 Stan and his family were deported

by the Soviets in cattle trucks to Forced Labour Camps in Si-beria. After 18 months, Stan managed to escape by lying un-derneath the wagons of a train. After a month of avoiding peo-ple, living out of dustbins and eating raw potatoes to stay alive he arrived at the Caspian Sea. Here he stowed away on a fishing boat by burying himself underneath a cargo of fish in the ship’s hold and got to what was then Persia, now Iran, where he joined the Polish Army. In August 1942, Stan was assigned to the SS Mauretania to guard German Prisoners of War on their way to the USA and by October 1942 he had arrived in Galashiels, Scotland where he joined the Polish Navy under British command. Stan trained as a wireless tele-graphist and, in May 1943 was assigned to Destroyers pro-tecting the convoys of Merchant ships. In late 1943 Stan was in the Mediterranean protecting the Armed Forces. While on duty he realised that his ship was being attacked by German radio-controlled bombs and was able to jam their control fre-quency causing them to miss the ship. It wasn’t until a few years ago that we realised that Stan had been awarded sev-eral Service Medals, including the Polish Cross of Valour for this action, and he was reunited with these service medals, which had never been presented to him before. Stan was de-

Personal announcements mobbed in May 1947 from Brandon Camp, Norfolk from where he went to Sheffield seeking work and was directed to Bradwell where he worked in a small electrical shop, repairing wireless sets and delivering accumulators in the Hope Valley. He met Audrey Rowland in Bradwell and they married on 11th March 1950. In 1953 they moved to Leicester where he had a regular round repairing television sets in people’s homes. During his retirement, Stan enjoyed lawn bowls and making all sorts of items out of old furniture. He also enjoyed his gar-den, spending many hours tending and edging his two lawns, as well as growing several varieties of tomatoes in his green-house. Stan and Audrey were married for almost 69 years and received two personal messages from the Queen on their 60th and 65th Wedding Anniversaries.

************** MARGARET RIDGEWAY

Margaret died peacefully at home on March 15th 2019. Born at Hill Head on April 29th1931, she was the only child of Ber-nard and Corrie Andrew. On leaving Bradwell Council School she went to work at Bamford Mill. She met Ivan, who lived in Eyam, at a dance in Bradwell and they were married at the Bethlehem Chapel in 1952. Following the birth of their son, Alan, in 1956 she left Bamford Mill and began helping her father on his 2000 bird poultry farm. She later worked for Joyce Palmer, a Castleton hairdresser and at Bradwell Infant School, where she had a variety of roles. In 1969, Ivan and Margaret built a bungalow on Granby, where they were to spend the rest of their lives. Margaret loved animals – she had several cats, kept German Shepherds and at one time she owned 20 goats. She and Ivan enjoyed outings and so-cialising with friends. The funeral was on March 28th, at St. Lawrence’s Church, Eyam. She leaves son Alan, daughter-in-law Kit and three grandchildren. Ivan died in 2008.
